Boo!

It’s the month of spooks, scares, festivities and (in my opinion) the kick-off to some of the best food of the year – it’s finally fall; hello October! I don’t know about you, but some of my favorite foods come with a little kick. I don’t want to not be able to feel my mouth, but give me a dish with a good level of spice and I’m happy. There are a lot of other pepper-bellies (as my grandma likes to call people who love spicy things) out there, and so we thought we’d kick off the fall season with the best of the best spicy dishes from around town. You’ll find everything from sweet heat to kick-you-inthe-tongue heat. If you aren’t afraid to spice it up, we recommend making your way through these festive local dishes that will have you coming back for more (and probably more water).

in your household and others may be new to you. As always we encourage you to shop local when and where you can! Along with the lovely weather it brings, October is packed full of events and things to do and see, and I LOVE it. It essentially kicks off the start of the holiday season. Our calendar of events this month couldn’t hold any more events if we wanted it to. There’s something on there to participate in for everyone, at every age. I highly recommend getting out this month and trying something you’ve never done.

I hope this is a great month for you! Accept each day for the gift it is and trust that some of the best days of If you know So6ix, you should know by now that your life haven’t even happened we’re big proponents of everything local, and one yet. DELLA TERRA RIGATONI WITH SMOKED SAUSAGE, KALE, MUSHROOM, GRAPE TOMATO, & PECAN PESTO PECAN PESTO INGREDIENTS

• 3 cups fresh basil leaves 1 cup Miller Pecan Co. pecans, toasted 5 cloves garlic 1/2 cup grated Lovera’s Caciocavera (or Parmesan)

• 3/4 cup EVOO

(extra virgin olive oil)

1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/2 tsp fresh cracked black pepper • 1 tsp lemon juice, freshly squeezed

PASTA DISH

• 2 tbsp grapeseed oil

(or any oil with a high smoke point)

• 1.5 cups Della Terra Pasta • 1 white onion, medium diced • 1 bunch kale • 16 oz cremini mushrooms, stemmed & quartered • 1 pint grape tomatoes • 3 links Mountain View Meat Company, sliced • 1/3 cup chicken stock • Salt & pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Blend the basil, pecans, garlic, cheese, lemon juice, salt and pepper together in a food processor. While blending, slowly add EVOO until the mixture becomes somewhat thick and well incorporated. 2. In a medium skillet or cast iron pan, heat oil and sauté onion until translucent. Add sausage and kale. Cook until kale begins to soften and sausage begins to brown. Add mushrooms and tomatoes.

Continue to cook until tomatoes begin to burst, approximately 5-7 minutes. Deglaze pan with chicken stock. Cook until the stock is reduced by half. 3. Add the cooked pasta and gently mix. Once warmed through, add pesto (personal preference, I recommend 1/2 cup) and salt and pepper to taste. Spoon into serving dish and grate more cheese on top if desired.

ENJOY!

Q: “Do I have to do field sobriety tests and/or take a breath/blood test if I’m pulled over by police and suspected of a DUI?” A: Absolutely not. You are not required to submit to any testing whatsoever regardless of how intimidating the officer acts. You don’t have to answer questions or submit to any tests, and in fact, you should not.

Q: “Won’t I automatically lose my license if I refuse the breath/blood test?” A: No. Nothing is “automatic.” You have the absolute right to due process, or “the right to be heard,” before the government can take action against you. I can request a hearing on your behalf to save your driving privilege.

Q: “What is the legal BAC limit for a DUI in Oklahoma?” A: In Oklahoma, you can be convicted of a DUI if the state can prove that you had a 0.08% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) or higher. However, there are several rules and regulations in relation to the gathering of breath or blood evidence, and if it’s done incorrectly, I can often suppress those results and keep them out of evidence.

A true German-inspired beer and food hall right in our backyard. Fassler Hall is the mecca of beers and German eats galore. This spot, located in booming Midtown, is perfect for large crowds with its spacious indoor and

outdoor setup. With multiple opening garage doors, the space converts to one giant eatery playground with some of the best views of the downtown skyline. You’ll find all the German favorites like bratwurst, pretzels as big as your head, schnitzels and endless amounts of beer. One of the many things we love about Fassler is they make all the food in house. All of Fassler’s sausages are made with locally farmed pork from Prairie Creek Farms. They’re whipping out authentic bratwurst and sausages daily in all different flavors, like cheddar, habanero, jalapeño cheddar, hot Italian and so many more. We highly recommend you try them all. And they don’t stop there: all the way down to the hand-pounded schnitzel, the hand-cut duck-fat fries, the chili and smoked Gouda cheese sauce (that you’re going to want to drink with a straw), it’s all made in house. You can taste the love and dedication to authenticity in each and every bite. If you want to see one of the largest selections of international beers in the city, Fassler Hall is the spot.

421 N.W. 10th St. OKC 73103 405.609.3300 fasslerhall.com

They have every German and European beer known to man (okay maybe not, but close) and plenty of others mixed in, like local brews, regional favorites, craft beers, ciders, and gluten-free options. There’s a sip for every palate and every desire. Some come for the food and some come for the beer, but we recommend you do it all. So many of the beers from their mile-long list pair so well with their handmade dishes. You might just discover

SUPPORTS

GIVING FOR GOOD

SHARING TREE Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

For almost 40 YEARS, Sharing Tree has been helping families in central Oklahoma.

4,000 FAMILIES were served last year.

They have Sharing Tree serves 4 PROGRAMS: Christmas over 500 FAMILIES annually through Connection, Crisis its Christmas Connection, Classroom Connection program. Connection and Community Connection.

Sharing Tree is a metro-area nonprofit that is serving families in need by providing a no-cost, dignified shopping experience. They currently have four different programs that offer this assistance. Christmas Connection is a Christmas shopping experience that aims to make sure no family is deprived of Christmas morning memories. They offer new toys as well as clothing, shoes, coats, books and Christmas decorations. Crisis Connection is for families that experience loss from a fire, tornado or similar disaster. It helps them get back on their feet and start rebuilding their lives. Classroom Connection helps Oklahoma City Public School families with school uniforms. The district requires uniforms, yet approximately 90% of the district’s students are at or below poverty level. Sharing Tree fills the gap by providing two uniform sets to ensure students are able to remain in the classroom to earn their education. And lastly, Community Connection offers families clothes and other necessities in a department store–like layout at no cost. Sharing Tree truly cares about this community and wants our people to thrive no matter their circumstances, and they’re doing everything they can to make that happen.

HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE

GET INVOLVED

If you’d like to be a part of their mission, they are always in need of monetary donations to help fund operations and enhance their programs. You can also donate items to fully stock their shelves, such as new and gently used clothing, school uniforms, children’s tennis shoes, household items and personal hygiene items.

You can volunteer your time to be a shopper assistant to help shoppers with their selections, to stock shelves, or to collect Christmas gifts at your place of business with one of their collection boxes. You can fill out a form on their website.
