Annual Report 2016-17 Dear Hawk Fans, It was a remarkable year for Saint Joseph’s Athletics in 2016-17. Most significantly, our 487 studentathletes boasted a 3.14 cumulative grade point average and a graduation and eligibility rate of .992. In addition, seven of our teams received public recognition awards from the NCAA for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport and we had 48 players recognized for their academic accomplishments. In competition our teams excelled, highlighted by women’s soccer and field hockey capturing Atlantic 10 regular season titles, men’s rowing qualifying for the IRA National Championship, and two studentathletes racing at the NCAA Track East Regional. None of our success would be possible without the loyal support of our alumni, parents, fans and friends! Furthermore, we remain steadfast in our commitment to Developing Everyday Champions. While our athletes demonstrate this in their work in the classroom and community, we continue to expand our offerings and programs which allow them to grow personally, spiritually and professionally. Highlights WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS: Women’s Soccer Captures First A-10 Crown
Posting the best season in school history with an 18-2-2 record, the Women’s Soccer team captured the Atlantic 10 regular season title and advanced to the Conference title game for the first time. Individually, Dakota Mills set new singleseason records with 18 goals and 41 points, while Gabrielle Vagnozzi set a new mark with 11 assists. Numerous Hawks earned All-Conference and All-Region honors, including Mills and senior Emily Gingrich, who earned First Team All-A-10 and All-Region honors. Gabrielle Vagnozzi was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year and Jess Mannella was named Coach of the Year.
Field Hockey Wins A-10 Title, Earns National Ranking For the first time since 1995, the Field Hockey team captured the Atlantic 10 regular season title and moved into the national polls. Rising to a ranking of #20 during the year, the Hawks went on to advance to the A-10 championship game. The squad finished with a 15-6 record, the second-highest win total in school history, including an 8-0 mark in conference play. Anna Willocks earned All-America honors after tallying 25 goals and 62 points, the second highest single-season totals in SJU history. Pepa Serrano was recognized as A-10 Rookie of the Year and Lynn Farquhar was named Coach of the Year.

Highlights Men’s Rowing Qualifies for IRA National Championship, Captures Dad Vail Medals The men’s rowing team capped off one of its most successful seasons with a strong effort at the 2017 IRA National Championship. The Hawks qualified three boats for the regatta and placed 19th overall at the event which was held on Lake Natoma in California. It marked the Hawks’ first appearance at IRAs since the current qualification format began in 2009. The men also took home a pair of gold medals (Second Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8) and one silver (Varsity 8) at the Dad Vail Regatta, finishing third in the point standings and combining with the women’s team to place third overall.
Women’s Rowing Shines at Dad Vail, Competes at Henley Regatta The women’s rowing team posted stellar results at the Dad Vail Regatta finishing second in the women’s point standings, after winning a gold medal in the Freshman 8 and bronze in the Varsity 8. The women also combined with the men’s team to finish in third place overall. The team then concluded its season by competing in the Senior Eight and the Double Skulls at the Henley Women’s Regatta in London. It marked the third time SJU raced at the prestigious event and the first time since 2010.

Awards & Honors Willocks Named All-American, Field Hockey Standouts Earn Honors Sophomore Anna Willocks was named a Second Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. She is just the third player in program history to receive All-America honors. In addition, she was named First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region, an ECAC All-Star, the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year and was recognized as the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year. In addition, Pepa Serrano was named A-10 Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Region, while Lynn Farquhar was recognized as the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
Mills, Gingrich Receive Top Conference, Regional Women’s Soccer Honors After a record-setting season, women’s soccer standouts Dakota Mills and Emily Gingrich garnered numerous regional and conference accolades. Mills, who shattered single-season marks for goals and points, was recognized as both the ECAC and Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year. In addition, she garnered A-10 All-Conference First Team and All-Championship Team honors, and was named NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team. Gingrich, meanwhile, was named A-10 Midfielder of the Year and earned First Team All-Region and All-A-10 honors. The tandem also were selected to the ECAC All-Star First Team. Additionally, Gabrielle Vagnozzi was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year and Jess Mannella was named A-10 Coach of the Year.

Awards & Honors Gingrich and Doaty Named Recipients of Class of 1950 Awards Emily Gingrich (Women’s Soccer) and Torey Doaty (Men’s Track & Field) have been selected as the recipients of Saint Joseph’s Class of 1950 Awards, as the school’s top graduating student-athletes. A four-time All-A-10 and three-time All-Region selection, Gingrich finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in goals (43), points (103) and shots (307), while ranking second in assists (17). She helped the Hawks advance to the postseason three times, including a school-record 18-2-2 mark and the A-10 regular season title in 2016. Doaty excelled on the track and was a six-time A-10 champion (400m hurdles, 500m run, 4x400m relay) and nine-time A-10 medalist. He was a member of four SJU relay teams that hold school records and is a three-time NCAA East Regional qualifier. A three-time IC4A medalist, he received All-East honors nine times and helped the Hawks to their first-ever IC4A gold medal in the 4x400m relay in 2016.
Egan, Lane Named to Women’s Lacrosse National Teams
Stafford, Jr. Selected by Pittsburgh Pirates in Major League Draft
Women’s lacrosse standouts Maggie Egan ’17 and Bec Lane were selected to National Team rosters for the 2017 FIL Women’s World Cup, which was held in Surrey, England in July. Egan represented Ireland, while Lane played for Australia. Lane also competed at the 2017 International World Games in Wroclaw, Poland.
Deon Stafford, Jr., was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft. A three-time AllAtlantic 10 selection, Stafford is the 26th Hawk to be drafted by a Major League club and SJU’s highest selection since 1979. He is the sixth Hawk to be drafted during Fritz Hamburg’s tenure as coach. The catcher finished his career ranked second on the Hawks’ all-time list with 28 home runs and seventh with a .348 career batting average.

Clark Earns Top A-10 Rookie Honors; Men’s Cross Country Claims Silver at IC4As Josh Clark earned Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie honors after placing 23rd at the A-10 Cross Country Championship. In addition, the men’s cross country team placed second at the IC4A Championship with six Hawks being named All-East for placing in the top 25.
Awards & Honors Doaty and Savage Compete at NCAA Regional Championship Torey Doaty and Dan Savage represented SJU at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional Championship at the University of Kentucky. Savage placed 39th in the 3000m steeplechase, while Doaty placed 24th in the 400m hurdles. Other notable performances by the Hawks during the year saw Doaty earn a silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the IC4A Outdoor Championship and Savage claim silver in the Steeplechase at the A-10 Outdoor meet. Indoor, Steve Thompson won the 800m individual title and the Hawks earned six medals at the A-10 Indoor Championships.
Foster Wins ECAC Indoor Track Gold, Bourdeau Garners Top A-10 Outdoor Honors Paced by seniors Courtney Foster and Dannah Hayward, the women’s track team broke seven school records during the 2016-17 indoor and outdoor seasons. Individually, Foster eclipsed her own indoor 400m record (54.96) en route to winning a gold medal at the ECAC Championship, while Hayward broke her own school mark in the 400m hurdles (59.89). The duo also helped the Hawks set new indoor and outdoor 4x400m relay records. In addition, the indoor Distance Medley, 4x100m and Sprint Medley Relay records were also eclipsed. The team placed seventh at the A-10 Outdoor meet, the program’s highest finish since 2004. Nathaniela Bourdeau was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning the 100m and 200m and placing third in the 4x100m. At the ECAC Outdoor Championship, Caroline Duffy became the first Hawk to earn All-East in three events (4x400, 4x100, 200m) at the same meet.

Notable Performances Record-Setting Season for Women’s Lacrosse Notching school records for victories overall (11) and in the Atlantic 10 (7), the women’s lacrosse team placed second in the A-10 and advanced to the postseason for the second consecutive year, hosting the conference tournament on Sweeney Field. Along the way, the Hawks broke single-season records with 232 goals, 112 assists, 334 points, and 553 shots. Individually, Nora McCallion and Kristen Kelbon were selected to the All-A-10 First Team, while Mallory Grey and Rebecca Lane made the Second Team. Hope Anhut and Julia Pash were tabbed to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.
Men’s Lacrosse Places Six on All-NEC Teams Chris Blewitt and Austin Smith were named to the Northeast Conference men’s lacrosse First Team. In addition, T.J. Jones, Connor Kubikowski and Kevin Reidinger made the Second Team, while James Bohlinger was tabbed to the All-Rookie Team. A Preseason Honorable Mention All-American, Jones finished his career as both the program’s career and single-season leader in victories and goals against average.
Women’s Basketball Returns to the Postseason Women’s basketball surged to a third-place finish in the Atlantic 10 and returned to the postseason, earning the program’s 10th trip to the WNIT. Chelsea Woods was named the Atlantic 10’s Sixth Woman of the Year, along with earning Second Team A-10 and Big 5 honors. The Big 5’s Most Improved Player, Adashia Franklyn was tabbed to the All-Big 5 Second Team and All-A-10 Third Team. Sarah Veilleaux was recognized as the Big 5 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

O’Brien Leads Golf Squad Four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Michael O’Brien began his Hawk career by earning medalist honors and leading SJU to the title at the Bucknell Invitational. The squad’s top finisher at the A-10 Championship, he posted a 74.8 stroke average for the year.

Notable Performances Men’s Basketball Standouts Deliver Breakout Performances Several players emerged with breakout performances for the men’s basketball team in 2016-17 before injuries derailed a promising campaign. Shavar Newkirk (20.3 ppg.) and Lamarr Kimble (15.5 ppg.) developed into arguably the A-10’s top backcourt, before suffering season-ending injuries. In their stead, James Demery earned All-Big 5 Second Team honors, averaging a career-best 14.5 points and overcoming an ailment which sidelined him for 10 games. Also making an immediate impact, Charlie Brown proved to be one of the nation’s top freshmen, averaging double figures and being named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.
Crawford, Harris Earn A-10, Soccer Six Honors
Men’s & Women’s Tennis Continue Winning Ways
Senior Bliss Harris and junior Matt Crawford were voted onto both the Atlantic 10 AllConference Second Team and Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star Teams. The Hawks’ captain, Harris made 16 starts, while Crawford lead SJU with seven goals and 17 points. Isaac Agyapong was named to the Soccer Six All-Rookie Team.
Men’s tennis posted its sixth straight 10-win season, while its 14 victories were the fourth highest total in program history. Individually, Kyle Chalmers closed his career by tying the program record for singles wins with 73. Tim Stierle, meanwhile, was named to the All-A-10 First Team after notching 22 singles victories, the second highest season total in SJU history.

Softball Standouts Lead SJU to the Postseason The softball team placed third in the Atlantic 10 and advanced to the postseason for the ninth time in the past 10 seasons, advancing to the conference semifinals. Individually, Amanda Kulp led the way earning First Team All-A-10 and Second Team All-Northeast Region honors, while Ashley Ventura was named Second Team All-A-10 and Third Team All-Region. In addition, Caela Abadie garnered All-A-10 Second Team Honors, and was joined on the A-10 All-Rookie team by classmates Jancarla Herrera and Sarah Ostaszewski.
On the women’s side, Claire Minnoe and Alex Zachem finished among SJU’s all-time top 10 in career singles victories.

Academic Excellence Magee Awarded Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship Men’s track and field and cross country standout Jack Magee was named one of 14 recipients of an Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship. The award provides graduating student-athletes the opportunity to continue their education, the program awards $70,000 in scholarship funding to former A-10 student-athletes.

Seven SJU Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards Seven SJU athletic teams earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport based on their most recent Academic Progress Rate. The SJU teams honored were: men’s cross country, men’s track, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, women’s tennis and women’s track.
Hawks Earn First Team Academic All-District Honors Chris Blewitt (Men’s Lacrosse) and Kyle Chalmers (Men’s Tennis) were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large First Team. The Northeast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Blewitt was also named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. Chalmers, meanwhile was recognized as the Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year and was named to the A-10 All-Academic Team for the third time.

HAWKS IN THE COMMUNITY:
Student-Athletes Participate in Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Close to 300 Saint Joseph’s student-athletes joined the nation in honoring the leadership and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by participating in a day of service on January 16. Working alongside neighbors and community partners, the Hawks volunteered at 15 locations in West Philadelphia and across the Delaware Valley.

SJU student-athletes once again participated in the University’s Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Drive. Joining fellow members of the SJU community, the Hawks’ varsity teams collected baskets full of holiday fare. The SJU baseball team then organized and delivered a total of 95 baskets to Project H.O.M.E. which distributed them to homeless individuals and low-income families in Philadelphia.
For the 22nd year in a row, the men’s basketball team in conjunction with Campus Ministry took part in its annual Christmas Charity project. The team collected money at the Temple game on November 30 and used the contributions to buy gifts, as well as a Christmas dinner for needy families in West Philadelphia. Gifts were wrapped and delivered, along with the food, prior to the holiday.

Kimble, Monaghan Attend A-10 Leadership Summit SJU basketball players Alyssa Monaghan and Lamarr Kimble attended the Atlantic 10’s first Student-Athlete Leadership Summit on April 8-9 in Washington, D.C. The two-day event featured professional speakers and seminars on developing leadership skills, personal brand identities, networking skills, social responsibility and life after college.

Advancing the Mission SJU to Dedicate Track in Honor of Longtime Coach Quinn
The track at Saint Joseph’s University will be named the Kevin Quinn Track, after longtime track and field coach Kevin Quinn, it was announced at the Track Hall of Fame Dinner on October 15. Quinn spent a combined 49 years as head coach at SJU between the men’s and women’s track and field and cross country programs from 1966-2015. The track will be officially dedicated on September 23.

Annual philanthropic support of SJU Athletics provides critical resources which impact the experience of our student-athletes. Saint Joseph’s University President Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., was named chair of the Atlantic 10 Council of Presidents at their annual spring meetings. His three-year term began in July.
New Shell Dedicated in Honor of Former Coach Bannan The SJU men’s rowing program christened its newest boat in honor of former head coach John Bannan. The Hawks’ coach from 19972002, he helped guide the men to the Dad Vail title and a trip to the Henley Royal Regatta in 1999, as well as runner-up finishes at the Dad Vail in 1997 and 2000.
