As YVR marks the fifth anniversary of the signing of its Sustainability and Friendship Agreement with the Musqueam First Nations band, important cultural work continues to take place between them. On July 19, YVR came together with the Musqueam Indian Band and members of the Gitxsan Nation to raise a Musqueam welcome figure in Chester Johnson Park, near the International Arrivals area. In doing so, three traditional Gitxsan poles were relocated to a neighbouring park. The Gitxsan poles were created in 1970 by the late Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs, Chief Delgamuukw (Earl Muldon) and Chief Simogyet Geel (Walter Harris). They carved the poles with a group of students from the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art, situated in the historic village of K’san.

While YVR has had the honour and privilege of holding the title of Best Airport in North America for a record 12 years in a row, this year it was time for congratulations to be extended to another deserving airport—B.C.’s neighbour to the south, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Aligning Musqueam cultural protocol on Sea Island

WestJet has extended a partner ship with MedAire, an International SOS company that provides emer gency medical assistance to cabin personnel during in-flight medical events. As the first airline in North America to fully leverage the MedAire In-Flight App, WestJet cabin personnel now have multiple ways to connect with MedLink doc tors during a medical emergency.

The K’san poles, as they have come to be known, have been on loan to YVR from the Museum of Vancouver since 1995.The Musqueam are the original stewards of YVR’s Sea Island location, making it essential that Indigenous works of art at the airport reflect their culture and tradition. The newly raised welcome figure, carved by (Musqueam artist Brent Sparrow), is posi tioned to greet millions of travellers and visitors to the airport and Musqueam territory, aligning with cultural protocol and strengthening YVR’s unique sense of YVRplace.continues to provide a platform for the Sea Island community to connect, thrive and continue the reconciliation process with the Musqueam. Raising the Musqueam welcome figure and repositioning the Gitxsan Nation artworks is a significant step forward in that reconciliation journey.

“The first fifteen minutes of a medical incident are the most critical to administer care, and through our efforts to prioritize safety above all, we are com mitted to providing our cabin crew with the best tools possible to assist our guests in the event of an emergency situation,” said Dr. Tammy McKnight, WestJet Chief Medical Officer. “Through the efforts of our operational teams, the deployment of the MedAire In-Flight App will reduce the amount of time it takes to con nect with a first responder and greatly improve the likelihood of a positive outcome.”Bycombining technology with decades of expertise, AI assistance and text-based communication tools, WestJet cabin personnel will have frictionless access to the world’s leading emergency medical physicians to ensure unwell pas sengers receive timely, accurate medical support.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has gone digital with its Departures level curb signs to enhance airline flex ibility and check-in counter resources at its Main Terminal. This digital change means the static text portion of the curb signs on Departures Level 3 will only display the text “Departures / Départs.”Instead of text, pictograms of a Canadian flag, U.S. flag, or globe for domestic, U.S., or international-departing flights are used to identify Canada, U.S. & International sectors. The pictograms will allow schedulers to move airlines to any check-in counter and also enable airlines to consolidate their check-in operations, as needed, across sectors.

The #emptyboxchallenge, which began in the Lower Mainland by Mikaela Taylor earlier in the year, was quickly identified as an excellent opportunity to activate the YVR community in coming together to affect real change.

In addition to providing the space and installation costs of the mural, YVR gave Vancouver Pride Society a financial con tribution, which helped in the cost of the mural’s design and was also used to support an interminal Pride parade hosted by Fairmont Vancouver Airport on JulyThe20. parade, which stretched the length of the terminal, was led by Kendall Gender, a Fairmont Hotel ambassador who also worked with YVR and Vancouver Pride Society to bring Drag Deliveries to the airport.

Donations for the #emptyboxchallenge to help displaced Ukrainians were dropped off curbside at YVR’s Graham Clarke Atrium.

Drag Deliveries is one of Pride Society’s annual programs, where local drag performers test the public’s pride knowledge and give away great swag.

The artwork, designed by local artist, Lindsey McEwan, spans from the YVR Airport platform to the terminal. YVR worked with Vancouver Pride Society cre atively and administratively on the art piece, which animates the space and shows support through being an airport which welcomes all. “My aim was to include as many of the [more than 32+] pride flags as possible, each representing queer com munities around the world,” said McEwan. “I placed them in a way that demonstrated how intertwined we are while keeping the integrity of each flag used. The massive space and glass substrate allowed me to realize an archetype of stained-glass windows that honour and respect all queer communities together with pride.“My name is Lindsey, I am a transgender, panromantic woman, and I am thankful I was given the opportunity to do this.”

John Rennie (left), in his late father’s (Captain Jack Rennie) flight suit, fastens the last piece of the restoration to his father’s memorial bench at YVR.

Recently, YVR’s mainte nance team noted that some of the memorial benches along the river dyke on the airport’s south side showed signs of wear. As the team began reaching out to the families about YVR’s planned restoration of these per sonalized memorials, the group quickly learned that they were more than just benches. One of the stories learned from these conversations with the families about the memorial bench restoration project was that of a retired Canadian Pacific Airlines (CPA) pilot, Captain JackRennieRennie.began his career as an airplane mechanic in 1938. He later became a bush pilot and found himself stranded in the extreme north with his flight crew on several occasions. On one such occasion, their plane caught on fire while flying to the Eldorado Mine in the Northwest Territories. Thankfully, Rennie and his crew managed to escape before the ammunition they were transporting exploded. They survived for nine days in brutal weather conditions of minus40-degree to minus-50-degree centigrade before being rescued. Rennie later flew for CPA when Grant McConachie formed the airline in 1942, retiring in 1975. Rennie’s son, John, fondly recalled his father’s memories of his flight experiences and previous YVR development projects from 50 years ago—a reminder of the airport’s longlasting impact on individuals and communities.Johnaccepted the invitation to come to YVR and fasten the last piece of the restoration to his father’s memorial bench. He wore his father’s old flight suit and brought memorabilia from his shared stories. The memorial bench restora tion program at YVR provided a reminder that the airport serves more than its valued passengers and employees; it provides services to an entire community and the economy that supports it. Currently, YVR’s memorial bench program is not accepting new applications. whether

Over the years, Layne built a team of board members, associate chaplains and reception volunteers that in 1996 moved to a new Chapel facil ity in the International Arrivals Building.Layne became well known throughout the airport as a friend of employees and a helper to passengers, especially those arriving as refugee claimants, needing love and practical support.Hewas famous for carrying his ‘office’ (laptop computer) with him everywhere and run ning a beneficial Thrift Store near the terminal for more than 15 years.Inaddition, Layne founded his “Flying Without Fear” course that enabled hundreds of people to board planes successfully, many after years of great trepi dation about flying. After 30 years of exemplary service, Layne became VAC’s Chaplain Emeritus in 2013, entrust ing his cherished ministry to Rev. Dennis Kirkley. That year, Vancouver Airport Authority gave Layne a fantastic farewell party at which he received rousing accolades for all his contributions to the YVRMorecommunity.recently, the Airport Authority has agreed to honour Layne by dedicating a new post-security Prayer Room to his name and God-given vision. Layne Daggett was consid ered a “Man for all Seasons,” greatly loved and appreciated by all who knew him. Indeed, he shared his life of service to the fullest. His family is planning a celebration of life for the near future.

The MoU builds on Shell’s ambition to have at least 10 per cent of its global aviation fuel sales as SAF by 2030. SAF is aviation fuel pro duced without using fossil energy sources, such as crude oil or natural gas, and shows a saving of CO2 compared to conventional kerosene. Various production processes exist, and different feedstock is available as energy sources. The current generation of SAF, which saves 80 per cent CO2 compared to conventional kerosene, is mainly produced from biogenic residues, such as used cooking oils. In the long term, SAF can enable virtually CO2-neutral aviation.TheLufthansa Group has been involved in SAF research for many years, has built up an extensive network of partner ships and is driving forward the introduction of sustainable next-generation aviation fuels in particular. Special focus is on the forward-looking power-to-liquid and sun-to-liquid technologies, which use renewable energies or solar thermal energy as energy carriers.

Using SAF, customers of the Lufthansa Group can already fly CO2-neutral today. In addi tion, they can document their reduced CO2 emissions with audited certificates and have the CO2 savings credited to their CO2 account balance. By 2030, the company’s own net CO2 emissions are to be halved compared to 2019, and by 2050, the Lufthansa Group wants to achieve a neutral CO2 balance. The company relies on acceler ated fleet modernization, the continuous optimization of flight operations, sustainable aviation fuels and innovative offers for its customers to make a flight CO2 neutral. Shell and the Lufthansa Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for exploring the sup ply of SAF at airports across the globe. The parties intend to agree on a contract for a total supply volume of up to 1.8 mil lion metric tons of SAF starting in 2024, over seven years. Such an agreement would be one of the most significant commercial SAF cooperation in the aviation sector and the most significant SAF commitment of both companies to date. The cooperation would enable the Lufthansa Group to promote the availability, market ramp-up and use of SAF as an essential element for a CO2 neutral future of aviation. The Lufthansa Group is already the largest SAF customer in Europe and aims to remain one of the world’s leading airline groups using sustainable kerosene.
