Bedford is an independent city located within the confines of Bedford County and also serves as the county seat. Considered part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, it is 29 miles east of Roanoke and 24 miles west of Lynchburg.

THRIVING ne aspect of economic progress at which Bedford County particularly excels is supporting and maintaining thriving businesses. According to virginia.org, the state’s official tourism website, the county is at the top of Virginia’s most successful businesses communities. Since a thriving business scene is at the heart of great quality of living, it’s no wonder virginia.org also lists Bedford as one of the fastest growing counties in Virginia. Bedford authorities accomplish a business-friendly agenda through vision, organization and assertion. According to Bedford County Administrator Kathleen Guzi, the county is proactive in promoting and encouraging economic prosperity through a cost effective economic development program. The program focuses on job creation and the enhancement of the quality of life in Bedford – essential ingredients for an economically healthy and prospering community. “Bedford County remains steadfast in our goal of maintaining a competitive position to attract new businesses and support the retention and expansion of existing businesses by creating and sustaining our sites, infrastructure, buildings and a strong business climate,”said Guzi, adding that there are several vital functions necessary to Bedford’s economic development. According to former Director of Economic Development, Sue Montgomery, “Economic development is unlike any other function in government – part sales, marketing and development, and infrastructure work, with a focus on a critical segment of the community itself, and that is enhancing and improving the economy.” Montgomery was Director of Economic Development for Bedford County several years ago when a vast undertaking, the New London Business and Technology Center, was launched. “It was time to create the most upscale park Bedford has ever had,” said Montgomery. “Through our partnership with Virginia’s Region 2000, an area-planning organization that emphasizes technology, and with a focus on Route 460 transportation, we now have an environment where high tech business can locate and thrive.” Montgomery said the nearly 500-acre facility houses the Center for Advance Engineering and Research, a joint effort by local industry and universities to conduct research and development projects, along with a fire and rescue department and general office space. Bedford’s excellent business climate continually attracts large business enterprises such as The Kroger Companies’ new store location in Forest, which opened in April. BUSINESS IN GROWING, Continued “After intense observation for several years, the population growth in the area was most important to our decision,” said Store Manager Brian Simpkins. “The Forest area was observed and studied for several years until it was determined that the population was adequate to support a new store. There is a dense concentration of households in the area, along with good schools and heavy traffic. These are all factors that influenced our decision.” The path of progress and growth in Bedford incorporates the new with the old and extends from Forest to Smith Mountain Lake where the new Downtown Moneta travels along Highway 122 just inside Bedford County and within five miles of Hales Ford Bridge. Downtown Moneta at Smith Mountain Lake started with a love for the past. The original town of Moneta disappeared when the bypass took traffic in another direction. While the deli, general store, and other quaint little shops went out of business, their spirits survived. Developers George and Michelle Aznavorian’s goal was to rebuild the town and surround it with old-fashioned single-family homes, townhomes, apartments and other features that return it to a traditional, quaint neighborhood called Mayberry Hills. A variety of retail shops and offices are already located in Downtown Moneta and plans for future development are underway. Of equal importance to Bedford’s business community are Centertown Bedford and Bedford Main Street. Like thousands of

communities across the country, Bedford has used the Main Street Approach™ effectively to address the complex and changing issues facing the downtown business environment. This program provides a flexible framework that puts the traditional assets of downtown, such as unique architecture and locally-owned businesses, to work as a catalyst for economic growth and community pride. A key way Bedford ensures continued economic security is through developing the future workforce. Bedford’s One program was instituted to assist the career development of middle and high school students. “We have a strong workforce development program that is committed to developing our future workforce, starting with our current high school students,’ said Guzi. “Working closely with Central Virginia Community College, we develop educational tracts that are needed for our existing businesses to stay competitive in the global marketplace.” Guzi said new businesses want to locate in Bedford because the county has it all. “Bedford has all the resources that are required for a business to grow and prosper by having infrastructure in place, which includes ready park sites with access to telecommunications, water, sewer and transportation,” she said. “Bedford abounds with natural beauty and is strategically located between Lynchburg and Roanoke metropolitan areas, offering businesses, residents and visitors a wonder place to live, work, and play.”

A GREAT PLACE Outstanding schools, advanced health-care resources, a mild climate, diverse recreational opportunities and attractively priced housing make the Bedford area not only a great place to live, but also a great place for business. A dynamic mix of agriculture, industry, tourism and retail gives the region a strong economic base. The industries are varied, offering a range of products and services. Sixteen companies employ 100 people or more. Numerous other small companies employing 10, 20 or more than 50 people, give the Bedford area economic vitality and diversity. The Bedford area’s progressive and proactive governments, as well as a supportive community, have played a large role in creating a positive business climate, which has lured many companies and allowed others to flourish.
The labor force within a 30-mile radius of Bedford, which includes Roanoke and Lynchburg, is in excess of 250,000 workers. Twenty-nine percent of the Bedford area workforce is employed in manufacturing. Service companies, retail trade, local government and construction are the next largest employers. Workforce training and development is available through several agencies as well as local community colleges. Bedford County has an active economic development office that promotes business, attracts new industries and helps companies establish themselves and thrive. DISCOVER irginia’s central East Coast location, mild climate and rich history make it an ideal travel destination. In Bedford County a number of attractions draw tens of thousands of visitors each year, including the National D-Day Memorial, Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest and Smith Mountain Lake. In 2008, visitors spent an estimated $84 million in Bedford County, generating $2.6 million in local tax revenue, according to Sergei Troubetzkoy, who directs the county’s tourism department and state-certified welcome center. “Tourism has a huge economic impact on our community,” Troubetzkoy said. “It helps keep local taxes down, and that amount of revenue can fund quite a few city and county departments.” In 2009, approximately 30,000 people visited Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest on the eastern edge of the county. A national historic landmark, Poplar Forest was one of only two homes designed and created by Jefferson, who served as Governor of Virginia and the third U.S. President. “It was our biggest year ever,” said Anna Bentson, Director of Public Relations and Marketing for Poplar Forest. “It was the 200th anniversary of Jefferson’s first visit so we organized a lot of extra events; the governor came and did a ribbon-cutting. There was a lot of extra buzz. We hope to continue that momentum.” Bentson said last year’s increased crowds included many residents of Bedford and the surrounding region. “A lot of the increase in attendance can be attributed to people in our own community rediscovering Poplar Forest,” she said. “The economy also had something to do with that with people staying closer to home and finding things to do in their own communities.” On the southern border of the county is Smith Mountain Lake, a major draw for those who enjoy water-based recreation or just a little peaceful R&R. Virginia’s second-largest freshwater lake (22,000 acres with 500 miles of shoreline), Smith Mountain Lake attracts water sports enthusiasts of all kinds. In recent years, SML has become an East Coast hotspot for wakeboarding and has earned national recognition as paradise for fishermen – casual and professional. The Blue Ridge Brawl, a stop on the Bassmasters Elite Series, has taken place at the lake the past four years. The event, which featured a $100,000 first prize in 2010, is televised on ESPN, providing international recognition for the area. Approximately 75,000 people visit the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford each year, said April Cheek-Messier, Director of Education. Visitors to the Memorial must purchase tickets at the Bedford Welcome Center, which is located nearby where U.S. 460 and Route 122 intersect. The arrangement has worked well for the facilities, drawing additional tourists to both and giving employees and volunteers the opportunity to share additional information about the region. “We tell them about Smith Mountain Lake, about the wineries and Peaks of Otter – all the other things there are to do in Bedford County,� said Cheek-Messier. “Hopefully, they’ll stay longer and continue to spend their dollars in the area.� Whether you live here or are just visiting, the Welcome Center is a great place to begin exploration of the Bedford region. The area is home to Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home (Poplar Forest), the National D-Day Memorial and numerous homes and districts of historic significance. POPLAR FOREST Thomas Jefferson – founding father, author of the Declaration of Independence, third president of the United States – often longed to be out of the spotlight to “detach myself from public life, which I never loved, to retire to the bosom of my family, my friends, my farm and books, which I have always loved.” In 1806, during his second term as President, Jefferson began construction on a secluded retreat on his plantation in Bedford County. Today, visitors to Poplar Forest can witness meticulous historic restoration in progress and tour the house to learn about architecture, preservation and life in the early 19th century. Ongoing archaeological excavation continues to uncover artifacts that provide insight into the plantation community that lived and worked at Poplar Forest. Special events each year include musical performances, historical theater, visiting artists and lectures. Poplar Forest is located in the community of Forest on the eastern part of Bedford County. It is open April through November (except Thanksgiving Day), Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For group tours the National Historic Landmark is open year-round by appointment. Admission is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors (ages 60 and over) and active military. Discounts are available

THE NATIONAL D-DAY MEMORIAL When the citizens of Bedford awoke early on June 6, 1944, few realized that hours earlier and thousands of miles across the Atlantic, a generation of their best and brightest were battling through the largest military operation in history – the invasion of occupied France, better known as D-Day. Fewer still could have imagined that by day’s end, this same little town would have the grim distinction of sustaining the highest per capita D-Day losses in the nation. With just more than 3,200 residents, Bedford lost 19 men in the invasion. It seemed only fitting that the nation’s memorial to D-Day be located atop the highest hill in Bedford, a permanent testament to the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of all Allied D-Day participants. The nineacre memorial, which was dedicated on June 2001, hosts numerous special events each year. The National D-Day Memorial is located in Bedford at the interchange of Routes 460 and 122. It is open 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. daily throughout the year but closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and occasionally during inclement weather. Admission is $7 for adults and $7 for children and college students. Kids under the age of 6 are admitted free. Guided tours are available for an additional fee. Richmond. Big-city activities are within easy reach, but as in smaller towns, Forest citizens are heavily involved in their community’s activities — through service clubs, the library, Jefferson Forest High School, and the Forest Youth Athletic Association, which owns recreation fields in town. Outdoor recreation is an important component of life in Forest, with golf and horseback riding popular. Smith Mountain Lake is only a 45-minute trip for fishing, boating, wakeboarding or other water sports. OUTLYING AREAS In the western and northern part of the county are the communities of Montvale, Villamont, Thaxton, Union, Kelso, Jordantown, Shady Grove and Mountain View. Montvale is one of the oldest villages in the county. It is believed that the infamous Beale Treasure from the early 1800s is located in this area and there have been numerous attempts to unravel this mystery. On the north side of the county, you can find several orchards with fantastic seasonal items like peaches and apples. Goode, located midway between Bedford City and Forest on Rt. 221, features scenic views of the Peaks of Otter, beautiful farms and many new housing developments. Big Island, located on the beautiful James River, is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Natural Bridge. A foundation has been created to restore the nearby Big Otter Mill, a saw and grist mill that dates back to the late 1700s. In the southwest part of the county are the villages of Goodview, Stewartsville, Chamblissburg and Moneta, which was once surrounded by canneries, dairies and farms. Now, because of its proximity to Smith Mountain Lake, there are shops, restaurants and many other community businesses and services to support lake residents and tourists. Huddleston, further east, is also a center of lake commerce. This village is close to Smith Mountain Lake State Park, a lakeside golf course and other recreation opportunities.
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE The southern edge of Bedford County borders Smith Mountain Lake, a 22,000-acre retreat featuring abundant activities for water sport enthusiasts as well as those looking for some relaxation. Now home to more than 20,000 people who thrive along its 500 miles of shoreline and delight in its waters, Smith Mountain Lake’s exquisite location continues to attract new residents, tourists and businesses. Smith Mountain Lake, which was created in the 1960s as a hydro-electric project, is also an ideal vacation spot. Sailing, boating, water-skiing, wakeboarding and jet-skiing are just a few of the activities available for water sports enthusiasts. Anglers find the lake especially appealing because of the variety of fish, including largemouth bass, rock bass, white bass, bluegills, crappies, walleye and muskies. Numerous Bassmasters events have taken place at SML over the past few years, including 2010’s Blue Ridge Brawl on the circuit’s Elite Series. Onshore activities are also plentiful. You can choose from five championship golf courses, hiking, biking and horseback riding. Numerous festivals and events take place all year, including the annual Antique and Classic Boat Show and Festival, the Wine Festival and the Charity Home Tour, an event in October that showcases some of the lake’s most amazing homes.
EDUCATIONAL Bedford takes great pride in the quality of its school system, including public, private, career and technical facilities. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Bedford Public School System serves approximately 10,700 students at 15 elementary, three middle and five secondary schools. That was the question on our minds as we loaded the whole family into cars, preparing for a fantastic Bedford dining experience. We found just what we were looking for! Just down the road a piece from Bedford City off Route 122 south were several restaurants in charming Moneta that were truly unbelievable. It was an experience of culinary and pocketbook delight!
Our first stop was Downtown Moneta’s Celebration Square, a colorful plaza that lives up to its name. Before us stood four great places to eat, Downtown Pizza, Hawks Deli, Freckles Ice Cream Parlor and the first place we tried, Casa D’Amici “House of Friends” Italian Restaurant.This unique Italian restaurant features a floorto-ceiling waterfall and a solid brass wishing well in the main dining areas. The interior opens up into two magnificent dining areas with cozy booths and three private family dining rooms along the outer walls. We were lucky enough to get one of the private dining rooms. Our children and grandchildren were right at home sitting around the big table. Our delightful waitress brought us a beautiful and fresh salad and delicious homemade bread. I tried the Seafood Milano entrée, and let me tell you, it might be the best thing I have ever eaten. Shrimp, scallops, and crab meat in a cheesy cream sauce baked golden and served with a side of pasta topped with garlic butter. My wife had Spaghetti Bolognese, thick meat sauce over pasta for only $9.99 including the salad and bread.Wow! The thing I kept thinking was, “am I really in Moneta? Awesome!” We promised ourselves right there and then we would come back to Moneta and try more places.
The second stop on our new restaurant adventure was Downtown Pizza. Our oldest son claims to be somewhat of a pizza expert, having traveled up and down the east coast apparently trying to eat pizza at every opportunity. He has a new favorite pizza place, and the rest of us agree with him. Watching the pizza makers hand toss pizza dough high in the air was very cool and there was no doubt our pizzas would be fresh. We ordered a large supreme pizza, an extra large cheese pizza and a chef salad for our weight conscious granddaughter. None of us had ever tasted pizza like this. The crust was perfect. It was crisp, flavorful and it was obvious that everything on it was fresh. We starting talking to the “Pizza Maker Guy” as my young grandson referred to him (I think his real name was Doug). He was so enthusiastic about how they make the pizzas it was a pleasure to listen. Doug went on to explain how they make the sauce from a “secret” recipe and how the dough is made every day from scratch. “No frozen pizza crust here,” he said.

When we finished our pizza we went right next door to Freckles Ice Cream Parlor. It was like being transported back in time. Red vinyl stools, hand dipped ice cream, 50’s music playing in the background and a full size replica of Elvis over looking the entire scene. I just smiled and thought this is where memories are made.And they were! Watching the kids’ woof down cones of “bunny tracks”, “birthday cake” and good old chocolate ice cream just made me think “I want to remember this moment forever”. The adults splurged on hot fudge sundaes, and milk shakes with cherries on top. We were grinning from ear to ear as we left. The next stop on our Moneta dining tour was Hawk’s Country Store and Deli. Emphasis on deli. If my son is the pizza expert, my wife is the queen of sandwiches. She put them to the ultimate test and ordered her all time favorite, a Reuben. She likes to say if you can make a great Reuben, you can make any sandwich great. We ordered and sat down at a table with miss-matched chairs and a checkered table cloth. It wasn’t long before we were chuckling at some of the funny signs on the walls. My favorite was one that said, “you don’t have to be crazy to work here, we train.” In a few minutes our food arrived. My wife picked up her plate and gave her Reuben a very close examination. She looked like a judge on a cooking show. Finally she put the plate back on the table took a deep breath and lifted the sandwich to her mouth. When her mouth reappeared from behind the generously thick sandwich all I could see was her smile, and she was saying something that sounded a lot like Mmmmmmmmmmmm! I almost got up to shake the hand of the man who made the sandwich but I was hovering over my pulled pork sandwich thinking if they can pass the queen’s Reuben test I must be in for a treat. There is pulled pork and then there is PULLED PORK! Tender, flavorful and super delicious. Others may say they have the best pulled pork barbeque but my vote goes to Hawks Deli, hands down. Not only was the pork great, the coleslaw was also first class. After we finished savoring every last bite I took a moment to ask the counter person where they bought the pork and coleslaw. He said, “sorry sir, we don’t buy it anywhere we make everything fresh right here.” I should have known! All my wife says when we talk about Hawk’s is Mmmmmm.
Not far down the road is another restaurant worth the trip to Moneta, so our eating adventure down Route 122 continued. Funny, our little dining adventures were starting to become the main conversation point among our friends. Everyone wanted to know what eateries we had explored lately. I was telling some friends about a visit four of us had taken to Fallon’s right off Route 122 just north of the Halesford Bridge. They boldly asked, what makes Fallon’s special? I thought for a minute and said, “I guess it is a lot of things. First, the building has been around for over sixty years. I love the atmosphere. Also, it’s just good food and service at really good prices.” We were really having fun trying new places. Fallon’s was a real treat - especially if you like history, cars, antiques and good food.The bar is said to have come from an 18th century river boat.The entire front end of a 1986 Cadillac hangs over the fireplace. The walls and ceiling are decorated with hub caps from almost every make and model car.You really can’t find a seat in the house where there isn’t something interesting to look at. It’s obvious the owners have tried very hard to create an interesting place to eat with a menu that people can afford. They have a special “20-10” section of their menu, where they serve up 20 different dinners each for only 10 dollars. It’s a great bargain! They also have a full selection of steaks, burgers, fish, pasta, salads really something for everyone. Among us we had the sheppard’s pie, the pot roast, Jambalaya, and a flat iron steak. We had a blast passing our dishes around sampling from each others plates. Like musical chairs only with food. Now when someone says, “where do you want to go eat”? We smile and say, let me tell you about our dining adventures in Moneta! We’ll see you there!!

RECREATION gribusiness has always been an important part of the Bedford County economy. And while it continues to thrive today, entrepreneurial farmers are retooling their business models as a way to spread the word about their homegrown products. Agritourism – a term that refers to tourists taking part in farm or village activities – is on the rise in Bedford County. From events designed to add a recreational aspect to farm visits to the Bedford Wine Trail, a five-winery tour of the county, there’s plenty to keep residents and tourists busy here. Danny Johnson, who owns and operates Johnson’s Orchard and Peaks of Otter Winery, said agritourism has become an essential part of his business. “I joke that I’m not a farmer any more, I’m an entertainer,” said Johnson, who organizes events nearly every weekend on the farm where his family has grown a variety of fruit since 1918. Some of the fruit is sold to the public and retailers while others are made into jams and jellies or the “fruit of the farm” wine. Most of the events include wine tastings, picnicking, tours of the farm and opportunities for children to get up close and personal with various animals, including ducks, chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, llamas and even a resident peacock. Hickory Hill Vineyards & Winery near Smith Mountain Lake also plans events most weekends in the warmer months, including their popular Sunset Saturdays. The family-oriented event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. and features live music from local musicians, children’s games, picnicking and vineyard tours. “We have a lot of new people come in the summer if they’re at the lake and happen to hear about it,” said Judy Furrow, who runs the business along with her husband, daughter and son-in-law. “But a lot of our visitors have become regulars. It’s great venue for kids with a big yard and field the kids can play in.” The Furrows also plan several evenings in the summer for an event they call “Wine and Moonbeams.” Local astronomer Jim Shauberger provides telescopes and a talk on the celestial happenings in the night sky. Daytime events are also popular at Hickory Hill, a bucolic setting offering beautiful mountain views. “What we wanted to do is for people to come and enjoy the day, not just taste the wine and leave,” Furrow said. “We wanted them to enjoy the vineyard. We have a lot of people come by to see what a farm looks like, how the grapes are grown, the rural aspect that people in the city aren’t accustomed to.” Continued on page 28 www.BedfordAreaChamber.com | 27
RECREATION IN RECREATION, Continued Both Peaks of Otter and Hickory Hill are featured on the Bedford Wine Trail, which also includes LeoGrande Winery, Savoy-Lee Winery and White Rock Winery. Started in 2006, the trail is designed to boost tourism and help Bedford’s wineries increase business by banding together. “It’s easier to promote the wine trail because there’s more of us out there to promote it,� Johnson said. “It’s easier for the county to work with us and the tourism department to promote us because they’re promoting the whole county.� And it’s a two-way street, Johnson said. “People come in and ask us where else they can go, what else they can do, where they can eat and stay. With the wine trail, our theory is to bring them in, treat them well and then promote all the other great things about Bedford County.� Maps to all the wineries on the Bedford Wine Trail are available at the Bedford Area Welcome Center and online at bedfordwinetrail.com. People who visit all five wineries can bring their stamped map back to the center to claim a free wine glass. Other area farms that have incorporated agritourism into their businesses include Gross’ Orchard and Mountain Run Farm. Gross’,
located just off Route 43 near the Peaks of Otter, specializes in pick-yourown apples and peaches. The farm’s Annual Apple Harvest Festival in October is always popular with live bluegrass music, food, crafts and wagon rides. The Coleman family operates Mountain Run Farm in Sedalia, which is dedicated to providing farm-grown, grass-fed beef, pastured poultry, pork, turkeys and catfish to local residents and businesses. The family organizes monthly farm tours as well as two larger events in the spring and summer where visitors can learn more details about how the farm is run and enjoy a meal prepared using the family’s products. “The tours definitely get people here,â€? said Carly Coleman, who helps husband Ben run the farm. “It’s almost an outreach, more for educational purposes than sales. ‌ We’re educating on why they should look for a local source for food, how that helps support us, helps support the local community and helps improve their health.â€? OUTDOOR ADVENTURE Few regions are as blessed with the abundance of natural beauty found in Bedford County. Nestled among the Blue Ridge of the Appalachian Mountains, the area offers spectacular scenery and plentiful opportunities for outdoor adventure. BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY The Blue Ridge Parkway offers 469 miles of picturesque travel across North Carolina and Virginia, including a scenic stint through Bedford County. Ranging in elevations from 600 to 6,000 feet, the Parkway is a beautiful trip in any season. A drive down the Parkway is slow-paced (maximum 45 mph) and relaxing. Numerous overlooks and trails along the way reveal natural and cultural history of the area. You’ll definitely want to plan a stop at the Peaks of Otter to soak up the beauty of the mountains, enjoy wildlife, have a lakeside picnic or hike one of the six trails. A nearby lodge, restaurant and winery are also available to add to the enjoyment of a day spent in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. PEAKS OF OTTER TRAILS Hiking trails at the Peaks of Otter range from easy (the one-mile loop around picturesque Abbott Lake) to strenuous (the 1.5-mile trek to the summit of Sharp Top). But no matter what the effort required, the reward justifies the endeavor. Those who hike to the top of Sharp Top will enjoy impressive 360-degree views of the Peaks of Otter, the Piedmont to the east, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley with the Allegheny Mountain to the west. There is a spur to Buzzard’s Roost featuring a series of large rock formations. Bus service is operated one-way and round trip seasonally. Allow two hours up and one hour down plus an additional hour for the spur to Buzzard’s Roost.

APPALACHIAN TRAIL The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes by the Peaks of Otter, along its amazing 2,175-mile-long path. Fifty-three miles of the trail run through the Glenwood Ranger District, where elevations range from 700 feet at the James River to 4,225 feet at Apple Orchard. Eight shelters are available. The trail visits the James River Face and Thunder Ridge wildernesses and meanders near the Cave Mountain Lake and North Creek recreation areas. In the Bedford area, you can join the trail at Blue Ridge Parkway mileposts 80.5 Floyd Field, 90.9 Bearwallow Gap, or Milepost 92.5 Sharp Top Overlook. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/appa. SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE One of Bedford County’s most prized natural resources is Smith Mountain Lake. With its 22,000 acres of sparkling water and 500 miles of pristine shoreline, the lake is a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts who enjoy wakeboarding, waterskiing, jet skiing, sailing, swimming, boating, tubing and fishing. Virginia’s second-largest freshwater lake, SML offers numerous public boat launch sites as well as companies that rent a variety of boats and personal watercraft. Anglers – from serious to occasional – also find the lake an ideal location. Known as a haven for striped bass, SML regularly hosts professional fishing events, including the Blue Ridge Brawl on the Bassmaster Elite Series. A number of marinas along SML’s shores offer boaters supplies, food and entertainment. Sailing is also a popular pastime at Smith Mountain Lake. The Blackwater Yacht Racing Association at Pelican Point Yacht Club is a non-profit organization made up of members who enjoy sailing and racing. The club has regular spring, summer and fall activities and invitational regattas
One of the best and most relaxing ways to see Smith Mountain Lake is aboard the Virginia Dare, a 19th Century replica sidewheeler that is 63 feet long and can accommodate 112 guests for a seated meal or 135 guests for an hors d’ oeuvre cruise. Operating out of the Virginia Dare Marina, cruises include private charters for weddings, birthdays or other special occasions. Smith Mountain Lake State Park is an ideal spot to hike, bike, canoe or kayak while enjoying the abundant wildlife and natural beauty of the area.
