Saint Joseph’s golf team heads into the 2010-11 season with a veteran core poised to improve upon its ninth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships a season ago. Under the guidance of head coach Bob Lynch, the Hawks will lean on their upperclassmen as they look to return to the top tier of the conference and the region. Leading the way for Saint Joseph’s during his first two years, Jimmy Bea enters his junior season as the team’s most consistent golfer. An All-Region selection as a rookie in 2009, Bea posted a trio of top-20 finishes last year, including tying for sixth at the Navy Fall Invitational. Averaging a team-best 76.6 strokes-per-round, Bea was Saint Joseph’s top finisher four times in 2009-10, capping the year off with a career-best tie for 17th at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Having earned individual A-10 accolades, senior Josh Webb heads into his final season looking to help the Hawks garner team recognition. Competing in eight tournaments and averaging 80 strokes-per-round, Webb improved as the season continued last year, finishing third on the team and tying for 43rd overall at the A-10 Championships. An All-Conference selection as a freshman, he has continually been a top-three finisher for the Hawks and will be depended upon doing the same this year. Playing a career-best 22 rounds in 2009-10, junior Kyle Sargis finished fourth on the team and second amongst returning golfers in scoring average at 79.4 strokes-per-round. Gaining extensive experience, he is coming off a career-high nine tournaments as a sophomore after competing in just one as a freshman. Leading the Hawks at both the Adams Cup and Princeton Invitational, he finished in a career-best tie for 17th at Princeton. Likely rounding out the five-man starting lineup are senior Jim Ridgway and junior Andrew Jaskel. A three-year letterwinner, Ridgway competed in just seven rounds as a junior, averaging 80.6 strokes-per-round. Having averaged 14 rounds per year the previous two seasons, he enters his final season as one of the more experienced Hawks and will push to be a mainstay in the starting five. Jaskel enters the season coming off career-highs in rounds (20), and events (eight). After competing in just four rounds as a rookie, he became a mainstay in the Hawks’ lineup last spring as he played in all five tournaments. Placing second for SJU at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, Jaskel finished the season on a strong note, competing at the A-10 Championships and finishing with a season-best tie for 52nd place.

Senior Josh Webb is the lone Hawk to compete in the past three Atlantic 10 Championships, finishing tied for 10th in 2009.

SEASON PREVIEW

Junior Jimmy Bea posted three top-20 finishes and was the top individual performer four times for the Hawks last season.

Setting career-bests for rounds played in 2009-10, seniors Pat Devlin and Tyler Mefford will challenge for spots in the five-man rotation. Devlin posted a season-best 71st-place finish at the Old Dominion/Seascape Invitational, while Mefford, appearing in his first collegiate matches, finished a season-best 72nd at the same event. The lone newcomer to the team, freshman Kyle Jeziorski heads to Hawk Hill after a stellar high school career at Orchard Park. One of the top high school and amateur golfers in Western New York, he set a program record with 33 medalist honors, and twice earned All-Erie County Interscholastic Conference (ECIC) All-Star honors. The top-ranked player in the ECIC as a senior, Jeziorksi ranked first of 270 golfers and posted a 35.67 strokes-per round average. Competing as an amateur, Jeziorski earned medalist honors at the 2009 New York State Golf Association Amateur Qualifier and won both the 2010 Buffalo District Golf Association Junior Stroke Play title. Saint Joseph’s opens the season at the Navy Fall Invitational, before heading to the Northeast for the Adams Cup of Rhode Island and the Hartford Invitational. Returning to Philadelphia, the Hawks begin play at the Big 5 Invitational in early October, followed by the Georgetown Hoya Invitational and the Seascape/Old Dominion Invite to wrap up the fall slate. The spring schedule opens with the 22-team field at the C&F Bank Invitational, followed by the Villanova Wildcat Invitational and the Princeton Invitational. Saint Joseph’s will then travel to the Navy Spring Invitational before finishing its regular-season schedule at the Rhode Island Invitational. Returning to the Mission Inn Resort for the third straight year for the Atlantic 10 Championships, Saint Joseph’s will look to snap Charlotte’s run of five-straight conference titles. With veteran leadership and continued growth ahead, the Hawks are set to challenge for tournament titles on a weekly basis and for the conference crown the final weekend of April.

HOME COURSES

LLANERCH COUNTRY CLUB

Scenic Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa., has served as the home for the Saint Joseph’s University golf team since 1959. Founded in 1919, Llanerch ranks as one of the finest courses in the Delaware Valley. Taking on many shapes over the years, the current 18-hole configuration opened on April 27, 1949 and measures 6,482 yards with a par of 72. Possessing a rich history, many of the nation’s best professionals have played on the Llanerch links over the past 80 years. Arguably the biggest tournament to be played on the site was the 1958 PGA Championship. Golf legend Dow Finsterwald captured the title that year with a score of 276 for 72 holes. That tournament became particularly prominent because stroke play format was used for the first time in PGA Championship history. Other notable events hosted by the course include the Philadelphia Inquirer Invitational in 1945. Byron Nelson captured the title that year, posting the seventh of 11 consecutive tournament championships. It was also the site of the 1949 USGA Women’s Amateur Championship, won by Dorothy Germain Porter. Llanerch has also served as the host of the Philadelphia Amateur Championship three times (1931, 1934 and 1998), as well as the Philadelphia Section PGA Championship five times (1940, 1941, 1942, 1943 and 1965).

BALA GOLF CLUB

Established in 1897, Bala Golf Club has once again become home to the Saint Joseph’s golf program in recent years. The Hawks began playing out of Bala Golf Club following World War II, but changed courses after several seasons, only to return to Bala in 2007. Founded by George Reach and Charles Hickman, Bala Golf Club was originally designed by Willie Tyler as a nine-hole, 2,747-yard course (par 35 1/2). Following pressure to expand to an 18-hole course, Bala Golf Club hired William S. Flynn to renovate the course in 1923. Additionally, Bala Golf Club has continued to expand, inheriting several hole locations from Philadelphia Country Club’s previous home alongside Belmont Avenue. Additionally, Bala Golf Club has been home to numerous tournaments, including the 1952 U.S. Women’s Open.

HEAD COACH

Bob Lynch

Head Coach La Salle ‘79 - 23rd Year

The 2003 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Bob Lynch is in his 23rd year at the helm of the Saint Joseph’s University golf program. During his tenure, he has led the Hawks back to prominence as one of the stronger programs in the Northeast and coached 17 Hawks to A-10 All-Conference honors and two golfers to All-Region selections. The architect of one of the region’s most demanding schedules, Lynch took the Saint Joseph’s program to the cusp of its first-ever NCAA Championship berth in 2003 as the Hawks placed second at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Crimson and Gray’s previous best effort at A-10s was third place, a feat the squad accomplished three straight seasons from 1993-95. He also guided the team to a berth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships each of those seasons. In his career as head coach, Lynch has compiled an overall record of 20 wins and 22 losses. The last dual meet competition for SJU was a 426-465 win over Lafayette at Llanerch Country Club during the 1992-93 season. Since that time, SJU has competed solely in invitational events that have taken the Hawks all over the country. A former standout at Father Judge High School, Lynch is an avid golfer. The 51-year old works for Spikes, a company that specializes in trophies and plaques. The Richboro, Pa., resident also works as an official at high school and college basketball games and works on the scorer’s table for both Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s basketball games. A 1979 graduate of La Salle University, Lynch and his wife Monica are the parents of five children: Maureen, Bob, Dan, Brian, and Jim.

Saint Joseph’s University

2009-10 YEAR IN REVIEW

The Saint Joseph’s golf team started the 2009-10 season with a strong showing at the Navy Fall Invitational, tying for seventh in the 17-team field. An All-Region selection last year, sophomore Jimmy Bea led the way for the Hawks, tying for sixth place with a one-underpar 141. The 7,244-yard Newport National Golf Club proved extremely challenging for Saint Joseph’s the following week as the Hawks finished 17th Adams Cup field. Sophomore Kyle Sargis was the top finisher for SJU, tying for 73rd in the deep field that featured several NCAA Tournament participants. Bea again led the Hawks in scoring two weeks later at the Frank Landry Invitational. Shooting a five-over-par 221 at the Spring Creek Golf Club, Bea tied for 17th as Saint Joseph’s finished 14th. Senior Zach Smith paced the team over the final three events of the fall. Playing his final year in Crimson and Gray, Smith tied for 37th at the Big 5 Classic and followed that with a tie for 20th at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational. Smith would cap the fall with a 55thplace finish at the Old Dominion/Seascape Invitational, while as a team, Saint Joseph’s continued to get inconsistent scores. Smith continued to lead the Hawks to begin the spring schedule, finishing tied for 72nd overall, while the team placed 20th at the C&F Bank Invitational in March. Sargis had his best showing of the year, tying for 17th at the Princeton Invitational, while Bea led the way the following week at the Navy Spring Invitational. Playing in the final tournament before the Atlantic 10 Championship, the Hawks again could not string together three solid rounds as they finished 14th at the Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State. Capping the season at the A-10 Championships, the Hawks were led by Bea and Smith as the pair each finished in the top-30 individually. Bea led Saint Joseph’s with a tie for 17th, while Smith capped his Hawk career with a tie for 28th place. As a team, Saint Joseph’s finished ninth, while Charlotte won its fifth straight A-10 title. Returning eight veteran letterwinnersin 2010-11, the Hawks will continue to look forward and build upon their experience from the 2009-10 season. TOP PERFORMANCES - FALL 2009

Golf has a long and storied tradition of success at Saint Joseph’s University. One of the oldest athletic programs on campus, golf debuted as a varsity sport in 1931 as it replaced baseball on Hawk Hill. The first Saint Joseph’s team - consisting of Gene Barnes, John McCormick, Frank Daly, James McCormick, Francis Gallagher, Michael Cullather, George Hartigan, Leo Murphy, John Lehman, Allen Seltzer, Joseph Stanton, and Joseph Schaeffer - played its first match in the Spring of 1931 against the University of Delaware at the Newark Country Club. After posting an 0-6 mark in their inaugural season, the Hawks claimed the program’s first victory in the fall of 1931 as they topped Philadelphia College of Osteopathy, 9-0. Saint Joseph’s also shifted its home that season from Cobbs Creek to the Cedarbrook Country Club. The golf program was disbanded from 1942-47 due to World War II, but returned to Hawk Hill in the spring of 1948. Playing out of the Bala Country Club, Saint Joseph’s return to the course was spearheaded by seniors Tom Shannon and Jack McGinty, with future SJU Hall of Famer Paul McDermitt playing out of the top flight for the Hawks. As a team, the Hawks’ greatest success came in the early 1960s and late 1970s. Saint Joseph’s won its first Middle Atlantic Conference championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1963; however the team decided not to go so that they could make extra money working summer jobs. The Hawks would again claim the MAC title in 1964 and turned in similar feats from 187578 as they were led by All-America Honorable Mention John Truax. In 1982, Saint Joseph’s became a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, with the Hawks tying for fourth in their first conference championship. Saint Joseph’s has since turned in its highest league finish in 2003, placing second overall. It previously placed third in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

HISTORY

The 1962-63 SJU golf team went 11-1 during theseason, won the Middle Atlantic Conference Title and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

The Hawks claimed their second-straight MAC title in 1964 as Bob Toner (fourth from the left) claimed medalist honors.

Left: Paul McDermitt (‘50) served as captain of the golf team and also lettered in baseball, basketball, and track and field. He graduated with more letters than anyone in Saint Joseph’s history, and was enshrined in the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. Center: Mike (‘97) and Kevin (‘99) McDermott earned Atlantic 10 AllConference honors a combined five times during their years on Hawk Hill.

THE HAWK

10

Right: Jason Buccino (‘95) was named Atlantic 10 All-Conference in 1993 and 1995. Buccino, the McDermott brothers, Mark Parisi (‘96) and Billy Stewart (‘06) are the only Hawks to receive this honor multiple times.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for 55 years. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.

During his time on Hawk Hill, McDermott also helped Saint Joseph’s to a pair of top-three finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championships as a freshman and a sophomore. Competing as SJU’s number one golfer for three seasons, McDermitt went from intramural champion as a freshman to a member of the Hawks’ first post-war golf squad in 1948.

John Truax ‘78

The first Hawk golfer to be inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame, John Truax was a member of the inaugural class in 1999. The only SJU golfer to ever earn All-America honors, Truax garnered Honorable Mention accolades as a senior in 1978. Individually, he earned a berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament as a sophomore, junior and senior and won the 1977 Fall ECAC Championship.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009 while 1,181 were named to the Spring 2010 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic AllConference recognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth and Charlotte’s Adam Gross along with Lauren Olson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louis received postgraduate scholarship grants.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This represents an increase of nine A-10 teams from last season and 25 two years ago. All 14 A-10 institutions had at least one program recognized, while twelve schools had multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored by the conference were represented by at least one A-10 program. Among the 31 Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the Patriot League had each of its member institutions receive public recognition awards for one or more programs. Among the 21 sports sponsored by the conference, women's tennis had a leaguehigh six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction in both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had a league-best 11 teams recognized in conference-sponsored sports, followed by Saint Joseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece. The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams with a perfect graduation rate according to the NCAA Graduation Success Report on Division I student-athletes. Moreover, five A-10 institutions enjoy average graduation rates of 90 percent or higher in league-sponsored sports, led by Dayton's average graduation rate of 97.38 percent. The Flyers are followed by George Washington (94.10), Xavier (93.23), La Salle (90.40) and Fordham (90.13). The A10 features eight women's tennis and women's soccer programs that enjoy a 100 percent graduation rate, while six men's teams in both golf and tennis have a 100 percent graduation rate. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball.

THE UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-squarefoot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on

campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and closeknit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a bigtime “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excel-

lent record of placing its graduates in firsttime jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
