FINE ARTS SYMPHONIC ENSEMBLE SMCA students earned TAPPS 5A State Runner-Up Honors for 2011. Students also succeeded as the only school to receive 100% Division I ratings in all categories including: Full Orchestra, Jazz, Small Ensembles and Solos. Additionally, nine students earned All Region Honors in the public school ATSSB Symphonic, Concert and Jazz Band. Two students advanced to the Area Competition; one student made 1st Chair Flute All State ATSSB; and two students made All State TPSMEA Symphonic and Jazz Bands. The Crusader Marching Band also had the opportunity to perform at the Annual Operation Blue Santa Parade in Austin during Thanksgiving.
VISUAL ARTS •
SMCA students placed 1st in District TAPPS Competition.

Art students participated in worldwide art program, the Memory Project, creating portraits for disadvantaged children.

Sixteen students’ works of art placed at State TAPPS competition with one student receiving the State Champion award.
•
Students participated in scholarship competition and exhibition at Treaty Oak Bank.
•
Visual Art students presented work in an exhibit in the Campus Center at the end of the year.
DRAMA The 2010-2011 school year began with our Fall Play, Nikolai Gogol’s The Government Inspector, a satire on government corruption and hypocrisy. There were thirty-nine students who participated both on stage and behind the scenes. Competitions included: The Varsity Drama team participated in eleven Texas Forensic Association (TFA) qualifying tournaments. A SMCA Varsity Drama student, Deborah Corpening (‘11), became our first TFA State Champion in Poetry Reading. A Duo Interpretation team, a Duet Acting team, and a Prose Interpretation competitor reached the TFA State semi-finals. The Varsity Drama students also competed in the TAPPS State Academic contest where they collected two individual state championships and two runner-up awards. Two Varsity Drama students, James Boone (‘11) & Deborah Corpening (‘11), qualified for, and competed at the National Forensic League National Tournament, another first for the Varsity Drama Team. The Varsity Drama Team also presented their annual showcase performance. Productions for the year included: • The Drama II/III class presented the holiday play, The Gift of the Magi. • The Drama Club hosted the annual school-wide talent showcase. • The Drama II/III classes presented their annual spring production, a comedy: The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon. • The year ended with our Spring Musical, Bye Bye Birdie which included thirty-two students who were on stage or behind the scenes.

FAITH LIFE SENIOR LEADERSHIP The Campus Ministry department excitedly inaugurated the first Senior Retreat Team which consisted of 15 seniors who worked closely with the Campus Minister to develop and implement the underclassmen retreats.
KAIROS The Kairos retreat program for seniors continued to thrive as we had a record number of attendees for this four-day optional Christian awakening retreat. Attendance included many faculty and staff members as well as senior Kairos leaders who shared generosity, spirituality, and time as they led small groups and gave talks on how to gain greater spiritual awareness. SMCA was excited to be instrumental in bringing a wonderful program to the Diocese of Austin: Catholic Heart Work Camp. In July, we were the host site to over 220 high school students from all over the country who participated in this week-long camp combining service work in the Austin community with Catholic spiritual programming. On the last day of the camp, we warmly welcomed Bishop Joe VĂ squez to our campus for the first time. The Service-Learning Program continued to develop as 10 students logged more than 100 service hours last year to receive the Mother Teresa Award for Service. We also added a monthly Saturday service outing. The student body raised a significant amount of money for earthquake relief in Haiti through Catholic Relief Services. We also provided over 200 Thanksgiving meals to less fortunate families through Catholic Charities.

ATHLETICS The 2010-2011 athletic season was exciting and successful for the St. Michael’s Crusaders. In the fall, Varsity Football won the District Championship and made it to the State Semi-Finals. The Lady Crusader Volleyball team also made the playoffs while the Cross Country women finished seventh and the men finished ninth at the State Meet. For winter sports, both men’s and women’s Soccer made it to the playoffs, along with the men’s and women’s Basketball teams. The men’s Swim team finished fifth at State and the women’s team finished ninth. In the spring, Baseball won Co-district Champions and made it to the Regional Finals. Softball finished second in District and went all the way to the State Tournament finishing 3rd. The men’s Lacrosse team went to the Regional Finals. The Track team was successful at State: the women’s team finished in third place and the men’s team placed tenth. St. Michael’s had 42 athletes receive All-State recognition and 27 athletes received Academic All-State, in recognition of their outstanding athletic and academic achievements. Additionally, ten athletes from the Class of 2011 went on to further their athletic careers by competing at the college level.
FACULTY/STAFF ACCOMPLISHMENTS During the NHS ceremony last fall, faculty and staff were recognized for milestone years of service to the St. Michael’s community. Faculty and staff recognized for completing five years of service were: Billy Austin, Holly Bayer, Becky Frost, Rae Harrison, Kami Land, Rev. James McDonough, and Brian Moreland. Recognized for fifteen years of service was Susan Kohagen. Paula Priour, Dean of Studies, was recognized for 20 years of service to SMCA.

ALUMNI At the Homecoming game halftime, Jamie Schanbaum, Class of 2007, was honored as the Alumni of the Year. This special award is given each year to an SMCA graduate who is “Living the Mission” of St. Michael’s through demonstrated leadership, service and decision-making that is consistent with Catholic values. ENDOWMENT St. Michael’s $1.2 million endowment provides a source of financial support for fulfillment of the School’s mission of teaching and learning. An endowment is money contributed to the school from a donor which is then invested by the school. Investment earnings from the endowment are then used for scholarships and other initiatives. If you are interested in creating a legacy that will benefit St. Michael’s for years to come, consider endowments.

ANNUAL APPEAL St. Michael’s Catholic Academy is a unique school. The small classes, highly educated teachers and extracurricular/curricular programs depend on the Annual Appeal to keep SMCA exceptional. Similar to other schools, tuition alone does not fully cover the cost of educating our students. The school moderates tuition increases allowing St. Michael’s education to remain competitive and affordable. Tuition, together with a successful Annual Appeal, allows St. Michael’s to maintain operations. The 2010-2011 Annual Appeal Campaign Mind the Gap was a huge success! With the generous support of the St. Michael’s Community, we were able to raise over $203,000! A big thanks to our Campaign Co-Chairs, David and DeeAnn Smith and our Annual Appeal Committee. Thank you again to our generous donors and volunteers that helped to ensure this year’s success!

CRUSADER CLASSIC The tournament was held at the beautiful Falconhead Golf Club on Sunday, November 2010. Participants had the opportunity to renew old friendships and raise money to support the future of St. Michael’s Catholic Academy. This day of fun and fellowship helped raise necessary funds to support the mission of the School and the ongoing needs of the students. Thanks to the SMCA community we were able to raise over $28,000! The event was successful because of the support of all the fabulous golfers, sponsors and golf committee members! GRANDPARENTS’ DAY The second annual Grandparents’ and Grand Friends’ Day was celebrated on November 1, 2010. Grandparents and students enjoyed the celebration of Mass followed by lunch and pictures taken with students. This was a great opportunity for grandparents to experience life at St. Michael’s and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren. We look forward to strengthening and broadening our community even further next year.
ST. MICHAEL’S ANNUAL GALA “JOIN THE JOURNEY” Thanks to an entire committee’s time and talent, this year’s the gala was extremely successful. Led by Pam Bernhardt and Diann Watson, the Gala was held at Austin Country Club on Saturday, February 26th. The evening included dinner, drinks, and a live and silent auction. After the program guests enjoyed dancing the night away with Blue Finger Disco. Thanks to the dedication of this year’s co-chairs, the generous SMCA community and the time and talent of this year’s gala committee, we were able to raise over $207,000! Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a huge success!

PERSONAL PROPERTY Art, antiques, jewelry, and rare books are examples of gifts of personal property that are deductible for income tax purposes at their fair market value.
REAL ESTATE Gifts of real estate usually allow the avoidance of the capital gains tax and provide a charitable deduction. Lifetime occupancy of a donated residence may be retained.
SECURITIES Appreciated stocks or bonds can be donated to St. Michael’s and may be deducted for income tax purposes at full, fair market value on the date of transfer with no significant capital gains liability.
UNITED WAY You can make contributions to any 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization of your choice through United Way. Ask your United Way representative how to designate St. Michael’s Catholic Academy as the recipient of your United Way contribution.
PLANNED GIVING: Planned giving may be defined as a method of supporting a nonprofit that enables donors to make gifts larger than they could make from their regular income. While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to plan for charitable giving in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor’s estate. Whether a donor uses appreciated securities/stock, real estate, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance, a retirement plan, trusts, or an annuity, the benefits of a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very attractive to both the donor and the nonprofit. By contrast, gifts to the annual fund are generally made from a donor’s discretionary income, and while they may be budgeted for, they are not considered planned giving. One donor who understood the value of maximizing a planned gift was Monsignor Richard McCabe. Monsignor McCabe worked with the founding members of the school to create St. Michael’s Catholic Academy, and was widely considered a beloved friend of the school. At the time of his passing, Monsignor designated St. Michael’s as the beneficiary of a $100,000 life insurance policy. By only paying a small amount for the policy, he was able to make a significant gift in the form of an endowed scholarship to help minority students with a financial need attend St. Michael’s. Monsignor McCabe’s planned gift will ensure his legacy at the school will live on in perpetuity as an endowed scholarship for generations of students.
