Editor | NOTES

BLOOMING, BUILDING

BASKETBALL

After the winter we’ve had at Smith Mountain Lake, I’m looking forward to spring even more than usual. I’m ready for the beautiful blooming dogwoods and redbuds, ready for longer days, more time spent outside and knowing that fun times on the lake aren’t far off. But I’ve got one other thing that truly makes my heart sing this time of year: March Madness. As anyone who knows me will tell you, I’m a Jayhawk to the core. I graduated from Kansas in 1992 and revel in its basketball tradition (which includes having James Naismith, the inventor of the game, as the university’s first coach). Yes, basketball season’s culmination brings out a joy in me that simply can’t be dampened, not even by the grating, incendiary comments by my Duke-grad boss. In that spirit, this issue of the Smith Mountain Laker includes an article by Entertaining columnist Karen Cromwell on hosting your own March Madness party (Page 90). From invitations, to decorating, games, music and food, she’s put together creative ideas that will make the season’s hoop-fest even more enjoyable. Spring is also when many of us feel compelled to begin projects in the home and garden. Landscape expert Catriona Tudor Erler has a rundown of the area’s nurseries and the products and services in which each specializes (Page 26). And a considerable portion of this issue is dedicated to our annual Home Guide, which begins on Page 35. Inside, you’ll find several related feature stories as well as a comprehensive list of SML-area building professionals. So whether you’re planning to build a new home, remodel an existing one or

are in need of a resource to find a business in any of 29 buildingrelated categories, keep the Home Guide handy all year. Rock Chalk,

Andie Gibson Editor

A law signed by President Obama on January 22 lets you take an early tax deduction for contributions you make for earthquake relief to Haiti. And if you use your cell phone to donate via a text message, the new law gives you an easier method for substantiating your contribution.

If you itemize deductions on your tax return, you may elect to take a charitable deduction on your 2009 return for Haiti contributions made after January 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010. Claiming a 2010 contribution on your 2009 return will give you an earlier tax benefit, though you may also wait until you file your 2010 return to take the deduction. Here are other important details. • The contributions must be made specifically for relief related to the January 12, 2010, earthquake in Haiti. • The contributions must be made to qualified charities, rather than to specific individuals. • Only cash contributions qualify for the earlier 2009 deduction option; contributions of property or goods do not qualify. • Contributions made to foreign charities generally don’t qualify. • You’ll need records to substantiate any deductible donations you make. But a special easing of the rules will allow you to use your telephone bill as substantiation for donations made by text message. The phone bill must show the name of the organization receiving your donation, the date of the contribution, and the amount you gave. For other donation methods, you’ll need a bank record or written communication from the charity. • If you claim a Haiti relief deduction on your 2009 return, you may not also claim the same donation on your 2010 return (which you’ll be filing in 2011). To decide whether to take the deduction on your 2009 or 2010 return, run the numbers to see which year will give you the bigger tax savings. For 2009, higher-income taxpayers have a limit on their total itemized deductions. This limit is eliminated for 2010, so the deduction could actually provide a bigger tax break if taken on your 2010 tax return. Please give me a call for any additional information, filing assistance or for any other assistance concerning your individual and business accounting and tax needs; please feel free to contact me at (540) 297-4204. Bridal Tribute It was so exciting to share our wedding day with the Smith Mountain Lake community and other Lakers who may be planning an SML wedding. Briggs and I loved The Water’s Edge chapel so much and were eager to share the images with locals [“Hearts at Home, January/February 2010]. Kudos to the Laker Magazine

Shout Out Loud I cannot express how thankful I am for the article about “Lake Effects that ran in your last issue [“Embracing a New Role, January/February 2010]. What that article has done for the awareness of our film cannot be measured. We have had potential investors contact us because they read the article, and it seems everyone I run into, even complete strangers,

know about the film because of your magazine. [Writer] Lindsey Wagnon did such an amazing job capturing the project that we have sent copies off to all of our interested film distributors and television networks in Hollywood, as well as a number of the recognizable actors/actresses we are hoping to work with. Your impact on this film has been priceless and I thank you!

Sara Elizabeth Timmins Producer/Creative Director Life Out Loud Films

Artist Applause I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful story [“Fragments to Fine art, January/February 2010]. The mosaic-type photo arrangement was very fitting, too! Thanks to Kim [Dillon], for the nice photographs. All of your staff does a really wonderful job with this

publication and it is a real plus for the community.

Dotti Stone, Owner SML Mosaics

Singing a Sweet Song We just wanted to thank you so much for the recent story in the Laker [“Spreading their Wings, January/February 2010]. We have had several new customers in and loved the story. The Greene family thanks you very much!

Mary and Steve Campbell of Moneta traveled to India last September, making stops in Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur and Jaipur. The Campbells described their travels as an enjoyable, educational and enlightening experience.

Gary and Carol Noesner of Moneta celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with a trip to Greece. In addition to Athens, the Noesners visited Santorini, where they posed for this photo. The island is noted for its white painted homes perched high along the edge of the ancient rim that formed the island.

Patrick O’Leary took this photo of his wife, Ann, in front of the Kylmäpihlaja Lighthouse, six miles off the shore of Rauma, Finland. The O’Learys are on a two-year assignment working for a company building a nuclear power plant in Finland. When in the U.S., the O’Leary’s make their home in Moneta.

Rod and Bev Pitta, of SML and Raleigh, N.C., visited the southern most point of Key West, Fla., while celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary last September. Rod announced the occasion in the local newspaper, inviting residents and visitors of the island to “offer your condolences to Bev for putting up with me for all these years.”

Ken and Alma Mathis of Moneta celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary in September 2009 with a trip to Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. The lake’s maximum depth has been measured at 1,949 feet, making it the deepest lake in the U.S. and seventh deepest in the world. It was created by a volcanic eruption.

After navigating the pirate-infested waters off the East African coast, marine engineer Wes Williamson of Huddleston posed with the Laker (held tightly against the desert wind) while cruising through the Suez Canal for passage to the Mediterranean Sea. In the backround is a war memorial shaped like a giant bayonet.

WHEN

Bill and Patty Bundy bought their Smith Mountain Lake home in 2002, there was no question they were ready to begin enjoying life at the lake. But, they wondered, would they like it enough to live here full time? Patty, a psychologist, and Bill, whose company, The Bundy Group, helps people buy and sell businesses, still had their home in Roanoke where they had lived for 25 years. Having the lake house meant the couple could try out living in a picturesque Betty’s Creek setting while commuting to work in Roanoke. "The 35-minute drive each way turned out to be a nonissue," said Bill, who commuted for four years before the couple began an extensive renovation of their SML home. "The beauty of the surroundings at the lake just can’t be beat. When we would leave Roanoke and cross Windy Gap, we’d feel like we had left all the tension and stress of that world behind." Once they decided they liked being resident Lakers, the Bundys worked with architect Jennifer Smith-Lewis for more than a year, planning a remodel of their one-story ranch that would retain its original footprint but expand from 3,100 to 4,500 square feet. LIVING CONTINUED "She knew we were changing not only where we live, but how we live," Patty said. "We were downsizing, leaving our formal days behind to enjoy a more relaxed way of living, and we wanted our home’s spaces to be efficient and multi-purpose." The Bundys, who have been married for 38 years, put everything except two seasons of clothing in storage. They lived in the home’s basement during the renovation, which was handled by Roanoke-based Pitman Construction Company. The timeline and task list for the work, which began in June 2007, was posted on a kitchen wall. The Bundys, the architect and the builder met every Thursday to assess progress. "The builder never got behind. We did not even have a ripple. It was a very positive experience," Bill said. Six months later, the couple and their Labrador retriever, Joker, a mental health service dog who goes to work with Patty, moved up stairs into their remodeled home. The Arts and Crafts-style bungalow, which was featured on the 2009 SML Charity Home Tour, includes additional living space to meet the needs of family and guests. With their master suite on the main floor, the couple can live on one level. The newly added second floor has a guest parents’ bedroom, Jack-and-Jill bath, children’s bedroom and a den. There is a similar guest area on the lower level. The Smurf-blue carpeting and the interior walls of the original ranch, built in the early 1980s, were torn out, and the rooms reconfigured. The new rooms were designed around five pieces of antique furniture: a 1700s pewter cabinet with homemade nails in the entryway; a desk and an 1800s cherry corner cupboard in the dining room; antique beds in the upstairs suite; a rope bed in the downstairs guest area; and, in the living room, a 700-pound farm table from Utah. The living room is a large, glassed-in, porch-like space with no curtains to obstruct the lake view. The large home office has a glass wall above his-and-her desks that lets the Bundys gaze out at the lake through the living room windows. The dining room, between the kitchen and living room and accessed from both the study and entry hall, is multipurpose – a gathering place, an intimate dining area with a cozy fireplace nearby, a dining area for a crowd when table seating is expanded, and a display space for antique furniture and collectibles in cabinets which dictated the exact room measurements. There are double dishwashers in the kitchen and drawers with built-ins and cabinets made to precisely accommodate the couple’s glasses, dishes and kitchen accessories. Downstairs, a large outdoor patio is dominated by a lovely stone fireplace with a short stone wall that provides extra seating for a crowd. The crew includes daughter Melany and husband Jim Mullens, who live on the Blackwater, and son Clint and wife Holly Bundy of Charlotte, N.C. Lake-area nurseries offer a broad range of services and specialties There are horticultural treasures at our fingertips at Smith Mountain Lake available at a wide variety of nurseries. Each nursery has a different strength or focus. Together, they add up to an excellent resource for both the avid gardener and those who want a low-maintenance landscape or who just want to express their creativity with a few well-planted containers.

The Growing Place

From the road you’d never guess the horticultural wonders available under the triple hoop houses at The Growing Place. In the 64,000-square-foot space, you’ll find a huge selection of perennials, including a wide choice of fern species, the latest exciting coral bells hybrids, sedums, hellebores, native plants, and hybrid coneflowers in a wide array of sunset colors. In the spring, you’ll find 50 varieties of tomatoes and an excellent selection of herbs, vegetables and hanging baskets. Owned by the Bayer family since 1982, Rachel Bayer, daughter of the founders, has been running The Growing Place since 1993. The Bayers grow 95 percent of their stock from tiny plugs, seeds and rooted cuttings. That’s a boon to customers because it means they are able to offer a wide selection of high-quality plants at low prices.

Lakescapes Nursery

A full-service nursery with two locations, Lakescapes provides landscape design and maintenance, has an excellent selection of trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials, and an informed staff to help customers make educated choices. But what makes Lakescapes stand out from other local nurseries is the incredible selection of ceramic containers. You’ll find hundreds of glazed pots in a wide variety of colors, shapes, sizes and designs ranging from traditional to avant-garde. It’s filled with a treasure trove of awesome amphora and urns. GARDENING CONTINUED Walter’s Greenhouse

A family owned business, the Walters grow a wide assortment of annuals and perennials which they sell in 2 ½-inch to 4-inch pots as well as in larger sizes. They also feature beautifully planted containers with creative, eye-catching flower and foliage combinations. You can buy one ready planted, or be inspired to create your own design. Another outstanding feature is an A-to-Z selection of herb, tomato and pepper varieties in starter-size containers. You’ll find heirloom as well as modern tomatoes, mild to tongue-exploding chili and pepper plants, and just about any herb you can think of, including named varieties of rosemary (different growth habits, flower color and hardiness) and lavender. Don’t miss the topiary animals, such as cats with “fiber optic” grass whiskers. A bit down the road from SML, but worth the trip.

Willowtree Nursery

Willowtree Nursery is the place to go for a wide selection of homegrown Proven Winners-brand plants as well as trees; shrubs, including natives; and Belgard landscape pavers and wall systems. Owner Brad Moles, who opened Willowtree Nursery in 1988, grows 30-40 varieties of the Proven Winners plants, which are tested and proven to perform bountifully in gardens throughout the country. An excellent plantsman with a Landscape Horticulture degree from Virginia Tech, Moles also provides landscape-design services, including lakeside buffer gardens that meet American Electric Power shoreline requirements.

Blackwater Nursery

Dave Jones’s family has been in the nursery business in Carroll County since 1902. In 1984, Jones opened his own nursery in Rocky Mount, and has been overseeing the family run business since. Son Bryan handles the landscaping- and hardscaping-design services while daughter Jillian manages the retail side of the business. Dave focuses on growing the trees and shrubs. “We grow about 80 percent of what we sell,” he said, which is great news for lake residents because you know you’re getting plants that are well adapted to this area.

Moneta Farm and Home Center

Moneta Farm and Home Center has been offering garden and farm supplies (plants as well as seeds, fertilizers, mulch, compost, manure, top soil, pest- and weed-control products, and statuary and ornaments) since 1973. You’ll find an excellent power-equipment department, including lawn mowers (push and riding), tillers, weed whackers, and electric or gas-powered hedge trimmers offered at competitive prices. The power-equipment department, which also provides fullservice maintenance and repairs, is run by Jim Woodford, one of several members of the family’s third generation to be involved in the business. A one-stop shop for many products, you’ll also find products associated with farm and hardware stores, as well as an assortment of items hard to find anywhere else. Catriona Tudor Erler is a freelance garden writer, photographer and speaker who divides her time between SML and Charlottesville. She is the author of nine garden books, including “Design Ideas for Home Landscaping,” “Poolscaping: Gardening and Landscaping Around Your Pool and Spa,” and “Complete Home Landscaping.” 28

Golf-Ready Local pros offer tips to prepare fo the upcoming season

Story by Lindsey Wagnon • Photography by Kim Dillon and courtesy of The Willard Companies

March • April 2010 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

IN

the coming weeks, golfers around Smith Mountain Lake will pull out the tees, polish the irons and hit the links. Golf season is on the horizon. But before you can work on lowering that handicap, you need to work on getting in good golf shape. Golf professionals from SML’s four 18-hole courses are “pitching” in to help. Try following these tips to help reduce the risk of injury, improve your game and make this golf season your best yet.

With your feet flat on the ground, stand with your back to a wall approximately one arm length away. Twist your upper body around until you can touch the wall (one hand on the wall is good, both hands is great). Twist back to your start position and then twist to the other side. This exercise will stretch your back muscles, making them stronger so you can make a full turn during your golf swing.

MAKE PUTTING PROGRESS PRACTICE PITCHING

The short game is by far the most essential part of any golf game. It doesn’t matter how far you hit the ball if you cannot get the ball in the hole. Here’s a good chipping drill to do in the comfort of your own home: Line up three or four laundry baskets or buckets of different sizes at different distances. Determine a point value for each basket based on distance and size. Use whiffle golf balls to practice pitching. Compete with yourself or a friend to see who can earn the most points. This is a fun way to practice your chipping/pitching motion and have some fun with your fellow golfers.

My top suggestion is to practice putting. Gaining confidence on the greens can help reduce your total number of putts per round, takes the pressure off your long game and can significantly lower your overall score. Try this drill to get your putter on track: Line up in your putting stance. Take one golf ball and place it close to the heel of your putter and another ball close to the toe of your putter. Using a third ball, take your normal putting stroke and try to strike the center. If your putter hits either of the outside balls, it means your putting stoke is not square to the putting line. Keep practicing until you can strike the center ball without hitting either of the outside balls.

HIT THE WEIGHTS

START STRETCHING

The best thing to do to get ready for the upcoming golf season is to work on your flexibility. Follow these two easy stretching and twisting techniques: Hold a golf club with the grip in one hand and the head of the club in the other, making a triangle with your arms and club. Lift the club over your head and stretch back, keeping your arms as straight as possible. Keep stretching until you get to a comfortable position and hold for 15 seconds. This stretch will improve flexibility with your shoulders.

Golfers who work on strength training and muscle conditioning can improve driving distance and decrease the chance of injuries. Being stronger allows you to swing the club with less effort to produce the needed results. All of the best strength exercises can be performed on weight-training machines. Incorporate leg extensions, leg curls, leg presses, chest crosses, chest presses, super pullovers, lateral raises, biceps curls, triceps extensions, back extensions, abdominal curls, neck flexions, neck extensions, weight-assisted chin-ups, and weight-assisted bar dips. For each exercise, perform one set of 8-12 repetitions and add approximately five percent more resistance whenever 12 repetitions are completed. Be sure to consult your physician before starting any exercise regimen.

Poor air quality can lead to poor health. Pollutants in your home’s air can cause dizziness, headaches, nasal congestion and fatigue, plus they can aggravate allergies and asthma. Causes of indoor air quality: They can come from many different sources inside and outside the home. For instance, furnishings, such as upholstery may release chemicals into the air. These pollutants circulate through ductwork, entering every room and living space. And if ventilation is inadequate, the pollutants multiply. MAN CAVES of Smith Mountain Lake

Versatile hangouts a popular trend with lake homeowners Story by Jerry Hale • Photography by Kim Dillon

Man•cave: Part of Speech: n thin a house frequented Definition: an area wi den. p, garage, basement or by a man, as in worksho It’s a term popularized by the DIY Network’s series about basement, attic and garage spaces that get custom-designed or decorated especially for a man and his interests. Each episode follows Tony “The Goose” Siragusa, a former defensive tackle for the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens, as an ordinary space gets transformed into a man-topia. Passions that have been thematic challenges for spaces featured on the show include listening to music, watching sports, driving cars and riding motorcycles. There have also been rooms designed for playing video games, poker, darts or pool, eating unhealthy food and washing it down with something other than milk, buffing up, and displaying hobby gear or college/sports team memorabilia, Similar displays of testosterone also have found their places in homes at Smith Mountain Lake. MAN ROOM EXTRAORDINAIRE When Brian and Heather Wyatt built their home on Gills Creek, most of the 2,500-square-foot lower level was designed to serve as a hangout for Brian and his buddies with potential for the couple to entertain as well. “One New Year’s, we had about 150 people here, and there was room for everyone to be doing something,” Brian said, gesturing to an expanse that includes a large-screen theater room, several additional flat-screen TVs, billiard and pingpong tables, two commercial arcade games, darts, wine cooler, aquarium, cigar humidor and massive U-shaped bar complete with fridge, ice maker, trash compactor, kegerator, mirrored wall and several neon beer signs. Finishing of the lake level began in early 2005, shortly after Brian’s dad, Martinsville builder Cliff Wyatt, obtained the home’s Certificate of Occupancy. Brian designed the bar as a nod to his time spent behind – and occasionally seated at – commercial versions while a student at Coastal Carolina University. “Do you really want it to look all ‘messy’ like that?” Cliff Wyatt asked about the distressed design. “Yep,” Brian replied. The result looks much like it’s been plucked from a Baltimore corner taproom. Brian admits the room doubles as “all-purpose family space” now that son Rand, 3½, has the run of the house. “Life changes,” he said, “but we love it.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 40

CAVES CONTINUED A RETIREMENT “CAVE” Bob and Christi Bryden’s home, where they’ve lived since moving from Memphis, Tenn., in 2003, is an eye-catcher. Hardly cave-like, its glass expanses offer sweeping views of Betty’s Creek. On the lower level, the couple’s remodeling has produced several man-centric spaces, though the Brydens often enjoy them together. In the glassed-in game room, poker, billiard and foosball tables – all with wide-open views of the lake, dock and back yard – await friendly competition with friends and family. In 2005, Bob decided to convert a windowless basement space into a theater room/library/wine cellar combination with a center pod of 12 commercial theater seats on tiered stadium risers, each offering a perfect view of the massive screen. Collaborating on the project were carpenter Roger Walker, cabinetmaker Nelson Cline and Mr. Fix It’s Rich DeForest, who researched and installed the audio/video setup. The room is rich in carpeted vertical surfaces and oak cabinetry — storage for files, tapes, CDs, DVDs and electronics. A massive speaker is tucked in the base of the seating pod which, Bob said, “makes every seat shudder when an explosion occurs on screen.” In a back corner, beyond shelves with hundreds of favorite books, a narrow door leads to a temperaturecontrolled wine room. Its built-in bottle racks extend under the home’s main staircase, yielding lots of nooks and crannies for keeping Bob’s collection of reds organized by country of origin. NOT ALWAYS DOWN UNDER Of course, manly spaces need not be subterranean. “Bruce calls this his ‘man nest,’” said Teresa Shelton, referring to her husband’s favorite spot in the house. “He had more of a cave in our former home in Atlanta, but here, where we’ve downsized a bit, he settles for a converted room above the garage where he can surround himself with his toys.” The Shelton “man nest” includes a pool table, bigscreen TV, hunky leather sofa and low table that’s an ideal foot rest, a dry bar and a bar-height table. With his busy schedule as manager of Capps Home Building Center, most of Bruce’s nest rest takes place on Sundays when the store is closed. “It’s a good retreat for watching football with friends,” he said. Farmhouse flair

Couple cooks up a kitchen that feeds a crowd Story

by

Andie Gibson • Photography

by

Kim Dillon

and

Andie Gibson

When Russ and Judy Johnson moved off the lake and into the Franklin County countryside three years ago, they knew it was only a matter of time before they renovated the kitchen of their new home. With worn cabinets, dated appliances and tile countertops that had become dingy and un-level, the space just wasn’t working for the couple, former owners of the Blackwater Café. “We entertain a lot with our group of friends and usually everyone brings an item to contribute,” Judy Johnson said. “A lot of times there are dishes that need to be finished when they get here, and our kitchen was just not conducive to doing that. I wanted a kitchen I could be proud of.” In August 2009, after two years of planning, the Johnsons embarked on a renovation of the heart of their farmhouse-style home, which is situated on pastoral land they share with three horses, three goats, eight chickens, two dogs, two cats and various koi in the adjacent pond. Blair Graninger, owner of Kitchens by Connie at Westlake Towne Center, was hired to oversee the project. “Before, it was a typical ’80s kitchen with pickled maple cabinetry,” said Graninger, a 23-year veteran of the building industry. “It was an efficient layout, but it didn’t make best use of the space. “The new kitchen is gorgeous and very efficient. We made use of every inch of space we could, and it was modified in a way that gave them the best bang for the buck.” The remodeled kitchen features Shrock maple cabinets with a moss-colored glazed finish. The cook top was moved from the island to the east-facing wall, creating a much larger work surface. The new island, constructed of Decora cherry cabinets with a suede finish, measures 3-by-6 feet and is designed to look like a piece of furniture. “It’s great for buffet situations and when we have a lot of friends and family over,” said Johnson, noting that her favorite part of the renovation was making a trip to North Carolina with Graninger to choose granite for the countertops. “We went down every aisle, and on the last one there was a slab of granite that looked like a work of art,” Johnson said. FLAIR CONTINUED Tones of rust, gold, black and brown weave through the granite, named “Vyara Gold.” Cabinet door handles as well as new light fixtures in the kitchen and adjoining dining room are finished in a complimentary oil-rubbed bronze. All-new GE Profile stainless steel appliances were installed, including a convection oven/microwave combination. The only non-electric appliance is the cook top, which is a gas model from Wolf. Russ Johnson, who represents the Gills Creek District on Franklin County’s Board of Supervisors, said his favorite feature in the new kitchen is the refrigerator, which has a bottom freezer and doors on the top that open French-style. The configuration allows the couple to fit wide items, such as party trays, easily in the fridge. “You know what else works well that I thought was a gimmick,” he said, “is the drawers that pull back on their own. That’s really nice.” The new farm-style sink also fits the décor of the home, which was built in 1997 by long-time lake developer Jim McKelvey. Russ Johnson said the most challenging part of the three-week renovation was figuring out how to accommodate a beam in the ceiling that separates the kitchen from the dining room. Precise cuts had to be made in the upper parts of the cabinets and moldings. “That took some skill,” he said. Judy Johnson said a few lingering projects need to be wrapped up before the renovation is complete. “We’re still having trouble deciding on a backsplash,” she said. “We also need to refinish the floors and then install the final molding. We’re close.” Graninger described the renovation as one of the more exciting she has coordinated because the Johnsons put so much planning into it. The result is a functional kitchen that better fits with the overall decor of the house. “I think it’s stunning,” she said. “I’m very pleased with it.”

 Before, the Johnsons' kitchen island included the cook top.  The new, granite-topped island is used not only for food preparation, but as a buffet when the couple entertains. 44

ichard and Jason are very straightforward, honest, and fair. They were instrumental in situating our home to maximize our views and give us the largest usable yard possible. The subcontractors they utilize were all highly skilled and professional. They were very accommodating with changes we made as construction progressed, and fair in pricing the changes. I would recommend RJH without hesitation to anyone looking to build a home. Jason Ream (home featured to the left)

Reduce, Reuse, SML author’s first book focuses on how kids can go green Story by Ferne Hale • Photography by Kim Dillon • Artwork courtesy of Julia Marie Floyd

Suzan Tyler Decker’s vision of the main character was clear: A young boy with red hair and freckles, wearing a green striped shirt with jeans and red sneakers. For years, Decker, who moved to Smith Mountain Lake from New Jersey in 1999, talked about writing children’s books on recycling and other green themes but never put pen to paper. "When my children were in elementary school, I used to help out in the classroom by reading stories to groups of children," she said. "By the looks of wonderment and glee on the little ones' faces, I could tell the children were transported to an imaginary world. It was such fun; I enjoyed every minute of it." In August 2008, during a visit to the lake, Decker’s daughter Megan encouraged her mother to act on her passion for writing and storytelling. It was Megan’s words that persuaded Decker to start the book she had dreamed so long of writing.

March • April 2010 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Decker conducted research, formulated the story, commissioned an artist, and in December 2009, selfpublished “Johnny Green and the Little Green Man” through a company called Xlibris. “Children love the unbelievable, and they love to fantasize. I got the idea for Johnny Green as a main character, and I had a vision of exactly how he would look,” Decker said. “… Children identify with kids who are like themselves, and I created Johnny to be very ordinary.” But something extraordinary happens when Johnny encounters a little green man and hides him in his closet, reminiscent of a scene in the movie “E.T.” In the end, Johnny Green learns a valuable lesson – that even children can help the environment by recycling. Decker said that while she believes children establish lifelong habits when they are young, adults can be retrained. She said she hopes the book will leave a lasting impression on readers, resulting in an increase in recycling. The book's final two pages are filled with facts about and tips for recycling glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, tin and aluminum. “The book is geared toward 4-to-8-year-olds ... on up to 100-year-olds,” she said. “You’re never too old to learn to recycle.”

Recycle To illustrate the book, Decker teamed up with Julia Marie Floyd, whose art can be seen at SML venues such as Joe’s Pizza and Italian Restaurant where her intricate murals decorate the walls. In fact, Decker’s commitment to Floyd’s art was part of the reason she decided to self-publish her book. Traditional publishing houses typically have their own artists who create illustrations, she said. Decker wanted control over her vision of Johnny Green. She chose Xlibirs and purchased a mid-range package that would allow the book to be published in both hardcover and paperback. “They also offered a wide range of marketing services,” Decker said. “I liked the fact that they seemed to offer services that get your book exposure on both regional and national levels such as conferences and exhibits around the country.” Decker said she’s optimistic she’ll recoup her investment and plans to use any profit to fund a second book. She has plans for two more in the “Johnny Green” series, one with a focus on clean water and the other on clean air. She said she’s also working on a recycling-related board book for preschool-age children. “My real focus is a fun story that will help better educate children and adults on the importance and value of recycling,” said Decker, a data analyst for Roanoke County Fire and Rescue whose husband, Skip, is manager of Solid Waste and Recycling for the city of Roanoke. In addition to wanting to retain her vision, Decker said she chose not to contact traditional publishing companies for her book because she wanted to retain the rights and because of the horror stories she had heard about the difficult and timeconsuming process. However, Decker said she’s ready to submit future book ideas to traditional publishing companies and joked that she “is working on clearing wall space for the rejection letters.” “Johnny Green and the Little Green Man” ($23.99 in hardcover, $17.99 in paperback) is available online at barnesandnoble.com, amazon.com and at Decker’s Web site, suzantylerdecker.com. The General Store will have signed copies of “Johnny Green and the Little Green Man” available in March. On Earth Day (April 22), Decker will conduct a book reading from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Westlake Library. The author is also available to read the book in classrooms or for groups to stress the importance of recycling. For more information, e-mail her at suzantylerdecker@gmail.com. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Visit Washington when the cherry blossoms are in bloom Story by Lynda Imirie

Washington, D.C. – with its monuments, museums, cathedrals, art galleries and government buildings – is always a worthwhile travel destination. But our nation’s capital, less than a five-hour drive northeast of Smith Mountain Lake, is never more spectacular than in the spring. “No matter where you plan to go, make sure it’s when the cherry blossoms are in bloom,” said SML resident Connie LeMasters. “The trees are breathtaking.” In 1912, the mayor of Tokyo gifted 3,000 Yoshino Cherries to the area to symbolize the friendship between the people of the United States and Japan. Then-First Lady Lady Bird Johnson accepted 3,800 more trees in 1965. The first Cherry Blossom Festival took place in 1927, and in 1994 it was expanded to a two-week celebration with parades, fireworks and other gala events. The festival is carefully planned around the anticipated date for peak bloom, when 70 percent of the blossoms are expected to be open. This year’s events will take place March 27 through April 11. Beyond enjoying the beauty of the blossoms, everyone has his or her own idea of what’s a “must-see” in the nation’s capital. Topping LeMasters’ list of favorites is the Washington Monument, the tallest masonry structure in the world and, at 555 feet, the tallest building in D.C. By law, no building is allowed to be built taller than the tribute to the nation’s first president. Barb Hildreth of Westlake Plantation is equally fond of the Lincoln Memorial. “I remember standing in line for hours when I was a kid,” Hildreth said. “It was and still is very emotional.” Most visitors agree the historical monuments and memorials along the National Mall are noteworthy and impressive, including the U.S. Capitol, the White House, numerous parks and gardens, and memorials to veterans of World War II and the Korean War. Others find the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights originals in the National Archives, similarly moving. “For me, it’s the Pentagon, especially the memorial to the Sept. 11 victims,” said Loa Herbert of Mountain View Shores. The five-sided structure surrounding a five-acre courtyard was built during World War II as an impenetrable fortress for the U.S. Department of Defense. The terrorist attack in 2001 proved otherwise, and a memorial now displays the names of the 125 people killed. The Vietnam Memorial, Memorial to Women in Military Service for America, Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are other sites LeMasters recommended.

SWEET CONTINUED Lake residents Donna and Larry Broomall differ slightly on which of the 19 museums that make up the Smithsonian Institution they enjoy most. Donna was partial to the National Museum of Natural History, setting of the popular “Night at the Museum” movie. Visitors there can view the Hope Diamond, explore the Insect Zoo, enjoy a live butterfly display and stand side by side with the largest bush elephant in the world. Larry said he preferred the National Air and Space Museum with its 23 galleries and historic displays of aviation and space travel. “There’s a second Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport,” he said, referring to the Udvar-Hazy Center. It has aircraft displayed on three levels, including the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet in the world, and the Enterprise space shuttle capsule. Flight simulators and other historic artifacts also are displayed there. “My grandkids love it,” he said. The National Postal Museum, another of the Smithsonian’s, has been enjoyed by Lee Hopkins and husband Don, frequent visitors to the D.C., area. On display there is a colorful overview of America’s history, including the story of the Pony Express, illustrated on stamps. The postal uniform worn by the character of Cliff Clavin on the “Cheers” TV show also is on display. Recently, the Hopkins were particularly moved by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Hopkins described the museum as “brutal, direct and impassioned” and strongly recommended a visit. Among the other sites favored by local residents is the

National Cathedral, with its whimsical stone gargoyles and “space window” containing a piece of lunar rock from the Apollo 11 mission. The sixth-largest in the world, the cathedral is a Christian church but includes interfaith and ecumenical services. There also are musical events, a labyrinth and organ demonstrations. If you’re traveling with children, consider taking them to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). They may already know money doesn’t grow on trees, but they’ll probably be fascinated by the 40-minute tour showing how U.S. currency is designed, engraved and printed. The International Spy Museum is another stop likely to impress tourists of all ages. Visitors start by adopting a cover identity and are subsequently “trained” to recognize disguises. James Bond wannabe’s get to search for hidden cameras, learn about high-tech gadgetry and notorious spy cases with interactive displays in this unusual tribute to espionage. Most visitors choose their own itinerary when touring D.C., but there are some not-so-ordinary guided tours available. DC by Foot includes stories, secrets and information about various national treasures during a stroll through the National Mall. DC by Bus has a “Twilight Monuments” tour on Saturday at 7 p.m. DC Ducks offers a refreshing perspective of the nation’s capitol via a 90-minute tour through the city and into the Potomac River on a World War II amphibious vehicle. For directions to a specific museum or monument, visit the D.C. Department of Tourism Web site at washington.org.

 Washington, D.C., is filled with poignant memorials and impressive buildings, including, Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Capitol; Far right, one of 19 stainless steel statues that comprise the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

The Blackwater Cafe serves up more than just tasty fare Story

and

Blackwater Cafe owner Tom Gordon is so committed to customer service he’s been known to pursue patrons into the parking lot to garner their feedback. Customers are greeted – often by first name – on the way in, thanked on the way out and even walked to their cars under cover of umbrella if it’s raining. So it’s not surprising the Blackwater won the gold award for customer service in the Smith Mountain Laker’s 2010 Best of SML Awards. It’s the second time the restaurant has received the honor, which is voted on by readers. One of the lake’s most established restaurants, the Blackwater won eight other awards, including the top prize for Best Burger, Best Breakfast, Best Desserts, Best Seafood and Best Wine Selection. “Of all the awards, Best Customer Service is the one I cherish most,” said Gordon, who, along with five members of his immediate family, runs the restaurant. “It’s not even a restaurant category. That’s what got us excited the most, that people recognize what we do.” Gordon bought the Blackwater Cafe on Scruggs Road in 2005 and has spent the past four-plus years fine-tuning its staff, menu, atmosphere and special events. Executive Chef Mark Crim, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and multiple awardwinner in the Laker’s Best Chef category, joined the team in 2007. Along with sous chef Cara McClaine, chef Geran Legue and kitchen assistant Nate Flora, Crim creates distinctive meals filled with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Even desserts, which change weekly, are made in-house. “They don’t take shortcuts,” Gordon said of his staff. “They do things the way they’re supposed to be done. They have a strong passion for how food comes out of the kitchen, and that makes everyone else’s job easier.” The Blackwater’s menu is not extensive, which Gordon said “allows us to always put our best foot forward.” Five appetizers range from $4.99 to $8.99. Caesar and mixed-green salads are available and diners can add grilled chicken or shrimp to make either salad an entree. While the half-pound burger ($9.99), 6-ounce grilled beef filet ($24.99) and shrimp and grits ($15.99) are the most popular menu items,

Gordon said the dish patrons comment on most often is the braised beef pot roast ($14.99). “What makes it so good is it has a Bordelaise sauce, which most people aren’t going to make at home because it’s so time-consuming,” Gordon said. “We took it off the menu one summer and had to put it back on because we got so many complaints.” What you won’t see much of on the regular menu is seafood. “We have seafood all the time, but it’s always specials,” Gordon said. “It has to be fresh, and I’m never certain what [type of fresh seafood] will be available. We just don’t do frozen.” The Blackwater features three distinct dining areas. The interior, with its lodge-like decor, is split. A casual bar and grill with big-screen TV occupies one side and a more formal dining room with fireplace the other. Two years ago the owners added a covered outdoor patio, which accommodates 32 people in the warmer months. “It’s just a wonderful ambiance,” said SML resident Charlene Maresca, who dines regularly at the Blackwater with her husband, John. “The food is always delicious. We’ve never been disappointed.” Lynn Gordon, Tom’s wife and the restaurant’s hostess most evenings, decorates for various seasons and holidays throughout the year. John Gordon, the couple’s son, is the restaurant’s general manager. His wife, Miranda, tends bar and helps out on Sundays. The Gordons’ other children, Michael and Susan, also work at the restaurant when things get busy. CONTINUED ON PAGE 86

HOSPITALITY CONTINUED In late 2008, Tom Gordon said he and staff members brainstormed ways to increase business during the slower winter months. They came up with the idea of a gourmet wine dinner, an opportunity for Crim to showcase his culinary skills and Gordon to share his passion for wine. The first one took place that December with select wines paired with each of five courses. “The presentation, and the way the chef and the wine specialists are able to pair the wine and the food, is just excellent,” said Maresca, who attends the dinners regularly with a group of neighbors. “You learn a little something, and it allows for great conversation.” The wine dinners take place the second Tuesday of each month, a night the Blackwater is usually closed. Seating is limited to about 50, which allows the restaurant to retain its cozy atmosphere, Gordon said. Reservations for the dinners, which will continue through May and resume in September, are filled quickly. Their success prompted Gordon to speculate about other events that might appeal to lake residents. In June 2009, the Blackwater held its first jazz dinner. “We filled up a Thursday night that’s not usually very busy,” said Gordon, who booked Roanoke’s Charlie Perkinson Trio. “We offer our normal menu, which people really seem to enjoy. The jazz dinners sell out as well so we plan to continue them year-round.” Gordon said Sunday breakfast/brunch also has been popular. Next up is an “oldies night,” which will feature music from the 1950s and ‘60s. The Gordons own a collection of more than a thousand 45 rpm vinyl records, which can be played on their replica Wurlitzer juke box. The Blackwater Café is located at 4730 Scruggs Road, Moneta. The restaurant serves dinner Wednesday through Saturday starting at 5 p.m. and Sunday breakfast/brunch from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Starting in May, the Blackwater will be open seven days a week for dinner at 5 p.m and Sunday breakfast/brunch from 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. For more information, including complete menus and event schedule, visit theblackwatercafe.com. 540.721.4333

for Saint Patrick’s Story by Gordon Kendall

Green beer long has long associated with gimmicky St. Patrick’s Day antics. This year, try leaving the food coloring in the pantry and celebrating the March 17 holiday with a traditional Irish brew. The most common Irish libation is stout, a form of ale created by top fermenting yeasts that work at relatively warm temperatures. The chief ingredient in stout is malted barley that has been heavily roasted until it is blackened like an espresso coffee bean. Stouts possess a complex array of flavors, including sweet, sour, bitter, roasted and nutty. Although intensely flavorful, stouts are not necessarily high in alcohol content, with most in the 5-percent range. The most well-known stout is Guinness. The company operates breweries around the world, but the pubdraft version available in the United States is crafted in Dublin using the famous local well water. The bottles and cans contain a widget, a tiny plastic bladder packed with nitrogen. When the container is opened, a torrent of nitrogen spews from a tiny hole in the widget, creating a thick, creamy head similar to a bar-drawn pint. Ireland’s County Cork is the home of Murphy’s Irish Stout. It is a bit sweeter and less bitter than Guinness and has been described by some tasters as a distant relative of chocolate milk. In 1854, James J. Murphy and his brothers purchased a hospital that was situated next to a well noted for its highquality water. Murphy began brewing in 1856 and became so successful that he helped bail out a failing bank in 1885. Today, Murphy’s is sold in more than 40 countries around the world. 88

A wee Bit O’Fun

Day A relative newcomer to stout brewing is Ireland’s Carlow Brewing Company, the makers of O’Hara’s Irish Stout. Founded by the O’Hara family in 1996, Carlow utilizes modern technology to brew beers with only natural ingredients. The brewery is located in the Barrow Valley, an area famous for the production of superior barley and hops, the primary beer ingredients (after water). The stout is dark and opaque in color with a thick, cream-colored head. The flavor is rich with roasted, chocolate notes. If these heavily roasted brews sound like too much for you, take a look at Smithwick’s Irish Ale. The ale was originally brewed at the St. Francis Abbey Brewery in Kilkenny, but was purchased by Guinness in 1965. Today, both are owned by beverage giant Diageo. The ale has a reddish-brown color and nice light head. Sweet malt flavors predominate and bitter hop notes are muted. Folks who say they don’t like beer should taste this smooth, mild brew. If your tastes run more along the lines of golden lager-style brews, try Harp Lager. Harp was introduced by the Great Northern Brewery in Dundalk in 1960 in response to the ever-increasing popularity of American lagers. A German brew master was hired to keep the style smooth and clean. Today’s Harp is brewed in Canada and is a bit richer than American lagers, but still crisp and refreshing. Lake residents creating their own Irish celebration can find all of the beers mentioned above (except O'Hara's Irish Stout) plus a few others at the Westlake Kroger.

Several lake-area restaurants will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with special Irish meals, drinks and music. At Jonathan’s Restaurant, chef Chris Mushall plans to serve homemade braised corned beef short ribs paired with kraut and Irish brews on March 17. He will also prepare a pot of Irish stew. When asked if he would use lamb in the stew, Mushall replied, “My mother would kick my behind if I did not!” The Landing will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Party in the bar area on March 13 with drink specials and live entertainment by Tim Martin. On March 17, chef Bruno Silva will prepare several Irish specialties, including Guinness stew and fish and chips. The Blackwater Café will decorate for the occasion and offer special Irish beers on March 17. In addition, chef Mark Crim will offer Shepherd’s Pie, corned beef and cabbage and a seafood medley of oysters, prawns and fish on St. Patrick’s Day. On March 17, Benjamin’s at The Pointe owner Ben McGehee will have several of his family’s traditional Irish recipes on the menu, including corned beef and cabbage, Shepherd’s Pie and Irish Cream Chocolate Mousse Cake. Patrons are encouraged to wear green for the restaurant’s second St. Patrick’s Day Party. Finz Bar & Grille will host a party on March 17 with Irish music, dancing, food and drink specials. There will be Irish beer "and the indoor and outdoor fireplaces will be on," said Rob Arigo, the restaurant’s owner/operator. The owners of the Bluebird Bakery & Grill, who are also of Irish descent, will offer specials throughout the day on March 17, including green eggs and fried tomatoes for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, the menu will include corned beef and cabbage as well as numerous Irish desserts and drink specials. The evening also will include live music by Tom & Dave. The chef at Fallon’s Pub and Grill will be serving up a variety of Irish food on March 17. The bar will also offer drink specials in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Hot Shots Family Fun Center will host a St. Patrick's-themed party on March 13 featuring live music by Dragonfly.

Score big with a March Madness party Story

by

Karen Cromwell

When springtime rolls around there’s no escaping the excitement of March Madness, the time of year when college basketball teams go head-to-head in a battle to become national champions. Conference tournaments, opening rounds, regional action and, of course, the Final Four and national championship game all provide the perfect opportunity to invite sports fans over for a March Madness party. So, get in post position and start planning for an evening of slam-dunk fun.

PICKING A DATE

When it comes to party dates, you have many options. Around Smith Mountain Lake, the ACC Tournament (March 11-14 this year) is generally considered the kickoff for a nearly month-long marathon of basketball-watching. You could also plan your event for Selection Sunday (the day the NCAA Tournament brackets are unveiled) March 14, or one of the subsequent weekends of the tourney. The Final Four semifinal games are April 3 while the national championship game will be played April 5.

INVITATIONS

If you choose to host for the big game on April 5, send out tournament brackets as your party invitations (or separately if sending online invitations). Have each guest fill out a bracket and return to you in advance so you’ll be able to kick off the fun with a basketball pool, tracking progress all the way up until your party date. In addition to predicting the winner of the championship game, each guest should guess what they think the combined final score will be (in case there’s a tie in the pool). Not familiar with all 65 starting teams? Browse the Internet for sites that specialize in March Madness predictions.

DECORATIONS/MUSIC School pennants, balloons and streamers are festive decorations and easy to find in all your favorite team colors. Create your pregame music play list just as if you were at the stadium. Some favorite songs to consider include “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baha Men, “Let’s Get it Started” by Black Eyed Peas and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” 90

March • April 2010 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

ATTIRE

Invite your guests to wear their favorite team colors or jerseys and, as the host, you may want to stand out by wearing an official’s shirt (black and white stripes). Don’t forget a whistle!

JUST FOR FUN

Buy inflatable basketballs or Nerf balls and set up a basketball hoop in the room where guests will be watching the game. Have a small basketball-themed prize for the person who makes the most baskets. If weather permits, head outside between games for a pick-up game. Create a trivia game with questions about the teams playing. For example: What year did Virginia Tech join the ACC? Name a current pro player who used to play for Wake Forest?

FOOD

Keep it simple with traditional stadium-inspired foods such as hot dogs, cheese steak sandwiches, roasted peanuts and nachos. But you’ll also score big with some of your own special game-day recipes such as Buffalo chicken dip and pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw (see recipes on Page 92). For dessert, make a large sheet cake, cut into a large circle and decorate like a basketball with orange and brown frosting. Of course, you’ll want a large cooler filled with a variety of drinks.

BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP

3 tablespoons salt 2 tablespoons pepper 1 tablespoon sweet paprika One 5-pound boneless pork shoulder roast, pulled and shredded 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar 1-1/2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce 8 hamburger buns, split 4 cups coleslaw (recipe below)

1 whole cooked roasted chicken, shredded 4 oz. blue cheese dressing 4 oz. ranch dressing 8 oz. cream cheese 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese Red hot sauce to taste 1 small can of diced jalapeno peppers

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Mix together the salt, pepper and paprika; sprinkle all over the pork and rub in. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the pork and cook, turning occasionally, until browned (8-10 minutes). Transfer to a 24-inch-long sheet of heavy-duty foil and double-wrap the pork. Place the pork, skin side up, in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Roast until tender, about 4 1/2 hours. Remove from the oven and carefully unwrap the top of the pork, revealing the skin. Increase the heat to 450 and roast for 20 minutes more. Transfer the roast to a large bowl, along with any juices. Using two forks, shred the pork. Add the vinegars, sugar and hot sauce. Toss. Serve on the hamburger buns, topped with coleslaw.

Coleslaw 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 green cabbage (about 2-3/4 pounds), cored and shredded In a medium bowl, whisk together the vinegars, sugar, hot sauce, crushed red pepper, salt and pepper. MOJITO GELATIN SHOTS WITH WHITE RUM AND FRESH MINT 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons plus 3/4 teaspoon powdered unflavored gelatin (from 3 envelopes) 1 cup fresh lime juice 1 cup lightly packed mint leaves 1 cup white rum In a small saucepan, cook the water with the sugar over moderate heat until the water is simmering and the sugar dissolves, about 4 minutes. Sprinkle the gelatin over the sugar syrup and whisk constantly over low heat until the gelatin has dissolved, about 1 minute. Put the lime juice and mint leaves in a medium heatproof bowl and pour in the sugar syrup. Let steep for 15 minutes. Stir in the rum. Strain the mojito mixture into a large measuring cup, pressing on the mint leaves with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. Arrange 30 small paper cups on a rimmed baking sheet. Carefully pour the mojito gelatin mixture into the paper cups and refrigerate the shots until they are chilled, about 3 hours. Serve cold. The shots can be covered and refrigerated for up to 3 days. Social Seen | LAKER EVENT

SML

business expo

Don’t mess with a good thing. That’s the position the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce is taking with its seventh annual SML Business Expo, which will take place April 30 from noon to 6 p.m. at Downtown Moneta. “Last year, we had 144 businesses participate and did not have a single complaint,” said Jim Shauberger, the chamber’s special events coordinator. “I’m not going to change a thing. It was such a success in every category.” In 2009, chamber organizers moved the Expo from a field at Downtown Moneta to the paved parking lot of Celebration Station across the street. The result was expanded space, better parking, level booth areas and, with four huge tents, decreased anxiety about the possibility of bad weather. The event, which takes place rain or shine, is free and open to the public. Shauberger estimated a similar number of businesses will be on hand at this year’s event with representatives demonstrating products, answering questions and handing out literature, samples and promotional items. They are not permitted to sell items. One of the most popular exhibits at last year’s Expo was the “Easy Living Cottage” erected on site by Southern Heritage Homes, a Rocky Mount-based builder of custom modular homes. Steady traffic passed through the 512-square-foot cottage throughout the day, said Mike Grisetti, construction supervisor for Southern Heritage Homes.

“The response was phenomenal, better than we could have ever anticipated,” he said. “We tried to demonstrate our capabilities with high-end tile and cabinetry.” Grisetti estimated that last year’s Expo netted four jobs for Southern Heritage Homes. “We still have people calling and asking about [the cottage],” he said. “The overall branding of it was a huge success.” Shauberger agreed the Expo is a great opportunity for the SML community to see what companies at and around the lake have to offer. “Sometimes it’s a surprise for people to see what all is available locally,” he said. Those attending the Expo can also register for door prizes, which are donated by area businesses and awarded throughout the day. A food tent will be set up with hot dogs, chips and drinks available for purchase. Courtesy golf carts will also be available to shuttle people from parking areas at Mayberry Hills and Bethlehem United Methodist Church. For more information on participating in or volunteering for the Expo, contact Jim Shauberger at 540.721.1203 or log on to visitsmithmountainlake.com. For expanded coverage of the event, pick up a copy of the April 30 Laker Weekly.

blue ridge

brawl

The area’s avid anglers as well as other Lakers who enjoy an occasional glimpse of pros on the Bassmaster Elite Series are in for a treat when the Blue Ridge Brawl Tournament makes its third appearance at Smith Mountain Lake April 15-18. The event is the third of the eight-event series, which is open to 95 professionals whose prowess with rod and reel has earned them a position in the competitive field. “I’m really excited about fishing another important tournament so close to home,” said Salem-based John Crews, who qualified for the event. “It is absolutely awesome to have the vast majority of the crowd screaming for you when you go on stage. There’s no feeling like it.” Spectators will be able to watch the launches (7 a.m.) and weigh-ins (3-4 p.m.) Thursday through Sunday from the fanfriendly grounds of Parkway Marina on the Bedford side of the lake. Organizers are also hoping to bring back the Dock Dogs jumping contest that was popular in 2007. Franklin County Tourism/Special Events Manager Debra Weir has been working closely with representatives of tournament-organizer BASS and Bedford County officials to plan the event. “BASS likes coming to SML in part because there is such great support from both Franklin and Bedford counties,” Weir said. Qualifying to fish the Elite Series is a potentially profitable accomplishment for bass-fishing pros. Each of the eight tournaments offers a $640,000 purse, with $100,000 going to the top finisher. At the end of the season, another $750,000 is distributed based on cumulative Angler of the Year results. Entry fee for each event is $5,300.

Last year, BASS instituted a Marshal Program, an aspect that makes the sport more engaging for tournament followers, Weir said. “It allows one lucky spectator to ride along with each pro, observe the action and transmit live updates to tournament headquarters,” she said. “These spots in the boats are highly sought after, and BASS has a long waiting list for the SML event. Our committee was given two marshal positions, which we raffled off to local fans.” The event also has a major economic impact on the lake from tournament participants and their families, officials and fans visiting the area. “The amount spent on food and lodging is significant,” Weir said, “and there’s gas and gear for the anglers, many of whom get here days early to pre-fish the lake. Some have made scouting trips earlier in the season. And spectators patronize local businesses as well. We anticipate upwards of $1 million of economic benefit by the time it’s over.” A few weeks after the event, sports network ESPN broadcasts tournament coverage, adding to the economic impact and overall national exposure for SML. “We know BASS will have good things to say about Franklin and Bedford counties as fishing and vacation destinations,” Weir said. “That’s bound to increase tourism in the long run.” Crews agreed: “Smith Mountain Lake is beautiful, the people are nice, and it has a bunch of fish in it. It is a great showcase for what Virginia has to offer in outdoor recreation.”

Social Seen | LAKER EVENT

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE

TRIATHLON Athletes who compete regularly in triathlons have to be exceptionally fit. Those who plan to compete in this year's Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon need to be exceptionally hardy as well. The event takes place the first Saturday in May each year when water temperatures are typically in the mid-60s. With Southwest Virginia’s bitterly cold winter, the lake likely will be considerably chillier come May 1. “One more week would have made a difference, especially as cold as this winter has been,” said Peter Lampman, president of Virginia Amateur Sports, which organizes the event. Still, Lampman said he expects approximately 550 athletes to converge on Smith Mountain Lake State Park for the competition, which is comprised of a 750-meter swim, 12-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. Participants can compete individually or as part of a relay team. In addition to overall prizes for men and women, athletes are recognized in several age and weight categories. Lampman said becoming part of the Virginia Triathlon Series, which is comprised of 21 events throughout the state, has

contributed to the growth in participation for the SML event. “We’ve also seen a lot of growth from people outside the state,” Lampman said, noting that only 144 athletes competed in the SML Triathlon 13 years ago. “We’ve had 10, 15, 20 states represented at different times over the years.” For those who sign up before April 1, the cost to compete in the event is $65 for an individual and $110 for a relay team. The price goes up to $70 for an individual and $120 for a team for athletes who register April 2-28. Participants may register on race day. Fees are $75 for an individual and $130 for a relay team. In addition, a $10 fee applies to all athletes who are not members of USA Triathlon. Race-day registration runs from 7 to 8:15 a.m. It will be followed by a mandatory pre-race meeting at 8:45.; the triathlon start at 9. For more information on competing in or volunteering for the SML Triathlon, visit commonwealthgames.org/smltriathlon.htm or call Virginia Amateur Sports at 540.343.0987.

SPRING LAKE OUTDOOR CLUB

There’s no denying the tranquil beauty of Smith Mountain Lake. However, on warm weekends, the lake can get chaotic. Sometimes, when the peaceful sound of birds chirping and fish jumping is replaced by the roar of boat engines, it’s nice to get away. That’s why some Lakers escape to a nearby hidden jewel – Spring Lake Farm, located 10 minutes from Hales Ford Bridge. The farm is home to the Spring Lake Outdoor Club, which provides family friendly adventure in a safe environment at a bargain price. Property owner David Merritt started the club in 1996 after having frequent visitors come down his driveway wanting to fish the 16-acre lake. To maintain control over the property, he formed the Spring Lake Fish Club. Members could pay annual dues plus a small per-use fee to access the 45-acre property, which includes the lake and surrounding farm. The group became known as Spring Lake Outdoor Club in 2006 when Merritt added a 3-D archery range along a trail that circles the lake. The trail features life-size rubber animal targets such as bears, caribou and alligators. The value and family atmosphere are the most important aspects of the club, Merritt said. Yearly dues are $125, which covers one household. An additional $5 fee is charged for each use of the property, which Merritt said offsets upkeep costs for docks, boats and the archery trail. "It’s a terrific value because everyone living under your roof can use it," Merritt said. "Dads who want to take their kids fishing can play outside with them in a wholesome environment. We’re blessed to own this property, and we feel obligated to share it." Membership includes access to the lake, archery trail and farm. Members can use the boathouse, john boats, canoes and other equipment provided by club fees. "We have parties, we hold a big barbecue, we grow blackberries for our members to pick," Merritt said. "Sometimes we even have

people bring their horses out to ride on the trail." Merritt said members rave about the fishing, too. "We have bass, bluegills, citation crappy, and easily the best fly fishing in Bedford County," he said. "Plus, it’s the quiet lake. I know people that live and play at SML but come here for a quiet visit." The club also gives back to the community by organizing tournaments to benefit area non-profit organizations, including Hunters for the Hungry and the Ronald McDonald House of Roanoke. Merritt said he also has plans to organize week-long fishing and bowhunting day camps for youth. Spring Lake Farm is located at 1051 Spring Lake Farm Road, one-half mile from Staunton River High School in Moneta. For more information about the club, call Merritt at 540.598.9907 or visit shootarchery.com and click Spring Lake.
