shopbylayby.co.uk Design competition From shipping container to layby shop – design a retail outlet and win £1,000 End date: September 5th Prize: £1,000 Our vision Welcome to Shopbylayby. Putting Cornish food on the map, supporting farmers and promoting local produce. There is already a network of local producers, selling quality produce at a reasonable price from laybys all over Cornwall. These layby traders operate on the margins of legality and soon may be forced to shut up shop for the final time. What if these traders were offered a unit to trade from? Somewhere where they could attractively present their food, somewhere with refrigerated displays, that stocked all the essentials that you usually have to queue at a supermarket for? Would you drive out of your way to a supermarket or support a local producer? We are proposing a network of branded retail outlets in laybys, on busy main roads that are open when you want them to be, stock the essential items you need, at a quality you’d expect and at a price that is competitive. The units will be attractive, have water, electric and sanitation. The producers will possess food-handling certificates and you’ll be able to buy milk, bread, cheese, potatoes, apples and even toilet roll. You’ll also be able to order and pay online, collecting your food later. There’ll be less food miles and you won’t be driving out of your way, the food will come from a nearby network of farms and not from a food depot hundreds of miles away and there’ll be little wasteful food packaging. The concept of Shopbylayby could take the UK by storm. Your Design We have purchased a second-hand shipping container for the retail unit. Help us turn the Shopbylay shipping container into a shop by designing the following: - Shopbylayby: logo/brand identity - exterior design, to be painted on the container (20 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet 6 inches high) - interior retail design; design a fully functioning retail experience in the confines of a 20 feet x 8 feet x 8’6” shipping container. The design is to include a cashier desk, shelving, storage and refrigerated units. The units will stock fruit, vegetables, flowers, bread, dairy produce as well as a selection of everyday household items like toilet paper and cleaning products.

More details on the container, the items on sale and the approximate dimensions of some of the storage/display units are available. The shipping container that will be converted into a shop is being stored on a farm at Helston and is available for viewing.

It is crucial that the branding be designed in line with the Shopbylayby vision. Below are some key words and phrases that best describe this: -Simple and clear -The logo needs to be easily visible for road users. -Competitive -The supermarket giants manage to appeal to all. Shopbylayby needs to do the same! -Local -The business will be selling local produce so it is paramount this is conveyed in some way. -Modern yet sympathetic -The overall brand, whilst being contemporary, must fit in with its rural surroundings. Brief Please submit the following by email no later than 5pm on Monday, September 5th. - Logo/brand sheet(s) - Visuals of shop exterior and interior Shortlisted design teams may be invited to an event to present their design. The winning design will be awarded a cash prize of ÂŁ1,000 and see their design used for a Shopbylayby prototype. If the Shopbylayby business idea is a success, then there will be further design opportunities for the winning team. The competition is open to individuals, teams and companies.
