2015 SEASON OUTLOOK Four consecutive top-three finishes. Back-to-back silver medals from 2012-13. 2015 bronze medalists. Picked to finish third at this year’s Atlantic 10 Championship, the Saint Joseph’s men’s cross country squad enters the 2015 campaign with its eyes set on its first A-10 title since 2009. Under the direction of 27th-year head coach Mike Glavin, SJU returns 20 Hawks and adds 16 newcomers for the 2015 season. The Hawks return five of seven scorers from last year, including junior John Mascioli (17th), senior Quinn Davis (33rd), sophomore David Dorsey (41st), graduate student Paul Szulewski (47th), and junior Jimmy Daniels (52nd); Szulewski (2011) and Mascioli (2013) earned A-10 Rookie of the Year honors in their respective freshman seasons. The veteran duo of Szulewski and Davis will captain the 2015 squad. Szulewski, now in his second year as a squad captain, was SJU’s #3 runner at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships 10k (31:26.9) last season. After redshirting the 2013 campaign due to injury, Szulewski fought his way back into a scoring threat last year at the conference meet. “Paul did a great job last year, and did it while he was trying to come back from all of those injuries of his junior year,” said Glavin. “He made it part way back by the end of the season, and he was running in our top seven again, which is a hard fight for a year off.”

Graduate student co-captain Paul Szulewski

Senior co-captain Quinn Davis

Davis was one of five Hawks to both race in and score at all three major meets last year, placing 37th as SJU’s #2 finisher at the IC4A Championships and 98th at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, turning in a collegiate-best 32:45.9 at the 10k meet. “You look at guys who, from their way on in until now, have risen and grown within the sport, and the most obvious one there was Quinn. He went from running 30 miles a week in high school to now trying to get things done that he should be getting done.” Alongside Szulewski and Davis, the junior trio of Mascioli, Daniels, and Dan Savage will be expected to round out Saint Joseph’s top five in 2015. With the vacancy of 2014 A-10 individual champion Rad Gunzenhauser and three-time All-Conference selection Logan Mohn, SJU’s top two runners from last season, SJU’s 2014 #3 runner will be expected to step up into one of the Hawks’ top spots this year, and Mascioli is primed to do so in his third season for the Crimson and Gray. After claiming the top freshman spot at the 2013 A-10 meet, Mascioli continued to improve in his second season, turning in PRs in the 8.4k 26:49.6) and 10k (31:47.8). Daniels and Savage are coming off of outstanding outdoor track seasons. Daniels qualified for IC4As in the 10k and scored in the event at the 2015 A-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships while Savage, who missed last cross country season due to injury, qualified for IC4As in the steeplechase and took over ten seconds off of his PR in the event to place eighth at 2015 A-10s.

2015 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE 2

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK Mascioli, Daniels, and Savage were the only freshmen to race A-10s in their rookie seasons. “We’ve got a trio there that’s going to be nice; that’s going to make us,” said Glavin of his junior core. “John consistently races above his training, Jimmy is very consistent and is starting to come along the way he wants to, and Dan, although he hasn’t raced much cross country, is now in his junior season in terms of training and strength. If Paul and Quinn can do the kinds of things we think they’re capable of doing, with progression, and then you add these three guys to that, there’s an experienced quintet there.” Saint Joseph’s top returning sophomore, Dorsey can also be expected to factor into SJU’s top spots in 2015. A two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week selection last year, Dorsey proved to be SJU’s #4 runner and top rookie and finished third of all Hawks at IC4As. “You usually see the biggest jump in progression from freshman to sophomore year, so if he follows suite like a lot of runners have, his biggest improvement is going to come off of freshman year,” said Glavin. “I think he’s going to put himself as a factor with that Szulewski, Davis, Mascioli, Daniels, and Savage group immediately. He races consistently and aggressively.” Following SJU’s expected top six, the Hawks will utilize the depth of a core group of sophomores in Collin Crilly, Kevin Dorsey, Dave Garton, Anthony Morelli, and Brendan Bilotta; Garton (70th), Crilly (92nd), and Morelli (94th) all raced A-10s last season. “Count them in,” said Glavin of his second-year racers. “They’re all going to be factors.”

Junior John Mascioli

Junior Jimmy Daniels

Seniors Michael Coleman and John Egan will round out the final year veterans for the 2015 squad and will also look to lead the Crimson and Gray with their experience this fall. “They have both struggled a lot with injuries, but both walked on to the program and have been as dedicated as can be,” said Glavin. “We are hoping this will be a banner year for Michael, and John looks like he’s back.” Juniors Chris Bencivengo and Mike Cassidy will round out the upperclassmen experience while sophomores Graham Bly, Jake Durante-Koller, and Patrick Quirk gained valuable experience in their rookie seasons and will add depth for the Hawks in 2015. Junior Jack Magee and sophomore Andrew Myers will train with the cross country squad to prepare for the middle distance events that the 2015-16 indoor and outdoor track seasons provide. The Hawks welcome 16 newcomers to the squad this fall. Junior transfer Evan Guerin (Saint Charles, Mo./Archmere Academy (Del.)/Rochester (N.Y.)) alongside freshmen Justin Branco (Franklinville, N.J. (Delsea Regional), Jack Daly (Media, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep), Dylan Eddinger (Bally, Pa./Boyertown), Mike Elliott (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame High), Tommy Higley (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum), Rory Houston (Clifton, N.J./Clifton), Shawn Hutchison (Blackwood, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep), Sean Macpherson (Stratford, N.J./Sterling), Matthew Mullin-Garcia (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep), Keelan O’Reilly (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East), Michael Phayre (Abington, Pa./La Salle College High), John Podles (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall College High), Sean Princivalle (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High), Will Sponaugle (Palmyra, Pa./Hershey), and Brendan Thorp (Fair Haven, N.J./RumsonFair Haven) will round out the 2015 cross country squad.

In 2012-13, Glavin coached Kevin McDonnell, who became the program's first male All-American since 1986. He also coached 19 IC4A All-East selections, eight All-Conference selections, two NCAA Outdoor Track East Regional qualifiers, and one A10 Academic All-Conference honoree. A four-time Atlantic 10 Cross Country Coach of the Year, Glavin led the Hawks to their fourth A-10 Championship in 2009 following additional championships in 1992, 1998, and 2000. Glavin also coached Saint Joseph's to A-10 Cross Country runner-up finishes eight times: 1990, 1993, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2012, and 2013. Under his leadership, the Saint Joseph’s mens’s track and field and cross country program has produced a total of 171 Atlantic 10 track and field champions - 95 indoor and 76 outdoor - in addition to 50 All-Conference cross country honorees, 61 Academic All-Conference performers, 30 NCAA Regional and seven NCAA Finals qualifiers, six IC4A Track and Field champions, three Academic All-District honorees, and an Academic All-American. 2015 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE 4

Glavin returned to his alma mater after a highly successful 10year stint as the track and cross country coach at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, N.J. During his tenure there, he led the cross country team to an astounding 110-0 record, including three state championships in 1984, 1985 and 1988. His track record was an impressive 60-18, which included four South Jersey championships and the 1989 state crown. Glavin was inducted into the Paul VI Alumni Hall of Fame in October of 2009. As a Hawk, Glavin established numerous records, including the outdoor track records for the three-mile run and 5k and the indoor track records for the mile and two-mile runs. On the cross country course, Glavin held the Belmont Plateau record with a time of 25:36 and is one of just two Hawks in program history to have twice qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships; the other Hawk, McDonnell, was coached by Glavin. ASSISTANT COACH Teddy Meyers Assistant Coach - Eighth Season Saint Joseph’s University ‘07

Teddy Meyers, a 2007 graduate and 12-time letterwinner of the Saint Joseph's men's

cross country and track teams, enters his eighth season on Hawk Hill in 2015-16.

A standout student-athlete at SJU, Meyers built an impressive résumé of both athlet-

ic and academic accomplishments throughout

his career on Hawk Hill. Meyers was a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference cross country hon-

oree and earned the A-10 5k title in both the 2006 indoor and outdoor track seasons.

For his dedication in the classroom, Meyers

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 59 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

SWEENEY FIELD FAIRMOUNT PARK

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has

been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. The track is the current

home of the men’s and women’s track and field teams while

the pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.

Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the

field has undergone numerous changes over the years. The

most recent upgrade occured this summer, as the TigerTurf that was laid down in 2008 was replaced with FieldTurf and

Saint Joseph’s track was resurfaced.

One of the largest municipal parks in the United States,

Fairmount Park includes several excellent training venues for

Saint Joseph's runners. The Hawks benefit from the use of the Wissahickon Trail, Belmont Plateau, and both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Kelly Drives (also known as West and East River Drives, respectively). All are just minutes away from Hawk Hill and are

among the most favored spots for Philadelphia's running community.

The Belmont Plateau serves as SJU cross country’s home course. It is Philadelphia's primary high school and college cross

country course and is considered one of the most challenging in the country.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country, and is celebrating its 40thanniversary in 2015-16. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Davidson College, The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment over the last few years, adding Davidson College, George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The additions have proven successful with all three institutions winning regular season and tournament championships. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting strong academic institutions with basketball-centric, robust athletic programs. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 76.5 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving,

men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 3,029 student-athletes in 2014-15, a record for a 14-team A-10. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides $70,000 in postgraduate scholarships awards to 14 studentathletes, one from each campus. The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earns high marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. This includes graduating its student-athletes at an 89 percent rate according to the NCAA’s most recent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figures, five percentage points higher than the national average. There were 90 A-10 teams with a perfect 1000 GSR score in the NCAA’s 2014 most recent report. The league also had an average Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 985 in 2015, seven points higher than the national average. A record 60 teams were singled out for public recognition for their APR scores by the NCAA this past spring. There were 51 teams with a perfect APR score of 1000 and another 71 teams that scored a 990 in the 2015 report. Success on the playing field has mirrored the A-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earning NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and 11 men’s and women’s basketball bids in 2014-15. Dayton women’s basketball made a run to the Elite Eight, challenging eventual national champion UConn in the process, while VCU baseball advanced to the 2015 NCAA Super Regionals.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From

North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other

advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
