2014 SEASON OUTLOOK After claiming back-to-back silver medals at the previous two Atlantic 10 Championship meets and taking home the bronze medal in 2011, the Saint Joseph’s men’s cross country squad enters the 2014 campaign with its eyes set on the goal of winning the Atlantic 10 title. Under the direction of 26th-year head coach Mike Glavin, the Hawks will look to balance both the talent and experience of 15 returning letterwinners and the potential of 12 newcomers this fall. A trio of captains in seniors Mike G. Cassidy and Logan Mohn and redshirt junior Paul Szulewski will lead the Hawks into the 2014 season. Mohn returns for his senior campaign as a two-time A10 All-Conference and IC4A All-East selection. The senior was a crucial factor in Saint Joseph’s success last season, placing fifth at A-10s and second at IC4As to lead the squad to second-place team finishes at both meets. The senior set new PRs in the 6k (19:09.4) and 8k (23:54.4) last season and raced to the team’s fastest 8k performance of the season at Princeton to earn A-10 Performer of the Week honors. The anticipated return of Szulewski will add significant depth to SJU’s scoring group this fall. Szulewski was Saint Joseph’s top runner at both the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and IC4As in 2012 and was named the 2011 A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer. Szulewski redshirted last season due to injury but will look to return as a top runner for the Crimson and Gray this year. In a spot vacated by the graduation of the 2013 A-10 and IC4A bronze medalist Aaron Leskow, the Hawks welcome the addition of William and Mary transfer graduate student Rad Gunzenhauser. Gunzenhauser was a threetime CAA All-Conference selection for the Tribe, where he was the 2013 CAA silver medalist, 2012 CAA bronze medalist, and 2011 CAA Rookie of the Year. Gunzenhauser will exhaust his final season of cross country eligibility with the Crimson and Gray. Junior Quinn Davis and sophomores Jimmy Daniels, John Mascioli, and Dan Savage exceeded expectations last fall and will be expected to continue that momentum into 2014. Voted SJU’s 2013-14 Most Improved Performer, Davis enters his third season for the Hawks in 2014. Having competed in just three races in his freshman campaign, Davis raced in seven of SJU’s eight meets last year en route to IC4A All-East honors and a scoring posi-

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK tion at A-10s. The current sophomore trio of Daniels, Mascioli, and Savage competed at A-10 as rookies on last year’s squad, and Mascioli went on to boast the top-freshman performance to earn 2013 A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer recognition. SJU’s third captain this season, Cassidy has made strong strides throughout his career. A leader through his dedication and loyalty to the squad, Cassidy earned SJU’s Dorie Leahy Award last year. Fellow seniors Steve Butenewicz and Brady Deckert will also train with the cross country squad to prepare for the middle distance events that the 2014-15 indoor and outdoor seasons provide while juniors John Egan and Michael Coleman will round out the upperclassman experience for SJU. Sophomores Chris Bencivengo, Michael K. Cassidy, Jack Magee, and Kevin Trimmer gained valuable experience last season having raced in a combined 22 meets in their rookie seasons and will add significant depth for the Hawks in 2014. Steve Butenewicz

The Hawks welcome 11 freshmen to the squad this fall. Brendan Bilotta (Lafayette Hill, Pa./La Salle College High), Graham Bly (Milton, Mass./Milton), Collin Crilly (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), David Dorsey and Kevin Dorsey (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin), Jake Durante-Koller (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI), Dave Garton (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), Matt Marino (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham), Anthony Morelli (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep), Jack Mulligan (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin), and Pat Quirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) will round out the 2014 cross country squad. The Hawks will open the 2014 season this Saturday, August 30. Half of the squad will head to the Duquesne Duals. This meet will serve as an integral opportunity for the team’s top runners to race the Schenley Park course in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, home of the 2014 A-10 Championship. The other half of the squad will race at the TCNJ Blue/Gold Invitational in Hopewell, N.J.

HEAD COACH Glavin returned to his alma mater after a highly successful 10year stint as the track and cross country coach at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, N.J. During his tenure there, he led the cross country team to an astounding 110-0 record, including three state championships in 1984, 1985 and 1988. His track record was an impressive 60-18, which included four South Jersey championships and the 1989 state crown. Glavin was inducted into the Paul VI Alumni Hall of Fame in October of 2009. As a Hawk, Glavin established numerous records, including the outdoor track records for the three-mile run and 5k and the indoor track records for the mile and two-mile runs. On the cross country course, Glavin held the Belmont Plateau record with a time of 25:36 and is one of just two Hawks in program history to have twice qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships; the other Hawk, McDonnell, was coached by Glavin. Glavin holds a master's degree in mathematics from Villanova University and taught at Haddonfield High School (N.J.) for over 20 years.

ASSISTANT COACH Teddy Meyers Assistant Coach - Seventh Season Saint Joseph’s University ‘07

Teddy Meyers, a 2007 graduate and 12-time letterwinner of the Saint Joseph's men's cross country and track teams, returns for his seventh season as assistant coach of the Hawks in 2014-15. A standout student-athlete at SJU, Meyers built an impressive résumé of both athletic and academic accomplishments throughout his career on Hawk Hill. Meyers was a two-time Atlantic 10 AllConference cross country honoree and earned the A-10 5k title in both the 2006 indoor and outdoor track seasons. For his dedication in the classroom, Meyers was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track teams for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns. His six academic honors are the second most received by any track member at Saint Joseph's in program history. In May 2007, Meyers graduated from Saint Joseph's University with his bachelor's degree in economics. The Bethel Park, Pa. native also graduated from the MBA program at SJU's Haub School of Business in 2010.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 58 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

SWEENEY FIELD FAIRMOUNT PARK

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The track is the current home of the men’s and women’s track and field teams while the pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. The field has undergone many upgrades over the years, but the most recent was completed in the summer of 2008. The AstroTurf that was laid down in 2001 was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons.

One of the largest municipal parks in the United States,

Fairmount Park includes several excellent training venues for

Saint Joseph's runners. The Hawks benefit from the use of the Wissahickon Trail, Belmont Plateau, and both Martin Luther

King, Jr. and Kelly Drives (also known as West and East River

Drives, respectively). All are just minutes away from Hawk Hill

and are among the most favored spots for Philadelphia's run-

ning community.

The Belmont Plateau serves as SJU cross country’s home

course. It is Philadelphia's primary high school and college cross

country course and is considered one of the most challenging in

the country.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Davidson College, The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013 and Davidson College in 2014. The additions follow a very successful first year by Virginia Commonwealth University, which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting institutions driven by academics and basketball. The league was deemed the “winner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. The three additions were guided by the five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 76.5 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basket-

ball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 2,653 student-athletes in 2013-14. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 StudentAthletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides 10 postgraduate scholarships with $7,000 grants to selected student-athletes. In 2013-14, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition. The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earns high marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. This includes ranking fifth among all 32 Division I Conferences in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the past year’s announcements. Success on the playing field has mirrored the A-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earning NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and a record 13 men’s and women’s basketball bids. Men’s basketball in the Atlantic 10 saw a record six teams earn NCAA Tournament berths and for the seventh straight year an A-10 team advanced to the second weekend of play when Dayton made a run to the Elite Eight.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from

New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work

and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
