Ireland Karen and Harry Simmerman of Hardy celebrated Harry’s retirement by taking a trip to Ireland in April. It was a family adventure with daughter Kara, son Eric, daughter-in-law Isabel, and granddaughters Victoria and Ana enjoying the beauty of the Emerald Isle. “Highlights of the trip,” they said, “included visiting the beautiful and charming seaport towns of Dingle, Doolin and Kinsale, kissing ‘the Stone’ and sleeping for three nights in a castle.”
Florida Brett Sampson and his girlfriend, Kendall Bowman, took the July/August 2014 issue of Laker with them on their sunny vacation to Palm Beach Island. “We loved the trip,” Sampson said, “but not as much as the many lake trips to my family lake house in Huddleston. There is no place like SML.”
Caribbean Jimmy and Donna Beard of Hardy brought the March/April issue of Laker magazine with them as they enjoyed a cruise vacation to the Caribbean. The photo was taken at their final stop in Nassau, after visiting Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and Antigua.
Indiana Greg Dillon and his wife, Ginger, traveled with Laker magazine in April to Michigan City, Indiana. They took the trip to celebrate the wedding of their niece and to visit family in the area. The local event raised money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Dwayne and Jeanette Gibson took a cruise out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and brought the March/April Laker magazine with them. “We were celebrating our 30th anniversary,” they said. This photo is taken at Cabana Beach in Curacao, one of four islands that they visited. “Each island we enjoyed riding on a catamaran, sailboat or ferry to other smaller islands or snorkeling sites. Everywhere we went we spoke of ‘our lake’ back home,” they said.

f you’ve been cruising on the Blackwater River arm of the lake in the past few years, you no doubt saw a home being constructed in South Harbour, the former campground in Scruggs just upriver from the Crazy Horse cove. The home itself took two and a half years to build, though counting the dock construction and time spent drawing up plans, the project took five years. Located on a gently sloping lot — the owners also hold the lots on each side of the home, making for an extensive shoreline appropriate to the size of the structure — the home is one of the most unique to be found on the lake. Not only is it big, bold and beautiful, it has turrets, massive pillars, a 22-foot-tall entryway, sliding glass doors 6 feet wide and 11.5 feet tall, a pool that appears to flow directly into the lake, spa, sweeping views and much more. The good news is that you can get inside to visit this and seven other homes on the lake during the 2015 Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 9, 10 and 11. At the entrance, there are four massive tree-
like outdoor pillars, only to be dwarfed by the extra tall front doors. Inside, the large entryway is oval shaped and has a customcrafted elliptical chandelier that can be lowered with the flick of a switch for cleaning or decorating. And this room is tall — two stories tall. A neck-craning floor to ceiling shelf unit in dark alder wood shows off interesting items, and there’s a plethora of art on the walls. There’s even a stuffed peacock on the wall above the lower steps of the circular stairway. Owners Jim and Debbie Petrine offered warm greetings and were eager to talk about the construction of the home. Jim, a civil engineer, builder and developer of the lake’s Waterpointe, Sandy Point, Bel Lago and The Windward subdivisions, grew up in Hampton, Virginia and, according to Debbie, “always wanted to get back to living on the water, so this is fulfilling a dream for him.” “We had pictures of things we wanted in this SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

house,” she said, “and [architect] John Fulton helped us achieve what we envisioned. We wanted it to look like something you’d see in the British Virgin Islands with simple, clean lines and dark wood on the kitchen cabinets and all the doors in the house.” Debbie said, “Jim and I agreed at the beginning that I could have one thing in the house that he couldn’t veto.” What did she select? “I chose the stair and balcony railing,” Debbie said. “Everyone wanted me to select wood or wrought iron, but I wanted brown metal. items with decorator Vera Silcox. When Silcox found something really special, she’d start singing “happy birthday to you” to clue Debbie that it might require some lobbying with Jim. Another happy birthday moment came when Debbie realized the house might seem cold because it was so tall and open. “I like cozy,” she said. “Then Vera suggested we put a wood surface and beams on the ceiling. That really warmed up the look of the house.” The resulting ceiling has cedar lap siding treated in a four-step process to make it look old. Jim, not pleased by the extra work a wooden ceiling would require, heard the “Happy Birthday” song again and agreed to the change. “It was just the right touch,” Jim admitted. In this room, there’s also an indoor garden with a Norfolk Island pine that is more than 25 years old. “It was a little bitty thing with a bow on it that I bought at Kroger,” Debbie said. There are huge bi-fold glass doors to the dining room, which can close off the house when 4-footby-11.5-foot patio doors are slid open to create a huge indoor-outdoor space with easy access to the pool deck kitchen. This room has the same flooring as the outdoor patio for a seamless indoor-outdoor look. A massive rustic dining table and chairs add to the outdoor feel of the room. There is one guest bedroom and bath on this main level, plus the master suite in a turret on the opposite end. En route to the master suite is the kitchen — totally open to the great room and sporting a beautiful onyx bar counter that is lit
from below. Farther along is a seating area with a unique cozy bar table made from the trunk of an Osage Orange tree. An elevator and stairway (remember the birthday railing?) leads to the second floor with two guest bedrooms, one with a twig bed, and baths, and an office with a Murphy bed built in to look like a closet. harity Home Tour visitors who arrive at the Petrine home by boat will notice a rather remarkable vessel bobbing in the dock’s custom-built “raised roof” slip. Those who visit the property by car will want to amble down the nearly-level path to the dock and check the boat out as well. The 38-foot Aquila ocean-capable catamaran, which Debbie Petrine jokingly refers to as “Jim’s mistress,” is actually named Enirtep after Jim’s construction business — and it’s the reverse spelling of the couple’s last name. Jim fell in love with the Aquila’s performance and accommodations while bareboat chartering a 48-footer in the Virgin Islands. “Aquilas are the most popular power-cruiser rental there,” he said, “with over a hundred of them available.”

“It has a huge bridge deck,” Jim continued, “big enough for everyone aboard to come up top and enjoy the great views SML offers. The skipper gets to be part of the socializing while running the boat, whereas many cruising boat layouts tend to isolate the operator from family and guests.” Jim said that conversation up there is easy since the twin 180-horsepower diesel inboards are buried deep in the catamaran hulls, well aft of and below the roomy salon, which houses a bed-convertible dining table, ample galley countertop, fridge and freezer, microwave, chart table and electrical system monitoring panel. Light streams in from all sides, and ventilation is outstanding, including forward-facing louvered windows that open to channel breezes through the space while underway. The roomy bridge deck is reached via an easy-to-

negotiate stairway from the aft deck; another wide set of steps leads forward to a large flat lounging area on the deck that connects the hulls forward. A “fridge on the bridge” saves making trips below for chilled beverages. “The forward deck has high rails and feels safe and secure,” Jim noted. “People love riding and sunbathing there. And it was the most popular spot when we had 18 out to view the July 4th fireworks.” A suite with a 52-inch double bed, shower and head is tucked into each hull forward of the engines, accessible via three steps on either side of the salon. Large portholes provide ample light and a view outside. “Enirtep” was built in China, came to Norfolk on the deck of a ship, and then had to have its radar arch and upper deck removed for bridge clearances on the way to SML in August 2013.
“Fortunately our purchase agreement specified, ‘Delivered and ready to cruise,’” Jim reflected. “The road travel was more complex than anyone had anticipated.” Jim also had the foresight to fill the boat’s tanks with 250 gallons of diesel along the way, since no diesel fuel is sold at SML marinas. “The engines are ‘sippers,’” he said. “So we’re still running on that initial fill. Soon, though, I’ll need to have a truck come and refill the tanks.” The Petrines’ dock is also home to three personal watercraft: a jet-powered sport boat, a 24-foot Sea Ray runabout that Jim occasionally takes to work near Hales Ford Bridge and an assortment of paddle craft. “The toys help get the kids back to visit more often,” Jim noted dryly.

A home away from
A 5,000-square-foot dock on Hawk’s Nest Point is an inviting destination for the Hornes to entertain.
L
arry and Joyce Horne’s dock is home to a 30-foot Hunter sailboat, a 23-foot runabout and a Sea-Doo, but it feels more like a real home over the water. There is a sitting area around a propane-powered fire table, a kitchen with cherry cabinets, a microwave, convection oven, refrigerator, popcorn machine and a bar; five tables, each with seating for six to 10 people; and a cute and spacious gazebo. This almost 5,000-square-foot dock is located in a protected cove, part of the Hornes’ 2,500-feet of shoreline on Hawk’s Nest Point in Huddleston, on the western-most branch of Witcher Creek, near Smith Mountain Dam. “We have a penchant for entertaining,” said Joyce, who reeled off a list of parties they’ve hosted on the dock. “Our wine club [80 members] has gathered here a couple of times. There’ve been numerous family reunions and birthday parties. We’ve hosted high school class reunions — 75 people at the most recent one [Larry and Joyce were sweethearts at Bedford High School]. And we just like to enjoy this bit of paradise with others.” More remarkable than the size of the dock is the fact that, after having a dock builder drive the pilings and install the banding and roof trusses, Larry built the dock himself in just two years. The gazebo, pilings for which were also driven in 2001, took Larry and his son an additional two summers of weekends to complete. It’s important to note what the dock does not have: running water — no sink, no shower and certainly no
toilet. Guests must take the path up to the Hornes’ home for those amenities. They bought their lot around Christmas in 1995, took about a year for the design and spent about two years on house-building. Larry acted as his own general contractor with consulting advice from builder John Brock, and the house was finished in February 2000. While designing the dock and house, Larry built a model of each structure. Though his University of Virginia degrees were in electrical engineering and finance, his hobby is woodworking, and there are many examples of his handiwork on the dock: the kitchen bar with tile surfacing, unobtrusive wedding cake-like dock steps (Larry’s invention), soaring gazebo arches, clever attachments for hanging furniture and decorations. This dock is decorated to the hilt. There are drapes, two working fountains, six huge pots of ferns, hanging flower pots, four large clematis plants, a Hawk’s Nest Point bench that Larry made, real crab and lobster traps, decorative old water skis (“I skied on them from Hales Ford Bridge to the dam in the early years,” Larry proudly recalled), and even chandeliers over two of the tables. All the many plants are on an automatic watering system, and they seem as happy as their owners who don’t have to bother with that chore.

The images, which depict scenes stretching from the Chesapeake Bay to Bedford County and north to the University of Virginia, were part of a cohesive vision.
An outstanding feature is the rope furniture from Nags Head Hammocks: two bar stools, two chairs and a double and a single swing — each with a footrest. In 1982 Joyce and Larry bought their first piece, a hammock, from this company and loved the comfort and style so much they bought several more of its rope creations. The couple’s artistry took hold in the gazebo. “I love Jefferson’s concept of eight-sided things,” said Larry, and that’s the shape he chose for the gazebo. Once it was built, Joyce decided it cried to become her “canvas.” “What can I paint on eight panels that is cohesive?” Joyce wondered. She decided the paintings would be all about Virginia. “Number one panel is on the eastern facet, so it shows the Chesapeake Bay to the east of us,” she said. “The second panel features Assateague Light, and the third panel depicts UVa, farther inland. The fourth represents Poplar Forest in Bedford County. The fifth shows the town of Bedford, with the Peaks of Otter in the distance — I grew up with that view of the Peaks. The next panel has the D-Day Memorial — I lost an uncle in the D-Day invasion. in the foreground, complete with eagle’s nest. Panel seven highlights Virginia agriculture: a cotton field, peanut silo, tobacco barn and field. The last panel completes the circle back to the coast, showing the Tidewater with old Point Comfort Lighthouse.” Joyce did a lot of planning and sketching before the actual painting began. Each image is captured on half of a 4-foot-by-8-foot sheet of plywood. First she applied a Gesso primer, then used acrylic paint for color and added acrylic sealer for protections from the weather. Each painting was done up at the house then hung inside one the gazebo’s eight facets. Two tall propane heaters extend the season for enjoying the gazebo’s homey atmosphere and spectacular views. As with many home projects, the work is never quite finished. Larry is currently adding a ceiling to the living/entertaining area of the dock, and he wants to put a floor in the dock attic for more storage, accessible via a spiral stairway. The Hornes’ younger son and his family, who live at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, visit once a year to enjoy SML. Whether Larry and Joyce are having a waffle breakfast on the dock with their older son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, 18, and 15-year old twin grandsons, or entertaining a huge crowd, they are enjoying their outdoor living space over the water and all the fun it affords.

No matter how the Trettners’ house is approached, the Lovely Laker Landscape Contest winners have beauty on display.

hether approached from land or by lake, George and Rita Trettner’s garden is a winner. Annual color is the garden’s hallmark, with trees and shrubs providing the bone structure. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the Trettners to realize their vision of paradise. They initially hired Dan Chitwood, a landscape architect based in Salem, to draw up a master plan for the garden at their home in Hardy. They were delighted with the plan and employed a landscaper connected to a now-defunct nursery to make it a reality. The landscaper, who had been recommended to them by their builder, was pushy and headstrong, they said. He chose to ignore Chitwood’s plan, instead planting whatever he saw fit. Not wanting to make waves, the Trettners gave him a free hand.

Since then they have learned that planting a buffer garden along the shoreline is important for the lake health and water quality as the plant roots soak up the lawn fertilizer before it runs into the water.
“I wasn’t very happy about it,” said Rita, who is a passionate gardener. The result was far too many plants that quickly outgrew their space. “He doubled the number of plants we needed,” said Rita, adding that the nursery made more money by selling the extra plants. “George took most of them out. He’d move some to other locations when he could, but most he threw out. He worked very hard undoing the damage done by that man,” she said. Today visitors coming to the front door are treated to beds filled with colorful annuals and perennials. A border of low-growing pink wax begonias edges the beds, acting as an attractive color foil to the lavender and pale orange dahlias, golden creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia “Aurea”), and a Japanese maple. In pots, a pair of dwarf blue spruces trained as standards flank the front entry. From the lake, the dock catches the eye with hanging baskets filled with blazing red dragon wing 42 September • October 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Large tubs filled with upright red geraniums (Pelorgonium) and the cascading chartreuse leafed “Marguerite” sweet potato vines provide color on the decking, while a combination of red and white flowering mandevilla vines add height to the outside corner. A lush lawn sweeps down the slope toward the water, stopping just before it reaches the riprap. Along the shore is a single row of shrubs, each carefully pruned to create a pattern and rhythm of shapes and sizes. On each end are boxwoods pruned in a sugarloaf shape. Next to them moving toward the center are Japanese cedars (Cryptomeria), dwarf blue spruce (Picea pungens), dwarf hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), yellow leaf barberry and a final dwarf blue spruce in the center. That row of shrubs along the waterfront was an important step in the Trettner’s landscaping journey. The inspiration came from another property. “We were on the water and went by a house with plantings along the shore,” Rita explained. “I

a win-win decision, good for the garden design and good for the lake. Before coming to Smith Mountain Lake, the Trettners lived in Long Island, New York, where George and Rita raised their five children. George worked as a police sergeant and, once the children were older, Rita as a personal trainer. While patrolling his beat in the late 1980s, George SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

came across a store that had been robbed. He called the owner, and in the course of the conversation, the owner mentioned that the most beautiful place he had ever been was Smith Mountain Lake. George took note, and shortly afterward came to the lake to check it out. That weekend he made an offer on two adjoining lots on the Roanoke River arm of the lake, near channel marker R-39. Although George retired in 1992, they didn’t move to the lake until six years later when all the children had finished school. They rented a house near the lot, and began construction on their retirement home. They were finally able to move into the finished house in December 2000. “I thought we’d never move in,” commented Rita. The garden is a team effort. Rita keeps George busy planting the trees, shrubs and perennials as well as the scores of annuals Rita brings in each spring. He also prunes and looks after the lawn. Rita cares for the plants, keeping a logbook of when she’s watered, fertilized or done other maintenance. Their efforts provide enormous pleasure both to themselves and to all who pass by. As winners of this year’s annual Lovely Laker Landscape Contest, the Trettners will receive a gift certificate for $1,000 in merchandise from Lakescapes Nursery in Union Hall. 44 September • October 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

enise Tuttle, executive chair of the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, delves into the heart of the tour’s success and why it is thriving into its silver anniversary. “The home tour brings together so many different elements of our community: sponsors, volunteers, businesses, charities and homeowners. It gets everyone involved,” she said. For those involved in the tour, past and present, “community” is the common thread. The all-volunteer event channels the hard work of lake-area residents and uses the proceeds to improve the community. The goal echoed by this year’s Charity Home Tour leadership is “doing good.” From its beginnings in 1991, the home tour has been helping people in need. To date, more than $3.8 million has been given to local charity operations. Jeanne Wagoner, who has a background in special-event fundraising, founded the event while she was building a home at Smith Mountain Lake. As a Charlottesville resident, she was serving on the board of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and was involved in the organization’s fundraising arm. The group asked her to raise money at the lake. Wagoner’s question to herself was, “How?” As Wagoner and her late husband, Joe, were building their house, several people came by to see what they were doing. Likewise, the Wagoners would take their car or boat around the lake to see some of the other construction. “That’s how the idea came to me that we need to have a home tour, where people could go by land or by water,” Wagoner said. The first year laid the groundwork for much of what was to come. There has always been a focus on finding home characteristics that are unique at the lake. Joe Wagoner was the first to hunt for sponsorships, though in 1991, the couple didn’t come up with the idea until just before the tour weekend. Since then, sponsorships have grown into the primary source of revenue for the event. The first several years, the tour consisted of 10 homes; it was later trimmed to eight. In the early 1990s, Wagoner said, there weren’t a lot of big houses on the lake. But soon after the tour began, development surged, especially on the Franklin County side of the lake. Wagoner, who has had her own home on the tour, said, “In the end, the homeowners find it to be so gratifying, that you have showed your house to help those among us who don’t have so much.”

In addition to being the founder, Wagoner served as executive chair during the tour’s first few years, when it was called the MS Home Tour. In 1997, the tour became incorporated and changed its name, and she served as president and later as board chair. She said that the Charity Home Tour had a tough go of things about six years ago and was even in jeopardy of closing its doors. An ad hoc committee was formed, and there was a unified push to keep the tour going.

The changes that were discussed then led to the installment of new leaders who brought fresh energy to the organization. They are what led to Denise Tuttle, who was recruited in the fall of 2010 and served as secretary, vice president for services, chair of home administration and now executive chair. “Denise is good about bringing in new people,” Wagoner said, “and that’s what the ad hoc committee found. We needed to look outside the box, to bring in new leadership, people who have new vision. We needed to look at new ideas, and I think that’s what reinvigorated the home tour.” “That was kind of a pivotal year because in 2008, ’09 and ’10, the economy wasn’t good,” Tuttle said. “While the tour had been really strong in the early 2000s, it was starting to experience, like everything else around, some difficulty.” And, she notes, it prevailed. The home tour is stronger than ever. The community stepped up to rededicate itself to the Charity Home Tour’s wellrooted mission. “One of the things I see that is so terrific about the Smith Mountain Lake area is that many of us are retired, and we’ve retired from different places,” Tuttle said. “We have this wonderful life, but just an arm’s reach away from us, all around us, there’s poverty, there’s hardship, there are people who are not doing well. So what this community has done from the very beginning, when Jeanne Wagoner started it and her group with her, they went out to

Recipient groups are representative of the immediate lake area as well as Rocky Mount, Bedford, Lynchburg and the Roanoke Valley. Though not among this year’s beneficiaries, Lake Christian Ministries had frequently been a recipient of money from the event. “What we gain from it is not only the money aspect but also the camaraderie of being in it,” said Laurie Clements, who served as chief hostess for the Lake Christian Ministries houses for several years. “It’s always so much of a neighborhood camaraderie. It gets the whole community involved, so it gets our name out there.” The amount of community giving has grown substantially from the early days 25 years ago. This year, the goal is $200,000 in ticket and sponsorship revenue. Last year Vince Phelps of VC Design & Build Inc. was the royal sponsor with a $10,000 donation. This year, he doubled that and became the presenting sponsor with a $20,000 gift. doing for the community. I don’t hear you talking about yourselves; I hear you talking about what everyone does for the community.’” This year, the home tour has had an anonymous donation of $20,000 from an individual, and it features scores of companies among the diamond, gold, silver and bronze sponsorship levels. The home tour leaders work hard to keep businesses and individuals engaged and the vision fresh. Technology has been key: the event’s website was overhauled last year, e-tickets have been made available for 2015, and there’s a stronger emphasis on social media. The organization also overhauled its official guide in 2014 and updated its donor database. All of which leads to the heartfelt and emotional day each November when the eight recipient charities are presented with their share of the proceeds. A representative from each charity talks about how the donated money will be spent. “It’s just wonderful to hear that, to hear the impact that the money is going to have,” said Carla Laseter, head of public relations for the tour. At the check presentation, Tuttle said, “It’s hard to leave there without a tear in your eye. We say to ourselves, this is why we do what we do.”

The Charity Home Tour had used balloons in the past to mark docks, but nowadays, tall orange event flags are used.
I
t’s that “perfect boating” time of year again. The heavy summer traffic is behind us. The sun is less intense. The haze that clouds our views of mountains in the distance is gone. There are hints of color in the early-turning trees. And while any fall excursion under these conditions can be magical, the annual Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour presents one of each year’s best opportunities for an unforgettable outing on the lake. It’s also an opportunity to get an insider’s look at eight lake homes — their entryways, kitchens, dining areas, master suites, guest rooms, media and game rooms, workshops, porches. All of which are skillfully accented with decorating, furnishings, collections, landscaping, docks, decks and other unique features. Ticket purchasers also help raise funds for the eight charities whose volunteers and supporters will be welcoming visitors to this year’s tour of homes. Of course, all the homes can be reached by car.

With ample free parking at each location and orange “arrow” signs along the roadways, many lakers find driving to at least some of the homes quite convenient. But if the weather cooperates, visiting as many homes by water as possible takes advantage of one of the Charity Home Tour’s key aspects: Every home has a dock to welcome boatloads of visitors who opt to make their tour a boating outing as well. Boaters are encouraged to make a few simple preparations for their home tour cruise. Be sure to take along a charged cellphone. Get out a properly fitting life vest for each crew member (best practice is to wear personal flotation devices while underway, but at the very least they should be on deck where they are readily accessible). Top off your fuel tank: one of Sea Tow SML’s most frequent calls is from stranded boaters who have run out of gas despite a (malfunctioning) fuel gauge that reads half full. Take along a lake map and plan the route in advance.

Washington Highway) just south of Hales Ford Bridge, but other starting points may be used, and the homes may be visited in any order. There will be traffic directors at each home to assist you; notify them if any passengers need assistance (homes are not wheelchair accessible). The Smith Mountain Lake Water Safety Council recommends that all people aboard your vessel wear life jackets. At the very least, a properly-sized jacket for each occupant should be on deck (rather than stowed away in a compartment) for easy access. Dock only at docks marked with a tall orange banner and attended by home tour volunteers. Homes are listed in a logical by-water sequence, but retain their by-land numbers from the tour brochure and official guide. GPS readings are approximate. Time estimates for each segment reflect smooth water and minimal traffic. Allow extra time to wait for docking space, especially on Saturday. Beginning at Hales Ford Bridge at or near the entrance to Bridgewater Marina:

Head back downstream following main channel markers, passing under the Hales Ford Bridge and through the “S-curve” (begins near R-21A), taking care as this is a congested area. Exit the “S-curve” by rounding R-17 and heading into the cove with the Smith Mountain Lake Community Park beach on the righthand shore. Snyder home is directly ahead, the first to the left of the community
park causeway. (25 to 30 minutes, GPS 37’ 05.396N; 79’ 37.366W)
8. Grant Home, 48 Watch Hill Circle (The Boardwalk), Moneta
Exit cove heading downstream on a southwest heading, angling past R-15 at the island off Park Place and into The Boardwalk’s upper cove, keeping two shoal markers to your left. Home (cream-colored with white trim) will be on left, about halfway into the cove. (5 minutes, GPS 37’ 04.270N; 79’ 37.735W)

Exit the cove around The Boardwalk shoal markers to head down river. Keep Carter Island and the fixed shoal marker below it well to your left; then angle left across channel toward the smaller island, keeping it to your left

as well. Point toward the twin cell towers atop the right side of Smith Mountain’s gap; then bear left toward the single tower on the other side of the “V.” House stands alone on a relatively flat point, just to the right of Sportsman Marina. (10 minutes, GPS 37’ 03.545N; 79’ 34.983W)
2. Chadason Home, 1122 Crows Nest Drive, Huddleston
Head toward the main channel, following the lefthand shore. Pass a large beige house on left, with a flagpole on its point. The Chadason home is just in the cove beyond, with a dock to left side of the lot as you approach. (3 minutes, GPS 73’ 03.330N; 79’ 35.139W)
3. Berdine Home, 105 Arbor Lane, Huddleston
Head to the main channel, passing R-8 and pointing toward the right side of Smith
Mountain’s “V” (Parkway Marina carousel’s octagonal enclosure will be on the point to your left). Most boats can safely idle through the middle of the shoal markers between Beach Island and Middle Island (largest of three) on your left (shallow point is about 6 feet during high water). Note: Should the water be low, a safer course into Craddock Creek is to pass R-6, then cut between Middle and Bride’s (the smallest) islands. C1 and its shoal markers will be to your right. Then bear 90 degrees left, pointing northwest toward the yellow house in the cove with large lawn in front. (10 to 15 minutes depending on your route, GPS 37’ 03.089N; 79’ 34.622W)
7. Laseter Home, 91 Harbour Court (Waverly), Moneta Return the way you came. Once through the islands
and into the big bay of the Roanoke, steer southwest toward the Blackwater River, keeping Vista Pointe condos and, a bit farther on, marker B-1 to your left. Round B-2, B-4 and B-6 and head up the Blackwater, passing B-10 on your right. Cut inside Chimney Island off Waverly, leaving it to port and rounding the point with large willows. Follow the right-hand shoreline and look for the orange banner on the Laseter dock, the second
to last dock on the far left. (20 to 25 minutes, GPS 37’ 03.497N; 79’ 38.451W)
6. Petrine Home, 106 Harbour Island Lane (South Harbour), Moneta
Head up river (not into Crazy Horse Marina cove) along the main channel’s right shore. After the next point, the Petrine home will be at your 2 o’clock. There’s a shoal marker off the point, and you must approach the dock from downstream of
that marker (traveling east to west) to avoid shallow water. Skippers coming downriver from farther up the Blackwater must be sure to pass the shoal marker and circle back. (2 minutes, GPS 37’ 03.243N; 79’ 39.550W) Return to your starting point as appropriate, keeping to the right side of the channels as practical. (A direct run back to the Bridge will take 45 to 50 minutes.)

Sitting on a flat point with 800 feet of shoreline, the one-year-old Adams home is a mix of colonial style with craftsman pillars. Its lovely blue color is accented with bright white trim. A two-story stone fireplace dominates the great room, which flows to the kitchen and dining area — all of which have hickory flooring. The main floor master suite has a clever closet-to-laundry room pass-through designed by the homeowner. Three guest rooms are upstairs, with two baths and a sitting area with horse memorabilia adorning the walls. A telescope aids in tracking eagles, osprey, loons and waterfowl. A lakeside covered deck connects to a screened porch off the kitchen. The lake level has a family room with bar, one additional guest suite and a covered patio.

The Chadason home, a blend of rustic farmhouse charm and modern lines with arts and crafts details such as perimeter windows, is welcoming and comfortable. The style is clean and uncluttered with impact from architectural aspects: soaring ceilings (18-feet high in the great room) chunky wood beams, stone fireplaces, an additional stone wall and distressed wood flooring. A unique barn door conceals the kitchen's pantry. Adding personality and color throughout are rugs and artifacts from India, Afganistan, Nepal, Tunisia, Greece and Italy acquired during 27 years of living overseas. The Berdine home on Craddock Creek has a spectacular mountain view. During remodeling, the home was stripped down to its footprint, the roof and the studs. “You could see right through the house,” Randy Berdine said. Everything was rearranged to include an open floor plan, gourmet kitchen, sunroom and three bedrooms. Other changes to the home included larger windows and doors, pet-friendly hand-scraped floors, new decking and glass railings. A new dock was built, and a new garage with a full basement providing lots of storage space was built. A gurgling waterfall spills down through a series of ponds on the lake side of the home.

Above the bridge, the Wetter-Sayre home exemplifies how a weekend lake house can be transformed to a modern open concept home perfect for entertaining and full-time living. With the help of an architect, part of the house and the former garage were redesigned into dining, living and kitchen space, and a new garage wing was added. The Snyder home on a flat lot in Park Place has a view, seen through large windows, of the Roanoke River arm. The open layout main level is ultra modern with everything — the rooms, fireplaces, furniture and accessories — looking sleek and stylish. The kitchen has a combination of natural and stained red birch, a preponderance of black and steel and a rounded triangular island. Three guest suites are on the lake level, as well as another guest suite above the garage. There are modern curves and circle designs on rugs, doors and mirrors throughout the house. Unusual domed ceilings are found in the entry foyer and the dining area. Visitors will notice the bamboo floors, stone interior walls and the double and triple tray ceilings. Making waves SML’s 2015 Antique and Classic Boat Show marks its silver anniversary by bringing new boats, new people and more fun to its yearly fall celebration of the watercraft of yesteryear.

Alan Frederick, piloting his 1948 vessel, is a New York native who is chairman of the Antique and Classic Boat Show and Festival. Frederick self-restored nearly all of “Spiffy” — hull, decks, engine, systems — leaving only the chrome and leather upholstery to hired experts.
“If anyone’s been to the show before and they come this year, it will look like a different show. There will be a lot of new boats that they’ve never seen before,” said Frederick, who has persuaded wooden and fiberglass antique boat owners to bring their pride and joys to SML for not one but more than four days of classic and antique boat camaraderie, learning and fun. The influx, Frederick estimates, will bump up the number of boats at the show from an average of 50 to close to 80 for this silver anniversary. “It’s a family event,” Curnow said of the public show, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that Saturday, and will have a similar format to years past, including a classic car display in addition to its signature judged display of classic and antique watercraft. “We’ll have a ship store with nautical items and T-shirts for purchase, there will be food vendors and some vendors that are not related to antique boats, like jewelry. We’ll also have a judging training course for young children, to teach them about classic boats and the things to look for, and they’ll go around and rate the boats. There will also be boats giving rides as well.” After the awards banquet at Mariners Landing concludes Saturday night, exhibitors and club members will embark on a two-day water tour
of SML to see what restorations local enthusiasts are working on. That will include five stops at restoration workshops and homes of lake-resident ACBS chapter members, complete with lunch stops at area restaurants. “People get intimidated by the size of this lake. It’s easy to get lost, so if you can partner up with people and guide them around the lake, it’s much better,” Curnow said. Two of the stops will be Curnow’s home, at which resides “It’s About Time,” his 22-foot 1948 Chris Craft Sportsman (featured on the cover of Smith Mountain Laker magazine’s September/October 2014 issue), and Frederick’s home and workshop, at which his 20-foot 1948 Chris Craft custom runabout “Spiffy” docks and where he is currently restoring a rare 1921 Disappearing Propeller Boat, or “Dippy,” along with his own 1948 Chris Craft Sportsman sedan, similar to Curnow’s but with a hard top. “This year is different — normally there aren’t cruises,” noted Curnow, who encourages lake residents who overlook the Blackwater and Roanoke rivers to watch for the boats from their decks and docks both that Sunday and Monday, respectively, beginning at 10 a.m. The show this year may have a special focus on SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

its anniversary celebration and in introducing as many antique and classic boat enthusiasts and their watercrafts to the area as possible, but one thing that remains constant about the club each year is its commitment to charitable giving. Frederick says the club keeps just enough profit each year to stay out of debt and continue its club activities and shows, but its main goal is to contribute to the lake’s charities. “We have all these boats that we want to show off, but whatever money we make from [the show], our club gives to the charities around the lake. Whatever monies we do make, we give back.” In addition to their charitable goals, both Curnow and Frederick would like to see the silver anniversary show foster new passion — for SML and for classic boats — in all who participate. Sharing the wonder of classic boats is what Frederick, whose own childhood did not include water or boating, thinks can ignite the spark in all who come into contact with these restored labors of love. “You have original power, the sound is different, the smells are different and when you pull up to the dock, everyone walks over to a classic boat. It’s like a Steinway on the water.”

Screen dream A documentary by Blue Ridge PBS on the lake’s anniversary is getting the red-carpet treatment in October.
S
mith Mountain Lake will roll out the red carpet in October. A pre-party and premiere are planned for Oct. 24 at Westlake Cinema around the debut of the Blue Ridge PBS documentary about the lake, celebrating its 50th year since reaching full pond. The one-hour film looks back at the initial stages of the Smith Mountain Dam’s planning, the creation of the lake, its early development and the evolution into a retirement and recreational community. First-hand accounts and archival footage throughout the years will be featured. “For me personally, doing a documentary on the lake was a very exciting prospect,” said Carol Jennings, production manager at Blue Ridge PBS. “My family camped there for many, many years, and I have a lot of fond memories of those DON PETERSEN visits. I also saw how much the area changed over the years and could only imagine what it was like before the lake.” The idea for the documentary emerged a few years ago, as PBS was wrapping up other projects and looking for new avenues to pursue. “I started pondering things, places, events that would soon have a milestone anniversary,” Jennings said. “Being of a ‘certain age,’ a picture that my

Mom took popped into my mind. It is of me, as a toddler, standing on a fence post. My parents had taken a drive to see the area that was soon to be Smith Mountain Lake, and that fence post was eventually going to be in the bottom of the lake. The photo was taken in September 1963, the same month the lake began filling. After some quick math, I realized the 50th anniversary of the completion of the lake was coming up.” Jennings said that she knew the history of the lake would yield a wealth of stories about the area before the lake, during construction and about the years afterward. Researching and gathering footage began in July 2014. Since then, she said, footage has been captured in all seasons, interviews have been conducted and photos located. Work on the film is expected to continue into October, something not unusual for this kind of project. Helping to make the documentary a reality was American Electric Power, which stepped in with primary funding. The offices of economic development in Bedford and Franklin counties offered financial assistance as well. “John Shepelwich, with AEP, has been a tremendous help,” Jennings said. She also credited members of the Virginia Inland Sailing Association,

the staff at the dam, the crew of the Virginia Dare, members of the SML 50th Anniversary Celebration committees and various families and individuals who helped connect her with places and stories at the lake. “One of the most interesting parts of this project has been hearing the stories of the men and women who worked on the creation of Smith Mountain and Leesville dams and lakes,” Jennings said. “The early ‘60s was a different era, and technology was quite different.” She noted that several locals went to work on the dam project right out of high school or off the farm. As excitement around the lake builds for the 50th, the steering committee, which consists of lake residents, businesses and organizations working together to promote the anniversary, and others involved with event planning came up with the idea of the red-carpet premiere. A pre-party will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Oct. 24, immediately prior to the film’s initial screening, for patrons and 50th anniversary sponsors only. That party will feature the SML Steel Drum/Parrot and Toucan Bands, champagne toasts, a slice of the multi-tiered 50th anniversary cake, a complimentary keepsake photo and a gift bag. “This once-in-a-lifetime event is an opportunity to be a part of lake history by celebrating the incredible memories made here over the past 50 years,” said Bill Piatt, chairman of 50th anniversary steering committee. Patrons and sponsors will receive tickets to the screening, and general admission seats are available. “As a producer, it’s exciting to have a documentary shown on the big screen,” Jennings said. “It has a whole different feel than it does on a television at home. It can also be a little intimidating to see your work on a screen that big in a room with potential critics and hopefully fans!” The documentary is slated to air on Blue Ridge PBS in late October or early November, and it will be made available to other PBS stations in Virginia. Bonus footage and segments are likely to be added to the DVD and BluRay versions when they’re released at a later date.

D
uring Don Fink’s adolescence, race-car drivers were the people many kids admired to satisfy their curiosity for speed. But after a family friend landed his plane on the Fink family farm in Michigan and offered young Don a ride, all of the clippings and photos of Indianapolis 500 drivers came off his wall to be replaced by ones about his new obsession: flying. “I was of an age where there was a fascination with flying,” Fink said. “All this in the midst of the seminal event of the 20th century, which was World War II.” Fink, 80, went on to spend the rest of his life connected to aviation, first through military service and then as a reporter and editor with Aviation Week & Space Technology Magazine. This background led to the creation of his first book, “Escape to the Sky,” in 2012 and the central character, Ben Findlay. That book chronicled Ben’s initiation into flying, his recruitment into the Spanish Civil War his capture by nationalist forces and his ultimate

escape to England just in time to join the Royal Air Force as World War II erupted. The sequel, “Return from the Abyss,” reengages with B-17 bomber pilot Ben and follows his path through the WWII. “If you were 20 years old on a flight crew like that, you were the old man,” Fink said. The book, a news release said, “is a personal look at the sacrifices made by a generation of young men when confronted with the challenges and dangers of modern warfare.” It’s hinged largely on the passion Fink has for flying and the respect he gave to those who served. Fink and his family moved to Minnesota when he was still a teen, and he spent most of his Sunday afternoons at a nearby airport getting flying lessons. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota and joined the Minnesota Flying Club and the Air Force ROTC. Fink declined to sign an indefinite service agreement with the Air Force, so instead of flying, he worked in intelligence and information in Paris and other parts of France. While there, he came into contact

Abandon By Blake Crouch “Abandon” is an assured pageturner that takes the reader back in time to solve a mystery from 1893. This sci-fi/thriller is depicted through the eyes of a journalist as she treks through an unforgiving landscape to an abandoned mining town with two back-country guides, a history professor and two paranormal investigators to try to uncover the truth from long ago. As this group discovers, the past is not dead, and it also seems to be coming after them. — Amy Hanek

with pilots, including a Tuskegee airman and some B-17 bomber pilots, who shared their combat stories. Once Fink’s Air Force term was up, he entered journalism, ending up with Aviation Week. With that publication, he worked in Washington, District of Columbia, covering the space program, and then in Switzerland and France. By the early 1970s, “Our boys were more fluent in French than they were in English,” Fink said. The Finks decided to come back to the U.S., where he rose through the ranks of Aviation Week to become editor-in-chief. Fink retired to the lake 20 years ago. “Return to the Abyss,” he said, “can be considered a flying book. But what I really wanted to do was write a character-development story, how a young kid from a farm in Michigan could be swept up in the seminal event of the 20th century and how he matured along the way under very different circumstances.”

This year, 2015, marks the 25th anniversary of this once-a-year occasion to peer inside our neighbors’ fabulous homes; a rare opportunity to legally walk through and take notes for that remodeling pipedream you’ve had in the works for the past decade. accomplished without having to contend with those pesky “Trespassers will be prosecuted” signs. The tour appeases our voyeuristic curiosity while also raising funds for worthy causes. It’s a win-win. As this year’s tour date approaches, allow me to serve as your virtual tour guide. Offered here is a summary of tour reminders and do’s and don’ts. Feel free to tear out this cheat sheet to keep with you — please refer to it as often as is necessary.

It’s NOT OK to:
1. Arrive by car or boat.
Trot up to the front door via horseback — unless you employ your own personal “scoop troop.” It’s also not cool to land your helicopter on the front lawn — you know who you are.
2. Use the driveways, walkways, & stepping stones.
Traipse through the flower beds like a lovesick Labrador.
3. Make nice with the owner–perfectly acceptable to ask what they do for a living or if they are retired.
Ask the residents how much they want for the house–your mama raised you better than that.
4. Politely partake of any snacks offered.
Forage through the stainless steel side-by-side fridge looking for a Dam Lager.
5. Admire the beautiful bathroom update with the gleaming marble countertop, porcelain tiles, and heated toilet seat.
Take a shower.
6. Drink in moderation. Accept the glass of Chablis the host is offering; but pass on the opportunity for a second.
Get drunk. This isn’t a pub crawl.
7. Be polite and courteous; remember this is someone’s private home.
Yell out to your spouse in the next room: “Hey Ethel! Check out this family photo–sooie!” Along these same lines, it’s not cool to proclaim “Our house is way nicer than this.”
8. Quickly move through the tour and then head to the club to watch the big game.
Grab the remote and start rabidly clicking and searching for ESPN College GameDay.
9. Wear tasteful attire; you aren’t expected to sport a tie, but you should keep it chic and stylish.
Tour in a wet bikini, flip flops, and wrapped in a beach towel.
10. Thoroughly enjoy the tour and move along at a steady pace.
Camp out for hours; you’re on the home tour, not visiting for Thanksgiving.
