2015-16 SEASON OUTLOOK The Saint Joseph’s women’s track and field squad returns 34 letterwinners – including two individual and eight relay record-holders – for the 2015-16 season. With the addition of 16 newcomers, first-year head coach Melody O’Reilly anticipates strong indoor and outdoor seasons for the Hawks as they begin their quest for high levels of success on both the A-10 and ECAC levels. “Coming off of the results from the fall and knowing what the crew is doing now, I can see why they’re confident in what they’re doing. I hope their confidence carries into the meets. I would love to see them pick up where they left off at the end of last year. That would be huge.” CAPTAINS Senior long sprinter Jenna DeAngelo, senior hurdler/long sprinter Dannah Hayward, senior sprinter Carly McGowan, and senior distance runners Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka will captain the Hawks this year. All five racers have demonstrated a commitment and dedication to the Saint Joseph’s women’s track and field program over the course of their first three years on Hawk Hill and have all scored at the conference level between individual and relay events, combining for 53 points. O’Reilly expects that taking the program to the next level will begin with her five senior captains.

SPRINTS Senior captain Carly McGowan will lead the short sprints again this season. McGowan turned in a season-best 60m (8.34) at Jack Pyrah last season and owned four of SJU’s top six times in the 200m, competing in the event at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets. “Of our track captains, Carly is our strongest leader,” said O’Reilly. “She has taken a young group of athletes and has shown them how to do the work,” added Meyers. Junior Carly Montgomery set all four of her sprint PRs last year between the 60m (8.30), 100m (12.92), 200m (26.08), and 300m (44.57) while sophomores Nia Dupiche (60m-500m), Alex Edger (60m-400m), Rose O’Brien (100m-300m), Steph Toland (300m), and Ariana Wilson will add to the short sprints. “The sprinters are on board with the work, which has included less volume and more intensity,” said O’Reilly. “They’ve been very receptive and look and feel stronger. There’s a really nice mix in that group, and they look great.” LONG SPRINTS The Hawks return two SJU record-holders in junior Courtney Foster (indoor 400m) and senior captain Dannah Hayward (indoor 500m) to the long sprints this season. Voted SJU’s Most Outstanding Performer as a sophomore, Foster led the Hawks in the indoor 200m (25.76), 300m (42.16), and 400m (56.48) and outdoor 100m (12.78), 200m (25.19), and 400m (56.49). Foster scored in the indoor 400m at A-10s and will once again be a main factor on SJU’s relays. “Courtney is going to be very dangerous on the track this year,” said O’Reilly. “She not a vocal person, but she knows what you wants to do,” added Meyers. Hayward, who will also lead the Hawks in the hurdles, scored in the indoor 500m at A-10s and went on to place 13th at the ECAC level in a season-best 1:14.99 last season. O’Reilly and Meyers added that juniors Ashley Gerald (200m-500m), who scored in the indoor 500m at A-10s, and Katie Koss (60m-500m) have looked good in the preseason and have been consistently strong in their workouts. The quintet of senior captain Jenna DeAngelo (2:23.43 PR), juniors Angelena Minniti (2:29.02 PR) and Kiersten Moylan (2:26.65 PR), and sophomores Caroline Keegan (2:20.79 PR) and Andrea Warren (2:37.87 PR) will focus primarily on the 800m and all set their collegiate-best times in the event last year. With the range of this group, O’Reilly expects these five Hawks to be able to race down to the 500m and up to the 1000m for the 2015-16 indoor and outdoor seasons.

2015-16 SEASON OUTLOOK “There is more volume and less intensity with the workouts with this group,” said O’Reilly. “They’re moving and they continue to get stronger.” HURDLES SJU’s school record-holder in the 400m hurdles (1:00.11), senior captain Dannah Hayward will lead a group of five returning hurdles this year. Hayward won 400H titles at the Monmouth Opener and Rider Invitational and placed second at the Colonial Relays last season and capped her outdoor campaign with a fourth-place finish at A-10s and a ninth-place finish at ECACs. Hayward also scored for the Hawks in the 400H on both the A-10 and ECAC levels in 2013. Emely Ramirez (60H, 100H) and Steph Toland (60H, 100H, 400H) also competed at the conference level last season. Ramirez turned in a collegiate-best 60H (9.20) and season-best 100H (16.21) while in her rookie season, Toland recorded times of 9.39 in the 60H, 16.04 in the 100H, and 1:05.26 in the 400H. Sophomores Rose O’Brien (10.05) and Ariana Wilson (9.35) also raced the 60H as rookies and will add depth to SJU’s hurdle group. DISTANCE/3000M STEEPLECHASE Seniors Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka return for their second seasons as distance captains to lead the squad’s biggest event group in 2015-16. “The biggest group will be the middle distance group and with this group, expansion is key,” said O’Reilly. “A lot of them have gotten comfortable in their events, and I’d like to make some moves in the distance events. I think we’re going to get to play around a bit this season and maybe find new places for people so that they can experience greater success than what they’ve had. I want them to open their horizons a bit.” Radzwilka turned in SJU’s best 800m (2:16.28) and 1000m (2:59.15) while Hehir checked in with SJU’s best mile (4:56.08) and 1500m (4:34.83) last season. Both Hawks scored at the 2015 A-10 Indoor Championships, with IC4A-qualifier Hehir placing sixth in the mile and Radzwilka earning eighth in the 800m. Coming off of breakthrough cross country seasons, O’Reilly also holds high expectations of juniors Sydney Coughlin and Sarah Regnault. Both competed at A-10s last season, with Regnault racing the indoor 1000m and both taking on the outdoor 1500m. “Both Sydney and Sarah had great fall seasons,” said O’Reilly. “That’s going to carry over very well.” Junior Alexandra Fiesel (800m-3k) and sophomores Megan O’Dowd (1500m) and Cassidy Weimer (800m-1500m) will add depth to SJU’s middle distance group.

Senior captain Dannah Hayward

SJU’s other two distance seniors, Emily Chaundy and Kathryn Cols, will lead the longer distance events. Chaundy turned in SJU’s fastest 3k (10:30.90) while Cols’ season-best 5k (18:31.50) led the squad. Chaundy (3k) and Cols (5k) raced their respective events at indoor A-10s last season while both, alongside junior June Chiango, represented the Hawks in the 5k on the outdoor conference level. Sophomore Alicia Ezekiel-Pipkin raced the A-10’s indoor 3k and could be expected to tackle the 10k this season. A scorer at last year’s outdoor A-10 meet, junior Julia Jenkins will return to the 3000m steeplechase this spring. The junior turned in a collegiate-best time of 11:26.69 to place seventh for the Hawks and is SJU’s only returner to have competed in the event last season. “Julia really wants to compete in the steeplechase and is excited about it,” said O’Reilly. “We have a group that really wants to focus on steeple, so it could be very exciting.” O’Reilly gave credit to the freshman class on the holistic impact it will have on the distance group. “The freshmen will have a huge impact on how these guys train,” said O’Reilly. “It’s going to make that group interesting. We’ve adopted the idea of ‘racing’ and not ‘running,’ so now I anticipate that mentality will carry through into the track season.”

2015-16 SEASON OUTLOOK RELAYS Last season, the Hawks destroyed two school records both the indoor and outdoor 4x400m relays. All eight of those legs return for the 2015-16 season. Last season, the Hawks turned in three top-16 finishes at the ECAC level, including an 11th-place showing in the indoor 4x400m relay. All 12 of those legs return for the 2015-16 season. Last season, the Hawks scored in four Atlantic 10 relays for 12 conference points, including a fourth-place finish in the outfoor 4x400m relay. Of those 16 legs, 13 return for the 2015-16 season. Junior Courtney Foster leads all returning Hawks with legs on six of the aforementioned relays, followed by senior captain Dannah Hayward and junior Katie Koss (5), junior Ashley Gerald (4), senior captains Lauren Hehir and Carly McGowan and junior Sydney Coughlin (3) and senior captain Sara Radzwilka and junior Sarah Regnault (2). SJU returns all four members of both the record-breaking indoor 4x400m relay (Koss, Gerald, Hayward, Foster) and outdoor 4x400m relay (Foster, Gerald, McGowan, Hayward).

JUMPS Back-to-back Atlantic 10 high jump silver medalist Claudine Andre returns for her second collegiate season in 2015-16. Andre hit a mark of 1.70m during both the indoor and outdoor seasons and added a sixth-place performance at the ECAC Outdoor Championships. Andre also turned in a fourth-place indoor finish and sixth-place outdoor finish in the long jump at the A-10 level and placed 16th at outdoor ECACs. “Claudine is coming back after a very successful freshman campaign,” said Meyers. “She looks like she’s in better shape than she was last year, if that’s even possible.” Junior high jumpers in Rachel Kline and Emely Ramirez have experience at the conference level. Kline reached a collegiate-best 1.66m at Yale’s Giegengack Invitational last season and went on to score (8th) for the Hawks at indoor A-10s while Ramirez set both indoor and outdoor PRs (1.60m) last season and capped her sophomore campaign with a ninth-place finish at outdoor A-10s. “Both Rachel and Emely seem to be very confident,” said Meyers. “Rachel’s workouts are going well and Emely is very smooth in everything she’s doing.”

THE HAWK

Teddy Meyers, a 2007 graduate and 12-time letterwinner of the Saint Joseph's men's cross country and track teams, enters his eighth season on Hawk Hill in 2015-16. In a newly-created position, Meyers will serve as the assistant coach of both the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams as well as the recruiting coordinator for both programs. Meyers will assist in all facets of the cross country programs and will work primarily with jumpers and sprinters during both men’s and women’s track and field seasons. The 2015-16 academic year will mark Meyers’ eighth with the men’s program and first with the women’s program. A standout student-athlete at SJU, Meyers built an impressive résumé of both athletic and academic accomplishments throughout his career on Hawk Hill. Meyers was a two-time Atlantic 10 AllConference cross country honoree and earned the A-10 5k title in both the 2006 indoor and outdoor track seasons. For his dedication in the classroom, Meyers was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track teams for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns. His six academic honors are the second most received by any track member at Saint Joseph's in program history. In May 2007, Meyers graduated from Saint Joseph's University with his bachelor's degree in economics. The Bethel Park, Pa. native also graduated from the MBA program at SJU's Haub School of Business in 2010. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 59 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

SWEENEY FIELD

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The pitch is the current home of the varsity men’s and women’s track and field, soccer and lacrosse teams. The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon completion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantly increased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccer programs. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field was blessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 while a formal dedication was held on April 5, 2014. The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanent seats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall as well as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side of the field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, the facility will includes a new state of the art press box and enhanced sound system. Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-seat football stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s original grandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction of Villiger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field has undergone a number of upgrades and enhancements designed to expand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurf artificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights, and bleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the

home venue for Hawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition to peripheral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along with countless club, intramural and recreational activities. Legend has it that a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site. Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T. Finnesey. A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of a local auto manufacturer, he was a member of SJU’s Foundation Committee, which was established in 1922 to raise support for the College’s relocation to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927. The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was started in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Sweeney. The squad has compiled an overall mark of 168-194-34 in 54 seasons at Hawk Hill, the most victories of any program on Sweeney Field. SJU opened its playing grounds with a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. Baseball called Sweeney home from 1947 to 1959. The field hockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 and now practices and hosts games on Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. The location has also been home to women’s soccer since 1996 and the field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Sweeney in 2007. The women’s lacrosse squad is 74-104 in 21 seasons on Hawk Hill while the men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 66-88 mark in 21 seasons on Sweeney Field. Overall, the site has seen 1,298 games entering the 2015-16 academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 589-650-59.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country, and is celebrating its 40thanniversary in 2015-16. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Davidson College, The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment over the last few years, adding Davidson College, George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The additions have proven successful with all three institutions winning regular season and tournament championships. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting strong academic institutions with basketball-centric, robust athletic programs. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 76.5 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving,

men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 3,029 student-athletes in 2014-15, a record for a 14-team A-10. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides $70,000 in postgraduate scholarships awards to 14 studentathletes, one from each campus. The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earns high marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. This includes graduating its student-athletes at an 89 percent rate according to the NCAA’s most recent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figures, five percentage points higher than the national average. There were 90 A-10 teams with a perfect 1000 GSR score in the NCAA’s 2014 most recent report. The league also had an average Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 985 in 2015, seven points higher than the national average. A record 60 teams were singled out for public recognition for their APR scores by the NCAA this past spring. There were 51 teams with a perfect APR score of 1000 and another 71 teams that scored a 990 in the 2015 report. Success on the playing field has mirrored the A-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earning NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and 11 men’s and women’s basketball bids in 2014-15. Dayton women’s basketball made a run to the Elite Eight, challenging eventual national champion UConn in the process, while VCU baseball advanced to the 2015 NCAA Super Regionals.

The Mackal Fieldhouse at the University of Rhode Island will once again serve as host to the 2016 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships from February 20-21.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from

New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work

and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
