2014 SEASON OUTLOOK After claiming the ECAC bronze medal and taking home a sixth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championship last fall, the Saint Joseph’s women’s cross country squad returns a core group of juniors and sophomores to the cross country scene in 2014. Despite the loss of eight established impact runners, including four A-10 point scorers and three ECAC All-East runners, due to graduation, the Hawks will look to their 11 returning letterwinners and five newcomers as they enter the 2014 campaign under the direction of 30th-year head coach Kevin Quinn and assistant coach Claire Hewitt, who took over the dayto-day coaching responsibilities in 2012 and enters her third cross country season in that capacity. Junior captains Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka will lead the Hawks into the 2014 season. “With a year under her belt and a commitment to the ‘long stuff’, Lauren could be a real find this year, while Sara showed real courage and racing heart in the spring and can be expected to carry that over into her junior year with the longer distances,” said Quinn of his captains.

Sara Radzwilka

Lauren Hehir

With the top spot vacated by the graduation of Lizzy Barrett, Hehir will look to step in and lead the Hawks into 2014. Hehir was one of just five Hawks to race in all eight meets last season, and she finished second for the Crimson and Gray at A-10s and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. Hehir, Radzwilka, and junior classmates Emily Chaundy, Kathryn Cols, and Tess Doggett will be the backbone of the team as it develops into October. In this class, several runners enjoyed growth, training progress, and understanding, especially during the track seasons. Chaundy scored at A-10s last season while Cols and Doggett set new respective PRs in the 4k, 5k, and 6k.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Junior Melissa Donnelly and the sophomore group of Sydney Coughlin, Alexandra Fiesel, Meghan O’Keefe, Jacqueline Pignataro, and Sarah Regnault should benefit from the type of schedule the Hawks will follow. “The team will face a different schedule than what the Hawks usually pursue,” said Quinn of his hardworking yet young group. “The schedule will look toward late-season success at the A-10 and ECAC meets and will increase confidence and experience in the early season.” The Hawks welcome five newcomers to the squad this fall in Goucher College sophomore transfer June Chiango (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area), sophomore Julia Jenkins (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy), and freshmen Alicia Ezekiel-Pipkin (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddon Township), Megan O’Dowd (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck), and Cassidy Weimer (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South).

Alexandra Fiesel

The Hawks will open the 2014 season this Saturday, August 30. Half of the squad will head to the Duquesne Duals. This meet will serve as an integral opportunity for the team’s top runners to race the Schenley Park course in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, home of the 2014 A-10 Championship. The other half of the squad will race at the TCNJ Blue/Gold Invitational in Hopewell, N.J.

ASSISTANT COACH Claire Hewitt Assistant Coach - Seventh Season University of Pennsylvania ‘05

Claire Hewitt returns for her seventh season as assistant coach of the Saint Joseph's women's cross country and track teams in 2014-15. Hewitt (nee Duncan) took over the day-to-day coaching responsibilities of the women's cross country team in 2012 and will enter her third cross country season in that capacity. Last season, Hewitt coached four ECAC All-East Team selections and an Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection on the cross country scene. A 2005 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Hewitt was a three-time Academic All-American and four-year letterwinner for the Quakers. She completed her degree in political science and environmental studies while captaining the Penn cross country and track squads. Hewitt adds valuable experience to the Hawks track and field and cross country programs having coached for three years at the high school level prior to coming to Hawk Hill in 2008. She spent two years as the head girls' indoor and outdoor track coach at Germantown Friends Academy from 2006-08 while also serving as assistant cross country coach. Prior to Germantown, Hewitt was the head girls' cross country coach as well as the head boys' and girls' indoor and outdoor track coach at Friends Central School in 2005-06. Hewitt resides in Philadelphia with her husband, former Hawk harrier, Rob Hewitt '04.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 58 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

SWEENEY FIELD FAIRMOUNT PARK

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The track is the current home of the men’s and women’s track and field teams while the pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. The field has undergone many upgrades over the years, but the most recent was completed in the summer of 2008. The AstroTurf that was laid down in 2001 was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons.

One of the largest municipal parks in the United States,

Fairmount Park includes several excellent training venues for

Saint Joseph's runners. The Hawks benefit from the use of the Wissahickon Trail, Belmont Plateau, and both Martin Luther

King, Jr. and Kelly Drives (also known as West and East River

Drives, respectively). All are just minutes away from Hawk Hill

and are among the most favored spots for Philadelphia's running community.

The Belmont Plateau serves as SJU cross country’s home

course. It is Philadelphia's primary high school and college cross

country course and is considered one of the most challenging in

the country.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Davidson College, The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013 and Davidson College in 2014. The additions follow a very successful first year by Virginia Commonwealth University, which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting institutions driven by academics and basketball. The league was deemed the “winner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. The three additions were guided by the five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 76.5 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basket-

ball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 2,653 student-athletes in 2013-14. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 StudentAthletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides 10 postgraduate scholarships with $7,000 grants to selected student-athletes. In 2013-14, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition. The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earns high marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. This includes ranking fifth among all 32 Division I Conferences in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the past year’s announcements. Success on the playing field has mirrored the A-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earning NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and a record 13 men’s and women’s basketball bids. Men’s basketball in the Atlantic 10 saw a record six teams earn NCAA Tournament berths and for the seventh straight year an A-10 team advanced to the second weekend of play when Dayton made a run to the Elite Eight.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from

New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work

and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
