It was only 10 years ago that I first visited the lake, which at the time was nurturing the vision of what the area has become today. I was a guest under the guidance of my future wife, who took me over the Hales Ford Bridge, to the shops of Bridgewater Plaza and down winding roads that came to an end only because the expanse of the lake lay before us. Now, I’m a local, doing Christmas shopping in Westlake, choosing a spot in downtown Moneta for lunch and revisiting Bridgewater Plaza, this time with my kids by my side so they can stand on the decks and feed the fish.

The American chestnut tree once dominated 200 million acres of the eastern U.S. However, in the late 1800s a fungal pathogen from Asia caused chestnut blight, and by 1950, nearly all mature chestnuts were gone.

In 2009, a group of scientists, who had founded The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF), announced the first planting and testing of seeds, which were potentially blight resistant.

Additional breeding and development is underway, and Smith Mountain Lake State Park was selected recently as a planting site.

Brian Heft, the state park’s manager, and Reed Stanley, district resource specialist of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, found a site at the state park that had the soil type and other factors that made it a good location for testing the new strain of American chestnut. Heft offered the park site hoping that the trees could be established, and ultimately provide an abundant supply of chestnuts for wildlife.

“Site preparation has been completed, removing stumps and grading to get the area ready for planting,” Heft said.

Approximately 45 participants helped plant the seedlings April 8, including representatives of the Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park, the Blue Ridge Foothills and Lake Chapter Virginia Master Naturalists and the Virginia Service and Conservation Corps.

“There are about 325 seedlings planted,” said Matt Brinkman, TACF’s mid-Atlantic regional science coordinator, who is overseeing the planting project. “They are the most advanced strain available, which is 15/16 American chestnut and 1/16 Chinese chestnut.”

Switzerland In October, Bonnie and Joe Conradi of Moneta visited Germany. They took a cogwheel train and cable car to the top of the 9,718-foot Zugspitze, a mountain in the Bavarian Alps. They took a day cruise on the Rhine River where they observed many beautiful and historic sites and castles, touring two of them. They also took a train trip to northern Germany to the town of Wilhelmshaven to visit and meet for the first time Bonnie’s cousin, Peter, and his wife Jutta.

A mother’s wish

M

oneta’s Karen Wrigley has turned over the key to the castle — well, the castle library, at least.

Wrigley and her husband, John, met up last September with her sister, Cindy Plantenga, who lives in Switzerland, to travel through Italy, Germany, Austria and Lichtenstein, along with Cindy’s husband, Doug. One important destination was Trostburg Castle in Ponte Gardena, Italy. It was there, during the end of World

War II, that Wrigley’s father came into possession of a 17th-century book and the key to the castle library.

“This book and key was something that he always showed,” Wrigley said of her father, James Page. “It became a story and an inspiration. He very much cherished them.”

But after her father passed away about three years ago, Wrigley and her siblings wanted to realize their mother’s wish that the items be returned to the castle.

The book written in 1661 contained the stamp of Trostburg Castle, and Cindy Plantenga learned that it was only a couple of hours away from her home in Switzerland and was under the care of the South Tyrolean Castles Association.

So they planned their trip.

Upon arriving, the couples were given a royal treatment that included a three-hour tour, getting to go places and see things that the average tourist doesn’t get to. And they were able to cap off their visit by having wine in the castle dining room.

While there, they met with a castle official and formally returned the key and book at the entrance to the library.

SwiSS AlpS John and Karen Wrigley of Moneta hiked with Laker Magazine to Seealpsee and then to Ebenalp, where they saw one of the world’s most unusual restaurants, considered that because of how it is nestled into the side of a mountain.

They also brought a sweatshirt highlighting Smith Mountain Lake on a hike high in the Swiss alps from Staubern down to the Bollenwees restaurant and back again.

Costa Rica Patty and Ted Geiger of Penhook spent spring break in Costa Rica with their college-age sons, Clay and Danny.

They zip-lined, rappelled waterfalls, rode ATVs into the rain forest and enjoyed a few pina coladas. Florida In September, Bob and Molly Banta traveled to Scotland with the UVa Alumni and Parents group. The trip was titled Highlands and Islands and included historical attractions in Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as extraordinary scenery in the highlands and lochs. They are shown at Holyrood Palace, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. Included in the trip was a visit to St. Andrews where they were able to walk the “Old Course.”

Gil and Carol Miekina’s travels have been extensive, and that tally doesn’t double-count India, Thailand, Japan, African safari countries, Russia, France and Italy, each of which they’ve visited more than once.

When they were working and dating in suburban Chicago, Carol said to Gil, who seemed to be ready to propose, “I don’t want to settle down. I want to travel.”

Gil answered, “Well, who do you want to travel with?”

They have been traveling life’s journey together and visiting foreign places ever since.

But despite all of the exotic places they’ve seen, the Miekinas chose Smith Mountain Lake for their retirement.

Carol said, “Living in a rural area in my youth, I grew to enjoy nature and the peacefulness of small town life, so that made relocating to Smith Mountain Lake an easy move.”

These two former teachers, who spent most of their working years in Jamestown, New York, searched several southern lakes, coastal Virginia and the Carolinas before discovering the lake of their dreams while visiting friends in Roanoke.

Once they saw SML, they invested in a lot in 1989 hoping it would increase in value while they waited for retirement. Prior to actually building a house, they realized their lot wasn’t near the lake’s sailing activity, so they sold it and bought a lot in Waverly, across the river from the Blackwater Yacht Racing Association.

Their 4,000-square-foot, open-concept home took about 10 months to build and was completed in 2002.

Their sailboat, Tundra Swan, sits in a cradle at their dock ready to race — and add to the multitude of first place pennants that crowd the walls of a room on their lake level.

Outside, their home presents as a pleasant lake house that, with the help of Fiddlehead Designs, is nicely landscaped. Both Gil and Carol took the Master Gardeners course, so they know what plants

do well in Virginia and how to keep them thriving.

Inside, the home is a treasure-trove of special things, beginning with several collections. Duck decoys, Santas, bunnies and toy soldiers are among the items that are artfully displayed.

The Miekinas like antiques, and some of the collections include items that are decades old. But there are also unique single pieces, like the table in the great room made of printer’s blocks.

“I grew up in a small town and went to North Park College in Chicago,” Carol said. “That experience led me to want to see more of the world. Once bitten by the travel bug, it led to feeling that travel was just another aspect of life.”

The couple’s of travel is reflected in the items they’ve collected from exotic locales. On the lower level is a map of places they’ve visited, the destinations marked with pins.

For several years they led National Educational Association tours to countries during summers. And after retirement, they have maintained a blistering pace of travel — visiting Peru, Guatemala, Belize, El SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The home of Gil and Carol Miekina in Moneta has hundreds of pieces from their travels to more than 50 countries. Among the items are antique Peruvian dolls, British toy soldiers, a hand-carved swan, a table made from early 1900s print blocks from England, a 100-year-old Japanese theater mask and red Chinese laquerware.

“We’ve made OAT’s list of frequent travelers,” Gil said.

The couple’s den has a sailing theme with artwork, an Egyptian sailing vessel, lithographs of what Gil calls “Navy guys” — John Paul Jones, Admiral David Farragut, Admiral Matthew Perry and Commodore Stephen Decatur.

“When I was 11 and 12, I attended summer camp in Minnesota where I learned to canoe and sail. Sailing became a passion that led to sailboat collecting, sailing art and sailboat racing,” Gil said.

But in the same room there is also a Maasai shield and spears, a Buddha, a dragon symbol of Bhutan and Gil’s toy soldier collection.

While their travels have taken them to many exotic and historic places, the Miekinas say there’s no place like home at Smith Mountain Lake.

“When I was in high school, my mother encouraged me to go to the Chicago Art Institute summer school,” Carol said. “The summers I spent there built an appreciation for art and design, which has carried into our interest in human-made articles and art in general. “ The dining room curio cabinet displays orange and blue Russian boxes, and below, there is red Chinese lacquerware.

“When I was growing up,” Carol said, “My mother and aunt were always involved in making things — crocheted items or clothing — so I grew to appreciate the work and craftsmanship involved.

This was also reinforced by the fact that my parents were both involved in the furniture industry.”

In the lake level kitchenette, there are shelves housing pottery from Peru, Guatemala, Costa Rica and baskets from Venezuela and Puerto Rico.

Atop an armoire are animals from China handmade from tiny strips of bamboo. Gil and Carol acquired these in 1978 when that country was first opened to westerners. They said that they doubt these items are still being sold.

In addition to the kitchenette and family room on the lake level, there are two guest bedrooms, one of which reflects Noah’s Arc with a quilt and handcrafted primitives of that theme. The other bedroom is the Swedish room, done in the yellow and blue of that country’s flag with items acquired on trips to the homeland of Carol’s father. One such trip lasted two months, during which they bought a Volvo and put 2,000 miles on it before shipping it home. A shadowbox displays her dad’s photo, passport and information about when he became a U.S. citizen.

Despite seeing many places while traveling, the couple say there’s no place like home at SML, especially sitting on their screened porch — which Carol says “feels like being in a tree house” — and looking out at the expanse of serene lake.

Adds Gill: “One of the great things about living at Smith Mountain Lake is that, no matter where you travel to, you never have to feel disappointment when it’s time to come home.”

This initial process ignites the sparks of creativity. In an inspiring passage, Sorin writes, “To imagine is to see possibilities, to envision realities that don’t yet exist and map out secret paths not yet charted.

Our imaginations are our own personal mental playgrounds, where we release our dreams to romp without risk or fear.”

A garden designer by profession, the first assignments Sorin gives new clients is to imagine what they’d like their garden to be and to collect photographs of gardens and garden features that they like, that resonate. Not everyone at first is comfortable doing that, but the transformations that Sorin sees once a client begins to tap into his or her creativity is dramatic: “Within forty-five minutes, Martin had pulled out a box of his son’s colored pencils and was excitedly sketching out ‘just a few thoughts’ he had. … The hard lines of his face softened, and his whole body seemed looser and more relaxed as he drew.”

An intimate relationship with a garden is built through its care, as the needs of each plant become apparent and the conditions for growth are tailored. Pruning, as done by Karin Mullendore of Wirtz amid the bloom of her garden, is part of this process.

The process of discovering what garden designs resonate for you not only helps narrow the possibilities for the garden you want. It also is vital to begin unearthing the authentic roots of who you are as a unique individual.

Once you know the elements you want in your garden, the next step is to begin envisioning what features your garden will have and what it will look like. Now comes the planning stage when your dreams and visions are at last put down on paper. Sorin puts it poetically, saying, “Planning is the problemsolving element of creating. Here is where you will begin to give shape to your imaginings, your style, and your physical reality in order to lay out the blueprint of what you hope to create.”

Part of this process is accepting the reality of what is, perhaps a too-shady lot, a very steep slope, an unsightly view, and working within that confine to, “make something wonderful from it.”

At last comes the planting stage, when you put your plans into action. Many people are overwhelmed by the wealth of choice in the world of plants. Where do you begin choosing? Good questions to ask at this stage are: Does this plant fit the tone, vision and style I want for my garden? Is it appropriate for where I want to put it?

For example, for a modern design, a homeowner might decide to focus on succulent plants with bold texture and patterns. At the nursery, he could be attracted to the roses but realize they do not fit the vision he has for his contemporary garden. By the same token, a plant that may have the perfect form for your garden style may not be suitable for your climate or growing conditions (too dry, too wet, too shady). In those situations, search for a plant with a similar look that will flourish in your region and garden setting.

Once your garden is planted, the nurturing begins.

As you care for your garden — learning the needs of each plant, observing how it grows and what conditions make it happiest — you begin to build an intimate relationship with your garden. Sorin equates the care of a garden to “the art of parenting or relating to an intimate partner. … When you consciously tend your garden, you reconnect with your creation again and again, perhaps seeing it ever more in new ways.”

The sixth step is to take time to enjoy the results of your labors. Celebrate your garden, and share it with others.

The final step is completion as you cycle through the seasons to winter. While a garden is never finished, at the first frost, Virginia gardens go into dormancy. Sorin describes the melancholy she feels while she is putting her garden to bed for the winter, but then reminds us, “What it means, as a gardener and a creative spirit, to come back to the beginning — just you, your space, your breath, your soul — to rejuvenate and renew once again.”

The fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital is gearing up for June.

S

mith Mountain Lake’s third annual Lyrics on the Lake musical gathering, from June 18 to 21, will bring about 30 singer-songwriters from Nashville, Tennessee, in a fundraising effort for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

“This is not a competition but just entertainment for people at SML who love good music,” event organizer Ronnie Hess said.

There is no admission charge for the performances. All fundraising comes

is just a number K No one wanting to begin training at the age of 70 had ever been accepted at ATA Blackbelt Academy. But after a heart attack and lung cancer, Kay Clinefelter has embraced the physical and mental strength she has built through Taekwondo.

Not only has Kay Clinefelter been able to perform the moves associated with Taekwondo, she has excelled at them.

ay Taylor sat in a booth at the Little Chef restaurant in Roanoke and nibbled at her breakfast. Although it was 1 a.m., friend Jenny was as animated as ever, occupying the other side of the booth and entertaining Taylor with highlights of an evening spent kicking up their heels at the local country dance hall. As Taylor listened and laughed, she noticed a guy across the room who kept looking her way. Did she know him? Taylor tried to ignore the gentleman’s stares, but it was somewhat disconcerting.

As the stranger finished paying his check, he turned and began to walk toward the two best friends.

“Jenny, I think that guy is coming over here,” Taylor said.

Sure enough, he stopped at their booth and looked right at Taylor.

“I know if I ask for your name and number you probably won’t give it to me. So, here’s my name and number instead,” he said, sliding a piece of paper across the table toward Taylor. “I’d like to take you out. Call me if you want to.”

Thus began a romance that has spanned the past two decades.

After much cajoling from Jenny, Taylor called the brash, handsome fella and discovered that his name was Harold Clinefelter, he lived in Roanoke and was in the middle of this third divorce. Taylor could hardly be judgmental; she had been married four times. The one issue that did give her pause was their age difference. At 38, Harold was 15 years her junior.

“Back then, there was no word for it, but I’ve come to understand that I’m considered quite a ‘cougar,’” Taylor joked.

Taekwondo class was initially just a way for Kay Clinefelter (upper left) to exercise while dealing with small cell lung cancer and its lingering complications. She had longed to feel better and return to a more active lifestyle.

Harold eventually convinced Kay that age is just a number. After less than a year of dating, the two were married. They purchased a house on an acre of land in Bedford and settled in for a lifetime of happiness. Both had finally found their soulmates.

However, like many tales of romance, that’s not the end of Kay and Harold’s story.

You take Your health for granted, until You don’t

Kay, who now uses the last name Clinefelter, is no stranger to life-threatening illness. In 1992, she spent three days feeling awful, thinking she had contracted bronchitis. By the end of the third day she knew something was terribly wrong.

“I was sweating so heavily it seemed as though I was standing under a shower, and I could hardly breathe,” she said.

After being admitted to the hospital it was determined Clinefelter was having a heart attack.

Emergency angioplasty followed. But, as scary as that experience was, it was nothing compared to what would happen 16 years later.

In 2008, Clinefelter developed a nagging cough.

If there was one thing she learned from her heart attack experience, it was to trust her instincts when symptoms presented themselves and not delay in seeing a doctor. She made a check-up appointment,

a decision that turned out to be a wise one. At age 67, Clinefelter was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, 10 percent to 15 percent of all lung cancers are small cell lung cancer (SCLC), named for the size of the cancer cells when seen under a microscope.

SCLC often starts in the bronchi near the center of the chest. The disease tends to spread quickly.

Clinefelter learned her lung cancer was inoperable, but there were treatment options.

She began a grueling, four-month regimen of chemotherapy, followed by radiation. The side effects were taxing, including hair loss, permanent hearing loss, extreme fatigue and reduced body strength. However, with husband Harold by her side, Kay Clinefelter persevered. Today, she continues to manage her health, which has some lingering complications, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe.

Clinefelter understood that feeling healthy was going to be different following cancer treatment.

Nevertheless, she lamented to her husband that she wanted to improve. She longed to feel better and return to a more active lifestyle.

“Even going up and down stairs took a lot of effort,” she said.

Harold had an idea. Returning home from work one evening, he presented his wife with three white uniforms and announced he had signed her up for Taekwondo. He also had enrolled their granddaughter and niece at ATA Blackbelt Academy at Westlake Corner.

What is taekWondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that combines combat and self-defense techniques with competition and exercise. Students move through a progression of techniques and, as each level is mastered, they earn colored belts. A student begins with white and can work toward 10 different levels, testing for each one before being promoted. Black belt is the most revered status.

“Back in 2009, it seemed all the gyms were in Roanoke,” Harold Clinefelter said. “I knew that traveling from Bedford all the way to Roanoke was going to get in the way of regular exercise for Kay, so I looked for something closer to our home. That’s how I came across the academy at Westlake.”

Deborah Wargo, who owns the business with husband J. Phillip Wargo, a senior master in Taekwondo, said she was a bit surprised when Kay Clinefelter walked through the door. She had never accepted a student who was beginning the study of Taekwondo at the age of 70. “The art of Taekwondo requires equal amounts of mental and physical strength,” said Wargo. “In Kay, I saw a real spirit and willingness to commit to mind and body strengthening.”

Kay Clinefelter became black-belt eligible last year at the age of 73. Much of her skill is attributed to her mental fortitude, which helps her through the grueling testing process.

ATA Blackbelt Academy owner Deborah Wargo called Kay Clinefelter “one of our role models who inspires others.”

When Clinefelter first began her Taekwondo classes, she never conceived she would progress very far through the belts.

“I really just started as a way to exercise,” she said.

“I never imagined I would actually master any of the moves.”

But master and excel she did. As soon as she earned her second belt, Clinefelter realized she wanted to go all the way. Last year she got her wish, passing the test and becoming black-belt eligible at age 73.

“Kay is now one of our role models who inspires others,” noted Wargo. “She has received awards as an outstanding tester and has even assisted with exhibitions, including a demonstration at last year’s SML Chili Festival.”

Wargo also noted that the academy now offers “gold” classes each week that cater to those older than 50 working to build body strength and mental capacity.

There are some Taekwondo techniques that are difficult for Clinefelter to master. For example, because she bruises easily, she has to stay away from the boards. Instead, she’s become proficient with the Ssahng Jeol Bong — two short sticks connected by rope or chain. Because of her chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, she said she also struggles

occasionally with the necessary breathing techniques.

However, Clinefelter said she loves to spar and fight.

“And, I’m a great bodyguard for Cline [her nickname for Harold],” she joked.

When asked what she believed to be Clinefelter’s greatest asset, Wargo spoke glowingly of her student’s mental strength.

“Testing requires tremendous mental fortitude,” said Wargo. “For example, testing for proficiency in the use of Ssahng Jeol Bong requires 92 moves be done in perfect sequence.”

Clinefelter noted one of her biggest challenges is keeping up with her younger classmates.

“I do think the younger you start, the better,” she said. “I will say that it has been an amazing journey that I will never forget, and I plan to keep going as long as I can.”

Clinefelter attends classes twice a week and said her plans include moving through and mastering the nine degrees of the black belt, a goal she hopes to achieve by her 75th birthday. Above all else, Clinefelter said she emphatically believes no one should ever quit.

“When bad things come along, just keep going,” she said. “Figure out the best way around or through or over the problem and keep going.”

Wiley is an experienced and energetic orchestra builder, with talents as conductor, concert pianist, pops arranger, composer and recording artist. In addition to his dual symphony maestro-ship, he serves as artistic director and conductor of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival in Floyd County.

Guitarist Cyrus Pace is executive director of Jefferson Center in Roanoke and serves as both an educator and as a performer. He has performed with many notable musicians, including organist Lonnie Smith and clarinetist Don Byron, and has self-produced three CDs, including his latest featuring his brother, James, on organ. With a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Roanoke College and a master’s degree in jazz performance from Manhattan School of Music, Pace serves as adjunct professor of music at Virginia Tech.

Drummer/musical educator Thomas Taylor Jr. was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He studied classical percussion at UNC-Greensboro and graduated with a music education degree in 1991 and a master’s degree in 2009. Taylor is one of the Southeast’s most in-demand drummers, called upon regularly by noted area performers to help their music swing. He began teaching at North Carolina Central University in 1996 and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 2004. He has taught with Jamey Aebersold’s Summer Jazz camps and has recorded with Ken Rhodes, The Steve Haines Quintet, Baron Tymas, Jim Ketch and Ira Wiggins, and he has his own self-titled CDs.

Steve Haines (double bass), from Ottawa, Canada, directs the Miles Davis Jazz Studies at the University Steve Haines of North Carolina.

He has played with Joey Calderazzo, Wycliffe Gordon, Ralph Bowen, Joe Chambers, Fred Wesley and Joe Williams, among others. His albums as a leader, “Beginner’s Mind,” and in his quintet with Jimmy Cobb, “Stickadiboom,” have received international acclaim. He also plays on many recordings as a sideman, including Broken Shadows with Chad Eby, Doug Wamble and Jason and Branford Marsalis; and most recently Czechmate, with Pavel Wlosok, Joel Frahm and Bill Campbell.

As a solo pianist, David Stewart Wiley has performed with numerous major orchestras throughout the United States in concertos by a range of composers from Baroque to contemporary. He often conducts the orchestra from the piano. Wiley has

You might think that lake property owners need no encouragement to go boating, but it is surprising how many boats hang or float undisturbed in their slips with little or no attention from one summer to the next. If you’re a laker family for which boating has lost its magic, make an effort to get back on the water. A good early-season wash-down, battery charge and tidying of the on-board gear will put

your vessel on active standby, ready to roar at the turn of the key. “Hiring” a grandchild to detail the boat might be a win-win strategy. Commercial options include TNT Collision (483-4868) and SML Composites (352-9155). Both do restorations that make a boat seem almost new again — and cry out, “Let’s go!” Barb’s Upholstery (719-0500), SML Vinyl Solutions (769-9248) and SML Canvas (297-7500) are

among those who can renew worn seating, tops and covers.

If reliability or your rig is an issue, have a mechanic give it a checkup, making sure all systems and safety gear are functioning properly. Point is, get your boat ready so there aren’t obstacles to discourage spur-of-the-moment outings on gorgeously calm mornings, afternoons or evenings.

Mooch a ride. One sure thing

about most lakers: they love socializing on and around the water. So if you don’t have a boat of your own, don’t hesitate to invite yourself along with a friend or neighbor. An offer to chip in for gas or treat the skipper and mate to a beverage and meal at a lakeside pub will practically guarantee a “Welcome aboard!” response.

Places such as Jake’s on the Bedford County side of the bridge; Mango’s, Moosie’s, Chopsticks or Pizza Pub at Bridgewater Plaza; Mexico Viejo at Crazy Horse Marina; Waller’s at Smith Mountain Yacht Club; Mitchell’s at Mitchell’s Point and Kings Point Pub at Lake Haven Marina, both on Craddock Creek; Heath’s Waterfront Grill at Mariners Landing; The Landing at Bernard’s Landing; and the grill at Bay Roc Marina make great boat-ride destinations, especially on weekdays when traffic is light.

There are all kinds of ways to catch fish on SML, ranging from bobber fishing for pan fish off the dock (no licenses required for family members of residents) to deep-trolling umbrella rigs for stripers down by the dam to casting into bass beds along cove shorelines.

But a successful outing for anyone not really familiar with fishing on SML usually requires a qualified guide, someone who knows where the fish were yesterday and is in contact with the other guides out today.

The Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston is over 1,200 acres of outdoor fun with amenities galore. It’s also host to some of the area’s best youth programs and events going on all summer long.

Park Manager Brian Heft said the park is a place where there is constant access to activities for all ages.

“We’ve got the resource, all people have to do is come here for a day of recreation where they can picnic, take a family hike, swim, rent paddle boats or bike. Or parents can call ahead to get information on great kids events led by our park interpreter, Jeanette Lawler. Our Junior Ranger programs include identifying animal types, nature tours, doing nature-inspired crafts and geocaching,” Heft said. “It’s really a great recreational opportunity all in one place.”

When your children tire of the backyard kiddie pool, take them to the state park beach for a true beach-like experience. Kids can swim and play in the sand at the 500-foot beach, which offers a guarded swimming area with volleyball court, diving dock, concession stand, locker rooms and picnic pavilion.

Children younger than 3 are free, ages 3 to 12 are $2 on weekdays, $3 on weekends, and ages 13 and older are $3 on weekdays, $4 on weekends.

Have a Hay day

At the state park hayrides are a summer sensation and a popular family activity, according to Heft.

Park naturalists conduct hayrides for families every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the summer season. The rides last about an hour and fill up quickly. Call ahead to secure your spot and give the kids a special summer experience they won’t soon forget.

All About ospreys One of the Smith Mountain Lake State Park’s most fascinating nature activities is learning about ospreys and observing them nesting at the lake. After a winter hiatus farther south, ospreys will follow the natural bird migration northward. Smith Mountain Lake has been the summer home for ospreys for more than a decade. State park staff partnered with other lake agencies to build a pole and platform for the ospreys to nest on in time for the 2004 season. Learning about the birds offers an interactive lesson on wildlife at the park.

Kids who take part in state park summer activities get to watch a live feed of the

ospreys on the Osprey Cam with the park interpreter. Then, the park interpreter takes young discoverers on a short walk to view the osprey nest from the park. Over the course of the year, fans of the ospreys can watch them build a nest on the platform, lay eggs, birth the hatchlings and observe the parents feed and nurture their offspring. Junior naturalists may even get to see the impressive sight of the male osprey bring a fish to the nest for his young.

Wine down the trail

The seed may have been planted through mere conversation, but in time the Southern Virginia Wine Trail sprouted and now encapsulates a dozen wineries and a handful of restaurants and inns.

The winery business doesn’t happen overnight; it takes years for vines to become mature enough to create wine.

T

o produce a fine bottle of wine, one must always be patient. It seems patience is also necessary in producing a fine wine trail. After all, time was the main ingredient in the creation of the Southern Virginia Wine Trail (SoVA).

SoVA encompasses seven counties generally found between Smith Mountain Lake and John H. Kerr Reservoir. These counties are: Franklin, Bedford, Pittsylvania, Halifax, Campbell, Mecklenburg and Charlotte. Within this territory, along this trail, you will find a dozen wineries with many different types of wines, and vineyards, tied into one seamless experience.

Donald Furrow-Scott, owner of Hickory Hill Vineyards, remembered that the idea for the SoVA Wine Trail “grew from a conversation at a wine

festival” with Paul Anctil, owner of Sans Soucy Vineyards, a few years before it actually began. At that time, there were less than a handful of wineries operating in Southern Virginia.

But from the beginning, these wineries were already meeting regularly to share information, regarding soil, plant growth and, of course, wine production.

Due to the communication between these vineyards, Anctil easily become aware of a few new neighboring vineyards in Southern Virginia, and of their plans to open up shop in the winery business very soon.

Furrow-Scott explained that a lot of time must be planned between planting your first vine and pouring your first glass of vino. It will take a few seasons for the plants to produce fruit, and then more time for that fruit to be mature enough to create wine.

So, in 2009, when the timing seemed right, Anctil held a meeting with the existing and new operating vineyards in the area to discuss the launching of this new venture. Cameron Anctil, Paul’s daughter-inlaw, happened to be in the room during this meeting, and overheard what the group had been discussing.

She offered to help. A photographer by trade, Cameron had some of the skills needed to market the trail visually and felt comfortable with the tasks at hand. It wasn’t long before she soon adopted the role of director for SoVA. In its infancy, the trail began with just nine wineries.

Over the last six years, three wineries, six eateries, and three inns have been added. Anctil explained that she wanted to promote agritourism through the trail, and that these extra entities provided the full experience. But SoVA is more than just places to visit on a map; there are events, and great deals offered each year through the trail as well.

Cameron Anctil is planning a summer concert series over four weekends this year at four different wineries. There will also be a passport for those interested in cashing in on a few deals and taking advantage of the extra events planned at each location. Anctil said, “All of the individual winery’s passport promotions will vary. Some will be merchandise discounts, some wine discounts, some tasting discounts, some tickets to upcoming festivals.

It’s totally at the individual winery’s discretion.”

There are two wineries on SoVA located near Smith Mountain Lake: Hickory Hill Vineyards and Brooks Mill Winery. Hickory Hill, which Furrow-Scott coowns with his wife, Wendy, has been a member of SoVA since 2010. Furrow-Scott said he has enjoyed sharing in the advertising with other wineries on the trail, particularly with his neighbor Brooks Mill Winery. Brooks Mill Winery is owned by H.T. and Rhonda Page and is the newest addition to the trail.

With the growth each of these local businesses have made over the past few years, it’s hard to know for sure if this is due to SoVA. What both winery owners have valued the most has been a chance to connect and build something much stronger. Furrow-Scott explained, “Working with the other wineries is just such a great idea. It’s a huge boost in business, and in knowledge in running a winery.”

F

amily was the foundation of Linda Kay Simmons’ first novel, “Cahas Mountain,” which out of an Appalachian backdrop rose a story about love, loss and redemption.

The novel covers several generations of families from the 1930s through the 1950s and encompasses Franklin County moonshining, the tuberculosis epidemic and World War II. Rhodessa Rose is the daughter of a prominent moonshiner on Cahas Mountain, and her father’s success has attracted the attention of Willard Grimes, a smooth-talker who wants in on the larger business. Grimes, a small-time moonshine operator on Windy Gap Mountain, weds Rhodessa, fueling the story’s trials and tribulations. And then there’s the orphan, Lily, who is connected to Rhodessa through Willard.

“They live an idyllic sort of life until Willard comes down and disturbs this Garden of Eden,” Simmons said. He is “a real bad boy who never seems to learn life’s lessons.”

Much of “Cahas Mountain” is adapted from or has grown out of Simmons’ family history and the stories of her relatives. The real-life Rhodessa was born in 1919 and was the first wife of Simmons’ uncle, but she died from tuberculosis after just a year of marriage.

“To me,” Simmons said, “this is Rhodessa’s untold story had she lived. … She’s living her life through me.”

The first-person narrative covers a lot of ground in rural Franklin County and in Roanoke, where the tale ties into the city market, prohibition and the speakeasies of the era.

book, they’re really enjoying traveling the same roads and seeing the same places that my characters did, and it’s making it alive for them,” Simmons said.

The author speaks significantly of her book channeling the personality and wisdom of the characters’ natural surroundings and of hearing the birds in the trees and the spirits of the cemetery. Life exists in many places, and locations carry a deep significance.

“We talk of Cahas Mountain as being a very feminine energy, with the love and support and the gentle curves and the beautiful slopes bringing about a mother’s healing energy,” Simmons said. “And then I draw the contrast with Windy Gap Mountain, which was Willard’s mountain, as sort of sharp edges, angles, cliffs. [It’s] danger and adventure, taking you to sharper, deeper places.”

Simmons is a Roanoke native who now lives at Smith Mountain Lake and is a member of the Lake Writers group for authors and aspiring authors.

ummer is finally upon us. After this winter of 2015, sunshine and blue skies can’t arrive fast enough. I’m sure I speak for all of us when I proclaim: “I’m ready for some fun in the sun!”

Behold, this month greets us with the most fun of holidays — Cinco de Mayo. Well, St. Patrick’s Day is a close second, but it’s in March, which is a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to Mother Nature’s temperament. Move St. Patrick’s Day to June, and we have a new King of the Holidays.

Do you know why we celebrate the 5th of May? Nope? Me neither, I had to look it up.

Turns out we’re honoring the Battle of Puebla, during which the Mexican Army defeated the French forces. This took place back in 1862.

Do you think they celebrated with margaritas and nacho chips? I know I will.

This got me to thinking: how many other cool holidays are out there, just waiting to be discovered, celebrated and exploited by Hallmark? Imagine my delight when I unearthed a treasure trove of celebratory opportunities. I do love Google. If you’re in need of a party theme, look no further.

Jan. 26: Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. Who among us can resist the feeling of compressed plastic popping playfully between our fingers?

Feb. 2: World Play Your Ukulele Day.

How can you not love a ukulele? It’s even fun to say: ew-ka-lay-lee.

March 3: International Pancake Day.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t need an excuse to eat pancakes. I see a Smith Mountain Lake pancake cook-off in our future.

April 14: National Be Kind to Lawyers Day. A twist on a Winston Churchill

adage goes, “Lawyers occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.” ‘Nuf said.

May 4: Intergalactic Star Wars Day. May the fourth be with you. Come on, you had to have seen that coming.

June 28: National Paul Bunyan Day. A day to celebrate a big, strong man in a flannel shirt and tight jeans. Works for me.

July 20: Get Out of the Dog House Day. Representing a firm

belief that everyone deserves a little reprieve. Gentleman, mark your calendars.

Aug. 13: International Left Handers Day.

One of this southpaw’s personal favorites.

I proclaim that everyone in the SML area must fish and golf left-handed on this day.

Sept. 19: International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Our SML community celebrates our pirate days in July. However, here’s another chance to rock those eye patches.

Oct. 22: National Nut Day. Dedicating this one to the hubs. Feel free to choose your own favorite nut.

Nov. 5: National Men Make Dinner Day. The disclaimer notes no BBQ allowed. Hey, I don’t make the rules.

Dec. 20: National Sangria Day. Seems like this should be happening in tandem with Cinco de Mayo. Just sayin’.
