2012-13 OUTLOOK The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team is prepped for a breakout campaign in 2012-13. After solid performances from both veterans and youngsters alike, this year's squad looks to continue its rise through the ranks of the increasingly competitive Atlantic 10. "I think we're a little deeper than we were last season," said head coach Ian Crookenden, now in his fifth year with the Hawks. Crookenden feels this added depth will allow the Hawks to field a strong lineup in every match while weathering the bumps and bruises that are customary throughout a long season. In order to improve its seed in the conference tournament, the squad must continue to earn the respect of the coaches around the league. There is only one way to do that: winning on the court. "[Improved seeding] will come if we can improve our won-lost record against teams close to us," Crookenden said. "We have to take advantage of our limited opportunities against teams in that tier of teams that we need to break into." Crookenden has a large squad at his disposal this season, but despite its size, the group is a tight-knit one, as every player knows his role and understands the importance of it. "The fall season is the time for individuals," Crookenden explained. "In the spring, the focus shifts to the team. Our mantra this spring will be `we.'" As the squad begins its journey to the Atlantic 10 Championship in Mason, Ohio, the Hawks will once again look to Alex Veronis to lead the way. Veronis returns for his senior campaign after posting nine top-flight victories last season. Junior transfer Jose Sierra will push Veronis for playing time in the top flight this season. Coming to Saint Joseph's from San Diego State, Sierra will strengthen the Hawks at the top; the one-two combination of Sierra and Veronis will allow SJU to compete for the first two singles points against any opponent. Senior captain Tommy Gates will be in the mix in the remaining flights, as will graduate student Jeff Kessler, junior Dan Barrus, and sophomores Pierre Brondeau and Max Montague. Those five players will fill out the remaining rotation slots to start the campaign; as the season wears on, the Hawks' depth will allow Crookenden to mix and match his lineup to suit the playing conditions, as well as each student-athlete's recent form. Gates tied for the team lead in singles wins last season with 11, while Kessler tied for the team lead in matches played with Barrus and Gates at 25. Montague also pulled in 11 victories, while Brondeau posted a 7-6 record in the sixth flight last season before earning a flight championship at the Penn Invitational this fall. "I think we've got a good eight or nine players that can compete at the highest level," Crookenden said. "That allows us to avoid having to go to our emerging young players and allows them to continue to develop." Also seeing time on the court this season will be seniors Kristian Broaddus and Erik Thunberg and junior co-captain Paranjay Malhotra. Freshman Andres Urrea could contribute to the singles rotation as well, but his presence will be better felt on the doubles side, where he has formed a solid partnership with Brondeau.
Senior Alex Veronis returns to the top slot in SJU’s singles lineup. He won nine first-flight singles matches last season. In addition to that coupling, the Hawks will pair Sierra and Montague, Veronis and Kessler, and Gates and Barrus to provide Crookenden with solid options for the three doubles slots in each dual match. "This way, if somebody's hurt or not feeling well, we won't miss a beat," Crookenden explained. The Hawk headman will get an idea of how his squad is shaping up early on as SJU heads to Navy to kick off the spring campaign before hosting Richmond at the Upper Dublin Sports Center. The Hawks will take on Saint Peter's, Davidson, Delaware, Fordham, and UMBC before heading to Orlando for their annual spring break trip. Those matches in Florida will be invaluable as the season shifts to more outdoor play. Home contests against Lafayette, St. Bonaventure, Bucknell, NJIT, La Salle, and St. Francis (N.Y.) as well as road trips to Lehigh, Dayton, and Duquesne, and crosstown jaunts to Drexel, Villanova, and Temple, will allow the Hawks to be firing on all cylinders for the conference championship, which gets underway on April 25. A winning record is the goal for any athletic squad, as is earning the respect of its opponents. If the Hawks are able to reach both of those goals, the last weekend in April could be a memorable one for SJU tennis.

A two-time national collegiate champion, a highly successful professional player, and a talented coach, Ian Crookenden enters his fourth season as the director and head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs at Saint Joseph’s. Coming to Hawk Hill in August of 2008, Crookenden has quickly transformed the Saint Joseph’s tennis program into one of the up-andcoming squads in the region. Crookenden has switched the focus of SJU’s schedule to a yearround format, adding several invitationals and the CROOKENDEN’S RÉSUMÉ ITA Regionals to the slate. In addition to the scheduling upgrade, he also helped spearhead the Head Coach Wake Forest (Men’s Team) 1984-96 recently-constructed SJU Tennis Complex at the Saint Joseph’s 2008-Present Maguire Campus and began the now-annual Saint Joseph’s Invitational. Director of Tennis Crookenden helped lead the Hawks to the sevPhiladelphia Cricket Club 1997-2008 enth seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship in 201112, their highest seeding during his tenure. COACHING STAFF The following season, Crookenden became just the second player in UCLA history to claim two NCAA Doubles titles. Teaming with Charlie Pasarell, the duo earned the sixth national doubles title for the Bruins. Serving as captain in 1967, Crookenden earned his third straight AllAmerican accolade, helping UCLA to a 12-2 mark and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships. Following his collegiate career, the New Zealand native excelled as a profesional player, competing at the sports’ highest levels: Wimbledon, the US Open and the French Open. Crookenden was also twice selected to the New Zealand Davis Cup team. Crookenden returned to the collegiate game in 1984 as head men's tennis coach and indoor tennis club director at Wake Forest University. Coaching in the competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, Crookenden posted a 160-180 record and helped nine players earn All-ACC honors from 1984 to 1996. In 1988, Crookenden earned a first in Wake Forest program history as he coached the doubles pair of Dallwitz and Mark Greenan to AllAmerican honors. After guiding the two to the ACC No. 1 Doubles Flight title, Crookenden lent his playing experience to the duo as they upset the field and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships. Adding to his stellar coaching streak, Crookenden’s ability to recruit on an international level shined in 1990 as Frenchman Gilles Ameline became the first Demon Deacon to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships and earn All-American honors for singles competitions. Stepping away from the collegiate game following the 1996 season, Crookenden took over as director of tennis at the Philadelphia Cricket Club from 1997 until August 2008. While there, he ran both the boys and girls’ International Junior Grass Court Championships. An active member of the United States Tennis Association and the United States Professional Tennis Association, Crookenden was recognized for his collegiate accomplishments in 1997 as he was inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Hall of Fame. A contributing author of two guides published by the USPTA, he currently resides in Blue Bell, Pa., with his wife Dianne.
Andres Mejia Graduate Assistant Bethel (Tenn.) ‘10 – Second Season
Returning to head coach Ian Crookenden’s staff for his second season in 2012-13 is graduate assistant Andres Mejia. A native of Colombia, Mejia played his collegiate tennis at Bethel University in Tennessee and brings a wealth of high-level playing experience to the Saint Joseph’s tennis program. During his collegiate career, Mejia achieved a singles ranking of 18 and a doubles ranking of 13 from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. He also earned three consecutive All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles in from 2007 to 2009. Prior to his stint at Bethel, Mejia played in Futures events across South America and took part in events in France. He has also been ranked #1 in the United States Tennis Association’s Men’s Open rankings for the Middle States region. Currently pursuing a master’s degree in international marketing at Saint Joseph’s, Mejia graduated from Bethel in 2010 with a degree in business management. Before coming to Hawk Hill, he worked for two years coaching elite players at the Moorestown Tennis Club in New Jersey. 2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 4
SJU TENNIS COMPLEX Opened in the fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home. The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's 65-acre footprint. Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s construction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team compiled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-09. Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the nearby Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

2011-12 YEAR IN REVIEW The 2011-12 Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team posted a double-digit win total for the first time in five years and earned the seventh seed in the 2012 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship, its highest positioning in the league table in a number of years. Junior Alex Veronis once again paced the squad, pulling in Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honors for the second consecutive season. Without Veronis, who studied abroad during the fall semester, the Hawks stumbled out of the gate and dropped their only fall dual match, to Fairleigh Dickinson. Senior captain Jeff Kessler had some success at the SJU Invitational, however, reaching the semifinals of the first singles flight draw. Head coach Ian Crookenden has made it a point to schedule tough opposition for his club, and as the spring semester rolled around, the Hawks once again found themselves taking on fierce competition in both
conference and local opponents. After a rough stretch to start out 2012, SJU bounced back during its annual spring break trip to Orlando. In Florida, the Hawks split four matches, taking down Creighton and South Dakota State for their second and third wins of the season, respectively. Saint Joseph’s rounded into form in mid-March, reeling off five straight wins. The Hawks topped Lehigh and Villanova at home by identical 4-3 scores before going on the road and securing 4-3 wins at Fordham and NJIT. SJU then headed to La Salle and earned a 6-1 decision over the Explorers to stretch the winning streak to five before a tough 4-3 defeat at Drexel ended the run. The loss to the Dragons started a three-match skid for the Hawks, but Saint Joseph’s righted the ship with a pair of wins at league foe St. Bonaventure and Lafayette to close out the regular season. Unfortunately, the Crimson and Gray’s stay at the Atlantic 10 Championship was brief as the seventhseeded Hawks fell to Dayton, 4-3, in the first round. Veronis led the squad in doubles wins and tied for the team lead in combined victories on the way to his second consecutive All-Conference Second Team performance. His 23 combined victories tied him fellow junior Tommy Gates for the best mark on the squad. Gates and freshman Max Montague each checked in with 11 singles victories to lead the Hawks, while Veronis’ 14 doubles wins were one ahead of senior Peter Cognetti (13) and two in front of Gates and sophomore Dan Barrus (12).

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Xavier University. In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating the sweeping conference realignment issues, adding Butler University and Virginia Commonwealth University, both of which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league was declared the “winner” of conference realignment by several media outlets, arguably strengthening the league to its best-ever lineup with a record 16 members institutions. The additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 16 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 82 million people within its geographic footprint of nine states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor
Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 studentathlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized a record 2,728 student-athletes in 2011-12. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2011-12, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Dayton’s Yvonne Marten, Jennifer Nalepa from Saint Louis, Marissa Norman of Rhode Island and Charlotte’s Macey Ruble received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 has 56 of the more than 950 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. The Atlantic 10 Conference ranks fourth in number of teams publically recognized by the NCAA and fifth in overall APR average among all 32 Division I Conferences with a 981 average. The league boasted 40 squads with perfect scores and 104 teams with a score of 990 or better. In total, 188 A-10 teams were at or above the national average, representing 70 percent of all A-10 teams. Of the 21 championship sponsored sports in the Atlantic 10, 19 had a sport average higher than the national average. There are six sports (field hockey, women's cross country, lacrosse, women's swimming & diving, women's indoor track & field and women's outdoor track & field) in which every A-10 team in that sport is above the national average. The Atlantic 10 boasted a third-place ranking in the single-year Graduation Success Rate (GSR) among all Division I leagues. Measured in a six-year window, 89 percent of freshman enrolling in an A-10 institution in 2004 graduated. Twelve of the league's institutions were above the national four-year GSR average of 8o percent and five of those programs, Dayton, George Washington, Richmond, Saint Joseph's and Xavier are all over 90 percent. The Atlantic 10 also rates in the Top 10 in men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball in the single-year GSR. The league is ninth nationally in men's basketball, graduating at a 74 percent rate, nearly seven percent above the national average. In women's basketball the league ranks sixth with an incredible 96 percent graduation rate for its 2004 freshman class, 10 percent higher than the national average. In baseball, the A10 is tied for third nationally with an 87 percent GSR, also 10 percent higher than the national average.

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.
• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.
• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.
• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.
• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.
• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.
The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 21
SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.
THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows stu-
dents to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.
IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.
SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time
jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
