The Investor’s Report provides an opportunity to publicly recognize those who have so generously supported Saint Mary’s in this past year. I am reminded of this biblical verse, “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from You, and we have given You only what comes from Your hand” (1 Chronicles 29:14). This quote brings to mind the concept that “great things are possible,” the Lasallian theme and the focus of the 2020 conference for Lasallian Chief Administrators. That theme steadied us through the challenging pandemic. It was a constant reminder of hope, which continues to center our strategic plan, “Building a Future Full of Hope 2025.” When we consider all things good and great, we can’t help but recognize all the efforts that went into weathering the pandemic — while still providing an uninterrupted quality academic experience. Faculty on all our campuses are to be applauded for their efforts to excel in online education, as most took or are taking additional training to enhance student learning. Our students are to be commended for their pledge to keep one another safe, thereby allowing us to continue learning in person in Winona last year. We laud the resilience and fortitude of our Saint Mary’s community and our philanthropic partners during this challenging economic time. Despite the pandemic, we furthered our goals in the second year of our strategic plan. These included: n Continuing to recruit and train students through our business accelerators — non-degree, career enhancement offerings for students looking to change their careers or advance in their positions. We’ve also introduced digital badging, which highlights new credentials so our students and alumni are more easily recognized and identified by potential employers for their specific skill sets. n Launching our new B.S. in Nursing in Winona this fall. This is the newest addition to our successful, growing, and industry-focused educational healthcare programming. We are grateful to our generous philanthropic partners Jack and Mary Ann (Wera) Remick, for establishing our first chair of nursing. In this position, Sister Agnes Mary Graves, RSM, DNP, hopes to shift the direction of healthcare by educating a new generation of nurses who will care for the whole patient, intellectually, psychologically, physically, mentally, and spiritually. n This nursing program — along with a unique academic blend of science and business — will be housed in our newest renovated facility, Aquinas Hall, formerly known as the Adducci Science Center’s Hoffman and Brother Charles Halls. This fall, we

dedicated this facility and recognized the many people who have contributed to its completion, along with all who have made significant investments in our students. It’s a beautiful state-of-the-art facility, and we hope you all will make a trip to our Winona Campus to see this welcome addition. n Our Character Education and Virtue Formation initiative continues to build momentum. The mission of Saint Mary’s has always included fostering character and virtue in our students. Our current plan focuses these efforts and expands the integration of character and virtue throughout the academic curriculum and campus activities. Saint Mary’s aspires to become known nationally as a leader in character education and virtue formation. We will do so by establishing new partnerships to serve our communities better as we work to develop our students to better serve and lead in their chosen fields. In thanksgiving for all things great and good, we honor and recognize you. Your generosity allows us to do more for our students, who leave here to do more for their communities and our world. You can be assured your investments in our students, and our academic enterprise, will have lasting positive effects far wider than you or we could ever imagine. We pray that God may bless you abundantly so that in all things and at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8). Know of our prayers for you in gratitude and praise to our Lord for this year and for your continued partnership and good work.

“People are hungry, especially the young. They are hungry for God, and you are here to satisfy that hunger. Be faithful to the great gift that God has made you to be teachers, educators, light. His light, in the world among young people. The future of the world depends on what you do.” – Saint Teresa of Calcutta This statue is located on the Winona Campus.

A message from the Board Chair

6

What does a Saint Mary’s degree stand for? Our mission, reputation, and brand call on us to not only answer this question but continually validate our answer and share the outcomes loudly and proudly. Certainly, we want our graduates to leave here with current and applicable skills and knowledge. We also want our graduates to be renowned for another trait, one desperately needed in today’s workforce: character. Every industry benefits from hiring graduates with strong ethical character and virtue. It’s a lot to imbue in our students during the short time our undergraduates and graduate students are with us. Yet, we know it begins with having the right people, tools, facilities, and resources in place. Included in our “right people” focus is Leon Dixon, Saint Mary’s new vice president for inclusion and human dignity. His background and experiences in the world of inclusion support our efforts, including discussions, learning, and community on our campuses and beyond. These discussions, elevated by what’s happening right now in the world around us, have always been key to who we are as Lasallian Catholics. We’ve also welcomed Matthew Gerlach as our vice president for character, virtue, and ethics. His work will weave throughout the university. To have the right tools, we must continue listening to the needs of businesses and industry, the healthcare field, education, and other sectors in which our graduates will work. By being attentive in this way, we help our students, our communities, and our world. It’s important to note we continue to align our academic goals to ensure our student body is prepared to meet employer expectations. Our corporate partners are an essential part of Saint Mary’s strategic plan — contributing to enrollment growth and creating opportunities for innovation. With 39 formal corporate partnerships and growing, we are excited to share the new and renewed partnerships supporting our institutional work. Key academic partnerships with other institutions in the region will also benefit all our partner schools, particularly when we align our educational approach, mission, and pursuit of excellence. We have been

excited to formalize our work with Viterbo University and Catholic Virtual Academy this past year. Viterbo offers graduate students at both schools additional opportunities, and Catholic Virtual Academy offers Catholic high school students college credit at Saint Mary’s. This fall, we’ve dedicated an additional facility of learning and discovery in Winona. Aquinas Hall houses our business, science, and psychology programs, and our newest B.S. in Nursing program. Having stateof-the-art facilities helps with recruitment and aids learning. None of this would be possible without you, our generous benefactors, who provide us with the resources we need to expand and grow to meet students’ needs. Whether you have shared your time, talent, treasure, or testimony; whether you support the annual fund, building enhancements, scholarships, or particular programs or initiatives, please know how much your gifts mean to this university and our students. We are confident our graduates will be in a position to one day give back for the gifts that have been provided to them, through people like you, creating an endless circle of generosity. I urge you to share your love of Saint Mary’s by referring a student to us, touring our campuses, hiring our graduates, offering an internship, or considering mentoring. To find out where to begin, call Bob Fisher, senior director of alumni and benefactor engagement, at 507-457-6658. We look to you to help us connect with the people who can further the mission of empowering students to ethical lives of service and leadership. There’s no better investment than education. Today’s students will be tomorrow’s doctors, lawyers, educators, business leaders, and change agents. What does a Saint Mary’s education mean? In a word: more. Thank you for all that you do. May God continue to bless you richly and bless our work at Saint Mary’s University.

Alumni honor inspirational professor Throughout Dr. Marilyn Frost’s career, her office door was always open. And now, thanks to some of the very first students she taught at Saint Mary’s (then College), office door 339B in the newly renovated Aquinas Hall will permanently bear her name. When Frost began teaching psychology at Saint Mary’s in 1969, she was not much older than the students in her classrooms. She and her progressive attitude arrived at the pivotal moment when the school was transitioning from an all men’s school to coeducational. In the world outside of the university, life was even more tumultuous. In the early ’70s, with the Vietnam War raging, students were being drafted. Meanwhile, the Civil Rights movement was occurring. There was much to talk about and much work to be done, more than could ever occur during normal office and classroom hours. Greg Stevens ’74 and Mike Heiges ’74, both psychology majors, describe Dr. Frost as an excellent teacher and mentor, but also friend — so much so that a core group from their class has stayed in touch with her for 50 years. “The word that comes to mind most is caring,” Stevens said. “She always had a real interest and really cared about what we were doing.” He and Heiges recall students gathering with faculty outside of the classroom, including in the pub on Friday nights, to “soul search” about what was happening in the world. “She was one of the lead people,” he said. “She paved the way for women. She’s a very, very bright person, and very smart academically.” “She was business-like and also warm,” Heiges added. “She was very intent that you walked away with concrete pieces of information and knowledge but she was always there, both inside and outside of class. Greg and I are not the exceptions; within our class, there were many people whom she influenced. In the last 50 years, she has always been a presence in our lives. She has been with us since we raised our children and embarked on our careers.” As Stevens is a university trustee, he heard about the renovation of what was formerly called the Adducci Science Center’s Brother Charles

and Hoffman Halls. He and Heiges had just finished their 45th class reunion in 2019. Knowing that Dr. Frost had a tremendous impact on their lives, as well as so many of their classmates, and that the newly renovated space would house psychology, they decided to raise the funds to name a space in her honor. After the reunion, a number of classmates decided to raise the $30,000 required to establish the Marilyn Frost, Ph.D. Collegial Faculty Office, dedicated Oct. 15, 2021.

2020-2021 INVESTOR’S REPORT

Marilyn Frost, Ph.D., Collegial Faculty Office This space is dedicated to Dr. Marilyn Frost, a cherished and longtime member of the Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota community. Her work began in 1969 as a professor in the department of Psychology. Her later appointments included those of administrator and dean of the graduate school, before she finished her career as a professor emerita and member of the board of trustees. Esteemed for her sustained excellence in teaching and long-term commitment to the values of the university, Dr. Frost earned – among several awards and accolades – the Bishop Heffron Service Award in 1994 and the Brother Charles H. Severin, FSC, Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2005. A brilliant educator, she was a compassionate leader who took time to shepherd students through academia and the challenges of personal growth. A valued role model, mentor, and friend, the Saint Mary’s University community is grateful for her unfailing dedication. Led by efforts from the Class of 1974, this office was sponsored in honor of Dr. Frost for her 50 years of service, and as a testament to the meaningful impact she has had on so many lives.

“Many of these people have had contact with Marilyn in various ways,” Stevens said. “She had a significant impact in the lives of many, many students of the class of 1974 but, more importantly, ever since then. Marilyn was a role model. She had a real impact on the women in the class of 1974 and a number of the people who gave are women who became successful doctors, psychologists, businesswomen, and artists. I’ve been fortunate because (continued)

I’ve been able to observe her in other roles as a dean and on the board of trustees. She just finished her tenure on the board. Her institutional knowledge and perspective is a tremendous asset for the university.” “As time has gone on, Marilyn has generously given her time and energy to former students and friends,” Heiges added. “It’s a small way for us to say we remember, and we appreciate all that she’s done.” Dr. Frost describes the gesture as both humbling and touching. “I’ve known this group for more than 50 years; that covers my adult life,” she said. “We have stayed connected. And I have to say (this recognition) is so touching. However, I have felt very acknowledged by them already. When you see them over their lifetimes at various stages, you revisit what is meaningful.” As a psychologist, Dr. Frost specializes in personality psychology — studying the behavior patterns, dynamics, and well-being of people throughout their lives. She explains that longitudinal psychology, which follows the same group of people throughout a long period of time, is very valuable but often expensive, time-consuming, and therefore not often done. So staying connected to this group of alumni over the course of their adult lives has been meaningful both personally and professionally. “To know people who were once my students and now are flourishing has been the privilege of a lifetime,” she said. “It’s a very special relationship, and it’s been a treasure and a gift.”

Dr. Frost is excited that psychology will have its place in the new facility, dedicated to interdisciplinary innovation. “I’m committed to the entire endeavor,” she said. “Psychology is a hub discipline that connects to both science and business. ”The majority of these alumni were psychology majors who spent their lives in the sciences and business and entrepreneurship and law, the same areas that business will connect,” she added. “These alumni, as students, were idealistic, very connected, and committed, and to see how they’ve lived this out throughout their lives is wonderful. If you want to talk about ethical lives of service and leadership, you are talking about these adults. They’ve contributed professionally and philanthropically in their families, careers, and communities. And they’ve stayed connected; it’s a wonderful statement about Saint Mary’s.”

Bilski hopes to leave legacy through service 12

Matt Bilski ’07 originally chose Saint Mary’s because of the opportunities that existed to do undergraduate research as part of his biology degree. Working side by side with Dr. Richard Kowles, biology professor emeritus, Bilski assisted with his ongoing corn and oat genetics research, received prestigious grants, completed a summer internship, and was a contributing author on one of Dr. Kowles’ published research papers. “Getting the experience of doing actual research at such a young age was so valuable,” he said. “It was exposure to what I began doing from day one on my job out of college.” Bilski began working at Ecolab 14 years ago, straight out of college. Ecolab is the global leader in water, hygiene, and infection prevention solutions and services that protect people and vital resources. As lead chemist/project manager, Bilski works with new product innovation, from first-level ideation to launching the product into the market. For the past seven years, he has focused specifically on beverage and brewery customers in North America. And Saint Mary’s, he said, helped him get where he is “100 percent.” This is why Bilski gives back to Saint Mary’s in so many ways, including serving on the alumni board from 2015-2021 (and as president from 2018-2020) and now in a newly formed role as a young alumnus on the board of trustees. Looking back at his and the alumni board’s accomplishments, Bilski said, a highlight was serving on the board when Father James P. Burns, IVD, Ph.D., was named president. He is also proud of the work the alumni board made in setting clear goals and objectives and working toward them as a team, particularly in the areas of development and engagement with both graduate and undergraduate alumni. “We’ve had upwards of 30-40 people apply for open board positions. It is phenomenal that we have that much interest from those wanting to be part of the alumni board,” he said. Representing 54,000 alumni, he said, was both rewarding and humbling. “I’m not necessarily going to see eye to eye with everyone all the time, but I hope my time on the board and as a trustee can be seen as a positive and influential voice on behalf of the alumni for Saint Mary’s now and in the future,” he said. “If, 10-20 years from now, nobody remembers I was on the board, but the things we tried to do are still going strong, that to me would be the ultimate legacy.”

Matt Bilski ’07 has served on the Saint Mary’s Alumni Board and is now serving on the board of trustees.

One of the best parts about being on the alumni board, Bilski said, was the opportunity to be more involved with the university on a deeper level and reconnecting with faculty and staff, as well as meeting new employees. He looks forward to further building those relationships on the board of trustees, and he’ll bring new insight to the board as someone who can relate well with the university’s graduate students, who are often balancing families and careers. “I hope I can bring a voice, especially for the young alumni,” he said. “The trustees are more experienced in their careers. I have three young children, and my wife and I are still in the early middle stages of our careers. I may bring a different perspective to the discussions, and I look forward to working with them.” He and his wife Jocelyn also generously support Cardinal Athletics, the Saint Mary’s Fund, and the Science Initiative. “On the alumni board, our passion project is the annual fund, which isn’t exciting but it’s important, and it allows for so many things to happen,” he said.

“And the new addition to Aquinas Hall (which now encompasses the former Adducci Science Center and the former Science and Learning Center) continues to expand research opportunities for students across disciplines. “This mirrors many industries today and is a crucial connection I am thrilled to see being embraced by Saint Mary’s,” he said. “I think the direction the university is going with the deliberate merging of the sciences and business together is such a great idea. It is such a smart way to look at the future.” Bilski’s position is a prime example of this pairing. At Ecolab, he said 60-70% of his work is more business-related and 30-40% is a science research role. “Most people with biology degrees are going to

end up doing something in the private sector with a publicly traded company. Having that understanding of business and technology and how those things come together and getting exposed to that at such a young age is so beneficial. “I look back very fondly on my time at Saint Mary’s,” he added. “I think a big part of who I am today is because of the experiences I had there. I want those students there now to have similar experiences. My family has always been very philanthropic, so I grew up in that environment. When I find organizations that have benefitted me and that I believe in strongly, I want to support that. College is expensive, and I really value the Lasallian Catholic nature of the university. The ethical and moral components students receive as part of the Lasallian education are beneficial for students as both individuals and in their professional careers. “At Saint Mary’s, you learn a specific skill but also what type of person you want to be.”

Kuhns fuel Cardinals for competition 14

Nick ’07 and Marie (Fay) ’05 Kuhn have built their business around building community. They know that so often friendships are celebrated and strengthened by breaking bread together. This is especially true considering the number of breadsticks they’ve served to the Saint Mary’s baseball team. The Kuhns say they are both huge sports fans and are maybe a bit biased for the Cardinals, as Nick played outfield and catcher on the team alongside current coach Nick Winecke ’07. They’re also big fans of Saint Mary’s. Marie studied public relations, while Nick majored in management and entrepreneurship. They met at Saint Mary’s and even got married on campus. And now, after following their dreams and opening NorthEnd Pub & Grill in Cochrane, Wis., they are finding ways to give back to the place that brought them together. For starters, they’ve sponsored a locker in the new baseball clubhouse and catered several meals for the team, particularly during breaks when the team is still on campus. They served the team a meal, in kind, this past year as a congratulations and in preparation before their NCAA tournament. “They are always there to help,” Winecke said. “They’re just great people. They’ve worked really hard to run their business and have great clientele. They love to give back, and they’re everything that’s good about Saint Mary’s.” Winecke is not only a fan of the Kuhns, he’s also a fan of their food, including burgers, pizzas, paninis, or wings. He says the couple has fed the baseball team a taco bar, pastas, grilled chicken and ribs — food that spoils them for regular cafeteria food. And, Winecke adds, he isn’t always the best at giving them advance notice in feeding his team of more than 50. “About a day and a half at the most,” Nick Kuhn responds with a laugh. The Kuhns say it’s amazing to watch their food be consumed so quickly and with such appreciation. At one point, Marie Kuhn remembers going through an entire case of 300 breadsticks. Why do they give back? Marie Kuhn answers simply, “We really just love it. We love being able to do those things. We love to be helpful to Coach Winecke whenever we can do something for him because he’s such a good friend. That program was really important to where we are today. Every stepping stone is important. We both love baseball, too.” “The baseball team, they treat you like you’re one of them, even 15-20 years later,” Nick Kuhn adds. “They bring our son, Connor, who is 7, out on the field

and play catch with him. They treat him like their little brother. He’s been going to games since he was born.” When Nick Kuhn thinks back on his time on the baseball team, he thinks of memories from the locker room, practices, and long trips — of friendships you never forget. Some teammates have worked at the restaurant part time. “Being from Chicago, I didn’t know anyone when I got there,” he said. “I never left. Nick (Winecke) hired me as an assistant one year and I was a junior varsity coach one year. I stayed in the area until I migrated here.” The two have also come back to speak with Saint Mary’s entrepreneurship students about tips for starting their own businesses. “It can be done,” Nick Kuhn said. “We built this from the ground level up. You need to work hard, but it’s rewarding to be able to tell them that it can be done.” When they started the restaurant, Marie Kuhn said they started with a blank canvas. They knew they wanted to have a sports bar, but they invited the community to help mold the business into what they needed it to be. “They have welcomed us wholeheartedly,” she said. “It’s really great to be part of a small town and give back with things like T-ball Chicken Qs. People really appreciate you. And it’s rewarding when people choose to spend their time with us.” Nick Kuhn adds, “It’s full circle; we cater everything from baptisms to funerals.”

Nick ’07 and Marie (Fay) ’05 Kuhn

The two especially love when recognizable Saint Mary’s faculty, staff, or alumni drop by. And they do their best to promote the university whenever they can. “At Saint Mary’s, I primarily remember the community feel,” Marie Kuhn said. “I remember feeling people really cared about you. On a small campus,

you knew everybody. I just loved my experience. We’re really proud that we are alumni. “Every time we see an alum or someone from school in the pub, we do feel special,” she added. “When I see a Saint Mary’s T-shirt, I love to ask. There’s always a connection. It’s a family, and people love to share.”

Sharing the Saint Mary’s experience 16

Giving time and financial support are common ways people give back to their alma maters. Saint Mary’s graduate Veronica Hiza M’15, M’17 does just that by serving as a member of the school’s alumni board. But she gives back in another way as well. The double master’s graduate is a cheerleader for the university and goes out of her way to spread the message of her experience at Saint Mary’s. And that has paid off! Hiza has seen her husband and son, David Hiza Sr. ’16, M’17 and David Hiza Jr. ’17, M’21, graduate with master’s degrees from Saint Mary’s. Her daughter, Natalia Hiza, is currently pursuing an M.S. in Business Intelligence and Data Veronica Hiza Analytics. M’15, M’17 And the list of family members who have attended Saint Mary’s doesn’t end there. “I can probably name eight to 10 other family members,” Hiza chuckled. “It’s because I talk about Saint Mary’s, I like to advertise it. I’m pro-education as much as I can be.” Before choosing Saint Mary’s for two master’s degrees, Hiza had been working full time in project management. Knowing she needed to take the next step in her career, Hiza decided to take the Project Management Professional certification exam. Having known multiple people who had to take the exam more than once, Hiza decided going back to school would be one of the best ways to prepare. After receiving her M.S. in Project Management, she felt the call to continue learning, so she enrolled once again at Saint Mary’s in the M.S. in Information Technology Management program. Hiza says the most beneficial part of attending Saint Mary’s was learning from professionals who work in the same field as her. “It was like being taught by a colleague,” Hiza said. “It just made it so conversational. It was always a nice opportunity to discuss real-life things and things that were happening in my job.” After earning two graduate degrees from Saint Mary’s, she has seen the payoff: her ability to learn concepts that were included in the Project Management Professional certification process helped her through the exam. She’s also seen the real-world

concepts taught in the classroom aid her in her job with Minnesota IT Services. Not long after graduating, she was contacted about serving on the alumni board. Hiza was torn at the time because she had also been asked to serve on the alumni board of her undergraduate alma mater.

2020-2021 INVESTOR’S REPORT

Veronica Hiza M’15, M’17 works at one of the Reunion Weekend events in Winona.

Ultimately, she felt her time would be better served at Saint Mary’s. Hiza says there are many things that helped inform her decision, one of the biggest being the different perspective she’s able to bring to the table at alumni board meetings. With a key focus on engaging with graduate students and getting them to give back to Saint Mary’s, Hiza says she’s able to share the experience of students at the Twin Cities Campus with the alumni board. A native of Tanzania, she says she is also able to bring the perspective of an international student from her experience as an undergraduate. “I think I’ve been a voice for both perspectives,” she said. Serving on the alumni board has also given Hiza a better understanding of the decisions made by the university. “There are a lot of conversations people don’t think about,” she said. “For instance, how much of a struggle it is to raise funding to build a science center. If you’re not close to it, you’re not going to know.” What drives Hiza to give her time, as well as financial contributions, to Saint Mary’s comes down to one simple belief: “Giving keeps the spirit going. That way, someone can benefit in the same way you did.” Hiza has done her best to use her position with the alumni board to strengthen the university and support its students. This includes the opportunity to mentor two of Saint Mary’s First Generation Initiative students as they entered graduate school. “I really enjoyed helping in that way because I do that for my kids: teach them what to do in this life after school,” she said. “So, I like to do that for other students who have graduated from Saint Mary’s or are currently going to Saint Mary’s.” Another highlight for Hiza while serving on the board was the chance to address graduates during a commencement ceremony at the university’s Twin Cities Campus. “It was very fulfilling just to see the excitement in their faces and to be on the other side watching that,” she said. During her speech, Hiza urged the graduates to remain active with the university, even after receiving a degree. And it’s something she encourages all graduates to do. “The more engaged we are in giving back to our school, the healthier and richer the school gets in teaching and thinking outside of the box. And Saint Mary’s has always been very good about thinking outside of the box,” she said.

Information you need to know for year-end gifts Thanks to generous benefactors like you, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota receives many gifts in December as the calendar–and tax year–comes to an end. To ensure that you are able to realize income tax charitable deductions in 2021 for gifts to Saint Mary’s, we want you to know the following requirements and recommendations: 1. Gifts made by check are complete upon delivery or mailing. This S M T W T F S year, any gift 1 2 3 4 by check must 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 be delivered 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 to the 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 Development 26 27 28 29 30 31 Office by the close of business on Dec. 31, 2021, or mailed to Saint Mary’s University by the time of the last mail pick-up on Dec. 31, 2021. If you mail a check to Saint Mary’s, the envelope must be postmarked Dec. 31, 2021, or earlier in order for Saint Mary’s to acknowledge your gift as made in 2021. Mailing a check on Jan. 1, 2022, regardless of the date on the check, is considered a gift contributed in 2022.

DECEMBER 2021

2. Gifts made with a credit card are complete when the gift is charged. Thus, gifts made by credit card through the Saint Mary’s online giving site must be completed no later than 11:55 p.m. on Dec. 31. Credit card gifts can also be made by phone during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays) and, as noted above, can be made online any time at smumn.edu/giving. 3. We recommend that gifts of securities be initiated no later than Dec. 14, 2021, to ensure completion of the transaction by the end of the year. Gifts of stocks and securities can easily be transferred by contacting Megan Sadowski M’08, assistant vice president of Advancement, at giving@ smumn.edu. Please contact the Advancement Office at 507-457-6647 for more information.

Two stories, one mission As a former teacher, working at a college with a Lasallian mission made sense to Kate Utterback. Prior to becoming the director of campus operations and programming at Saint Mary’s Rochester Campus, Utterback spent several years in undergraduate student affairs and advising. But her background as a teacher is what brought her to her new position where she oversees the day-to-day operations at the Rochester Campus. “It’s one of the things that drew me in, especially on the graduate side,” she said. “I was really interested in working with graduate students and their interest in returning to the classroom.” Working in a university setting, Utterback said she knew the importance of philanthropic giving to her institution. However, her approach to giving changed after she was asked to serve on the hiring committee for the associate director of the Saint Mary’s Fund. “That really opened my eyes to how important small donations can be,” Utterback said. “Of course we welcome large donors, but those can be one-time gifts. As I was talking to the people

Christine Beech, D.M., executive director of the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies

2020-2021 INVESTOR’S REPORT

Faculty and staff define dedication at Saint Mary’s. Alumni and students frequently reflect back on how much the faculty and staff supported them throughout their college careers. It’s these hard-working individuals who help the university maintain its strong reputation for having personalized attention. Beyond sharing their time and talents, many faculty and staff also philanthropically give back to Saint Mary’s because they believe in the work we’re doing — together.

who were applying and the people on the committee, I learned how important it is to have small continuous donations. Whether that’s from alumni, people in the community, or staff members.” A regular contributor to the First Generation Initiative at the university, she also began donating to the Saint Mary’s Fund, knowing her donations would go to where they are critically needed. In her current role, Utterback doesn’t have to look far to see the effect her giving and the giving of others has on the university. “Managing a campus, I see how valuable space is, and people’s donations can go toward the costs of running a campus and keeping a campus up to date with the newest technology. And all of that benefits our students so they can be successful,” she said. And for Utterback, the success of students goes back to the mission that brought her to Saint Mary’s in the first place. “We’re a personal and attentive university trying to teach innovation, develop graduates with the same kind of mission-driven mind, and empower them to go out and become global leaders,” she said.

Christine Beech, D.M., sees the impact giving can have on an institution of higher education daily in her role as the executive director of the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. The Kabara Institute was formed at Saint Mary’s after a generous donation was made by Dr. Jon ’48 and Betty Kabara to foster entrepreneurship among all students at the university, regardless of their field of study. As the director of the institute, Beech works with students as they develop business ideas and even go on to pitch those ideas to receive funding. “I love watching students come up with new, innovative ideas. I love helping them bring that to life, which has been a passion project for me,” she said. “And it doesn’t just benefit the students. It benefits society at large.” Seeing the benefit the Kabara Institute can have on Saint Mary’s students is part of what drives Beech to give back to the university.

“I find our students and student body to be very motivated. They’re hard-working, and they’re fully engaged,” she said. “I give because I want them to succeed.” Beech came to Saint Mary’s four years ago in search of an opportunity to pursue her interest in faith-based entrepreneurship. The school’s mission also called out to her. “What I’ve seen here is a passion on the part of the faculty to serve the students,” she said. “I feel that is unique to Saint Mary’s. There is an overriding desire to see the students succeed.” And for Beech, a firm belief in the Lasallian charism is another part of why she gives to the university. “If you think about the Lasallian focus of ensuring that students get one-on-one interaction, that they’re given a chance to succeed, that they’re given a chance to pursue education and mentorship from faculty, none of that happens without philanthropy,” she said. “If you want that type of environment for students, you have to come alongside and support it.”

SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

Lasallian Legacy Society 40

The Lasallian Legacy Society at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota honors those generous benefactors who have made a commitment to the legacy of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, through their planned gifts to Saint Mary’s. John Baptist de La Salle created an education model that balanced the skills for success with the understanding of personal responsibility, leadership, faith, and service to others. Today, gifts of the blessings of this life provide the strong financial foundation that ensures a Lasallian Catholic education at Saint Mary’s for future generations. We are honored to list the names of alumni, parents, and friends who have made provisions for Saint Mary’s in their charitable gift plans, as well as those who have completed their earthly journeys, leaving behind a legacy at Saint Mary’s through their planned gifts. Saint Mary’s is deeply grateful to all of our benefactors for their generosity, and we remember them all, living and departed, in our prayer at Mass each day.
