2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Expectations are high as the Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse pro-‐ gram enters its inaugural season in the Northeast Conference in 2014. The Hawks return 23 letterwinners, including all 10 starters, and welcome 19 newcomers under the direction of third-‐year head coach Taylor Wray. OFFENSE The Hawks return last season’s top four scorers in sophomore attack Pat Swanick, junior attack Matt Sarcona, junior midfielder Mike Dougherty and senior midfielder Johnny Simanski, a core that combined for 57 percent (59-‐of-‐103) of SJU’s total goals in 2013. A 2013 CAA All-‐Rookie selection, Swanick (22G, 6A) led the team with 28 points and ranked in the top five of every offensive category. With Sarcona (14G, 5A) also on the front line, the lead-‐ ing and second-‐leading scoring duo from last season is expected to show explosive scoring potential in 2014. Dougherty (13G, 8A) and Simanski (10G, 7A) will patrol the midfield this season. Dougherty enters this year after a team-‐best 81 shots on a team-‐best 43 shots on goal last season while Simanski ranked in the top five in all offensive categories for the Hawks. With a combined five seasons between the veterans, Dougherty and Simanski will be significant factors on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field in 2014. With the highly anticipated return of redshirt junior Ryan McGee (4G, 3A), who recorded seven points in just two games last season and owns career numbers of 42 goals and 21 assists, SJU’s offensive unit has the opportunity to make a mark in the NEC this year. Another returning group of considerable notice is the midfield quartet of juniors Josh Cavanaugh (4G, 5A) and Rob Watts (5G, 2A) and sophomores Richard Gabelman (3G, 2A) and Bryan Garrahan (4G, 2A). All four saw action in all 16 games in 2013 and provide substantial depth off the bench for the Hawks. Junior Kyle Bruun (2G) and sophomores Joe McErlean (1G, 19GB), Matt Blasco (2G), and Chase Elliott, and will also return to the offensive end of the field this season. Newcomers Miles Davis, Michael Rastivo, Robert Raucci, Parker Self, and Ray Vandegrift will add to the attack, while Tyler Cliggett, Anthony Joaquim, Mike Lanham, Danny Manning, Brian McNamara, Marcus Milione, Kevin Reidinger, and Evan Wolf will be expected to make contributions in the midfield. FACEOFF Senior midfielder Will Abbott returns as SJU’s faceoff special-‐ ist after posting a .450 percentage (118-‐of-‐262) in 2013. Abbott also ranked second on the team in ground balls (37). Classmate Billy Annesley will also see time at the X and enters 2014 with a career faceoff percentage of .361 (56-‐of-‐155) while freshmen Charles Giunta (.560 face-‐off percentage as a senior), Mike Lanham (FCA face-‐off champion), and Danny Manning (.750 face-‐off percentage as a senior) also have considerable high school experience from the X and could be contributors this year.

DEFENSE The defensive unit is set with the junior trio of Kevin Barrow, Will Farrell, and Jack Moran. Farrell led the team in ground balls (44) and caused turnovers (24) last season while Barrow (22GB, 12CT) and Moran (16GB, 9CT) were also solid on the back line. The three defensive veterans started all 16 games last season to com-‐ bine for 82 ground balls and 49 percent (45-‐of-‐92) of SJU’s total caused turnovers. Juniors Dylan O’Donnell and Guy Talarico, sophomores Cameron Riley and John Winchell, and freshmen Charles Giunta, Connor Kubikowski, Shane Taggert, and Jared Wolf will look to add to the defensive unit. GOALKEEPERS Junior Dustin Keen earned the starting role between the pipes for the Hawks last season and returns as SJU’s starting goalkeeper in 2014. Keen had a standout sophomore season, starting all 16 contests to boast a 9.90 goals-‐against average and .503 saves per-‐ centage in 860:16. Keen averaged 10.25 saves against nationally ranked opponents and made 10-‐plus saves on seven different occasions in 2013. Freshmen T.J. Jones and James Superka will back up Keen in goal. OVERALL "We've still got a lot of question marks in our line up," said Wray. "There's going to be a lot of shuffling over the next three weeks. There are 20 practices and three scrimmages to watch the guys compete and evaluate who's going to be in what roles on February 15th. One thing I can say is this is the tightest it's been over the last two years in terms of the separation between players at each position."

NORTHEAST CONFERENCE It is with great pride and anticipation that the Northeast Conference (NEC) enters its 33rd year as an NCAA Division I athletic conference. Ten strong and committed to strengthening the Conference from within, the NEC comes off the most successful year in league history in terms of ath-‐ letic and academic success. Poised for a new era of growth, innovation and achievement under the leadership of Noreen Morris, the Conference will continue to build around the theme of #NECPride. The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providing opportunities for student-‐athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the Conference continually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for student-‐athlete achievement, academic excellence, integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first established as the ECAC-‐Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball confer-‐ ence for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-‐sport enti-‐ ty at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations over the past three plus decades, having transformed itself into a 10-‐member, 22-‐ sport conference. In recent years, the NEC has taken aim at elevating the brand aware-‐ ness of the league, elevating the caliber of its championship events and enhancing the opportunities and experiences for student-‐athletes that compete in the Conference. The NEC has raised its commitment to basketball through a host of strategic initiatives, most notably via a Brand and Basketball Enhancement fund, revised scheduling parameters and the implementa-‐ tion of state-‐of-‐the-‐art LED signage at all arenas. The NEC has also pro-‐ vided each institution with a basketball marketing grant that resulted in the highest attendance on the men’s side in 15 years and the highest per-‐ game average in women’s basketball history last season. The remarkable success story of the Conference began to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship contin-‐ uing to grow over the years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-‐in access to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, football, men’s and women’s golf, men's and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball).
Saint Joseph's enters its inaugural season as an associate member in the Northeast Conference. SJU will join Bryant University, Mount St. Mary's University, Robert Morris University, Sacred Heart University, Wagner College, and fellow new member Hobart College in the NEC.

They are joined by Mount St. Mary’s (admitted in 1989), Central Connecticut (1997), Sacred Heart (1999) and Bryant (2012). The NEC's six-‐state geographic footprint includes access to such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence. NEC member institutions now compete in 22 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. The NEC opened the 2013-‐14 academic year by introducing a mod-‐ ernized version of its primary and secondary marks, giving the Conference a fresh, yet familiar look moving forward. The next evolution of NEC Front Row will come this fall with the debut of HD quality webcasts around the league. Likewise, with HD Tricasters being provided to each institution, schools will be able to record games in broadcast quality high definition from multiple angles. With this long-‐term upgrade, highlights from Front Row broadcasts can be fed to local news stations, regional sports networks and ESPN (SportsCenter Top-‐10), or used during NEC-‐TV games. The equipment will also come bundled with an HD replay system to be implemented for the 2013-‐14 basketball season. Beginning in the fall of 2013, the NEC’s online digital network will also have its own iPhone/iPad application that can be downloaded at no cost. Live and on-‐demand events will also be free of charge, and fans can take part in the conversation through the app’s built-‐in social media capa-‐ bilities. Coming off the success of its #NECPride, Moon Magic documentary short, the NEC also plans to go back and revisit some of the greatest teams, student-‐athletes and moments that have shaped the league’s his-‐ tory, all under the #NECPride film banner.

Taylor Wray enters his third season as head coach for the Saint Joseph’s men's lacrosse team in 2014, having been named the fourth head coach in the program’s history on August 1, 2011. Last season, Wray and his staff led Saint Joseph's to a five-‐win season and its second victory against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent. In 2012, Wray and his staff led an inspired group to a six-‐ win season and its first victory against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent as a member of the conference. With just nine wins in the previous three seasons com-‐ bined, Wray led a 2012 Hawk team that tied for eighth in the country in overall improvement, led the nation in win per-‐ centage increase and tied for fourth in the nation in biggest jump in total number of wins with six overall victories. He came to Saint Joseph's after serving as an assistant coach at Lehigh University from 2008-‐11. Wray possesses a wealth of high-‐level playing and coaching experience, having played on the collegiate level at Duke University and profes-‐ sionally in the National Lacrosse League. "We are thrilled and honored to have Taylor join the Saint Joseph's athletic community," said DiJulia. "He has achieved great things as both a player and a coach. His passion, leadership and vision will advance the Saint Joseph's lacrosse program to become a contender in the Colonial Athletic Association." "I can't thank Don Dijulia and the search committee enough for giving me the opportunity to be the head coach of the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team," Wray said on his appointment. "It is an honor and a privilege to lead this program and I am excited to get started. I know we have a tremendous amount of hard work in front of us, but I am confident we can rebuild a win-‐ ning tradition. This is an exciting time for me and my wife as we are thrilled to be joining the Hawks' lacrosse family, and we can't wait to get to know the team, parents and alumni." Wray joined the Lehigh staff in September 2007 and served as the defensive coach and recruiting coordinator. The Mountain Hawks made great strides during his tenure and in 2011, registered the nation's eighth biggest improvement according to LaxPower's computer ratings. Lehigh qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2006, while the defense lowered its goals against average by almost one goal. "It has been an honor to have my good friend Taylor Wray on staff here at Lehigh for the last four years," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "He has been a key component to the overall growth of the program and I have no doubt that he will make a terrific head coach at the Division I level. I wish him all the best as he gets set to take over the lacrosse program at Saint Joseph's University." From 2003 to 2006 Wray was an assistant coach at Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.) and then served as the lacrosse coach, academic coordinator and strength and conditioning specialist at the National Sport Academy for one year in 2007.

HEAD COACH He enjoyed a successful playing career at Duke, helping the Blue Devils to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and winning ACC Tournament titles in 2001 and 2002. Serving as the team captain in 2003, he earned the Eric Tyler Hardy Defensive Player of the Year award and was a four-‐time selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. "For the people who know Taylor like I do, it is understood that he is going to be a star in this profession," said Mike Pressler, Wray's coach at Duke and the current head coach at Bryant University. "In my 29 years of college coaching, I've never come across a better leader. He is a young man of impeccable character and high moral fiber and just one of the true gentlemen in our game today. It's going to be very exciting for me to follow Taylor's coaching career from afar as he very quickly takes the Saint Joseph's program to the next level, as we know he will." Upon graduating from Duke in 2003 with a bachelor's of science degree, he was drafted second overall by the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League. He made an immediate impact, being named the 2004 Rookie of the Year, the Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-‐Star while helping Calgary to the NLL Championship. A three-‐time NLL All-‐Star, played for the Philadelphia Wings from 2008-‐11 and served as team captain in 2011. A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Wray has also excelled internationally. He is currently an assistant coach for the Canadian National Team; he was the defensive coordinator for the 2012 U-‐19 Team and is currently the defensive coordinator for the 2014 Men's National Team. He served in the same role for the 2010 National Team, which finished second at the 2010 World Championships. As a player, he was a member of the National Team which captured the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship for field lacrosse in 2006 and for indoor lacrosse in 2007. He was named to the All-‐World Team in 2007. Wray received a master's degree in teaching from Queens University in 2006. His wife, Lauren (nee Gallagher), was an All-‐American lacrosse player at Duke. They have two sons, Jackson and Ryan.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Dan Keating Associate Head Coach - 3rd Year Duke ‘99 Dan Keating enters his third year with the Hawks and his second year as associate head coach where he serves as the extra man offensive coordinator and assistant offensive coordinator. Keating helped SJU's 2012 squad increase its overall goal production by nearly two goals an outing, and the Extra Man Offense nearly doubled its conversion percentage, good for a 17-‐spot improvement in the national polls. Keating came from Lehigh University where he worked as the extra man offensive coordina-‐ tor and as the assistant offensive coordinator. In 2011, the Lehigh Extra Man Unit finished ninth in the country in terms of scoring percentage and second in the Patriot League in terms of goals scored. As the assistant offensive coordinator, Keating helped develop the Lehigh offense that fin-‐ ished the 2011 season averaging 10.44 goals per game. Prior to joining the Mountain Hawk's staff, Keating served as the Head Coach of Malvern Prep. In 2010, Malvern won the regular season Inter-‐Ac Championship. Under his leadership, Malvern produced two High-‐School All-‐Americans, one Underarmour All-‐American, three All-‐ state players, and five first-‐team All Inter-‐Ac players. In addition to coaching at Malvern Prep, Keating has also served as the Head Coach of St. Joseph's Prep and The Taft School. During his three years at St. Joseph's Prep, his teams compiled a record of 61-‐22, including a 4-‐3 record in the Pennsylvania state playoffs. While at St. Joseph's Prep, Keating coached 24 first-‐team All-‐Catholic League players, three of whom earned All-‐state honors. Keating, who graduated from Duke University in 1999, was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams, including the Blue Devils' 1997 squad that reached the NCAA Final Four. A member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, Keating earned his master's degree in secondary educa-‐ tion from Saint Joseph's University. Keating is the founder and owner of Keating Lacrosse Clinics, LLC, which focuses on teaching the fundamentals of the game to aspiring youth lacrosse players. He and his wife Kristin reside in Philadelphia.

ASSISTANT COACH Steve Grossi Assistant Coach - 2nd Year Drexel ‘09 Steve Grossi returns for his second season as an assistant coach in 2013-‐14. Grossi is prima-‐ rily responsible for SJU's defensive personnel, face-‐off team, and goalkeepers. He joined the Hawks after spending two years at Hampden-‐Sydney College, where he was involved in all aspects of the program. As the defensive coor-‐ dinator, Grossi worked closely with the defensive units and goalies and coached All-‐Conference play-‐ ers each season. During his time at Hampden-‐ Sydney, the Tigers appeared in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference playoffs every year. "I am excited to work with him and learn from him as he settles into the new role," said Saint Joseph's head coach Taylor Wray. "Steve was high-‐ ly recommended by all who have been involved with him as a coach and player. He will be work-‐ ing primarily with our defensive personnel, face-‐off team, and goalies." "I am thrilled to be a part of the Saint Joseph's University community and the lacrosse pro-‐ gram," said Grossi. "I look forward to working at a university with such a great academic reputa-‐ tion with a passion for college athletics. Having the chance to work with Coach Wray and Coach Keating is an absolute honor. I am extremely thankful. A 2009 graduate of Drexel University, Grossi earned a bachelor's of science degree in busi-‐ ness administration with concentrations in finance and marketing. A four-‐year starter for the Dragons, Grossi was a four-‐time All-‐CAA selection, earning second-‐team honors in 2005 and 2006 while being tabbed first team in 2007 and 2008. A two-‐time pre-‐season honorable mention All-‐ American, Grossi was on the 2008 Tewaarton Trophy Watch List and was voted the team's Most Valuable Player as a senior. After his standout career at Drexel, Grossi was a member of the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League in 2008-‐09. He was also a Developmental/Player Coach and a member of the Glenelg Lacrosse Club in Adelaide, South Australia, where he earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Australia National Championships in the summer of 2010. Additionally, Grossi was a graduate assistant coach at Drexel University for the 2008-‐09 season, assisting with the team defense and man-‐down units. Also a member of the Drexel University Junior Achievement Program from 2005-‐07, Grossi was responsible for creating and implementing a lacrosse program within the Philadelphia inter-‐city school districts.

SWEENEY FIELD Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 700 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soc-‐ cer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon comple-‐ tion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantly increased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccer programs. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field was blessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 while a formal dedication will be held this spring The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanent seats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall as well as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side of the field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, the facility will includes a new state of the art press box and enhanced sound system. Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-‐seat football stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s original grandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction of Villiger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field has undergone a number of upgrades and enhancements designed to expand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurf artificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights, and bleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber mate-‐ rial in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue for Hawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition to peripheral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along with countless club, intramural and recreational activities. Legend has it that a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site. Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T. Finnesey. A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of a local auto manufacturer, he was a member of the Saint Joseph’s Foundation Committee which was established in 1922 to raise sup-‐ port for the College’s relocation to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neigh-‐ borhood. Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927. Baseball re-‐occupied the space in 1947, calling Sweeney home until 1959, and the Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was started in 1958 and played every season but except 1960 at Sweeney. The squad has compiled an overall mark of 165-‐192-‐31 in 53 seasons at

Hawk Hill, the most victories of any program on Sweeney Field. SJU opened its playing grounds with a 6-‐0 victory over Rutgers-‐South Jersey in October 24, 1958. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a truly multi-‐purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadi-‐ um. The field hockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 and now practices and hosts games on the new Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. The location has also been home to women’s soc-‐ cer since 1996 and the field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Sweeney in 2007. The women’s lacrosse squad is 71-‐100 in 20 seasons on Hawk Hill. The best season came in 2004 when the Hawks went 5-‐2 en route to an 8-‐6 campaign. The first game was played on March 23, 1993 when SJU defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 18-‐4. The men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 61-‐86 mark in 20 seasons on Finnesey Field. Overall, the site has seen 1,224 games entering the 2013-‐14 aca-‐ demic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 556-‐617-‐51.

2013 YEAR IN REVIEW 2013 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS • The men’s lacrosse team defeated Massachusetts in CAA action for first CAA win of the season and first win over Massachusetts in pro-‐ gram history. • Freshman attack Pat Swanick earned CAA All-‐Rookie Team honors after leading the Hawks in points (28) and goals (22) to become the first men's lacrosse player in program history to earn CAA postseason honors... Swanick was also the league’s Rookie of the Week (3/18). • Senior attack Kyle Williams concludes his career tied for ninth on SJU’s all-‐time list for career assists (41) and led the team with nine this season. • Four Hawks registered double-‐digit goals on the season: freshman Pat Swanick (22), sophomores Matt Sarcona (14) and Mike Dougherty (13), and junior Johnny Simanski (10). • Sophomore goalkeeper Dustin Keen finished the season ranked in the nation’s top 40 in goals-‐against average (9.73), save percentage (.530), and saves per game (10). • Sophomore defender Will Farrell ranked 38th nationally in caused turnovers per game (1.5) and led the Hawks in ground balls (44) and caused turnovers (24).

THE UNIVERSITY THE HAWK Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an inde-‐ pendent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching dis-‐ ciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University com-‐ bines the Jesuit tradition of academic excel-‐ lence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-‐time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-‐recognized aca-‐ demic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradi-‐ tion of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-‐square-‐foot international academic cen-‐ ter featuring state-‐of-‐the-‐art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-‐in-‐Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-‐run events that draw thousands of spe-‐ cial visitors to campus for fun and friendship. The friendly atmosphere and close-‐knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and ath-‐ letic facilities add a big-‐time “feel” to this grow-‐ ing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s pre-‐ pared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-‐time jobs, pro-‐ fessional schools and other advanced degree
programs. Part-‐time work and internships pro-‐ vide real-‐world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-‐campus recruitment pro-‐ gram provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory pro-‐ grams in the health professions and in pre-‐law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commer-‐ cial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -‐– only a short ride away. SJU stu-‐ dents take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU stu-‐ dents enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for over half a century. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-‐06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-‐year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.
