2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 1

2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW Entering the 2012-13 season with a youthful lineup, Saint Joseph’s will look to mold a roster of six letterwinner and six newcomers into Atlantic 10 Championship contenders. Coming off a ninth-place finish at last year’s conference championship, the Hawks will count on the experience of juniors Mike Hartsough, Kyle Jeziorski and Tyler Kingsley and sophomores Connor Garrity, Tim Godshalk and Connor Hill to challenge for tournament crowns on a weekly basis. Joining the team as a walk on, Hartsough quickly established himself as a significant contributor for the Hawks. Playing in 10 rounds, he posted he posted his best finish of the year, recording a season-low 74 in the opening round of the A-10 Championship and finishing tied for 44th overall. Serving as team captain for the first time, Jeziorski has steadily improved each season. Playing predominantly in the fall last year, he posted a careerbest finish at the Navy Fall Invitational (tie for 49th) and followed with a 79.5 strokes-per-round average in the spring. Looking to compete in more events this year, Kingsley performed admirably in just two events last spring. Making the most of his opportunity, he finished second on the team, and 33rd overall at the at the Navy, and followed with a tie for 42nd at the A-10 Championship. The lone returning Hawk to compete in all 29 rounds last year, Garrity finished third on the team in strokes-per-round (79.8). Now as a sophomore, Garrity will be looked to continue his consistent play from his freshman year as he finished third or better on the team in eight of 11 tournaments. Combinging to play 33 rounds, Godshalk and Hill earned valuable experience during their freshman seasons. Placing fifth on the team in average (80.9 stroke-per-round), Godshalk competed in 16 rounds as a rookie last season and finished second on the team at two events. Playing 17 rounds, Hill had a season-best finish at the Navy Fall Invitational, tying for 63rd.

Junior Kyle Jeziorski will serve as Saint Joseph’s captain for the 2012-13 season.

Sophomore Connor Garrity, the lone returning Hawk to play in all 29 rounds last year, averaged 79.8 strokes-per-round as a rookie.

Adding talent and depth to the Hawks roster this season are newcomers sophomore John Leighton and freshmen Zach Bach, T.J. McNulty, Dan Myers, T.J. Summers and Brian Turley. Local high school standouts Bach and Myers were all-conference standouts at Central Regional High and West Chester Bayard Rustin, respectively, while Summers garnered Intelligencer Player of the Year accolades as a senior at Central Bucks West. A three-year letterwinner, McNulty comes to SJU after helping Boston College High School to three-straight MIAA sectional titles and garnering Catholic Conference All-Star recognition as a senior. The 2011 Harbor League Co-player of the Year, Turley begins his rookie season after helping Coronado High School to league championships as a junior and senior. Saint Joseph’s begins competition at the Navy Fall Invitational, and follows with a trip to the Joe Agee Invitational in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Hawks will then travel to Fort Myers, Florida to compete in the Cobra-Puma Invitational before capping the season with the Big 5 invitational and the Georgetown Hoya Invitational. The spring schedule opens with a competitive field at the C&F Bank Invitational, followed by a pair of local events. The Hawks begin play in April at he Villanova Wildcat Invitational and continue with the Lafayette Invitational and Princeton Invitational. Saint Joseph’s will get it final preparation for the conference championship in Annapolis, Maryland. At the Navy Spring Invitational, before heading to Coral Springs, Florida, for the Atlantic 10 Championship the last week of April. With one of the deepest rosters in recent years, Saint Joseph’s should be in contention on a weekly basis and is poised to challenge for the A-10 title.

HOME COURSES LLANERCH COUNTRY CLUB

Scenic Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa., has served as the home for the Saint Joseph’s University golf team since 1959. Founded in 1919, Llanerch ranks as one of the finest courses in the Delaware Valley. Taking on many shapes over the years, the current 18-hole configuration opened on April 27, 1949 and measures 6,482 yards with a par of 72. Possessing a rich history, many of the nation’s best professionals have played on the Llanerch links over the past 80 years. Arguably the biggest tournament to be played on the site was the 1958 PGA Championship. Golf legend Dow Finsterwald captured the title that year with a score of 276 for 72 holes. That tournament became particularly prominent because stroke play format was used for the first time in PGA Championship history. Other notable events hosted by the course include the Philadelphia Inquirer Invitational in 1945. Byron Nelson captured the title that year, posting the seventh of 11 consecutive tournament championships. It was also the site of the 1949 USGA Women’s Amateur Championship, won by Dorothy Germain Porter. Llanerch has also served as the host of the Philadelphia Amateur Championship three times (1931, 1934 and 1998), as well as the Philadelphia Section PGA Championship five times (1940, 1941, 1942, 1943 and 1965).

BALA GOLF CLUB

Established in 1897, Bala Golf Club has once again become home to the Saint Joseph’s golf program in recent years. The Hawks began playing out of Bala Golf Club following World War II, but changed courses after several seasons, only to return to Bala in 2007. Founded by George Reach and Charles Hickman, Bala Golf Club was originally designed by Willie Tyler as a nine-hole, 2,747-yard course (par 35 1/2). Following pressure to expand to an 18-hole course, Bala Golf Club hired William S. Flynn to renovate the course in 1923. Additionally, Bala Golf Club has continued to expand, inheriting several hole locations from Philadelphia Country Club’s previous home alongside Belmont Avenue. Additionally, Bala Golf Club has been home to numerous tournaments, including the 1952 U.S. Women’s Open.

HEAD COACH Bob Lynch Head Coach La Salle ‘79 - 24th Season

Guiding 17 Hawks to All-Conference honors, Bob Lynch begins his 24th season as the head coach of the Saint Joseph’s golf program. The 2003 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, he has led the Hawks back to prominence as one of the stronger programs in the Northeast, with several individuals excelling under his teaching, including two All-Region golfers. The architect of one of the region’s most demanding schedules, Lynch took the Saint Joseph’s program to the cusp of its first-ever NCAA Championship berth in 2003 as the Hawks placed second at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Crimson and Gray’s previous best effort at A-10s was third place, a feat the squad accomplished three straight seasons from 1993-95. He also guided the team to a berth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships each of those seasons. In his career as head coach, Lynch has compiled an overall record of 20 wins and 22 losses. The last dual meet competition for SJU was a 426-465 win over Lafayette at Llanerch Country Club during the 1992-93 season. Since that time, SJU has competed solely in invitational events that have taken the Hawks all over the country. Additionally, several former Hawks have gone on to have stellar careers thanks to his coaching. Mike McDermott ‘97 won the 2008 Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur Championship and competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship. Phil Arouca ‘07 claimed the 2011 Illinois Open, while Steve Hudacek ‘09 advanced to finals of the 2011 Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur Championship. A former standout at Father Judge High School, Lynch is an avid golfer. The 51-year old works for Spikes, a company that specializes in trophies and plaques. The Richboro, Pa., resident also works as an official at high school and college basketball games and works on the scorer’s table for both Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s basketball games. A 1979 graduate of La Salle University, Lynch and his wife Monica are the parents of five children: Maureen, Bob, Dan, Brian, and Jim.

2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 8

2011-12 YEAR IN REVIEW Playing with a roster of mostly newcomers, the Saint Joseph’s golf team struggled to find consistency in 2011-12. With a combined six freshmen and sophomores on this year’s squad, the Hawks relied on returning scoring leader Jimmy Bea to lead the way. Opening the season at the Navy Fall Invitational, Bea and freshman Connor Garrity carried SJU to a 10th-place finish. Bea posted one of his seven top-20 finishes at the season-opening tournament, tying for 13th, while Garrity finished six strokes back to tie for 29th in his first collegiate match. The duo of Bea and Garrity would finish one-two for Saint Joseph’s at the next two events as well, but the Hawks, as a team, couldn’t find consistent scoring throughout the lineup. Facing talented opponents at the Adams Cup, Saint Joseph’s finished in 17th place, and followed with a 12th-place finish at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational, despite Bea’s tie for 19th. The Hawks would get three strong performances from Bea to cap the Fall portion of their schedule. After finishing tied for 25th at the Big 5 Classic, Bea came on strong tying for seventh at the Georgetown Hoya Intercollegiate and tying for 15th at the Old Dominion/Outerbanks Collegiate. Despite three solid outings by the Hawks’ senior, Saint Joseph’s continued to struggle with steady scoring from its youthful roster as it finished toward the bottom of the field. After a tough outing at the C & F Bank Invitational to start the spring, Bea posted three stellar showings, finishing 15th at the Villanova Wildcat Invitational, 10th at the Princeton Invitational and tying for fifth at the Navy Spring Invitational. Saint Joseph’s steadily improved over the course of the Spring, with the Hawks posting their best performance at the Navy Spring Invitational with a tie for eighth place. The Hawks finished the season with their most balanced effort. Competing for the Atlantic 10 crown at the Heron Bay Golf Club, Saint Joseph’s opened the tournament in the middle of the pack, just eight shots back of fourth place. With torrential rain during the second round, the Hawks slipped back to ninth place, but all five SJU golfers remained competitive, ranging just seven strokes between them. Unfortunately for Saint Joseph’s, the third and final round was called off due to the rain, leaving the Hawks in ninth place, while Bea capped his collegiate career tying for 31st and fellow senior Andrew Jaskel tied for 40th two shots behind. TOP PERFORMANCES - FALL 2011

Jimmy Bea led the Hawks at 11 events in 2011-12, including five top20 finished and three top-10.

HISTORY Golf has a long and storied tradition of success at Saint Joseph’s University. One of the oldest athletic programs on campus, golf debuted as a varsity sport in 1931 as it replaced baseball on Hawk Hill. The first Saint Joseph’s team - consisting of Gene Barnes, John McCormick, Frank Daly, James McCormick, Francis Gallagher, Michael Cullather, George Hartigan, Leo Murphy, John Lehman, Allen Seltzer, Joseph Stanton, and Joseph Schaeffer - played its first match in the Spring of 1931 against the University of Delaware at the Newark Country Club. After posting an 0-6 mark in their inaugural season, the Hawks claimed the program’s first victory in the fall of 1931 as they topped Philadelphia College of Osteopathy, 9-0. Saint Joseph’s also shifted its home that season from Cobbs Creek to the Cedarbrook Country Club. The golf program was disbanded from 1942-47 due to World War II, but returned to Hawk Hill in the spring of 1948. Playing out of the Bala Country Club, Saint Joseph’s return to the course was spearheaded by seniors The 1962-63 SJU golf team went 11-1 during Tom Shannon and Jack McGinty, with future SJU Hall of Famer Paul McDermitt playing out of the top flight for theseason, won the Middle Atlantic Conference Title and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. the Hawks. As a team, the Hawks’ greatest success came in the early 1960s and late 1970s. Saint Joseph’s won its first Middle Atlantic Conference championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1963; however the team decided not to go so that they could make extra money working summer jobs. The Hawks would again claim the MAC title in 1964 and turned in similar feats from 1875-78 as they were led by All-America Honorable Mention John Truax. In 1982, Saint Joseph’s became a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, with the Hawks tying for fourth in their first conference championship. Saint Joseph’s has since turned in its highest league finish in 2003, placing second overall. It previously placed third in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The Hawks claimed their second-straight MAC title in 1964 as Bob Toner (fourth from the left) claimed medalist honors. Left: Paul McDermitt (‘50) served as captain of the golf team and also lettered in baseball, basketball, and track and field. He graduated with more letters than anyone in Saint Joseph’s history, and was enshrined in the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. Center: Mike (‘97) and Kevin (‘99) McDermott earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors a combined five times during their years on Hawk Hill.

ATLANTIC 10 On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Xavier University. In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating the sweeping conference realignment issues, adding Butler University and Virginia Commonwealth University, both of which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league was declared the “winner” of conference realignment by several media outlets, arguably strengthening the league to its bestever lineup with a record 16 members institutions. The additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 16 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 82 million people within its geographic footprint of nine states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The

Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized a record 1,359 student-athletes in the Fall 2011, The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 StudentAthletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2011-12, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic AllConference recognition, while Dayton’s Yvonne Marten, Jennifer Nalepa from Saint Louis, Marissa Norman of Rhode Island and Charlotte’s Macey Ruble received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 has 56 of the more than 950 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate scores. The Atlantic 10 Conference ranks fourth in number of teams publically recognized by the NCAA and fifth in overall APR average among all 32 Division I Conferences with a 981 average. The league boasted 40 squads with perfect scores and 104 teams with a score of 990 or better. In total, 188 A-10 teams were at or above the national average, representing 70 percent of all A-10 teams. Of the 21 championship sponsored sports in the Atlantic 10, 19 had a sport average higher than the national average. There are six sports (field hockey, women's cross country, lacrosse, women's swimming & diving, women's indoor track & field and women's outdoor track & field) in which every A-10 team in that sport is above the national average. The Atlantic 10 boasted a third-place ranking in the single-year Graduation Success Rate (GSR) among all Division I leagues. Measured in a six-year window, 89 percent of freshman enrolling in an A-10 institution in 2004 graduated. Twelve of the league's 14 institutions are above the national four-year GSR average of 8o percent and five of those programs, Dayton, George Washington, Richmond, Saint Joseph's and Xavier are all over 90 percent. The Atlantic 10 also rates in the Top 10 in men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball in the singleyear GSR. The league is ninth nationally in men's basketball, graduating at a 74 percent rate, nearly seven percent above the national average. In women's basketball the league ranks sixth with an incredible 96 percent graduation rate for its 2004 freshman class, 10 percent higher than the national average. In baseball, the A-10 is tied for third nationally with an 87 percent GSR, also 10 percent higher than the national average.

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.

• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.

• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.

• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.

• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.

• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 19

Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addi-

tion, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
