In its quest to get the first fully electric plane certified for commercial use in Canada, Vancouver-based Harbour Air is closing in on 30 test flights performed to evaluate take-off, climb, cruise, range and endurance performance of its e-plane. Harbour Air has submitted some of the project’s preliminary documentation to Transport Canada and is working on an agreement with department officials on the best way to obtain certification of the aircraft’s electric conversion. Along with strategic partners Washington-based Magnix and Swiss-based H55, Harbour Air has completed its Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and made the decision to move forward with a magni350 EPU (electric propulsion unit) for the certifica-

Following the lifting of the Government of Canada’s restrictions on non-stop flights from India, Air Canada has resumed its flights to and from Delhi, with service from its Vancouver and Toronto hubs. Kevonnie Whyte, recipient of the 2021 Mary B. Jordan Scholarship for Women in Business In Kevonnie Whyte’s eight years of residence in Vancouver, she has become deeply committed to the city’s Black community and through her passion for inclusion and community building is making a positive impact on the city, overall. Those are some of the many reasons that Whyte was chosen as the 2021/2022 recipient of the Mary B. Jordan Scholarship for Women in Business. The scholarship, which was created in 2019 to support women pursuing business studies, was

established in recognition of Mary B. Jordan, a former YVR Chair of the Board of Directors, and her significant contributions to the airport community. Whyte first moved to Canada from Jamaica. Since then, she has worked on the City of Vancouver’s Racial and Ethnocultural Equity Advisory Committee, served on the Sauder Professional MBA Student Executive and hosted Equity Inclusion and Justice conferences with Stratagem, a virtual conference and digital

resource hub on equity, inclusion and justice. Whyte has also served as director of community outreach for an ad hoc mutual aid fund organized by Black Mutual Aid BC, which distributed micro grants to more than 500 members of B.C.’s Black community during the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, the fund distributed $200,000. Whyte is currently pursuing an MBA at the University of British Columbia, which she hopes to use in a career that

Approximately 8,000 unexpected passengers landed at YVR on Sept. 11, 2001, as all civilian aircraft in North America were grounded for three days.

On September 11, 2001, the world looked on with shock, at events that would have a profound and lasting impact on the aviation industry and the entire world unfolded in New York and across the United States. Everyone remembers where they were that day, but the people who were at YVR can tell incredible stories of how they stepped up as an airport community to welcome the world and help keep the community safe. Even though it is now 20 years later, the people who were at the airport that day recall how things unfolded at YVR with surprising clarity. They can remember the exact words spoken on the first phone call they received telling them the shocking news. They can share minute-to-minute experiences of how the airport and its partners responded to the ever-changing, fast-moving series of events. And they can tell detailed stories about all the ways in which they worked together that day and the following days

to help keep the community safe and make travellers, who were forced to land at YVR because of the closure of airspace to civilian air traffic, feel welcome. And YVR didn’t do it alone. More than 50 organizations across the airport community came together to support one another that day, including airlines, cruise lines, security agencies and even grocery stores. “Every Child Matters,” the official tagline of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, reminds Canadians that all peoples’ cultural experiences are important.

On Sept. 30, 2021, Canada marked its first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday to honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30. The orange shirt relates to the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap), who on her first day of school arrived in a new orange shirt, which was taken from her. It is now a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. On September 27, Vancouver Airport Authority CEO Tamara Vrooman was joined by Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow and members of the community, who gathered outside the International Terminal on

the traditional, unceded territory of the Musqueam people for a moment of silence and the lighting of YVR's Control Tower in orange. The Control Tower continued to be lit orange each night until October 4 in commemoration of residential school survivors and to mourn the discoveries of unmarked graves of children who died or went missing from residential schools. Vancouver Airport Authority has committed to share resources and identify ways to strength-

en its work and partnership with Musqueam. This includes the signing of the Musqueam Indian Band-YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement, a 30-year partnership based on friendship and respect to achieve a sustainable and mutually beneficial future for the community and the lands on which YVR operates. Among other things, the Agreement includes scholarships, employment opportunities and protection of archaeological resources.

A significant number of YVR’s laid-off employees were rehired to help Vancouver Coastal Health operate the mass vaccination site at the River Rock Casino during the COVID19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 vaccination roll-out has been one of the most important priorities for the airport community and the country and with the help of Vancouver Coastal Health, YVR was able to assist in the delivery of a one-stop solution for managing the non-clinical administration of a mass vaccination centre. This site helped the province vaccinate British Columbians quickly, in order to support a faster recovery for the community and travel industry. On day one, the clinic at the River Rock site vaccinated 280 people aged 80-plus. When vaccine access started to open-up to all ages, the clinic supported between 1,200 -1,600 people in getting their vaccinations each day. To date, more than

160,000 vaccinations have been administered. These numbers were achieved as result of a team effort, which from start to finish had a positive impact on the community. As the vaccination operation at the site comes to an end, Vancouver Airport Authority extends thanks to the hundreds of workers and YVR employees whose selfless efforts and exceptional customer service provided a safe and welcoming environment for those seeking a vaccine. As air travel continues to reopen, the airport community can be proud of the part it has played in the efforts to help the province and the airport continue to rebound and rebuild as safely as possible.

Mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for federal workers and transportation employees Transport Minister Omar Alghabra has stated that the Canadian Government will require employees in the federally regulated air, rail, and marine transportation sectors to be vaccinated no later than the end of October 2021. This includes travellers on commercial airlines, interprovincial trains and cruise ships, who will also be required to be vaccinated by that date. Employees in the federal public service were required to be vaccinated by the end of September 2021. Alternative measures, such as testing and screening, will be implemented for those federal employees who are unable to be vaccinated because of health conditions. “The Government of Canada is leading by example in requiring vaccinations for public service employees, and we are asking all federally regulated employers to develop vaccine plans to ensure their employees and workplaces are safe,” said Minister Alghabra. “This is the right thing to do and will ensure Canada continues to build back better from the global COVID-19 pandemic.” There are approximately 18,500 employ-

ers in federally regulated industries, including federal Crown corporations that together employ 955,000 employees, or 6.2 per cent of the Canada workforce. When added to the federal public service, there are approximately 19,000 employers and 1,235,000 employees (8 per cent of all workers in Canada). Canada’s major airlines, have also put their own employee vaccination policies in place, requiring current and new hires to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

A survey, commissioned by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) IATA of 4,700 respondents in 11 markets in September 2021, revealed confidence that the risks of COVID19 can be effectively managed and that the freedom to travel should be restored: • 67% of respondents felt that most countries’ border should be opened now, up 12 percentage points from a June 2021 survey • 64% of respondents felt that border closures are unnecessary and have not been effec-

tive in containing the virus (up 11 percentage points from June 2021) • 73% responded that their quality of life is suffering as a result of COVID-19 travel restrictions (up 6 percentage points from June 2021) “People are increasingly frustrated with the COVID19 travel restrictions and even more have seen their quality of life suffer as a result,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s director general. “They don’t see the necessity of travel restrictions to control the virus. And they have missed too many family moments, personal development opportunities and business priorities. In short, they miss the freedom of flying and want it restored. The message they are sending to governments is: COVID-19 is not going to disappear, so we must establish a way to manage its risks while living and travelling normally.” Support grows for testing or vaccination to replace quarantine The biggest deterrent to air travel continues to be quarantine measures. Eighty-four per cent of respondents indicated that they will not travel if there is a chance of quarantine at their destination. A growing proportion of respondents support the removal of quarantine if: • A person has tested negative for COVID-19 (73% in September compared to 67% in June) • A person has been vaccinated (71% in September compared to 68% in June) With vaccination rates globally increasing, 80% of respondents agree that vaccinated people should be able to travel freely by air. However, there were strong views against making vaccination a condition for air travel. About two-thirds felt it is morally wrong to restrict travel only to those who have been vaccinated. More than 80% of respondents believe that testing before air travel should be an alternative for people without access to vaccination. While 85% are willing to be tested if required in the travel process, several issues remain: • 75% of respondents indicated

that the cost of testing is a significant barrier to travel • 80% believe that governments should bear the cost of testing • 77% see the inconvenience of testing as a barrier to travel “There is a message here for governments,” said Walsh. “People are willing to be tested to travel. But they don’t like the cost or the inconvenience. Both can be addressed by governments. The reliability of rapid antigen tests is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). Broader acceptance of antigen testing by governments would reduce inconvenience and cost—costs that the WHO’s International Health Regulations stipulate should be borne by governments. It is also clear that while people accept testing and other measures such as mask-wearing as necessary, they want to return to more normal ways of travel when it is safe to do so.” High confidence with travel experiences; Among those who have travelled since June 2020, 86% felt safe on board the flight as a result of the airline’s COVID-19 measures: • 87% believed protective measures are well implemented • 88% felt airline personnel are doing a good job in enforcing COVID-19 rules There was also strong support for wearing masks, with 87% of respondents agreeing that doing so will prevent the spread of COVID-19. With more markets starting to open to travel, an area that needs to be addressed is the COVID-related travel rules and requirements: • 73% of those who have travelled since June 2020 found it challenging to understand what rules applied for a trip (up from 70% in June) • 73% felt the COVID-19 paperwork was challenging to arrange (also up from 70% in June) The 11 markets covered in the survey were: Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore, UAE, UK, and the United States.

Air New Zealand introducing ‘no jab, no fly’ for international travellers

Air New Zealand is asking customers to get ready for international travel by getting vaccinated. From Feb. 1, 2022, the airline

will require customers travelling anywhere on its international network to be fully vaccinated. “We’re getting ready to reconnect with the world and

According to an Air New Zealand official, switching to more sustainable serviceware options has the potential to remove approximately 28 million, single-use plastic dishes, knives, forks and spoons that are used inflight each year.

The quicker we get vaccinated, the sooner we can fly Kiwis to places like New York, Vancouver and Narita.” This traveller vaccination requirement will sit alongside the measures the airline already has adopted to keep New Zealand safe. “It’s not just customers who will be required to be vaccinated—it’s everyone on board an Air New Zealand aircraft travelling internationally, adding to the

health and safety measures we already have in place. Another tool in our toolbox,” said Foran. Air New Zealand’s vaccination requirement will apply to all passengers aged 18 and older arriving or departing Aotearoa on an Air New Zealand aircraft. Customers who are not vaccinated will be required to present proof that vaccination was not a viable option for them for medical reasons. The airline will use Timatic, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Travel Pass, to check customers’ health information against flight details to ensure they are meeting entry requirements for that destination, and the airline. The IATA Travel Pass app is based on decentralized technology, which means there is no

central database holding passenger information. Passengers have complete discretion as to whether they share their data or not and they can delete their data at any

Top 5 plane-spotting locations at YVR One of the top questions YVR staff always receives from the community is, “Where can we go to spot airplanes?” Much like birdwatching, plane spotting is a hobby that many people enjoy and as air travel reopens and more aircraft arrive and depart at YVR, the quest for the best plane-spotting locations ramps up. With that in mind, the YVR team has decided to share their top five plane-spotting locations at or near YVR. First, a quick lesson on runway names: The South Runway houses runways 08R and 26L and the North Runway houses runways 08L and 26R. If planes are landing on the 08s that means they’re coming from over the water. If they’re taking off on the 26s that means they’re taking off over the water. 1 Larry Berg Flight Path Park Located at the end of runway 26L, the Flight Path Park is the prime location for plane spotting and family picnics. This park also features a giant globe play area and tail wings display explaining how YVR became known as one of the best airports in the world. WestJet appoints Harry Taylor as interim president & CEO With the announced retirement of WestJet’s current CEO Ed Sims, the airline has named Harry Taylor as interim president and chief executive officer (CEO), with a transition period taking place between late November and mid-December 2021. A group of pilots who took to the skies to raise funds for Hope Air, a national charity providing free travel and accommodations for Canadians in financial need who must travel far from home for vital medical care, has surpassed its original fundraising goal by more than $20,000. The Give Hope Wings expedition raised $422,385 to provide 1,689 flights for patients in need and created awareness for patients who need help. The pilots and volunteers made stops in Western Canada between

August 23 and September 3 to raise the funds. This was the fourth annual Give Hope Wings expedition, with stops made in Western Canada between August 23 and September 3. The Hope expedition team visited Nelson, BC.; Drumheller, Alberta; Saskatoon and Yorkton, Saskatchewan; and Churchill, Manitoba. Pilots volunteered their time for the expedition, making route adjustments along the way because of weather, smoke from fires, and evolving local COVID19 restrictions. As Hope Air celebrates this monumental achievement by its volunteers, it is still aiming to raise an additional $1.5 million in 2021 to continue to help patients across the country. Crank up the heater and wait for the defroster to allow clear visibility before setting off. • If you get stuck in a storm, stay in your vehicle, open the windows slightly for fresh air and monitor the situation on your fully charged cell phone. Richmond Street Banner Contest now open for public voting The public can now have their say on 20 shortlisted designs for the Richmond Street Banner Program. The broad range of colourful designs can be viewed at LetsTalkRichmond.ca and people can vote for their favourite banner. Designs can also be viewed from the City’s website (richmond. ca/banners) and votes can be cast by emailing parksprograms@richmond.ca. All votes must be cast by 11:59pm on Sunday, October 17. A community volunteer judging panel viewed more than 500 submissions and narrowed them down to the 20 finalists. Artwork, graphic design and photographs were all included in the submissions, which reflected the following 10 themes representing the City of Richmond’s distinct charm: Innovation; Community; Connection; Wildlife; Active Living; Urban Landscape; Nature; Island City; The Arts and Sustainability. Richmond adopts bylaw to ban single-use plastic To help reduce unnecessary waste and plastic pollution, Richmond Council recently adopted a Single-Use Plastic and Other Items Bylaw. The Bylaw will ban the use of foam food service ware, plastic straws and plastic checkout bags starting March 27, 2022. The new ban affects all businesses operating in Richmond and is consistent with bylaws in other communities, as well as regulations being developed by the federal and provincial governments. “It is crucial that we address single-use plastics as a significant cause of environmental damage in our oceans, local waterways and other natural areas by reducing this type of unnecessary waste as we support a more sustainable, circular economy,” said Malcolm Brodie, Mayor of Richmond. “Richmond is a recognized leader in sustainability, and we look forward to working with our local businesses and consumers to transition away from single-use plastics to more acceptable alternatives.” To provide businesses with time to expend stock and transition to acceptable alternatives, there is a six-month period before the Bylaw comes into effect, and then another six months before it will be enforced in September 2022. Based on feedback from the community, the city is providing resources to support local busi-

nesses, such as a toolkit to help prepare for the ban, and pointof-sale materials to inform customers. That feedback involved workshops with Richmond businesses, meetings with local business organizations and an online community survey. A second round of business workshops were also held in August and September. It is estimated that about 35-million foam food-service containers, plastic straws and plastic checkout bags are collected in the garbage in Richmond every year. That is almost 660 tonnes that the City aims to remove from landfills. It is estimated that 29,000 tonnes of plastic pollution enter the environment across Canada each year. On a global scale, at least eight-million tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean each year, which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute. Since plastic degrades slowly and is persistent in the environment, the amount of plastic pollution is anticipated to continue to increase over time, which makes the issue a local, national and global problem that requires a unified plan to combat. As an airline ground service provider, we must maintain our ground service equipment in good, reliable condition to meet the operational needs of our airline customers. We are seeking a Ground Service Equipment (GSE) Mechanic to perform regular maintenance and repairs on a wide range of vehicles and equipment in our organization. The position is based at the maintenance hangar, South Terminal close to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and will involve working collaboratively with our airport teams and station vendors, under the direction of the Base Manager, to perform a variety of tasks throughout our network to ensure that ground service equipment is kept in optimal condition. With safety and quality of workmanship always considered a priority. We are currently looking to find the right person to join our team as the United Ramp Inc., Prince Rupert Airport Base Operations Manager. YOUR ROLE: As a people leader, the URI Operations Manager directs all facets of station operations and station employees and establishes priorities of all customer-service functions, including ticketing, baggage handling, cargo operations (weight and balance), passenger security and reservations in a manner that ensures compliance with company service standards. Additionally, you will be expected to manage human resources, communicate priorities, motivate staff and create an environment that promotes teamwork. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Lead team and establishes priorities of all customer-service functions at the station, including ticketing, baggage handling, cargo operations (weight and balance), passenger security and reservations, in a manner that ensures compliance with customer & company service standards • Manage work group to meet pre-established on-time goals and minimum accepted performance goals • Manage all vendors, shareholders, and all related Prince Rupert contracts • Manage operations schedules, staffing schedules & all necessary training, to ensure exceptional service is provided for each customer’s needs • Implement customer service procedural process changes for each client’s service requirements • Represent United Ramp in the community through public relations activities • Oversee all station and customer resources, such as facilities, equipment & supplies • Develop people through effective performance management & ongoing feedback—focusing on delegation for stretch assignments, team growth & development, and time management • Supervise labour contracts & review & relay all schedule changes to all departments • Measure and report daily performance to the Director. • Ensure compliance with company policies and all federal, provincial, and local airport authorities’ regulations • Ensure all administrative reports, payroll and shift scheduling is kept current and sent in within the required timelines • Manage and approve Payables, ensure Receivables’ reports are fully completed and all financial documents are sent in as they occur QUALIFICATIONS: • A minimum of 5 years experience in guest services preferred • A minimum of 2 years leadership or management experience • Bachelor’s degree, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree, an asset • Budget management experience an asset • Analytical, with strong decision-making skills and the ability to problem-solve • Willingness and ability to instruct and train staff • Detailed oriented and highly organized, with ability to multi-task and work independently with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment • Proven ability to motivate employees and improve and enhance group dynamics • Proven ability to use tact in communicating with others and able to constructively resolve problems • Strong communication (e.g., verbal, written, and listening) and presentation skills • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) • High school diploma or equivalent is required • Able to successfully pass a Criminal Records Check • Experience in station operations, passenger service, cargo handling, or ground operations • Knowledge of scheduling shift work, administering bargaining unit employees and budget controls • Experience managing large work groups • Knowledge of Air Canada System Regulations and FAA policies and procedures • Job-specific Leadership Expectations • Embody the company’s values: to own safety, do the right thing, be kind-hearted, deliver performance and be remarkable.
