Council to consider $35M bond for fire station BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer

plan to pursue a $35 million bond to build a fire station next to the Main Library and to seismic retrofit Fire Station 3. The dissolution of Santa Monica’s Redevelopment Agency left the public safety upgrades without a funding source. City officials will present council with an alterna-
tive plan at Tuesday’s meeting. The new fire station would replace Fire Station 1, which was built 55 years ago and has “surpassed its useful life as an essential services building” city officials said. A 2007 study showed that the building might not withstand an earthquake — that the workers
could be injured, trapped, or killed. The new station could fit up to seven apparatus bays and 50 underground parking spots. It would be able to hold up to nine fire trucks and 20 firefighters, an upgrade from SEE COUNCIL PAGE 8

Why do you need health insurance?” a caption asked. The answer to that question — posed in a presentation by a state-funded medical insurance educator working on California campuses — is vital to efforts to overhaul the nation’s health care system, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. Supporters and detractors of the Affordable Care Act are fixating on so-called “young invincibles,” generally healthy adults in their 20s and 30s who don’t rack up large medical bills. Only by collecting premiums from more infrequent users of medical services can insurance plans expect to offset higher costs of treating newly insured older and sicker patients. With critics producing ads urging them not to sign up, it’s unclear whether the prized group will respond to the outreach efforts. In California, about 22 percent of those who enrolled in coverage over the first two months were under 35 years old. National figures have not been released. LOS ANGELES Undaunted hobbits trumped princess power at the multiplex. Per studio estimates Sunday, Warner Bros. “Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” was No. 1 at the weekend box office with $73.7 million, besting last weekend’s No. 1 film, Disney’s animated fable “Frozen.” Melting down to the No. 2 position, “Frozen” earned $22.2 in its third weekend, bringing its impressive overall domestic ticket total to nearly $164.4 million. Internationally, the Disney hit gained $31.5 million. Despite its first place position, “The Desolation of Smaug” fell short of topping its prequel’s debut. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” which opened this same weekend last year, gained $84.6 million. It earned $131.2 million in international sales. “’Hobbit’ rules this date and Warner Bros. has linked this brand to this time of year very effectively,” said box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak. “We had an excellent weekend,” said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. “Of course, it could have been a little better, but the weather back East was really tough last night and probably took a couple million dollars out of my pocket. But our box office will survive. We are right on target to do very similar numbers to the last ‘Hobbit,’ which grossed a $1 billion worldwide (overall).” Lionsgate’s holiday-themed “Tyler Perry’s a Madea Christmas” came in third place with $16.2 million. “All of the Tyler Perry movies have done in that $20 million plus range, but the weather was a factor in some of the performances of these films,” said Dergarabedian. Another Lionsgate film, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” earned $13.2 million for the fourth place slot. To date “Catching Fire” has grossed $739.9 million, surpassing the worldwide box office total for “The Hunger Games,” which brought in $691 million. SAN DIEGO The U.S. Navy plans to increase sonar testing over the next five years, even as research it funded reveals worrying signs that the loud underwater noise could disturb whales and dolphins. Reported mass strandings of certain whale species have increased worldwide since the military started using sonar half a century ago. Scientists think the sounds scare animals into shallow waters where they can become disoriented and wash ashore, but technology capable of close monitoring has emerged only in about the last decade. Aside from strandings, biologists are concerned marine mammals could suffer prolonged stress from changes in diving, feeding and communication. Two recent studies off the Southern
California coast found certain endangered blue whales and beaked whales stopped feeding and fled from recordings of sounds similar to military sonar. Beaked whales are highly sensitive to sound and account for the majority of beachings near military exercises. Scientists, however, were surprised by the reaction of blue whales — the world’s largest animal — long thought to be immune to the high-pitched sounds. It’s unclear how the change in behavior would affect the overall population, estimated at between 5,000 and 12,000 animals. The studies involved only a small group of tagged whales and noise levels were less intense than what’s used by the Navy. Shy species, such as the Cuvier’s beaked whale that can dive 3,000 feet below the surface, have taken years to find and monitor. “This is a warning flag and deserves more research,” said Stanford University biologist Jeremy Goldbogen, who led the
blue whale study published this summer in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Both studies were done by a team of independent scientists as part of a Navyfunded, five-year project launched in 2010 to understand how sonar affects marine mammals. Navy officials say it’s vital to national security that sailors receive sonar training in real-life conditions. Environmentalists have long claimed that sonar harms marine mammals, which use acoustics to mate and forage. They want more protections and accuse the Navy of rushing to obtain five-year permits under the Marine Mammal Protection Act from the National Marine Fisheries Service to increase its sonar testing in U.S. waters without considering the latest science. “If you deafen a marine mammal for SEE SONAR PAGE 10

a couple of weeks ago about the lease of a building at the Santa Monica Airport and how City Hall shortchanged itself. City Hall wanted to encourage artists to work and create in Santa Monica. In 2001, City Council authorized city staff to enter into a lease fully consistent with a staff report that clearly required leasing a 22,500square-foot hanger to Santa Monica Art Studios for $175,968 annual rent payable from July 1, 2002 through March 31, 2011. The total rental income value over the life of the lease would have been a $1,539,720. The lease approved by council was signed in June of 2002 and was between the city of Santa Monica (landlord) and Santa Monica Art Studios (tenant). Yossi Govrin signed for the tenant and assumed personal liability for all its obligations. This lease ran from May 1, 2002 to April 30, 2012 with rent payments starting April 1, 2003. While there were variations in yearly rent, the total rental income for the 10 years was $1,443,432. It required staff review and approval of all subleases. Because Govrin was paying a low rent, he had promised to charge a “bargain” 95 cents monthly rent (per square foot) for 10 years as an enticement to artists to sublease space and create in his facility. City Hall has received virtually no data over the 10 years about the subleases. Local attorney Stanley Epstein, with 30 years of real estate experience, says, “As a result, each sublease is potentially illegal. Furthermore, in not receiving approval, Govrin breached his lease and it could be terminated by the landlord.” It appears that in most cases, Govrin was charging his subtenants market-rate rents, not the “affordable” rents promised. There’s no information as to how much money Govrin may have illegally pocketed from the invalid subleases. A First Modification of Lease Agreement, Number 8121 was entered into a year and half after the original lease was signed. There was no City Council discussion or approval (as required by law) of the modified lease, according to City Attorney and City Clerk records. Epstein says, “The unauthorized modification has cost the city almost a million dollars in revenue.” The modified lease runs from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2014 and provides for annual rental income of $101,400. The total rent revenue from July 1, 2004 to March 31, 2011 was $684,450. That’s $855.270 less than the $1,539,720 to be produced until the termination date under the original lease approved by council in 2001 — 55.5 percent less! Bottom line: Govrin paid City Hall much less and received much more from his subtenants than City Council expected. Govrin signed the modified lease as the director of Santa Monica Art Studios. City Attorney Marsha Moutrie approved as to form and then City Manager Susan McCarthy signed for City Hall. According to Epstein, “’Approved as to form’ means Ms. Moutrie did not negotiate the more generous rent or other terms that
have resulted in a substantial revenue loss for the city. However, it does mean she has opined that all legal requirements have been met including necessary council approval. This was false.” Epstein and I want to know why Govrin’s rent was substantially reduced in the modified lease. City Hall has refused to provide an explanation for the overly generous terms. Equally troubling is why the city attorney and city manager approved it with absolutely no review or approval by City Council, as required. How come the Economic Development and Airport Departments (now part of Public Works) failed to perform the required reviews of Govrin’s subleases? Why didn’t the Finance Department notice the declines in revenues after the unapproved, modified lease went into effect? Epstein’s request of council and the city manager to retain an independent attorney (whose fee could be recovered from a wrongdoer) to investigate all these issues (since the city attorney staff shouldn’t investigate its own department head) has been ignored. We believe council’s Annual Compliance of Development Agreement Review should also be expanded to include leases and other major city contracts. When it comes to honesty in government, this reminds me of the Dorchester House condominiums at 1044 Fourth St. in which, for over 30 years, City Hall failed to monitor the provision in its development agreement that required 15 low-income apartments — and still refuses to enforce that same obligation. “Affordable” apartments have been repeatedly bought and sold at market rates by non-qualifying persons who’ve moved into them. Last Tuesday, council decided in closed session to not pursue legal action which permitted another current owner to remain in a low-income Dorchester unit. Unfortunately, council’s action amends the development agreement without any public process. Therefore, like a similar settlement with another owner of three units at the Dorchester, it’s illegal according to Epstein. The lease to the Santa Monica Art Studios has deprived City Hall of revenue which we’re all making up for in increased fees and taxes and decreased services. And, the mishandling of deed-restricted Dorchester apartments has deprived 15 needy families of housing. Both cases are examples of a city staff and department heads (including a licensed attorney who supervises nearly 30 lawyers) acting at times in a neglectful and capricious manner, or worse. When exposed, they outright lie, obfuscate or spin tall tales. It does little to inspire confidence and trust in our government and its elected officials. BILL can be reached at mr.bilbau@gmail.com. to allow barges filled with fracking wastewater to ply the nation’s rivers on their way toward disposal. Many environmentalists are horrified, but industry groups say barge transport has its advantages. Now, the wastewater is usually disposed of by truck or rail, which poses more risk for accidents than shipping by barge, according to a government report. And one barge can carry about the same amount of waste as 100 exhaust-spewing trucks. The disagreements go to the core of the fight over shale gas drilling. Environmentalists say the chemicals in fracking waste are a tragedy in the making, but the industry says far greater amounts of toxic chemicals are already being moved by barge, including waste from oil drilling. In 2010, U.S. barges carried 2,000 tons of radioactive waste, almost 1.6 million tons of sulfuric acid and 315 million tons of petroleum products, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “We expect that shale gas wastewater can be transported just as safely,” said Jennifer Carpenter, of American Waterways Operators, a trade group based in Washington, D.C. Environment America, a federation of 29 state-based groups, strongly disagrees. The group said in a statement that it gathered 29,000 comments opposed to the proposal from people around the country. Courtney Abrams, the clean water program director for the group, urged the Coast Guard to “reject this outrageous proposal.” Extracting natural gas trapped in shale formations requires pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of water, sand and chemicals into the ground to break apart rock and free the gas. Some of that water, along with large quantities of existing underground water, returns to the surface, and it can contain high levels of salt, drilling chemicals, heavy metals and naturally occurring low-level radiation. The Marcellus Shale formation, underlying large parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and some neighboring states, is the nation’s most productive natural gas field. Thousands of new wells have been drilled there since 2008, and hundreds of millions of gallons of wastewater needs to be disposed of each year. Some states, such as Texas and Ohio, have many underground waste disposal wells. But Pennsylvania has only a few, meaning the leftovers have to be shipped elsewhere.
The Coast Guard proposal says barge companies want to move waste from the Marcellus region “via inland waterways to storage or reprocessing centers and final disposal sites in Ohio, Texas, and Louisiana.” That means large quantities of waste could be shipped on major rivers such as the Ohio; one of its main tributaries, the Monongahela; and the Mississippi. Critics say that if there were an accident, it could threaten the drinking water supply of millions of people. They also cite the uncertainty around what’s in that toxic mix. The Coast Guard is proposing to address that by requiring chemical testing of each barge load before shipment; test results would also be kept on file for two years. A Marcellus wastewater spill wouldn’t be any different from other threats, said Jerry Schulte, the emergency response manager for the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, which has members in eight states. Occasional spills and other pollution are “a part of life” on industrialized waterways such as the Ohio, he said. “Things happen, whether it’s naturally occurring, or spills,” he said. Municipal water suppliers also monitor river water, and if there’s a spill nearby, they shut intake valves until the problem has passed downriver. One of the largest river spills in the region’s history took place in 1988, when an on-shore storage tank ruptured in Pittsburgh, spilling about a million gallons of fuel oil into the river. The sludge flowed down the Ohio River, forcing many water suppliers to shut intakes for a week. But according to a 2011 report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the fatality, injury and air pollution rates for barge transportation are far lower than truck or rail transport. The Coast Guard is reviewing the comments from both sides, and it has the authority to approve or modify the rule. But there is no timeline for a decision, spokesman Carlos Diaz said. A leading industry group supports using barges for the waste but isn’t happy with the details of the Coast Guard proposal. In a Dec. 6 letter, the Marcellus Shale Coalition hailed the potential to reduce the waste being transported by highway but complained the proposal set the threshold too low for naturally occurring radiation, which would effectively prevent wastewater from being shipped by barge. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency couldn’t immediately say Friday whether they have a position on the barge wastewater issue.

Carbon dioxide emissions are indeed lower than at any time since 1994, according to data recently released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). But if you think that the rise of the hybrid car, our embrace of public transit, walking, biking and those new windows on the house are behind the trend, think again. According to the EIA, increased energy efficiency has played a role, as have recent warmer winters and the recession, but the key driver has been the swapping out of coal at power plants and industrial facilities across the country for cleaner-burning and now more abundant natural gas. The reason so much natural gas is around is the rise of hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), a technique whereby drillers inject water and chemicals into underground shale rock deposits to free up otherwise trapped natural gas. Fracking has allowed U.S. oil companies to access huge natural gas deposits from the Marcellus Shale in the Northeast and elsewhere. The increased supply has brought natural gas prices down so that it has been cheaper than coal during the last few years. Our carbon footprint benefits because burning natural gas to generate electricity generates about half the carbon emissions of coal for every megawatt hour of power generated. But Americans might not want to pat themselves on the back for too long, as the positive trend won’t continue indefinitely. “Replacing coal with natural gas reduces smokestack emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and mercury, but natural gas production and distribution comes with a host of problems, including methane leaks, contaminated water supplies, destroyed streams and devastated landscapes,” says Dan Lashof of the Natural Resources
Defense Council (NRDC), a leading environmental group. “And while gas-fired power plants have lower carbon dioxide emissions than coal-fired ones, their emissions are still far too high to be considered a global warming solution.” Furthermore, EIA says our energy-related carbon emissions are already rising again given recent increases in natural gas prices that have steered some utilities back to coal. The EIA anticipates U.S. energyrelated carbon emissions rising 1.7 percent in 2013 and another 0.9 percent in 2014. The most important remaining question, says Lashof, is whether or not the U.S. will continue to reduce its CO2 emissions to achieve the president’s 2020 goal of a 17 percent reduction from 2005 levels-and eventually the 80 percent or more reductions needed to prevent the most dangerous risks of climate disruption. The target is within reach, he says, but power plant carbon pollution standards, among other changes, will be needed. Lashof adds that the only way to keep the ball rolling is via a coordinated effort including stricter federal carbon and energy efficiency standards, new state renewable energy and energy efficiency incentives and reworked zoning and transportation policies that discourage the use of private automobiles. “We can build the clean energy future we need, but we aren’t there yet and it’s not going to happen by itself.” Also, even if Americans can mobilize to get their emissions in check, will it matter? During 2012, energy-related carbon emissions fell by some 3.7 percent in the U.S., but rose 1.4 percent overall around the world. the current station, which houses five trucks and 14 firefighters. Construction of the twostory station could begin the spring of 2016 and be completed in 2018. It would cost an estimated $32 million. Seismic upgrades to the 43-year-old Fire Station 3, which is on 19th Street at Arizona Avenue, would cost roughly $1.5 million. City Hall also wants to revamp the fire department’s training facility on Michigan Avenue, past Cloverfield Boulevard. The project would modernize the facility and replace the existing trailers at the cost of $1.5 million. City Hall commissioned a survey of Santa Monica’s electorate and found that a little more than half the voters would support a $78 million public safety bond. One bond City Hall was considering would have been placed on the 2014 ballot and need to be supported by at least two-thirds of the electorate, as the cost would fall on property owners. Seeing from the survey that a bond measure would likely fail, but finding that a significant majority of the electorate is concerned about public safety, City Hall is recommending a different type of bond — one that requires only council’s approval. If approved, city planners will return with designs early next year.

We have you covered last year, the most in a single year since the approval of the Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) in 2010. Council will be voting to extend the interim Zoning Ordinance, which has regulated the uses of different areas of the city and various types of businesses since 2011, so planning officials provided data about the developments that are in the works. If approved, the interim ordinance will remain in place through May, when the new Zoning Ordinance is expected to take effect. The Planning Commission will discuss the draft for the second of six times this Wednesday. Once they are finished with it, it will go to council for approval. Sixteen applications for developments were filed in the past year. Twelve are for mixed-use residential/retail projects. Two are mixed-use residential/hotel. One is a mini auto dealership. The last is a movie theater. Thirty-three applications are currently pending, of which 18 are considered to be priority projects. The total is actually down from earlier this year; in February there were 35 pending agreements. The most recent application was filed in October, for a 1,500-seat movie theater on the third level of the Santa Monica Place mall. Sixteen total projects have been approved since July of 2010. Two affordable hotels on the corner of Fifth Street and Colorado Avenue, approved last month, are the most recent.

It’s a lifestyle and mindset for retirees, empty nesters and younger parents who shuck traditions of home and work to roam from campsite to campsite, job to job. “It’s a job, it’s not a career, so you don’t have to take it so seriously,” said Ron Dale, a college graduate with a business degree. “Go and have a good time. ... You don’t have the stress of thinking, ‘I’ve got to perform at an unbelievable level. I’ve got to work extra hours so the boss knows I’m dedicated.’” It gives him more time to spend with his wife, 7-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter, he said. Since 2010, Amazon has recruited campers for its distribution centers in Campbellsville, Ky., Coffeyville, Kan., and Fernley, Nevada — places with modest populations where the company has to cast a wider net to bring in enough temporary workers to fill its needs. The stints last about three months, and the hours on the job tend to grow longer as Christmas nears. Dale, who just logged a 60-hour work week, said: “I’m the guy who grabs the presents and sends them to the kids for Christmas.” Some jobs include plenty of lifting and bending over, as well as walking up to five to 10 miles a day. Seasonal workers, including campers, play “an important role” in filling customer orders during the holiday season, said company spokeswoman Kelly Cheeseman. On its peak day in 2012 — Nov. 26 — Amazon customers ordered more than 26.5 million items worldwide, or 306 items per second. Amazon has said it expects an even busier holiday season this year. Overall, the Seattle-based company said it was hiring 70,000 full-time seasonal workers around the country during this holiday season. Seasonal workers at its order fulfillment centers are eligible for health care benefits and, on average, earn 94 percent of the wages of regular employees. Dale, 58, and his 31-year-old wife, Kristin, embraced the roving lifestyle this past fall. They loaded their kids, the family dog and some belongings into their 24-footlong camper that’s now home, pulling up stakes in western Kentucky for the migratory life. The Dales’ camping site the past few weeks gives them a sweeping view of scenic Green River Lake in south-central Kentucky. “It’s like those people that spend millions of dollars to pay for a view like that,” Ron

funded by a $1.25-million grant from Covered California, the state’s health insurance exchange for the public. They seek to demystify and pique interest in new health care options. Funding runs through the Affordable Care Act’s full enrollment period, which ends March 31. Still, getting answers for everyone remains a tall order. “When someone is sick, I tell them to see the doctor,” said pre-med student Tracey Ng, 19, of El Monte. “They say they can’t afford it because they don’t have insurance.” To address such cost concerns, the education team is tweaking its message. Initially, members publicized an example of a $51-a-month premium for comprehensive coverage for a 21-year-old making $18,000 a year. That proved to be a turnoff for some students scrambling to make ends meet. A new handout highlights a higher-deductible “Bronze Plan” that would cost the same 21year-old as little as $14 a month. Dale said. “It’s like we’re on a vacation, permanently.” For the Dales, there’s no turning back anytime soon. They’re leaning toward spending the winter along the Mississippi coast but hadn’t lined up jobs yet. They expect to be in Wisconsin next summer, working at a campground, followed by a stay in North Dakota for the sugar beet harvest. The Dales plan to take turns working full time, while the other stays with the children and home schools their 7-year-old son. The unconventional lifestyle has appealed to retirees and empty nesters eager to downsize and sightsee while picking up odd jobs along the way. Younger couples and families with children are joining the ranks of those willing to shuck the status quo for the lure of the road. Some still have homes in towns they left, connecting them to their old lives. Others packed up from rentals they’ll likely never call home again. “You have to not be attached to a lot of stuff,” said Trampas Jones, 34, who is embracing the lifestyle with his 41-year-old wife, Heather. “You really have to learn to pare down.” They’re hoping to land winter jobs as gate guards at a Texas oilfield while living in their motorhome. Many transient workers land temporary jobs at resorts, campgrounds, theme parks and state and national parks. The workers and employers looking to hire them can go online to match up. For some workers, the wages pay for their fun. Others rely on the salaries to cover necessities. For all, though, it satisfies a yearning for wanderlust and adventure. “There’s so much out there to see,” said Gayle Kerch, who travels the country with her husband, Jim, and their two dogs in their RV. “It’s just so vast. I can’t imagine staying in one spot and not going and seeing the country.” The influx of work campers is felt across the communities, with more people eating in local restaurants and buying groceries and fuel. Entertainment venues can also benefit; the Dales, for example, have a bowling night each week. “It does bring a boost to the local economy,” said Sandy Jenner, executive director of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce in Nevada. As an incentive, Amazon pays camping fees for the seasonal workers who start arriving in early fall. The migration has provided a windfall for campgrounds near Campbellsville. Amazon seasonal workers were occupying all 82 campsites at Green River Stables, an RV campground and horse camp.

A federal judge in September ruled marine fisheries officials did not consider the best available data when it approved permits last year for operations stretching from Northern California to the Canadian border. The agency has until August to reassess how it will protect ocean life. The California Coastal Commission also rejected the Navy’s five-year plan for exercises that would start in January off Southern California. However, the state agency does not have the power to block the drills and the Navy has ignored the agency’s requested protections in the past. The Navy estimates that its activities could inadvertently kill 186 whales and dolphins off the East Coast and 155 off Hawaii and Southern California, mostly from explosives. It calculates more than 11,000 serious injuries off the East Coast and 2,000 off Hawaii and Southern California, along with nearly 2 million minor injuries, such as temporary hearing loss, off each coast. It also predicts marine mammals might change their behavior — such as swimming in a different direction — in 27 million instances. Navy officials said they considered the latest research available, including the two recent studies, but none proves the activities cause significant harm to the marine populations. Navy spokesman Kenneth Hess emphasized that the studies published this summer
involved a small group of animals and some did not react, indicating the sound’s distance and other context may play a role. The Navy uses simulators where possible. “Overall, the activities we propose are very similar to the training and testing we have done in these areas for the past 60 years, and we have not seen major impacts on marine mammals from these activities,” Hess said. Until now, studies have measured animals’ response based on recordings similar to military sonar or depended on the tagging of marine mammals during Navy at-sea training in which scientists could not control the distance or intensity. For the first time, researchers coordinating with the Navy are conducting experiments using mid-frequency active sonar transmissions from ships. This past summer, they tagged six whales and dolphins off the Southern California coast. Those results are still being analyzed. Marine fisheries officials last month granted the Navy its permit for activities in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, on the condition that the military review the latest science yearly. The Navy must cease exercises if mammals are spotted nearby, and establish a response plan to a mass stranding. A decision on the Pacific permit is expected to be announced this month. Some scientists want the Navy to create safety zones that would guarantee no highintensity sonar activity near marine sanctuaries and areas with a high concentration of blue, fin and gray whales seasonally. “There are the ocean equivalent of deserts where sonar exercises could be conducted which would be vastly safer,” said Lindy Weilgart, a biologist at Dalhousie University in Canada who doesn’t receive any Navy funding.

This aces the success of his Oscarwinning film “Silver Linings Playbook,” which saw $27,687 during its opening weekend in December of 2012. “American Hustle,” featuring stellar performances by Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, has been nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. The overall gross of this weekend’s ticket sales is expected to surpass the $136.5 million gained the same weekend last year. “All films this weekend should estimate $145 million,” said Dergarabedian. With only a few weeks left in the year for moviegoers to populate the multiplex, the wide selection of impressive films fares well for eclipsing 2012’s box office record of $10.8 billion. “We are half a percent above last year,” added Dergarabedian. “And we have a really strong crop of films with some notable titles still yet to open in wide release, like ‘Anchorman 2,’ ‘American Hustle’ and ‘Saving Mr. Banks,’ among others.”

SOLUTIONS TO YESTERDAY’S PUZZLE
There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing.
