May 21, 2011 (WEEK 10; MLS Game 92)

The San Jose Earthquakes and New England Revolution face off in an intra-conference tussle when the clubs meet Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes won for the first time at their Buck Shaw Stadium home last weekend, a 3-0 defeat of the Columbus Crew. The Revolution have posted back-to-back shutouts, last a 1-0 home win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. REFEREE: Yader Reyes. Their last win in Foxborough, in 2005, was the end of a seven-game unbeaten streak in New England for the Quakes, with six wins and a draw dating back to 2001. Since, the Revs have two of three (with one draw).  The Revolution’s win at Buck Shaw Stadium in 2009 was their first in northern California since 2000, when they defeated San Jose 2-1 at Spartan Stadium. The Quakes won four of the six games in between, with two draws.  Coaches record: Frank Yallop v NE: P15 W8 L5 D2 … Steve Nicol vs. SJ: P15 W3 L8 D4 SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes snapped their winless run at six games with a breakout performance, rolling to a 3-0 win against the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes have 9 points from 9 games on the season, sitting in eighth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH  The Earthquakes took control of the match in the second half with three goals in the space of 12 minutes. San Jose opened the scoring when Ryan Johnson put in a cross from the left wing and Chris Wondolowski snuck in at the back post to volley home.  The Quakes doubled the lead in the 59th minute when Steven Lenhart powered a header toward goal off a Joey Gjertsen corner kick that bounced off the back of Brandon McDonald and into the goal.  Three minutes later, the lead was 3-0. Bobby Convey found Khari Stephenson through a dummy played by Lenhart as he was clattered into from behind, and Stephenson lashed home a shot from outside the box.  Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop made six changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Empire Field. There was an entirely new back four of Chris Leitch, Brandon McDonald, Jason Hernandez and Bobby Convey for Steven Beitashour, Ike Opara, Bobby Burling and Ramiro Corrales, and Joey Gjertsen and Khari Stephenson came into the midfield for Scott Sealy and Sam Cronin.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Chris Leitch, Brandon McDonald (sent off 79), Jason Hernandez, Bobby Convey - Joey Gjertsen (Anthony Ampaipitakwong 61), Brad Ring (Sam Cronin 72), Khari Stephenson, Ryan Johnson - Chris Wondolowski (Ike Opara 82), Steven Lenhart.

TEAM NEWS  The Earthquakes’ win against Columbus was their first at Buck Shaw Stadium this season, previously the only team in MLS without a win on their home ground (Sporting Kansas City still has yet to play at home).  “It’s been coming for a while now. We have put some good performances together the past 3-4 games but we hadn’t gotten the results,” Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop said. “Columbus played well, but we scored three good goals. I am very pleased for the whole squad, not just the guys that played tonight but everybody in that locker room. They put a lot of work in the past few weeks.”  Chris Wondolowski moved into a tie for third place in the MLS Golden Boot race with his fifth goal of the season against Columbus – his third game in a row with a goal.  “Our confidence just keeps building; we have confidence in our ability in our play. I think we found our fight. Our tactical and technical ability is showing,” Wondolowski said. “It’s all coming together and we’re really happy with what we’ve done over the last couple of games. Tonight was a good building block for us.”  The three goals scored by San Jose were a season-high and only the second, third and fourth goals the Quakes have scored in the second half this season.  “We weren't traveling with the ball much. They were forcing us to knock long balls up to Lenny [Lenhart] and Wondo [Wondolowski],” Yallop said of the first half. “When we did that, I didn't think Khari [Stephenson] and Brad [Ring] were squeezing, I didn't think the back four was getting out quick enough, then the ball was dropping down, then there was a big gap, and then they were running at us.”  Ryan Johnson was credited with an assist for a second consecutive game while Steven Lenhart was credited with his first – which at first appeared might be a goal, a header that bounced off defender Brandon McDonald on its way to goal.  "I think you've got to give a lot of credit to Lenhart and Ryan Johnson," McDonald said. "Lenhart puts his body up there, his body on the line the whole game, and R.J. running down that left wing, it's trouble. I think they were doing well, and Wondo running off that, it's a great combination for us."  With Lenhart taking over a starting role in attack for the last three games, after overcoming a hamstring injury suffered in preseason, and Chris Wondolowski serving as his partner in a twin-striker setup, Johnson has moved to a wide midfield spot for the last two games. He started the first five in attack, before moving to the substitutes’ bench.  “Guys that have watched us over the last three years [know] Ryan does well when he’s drifting wide and he’s making his own sort of chances rather than us trying to find him all the time,” Yallop said. “He’s better at just kind of falling onto the ball rather than us [using him as a] focal point, trying to get him the ball. NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION The New England Revolution recorded a second consecutive shutout, this time for a 1-0 victory against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday evening at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution have 13 points from 10 matches, in a three-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  The game's lone goal came four minutes after halftime. Benny Feilhaber collected a loose ball just inside the Vancouver penalty area and was taken down by Wes Knight. From the resulting penalty, Shalrie Joseph coolly slotted home into the lower left hand corner.  Revolution head coach Steve Nicol made two changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Colorado. Darrius Barnes came in at left back as Ousmane Dabo dropped out through injury, and Zak Boggs returned to the starting XI on the right flank in place of Kenny Mansally.  NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (4-1-4-1): Matt Reis - Kevin Alston, Ryan Cochrane, A.J. Soares, Darrius Barnes - Stephen McCarthy - Zak Boggs (Sainey Nyassi 74), Shalrie Joseph, Benny Feilhaber, Chris Tierney Rajko Lekic (Kheli Dube 81). TEAM NEWS  After going eight games without a shutout, the Revolution defense has now kept back-to-back clean sheets and has not allowed a goal in 222 minutes.  “It’s great. I mean, we’re going to have to win games 1-0 if we want to be a great team,” said goalkeeper Matt Reis. “There were times tonight when we were really, really good. But at times toward the end, we made it a little difficult on ourselves.  Shalrie Joseph scored his fourth goal of the season – his second from a penalty kick – to give the Revolution the win against Vancouver. The four goals already match his league total from last season, after he scored a career-high eight in 2009.  “We don’t concentrate enough and we don’t take of the ball, but we had some good possession a little bit tonight and we’re going to work on it coming up this week and try to be better in San Jose,”Joseph said. “But it’s all about inconsistency. That’s what’s killing us right now.  It was the first goal for the Revolution in 236 minutes, the last an 83rd-minute Rajko Lekic game-winner against Sporting Kansas City on April 23.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

     

“The first half was certainly not our best, as far as I was concerned,” said Revs boss Steve Nicol. “When you give the ball away, you only put yourself under pressure, and we just encouraged them in the first half, without a shadow of a doubt. The second half was better ... but we’re looking to do better, and we won the game.” Rajko Lekic suffered a left knee contusion and had to come off, replaced by Kheli Dube. Lekic is listed as questionable for the San Jose match. With Darrius Barnes filling in at left back for a second time this season, Chris Tierney was able to move forward to a left-sided midfield role for a second time this season, as Marko Perovic missed his third straight game. “I don't know if we'll really have too much to build off on the performance,” Tierney said. “It wasn't the prettiest win and we kind of had to grind it out, but the three points were definitely crucial. It was a game we felt like was a must-win at this stage of the season. We'll take the three and move on.” A theme in recent weeks, as the Revolution have gone to a five-man midfield anchored by Joseph, Feilhaber and McCarthy in the middle, is to ensure the wide players operate more as out-and-out wingers. “Once crosses start coming in, their backs have to step out wide and it opens up space in the middle,” Tierney said. “We're happy to do that because we've got one of the best central midfield pairings in the league. If they want to step out on us, fine, we'll let Shalrie and Benny play. If not, we'll keep swinging them [into the area].”

Revolution Leaders vs. Earthquakes Revolution forward Kheli Dube has scored two goals in five career appearances against the Quakes, including the game-winner in the 2009 home opener for San Jose … Midfielder Shalrie Joseph has tallied two assists in 10 career appearances … New England goalkeeper Matt Reis has four wins, two ties and two shutouts in his career. Wondolowski Moves into Fourth Place All Time on the Quakes’ Scoring Charts San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski continues to inch up the franchise’s all-time scoring charts. Wondo scored two goals last week, one against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday and another against the Columbus Crew on Saturday, giving him 26 with the Quakes. Those goals moved Wondolowski past Brian Ching for No. 4 on the club’s all-time scoring chart. Up next for the Danville, Calif. native is Dwayne De Rosario, who scored 27 for the team from 2001-2005. The career leader for the Quakes is Ronald Cerritos, who notched 61 from 1997-2001 and in 2005. Johnson Tallies First Points of the Season Earthquakes forward Ryan Johnson earned his first points of the season last week with a pair of assists. Against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday, his perfect low cross from the left was craftily back-heeled in by Chris Wondolowski. He again partnered up with Wondo on Saturday by swinging in another cross from the left that was volleyed home from close range by the Quakes striker. Johnson has 13 career assists with the Quakes. Brad Ring Notches First Career Point San Jose central midfielder Brad Ring tallied his first career point on Saturday against the Columbus Crew. Ring played the ball out wide to Ryan Johnson on the left, who in turn crossed into the area for Chris Wondolowski to volley home in the 50th minute, with the midfielder. Ring has made 15 appearances in his three years with the Earthquakes, and made his seventh career start on Saturday. Lenhart Earns First Point with San Jose Off-season acquisition Steven Lenhart earned his first point with the San Jose Earthquakes after recording an assist against his former team, the Columbus Crew, on Saturday. While Lenhart was originally credited with a goal, Major League Soccer later changed the official ruling because the ball deflected off teammate Brandon McDonald’s backside before going into the net. Lenhart thus earned credit for an assist after heading the ball towards the Crew goal. The Quakes went on to win the game 3-0 with additional goals from Chris Wondolowski and Khari Stephenson. Busch Among MLS Career Leaders List for Shutouts Jon Busch is No. 8 on the MLS career shutouts list with 55 after his clean sheet this past weekend against Columbus. The Earthquakes’ starting goalkeeper has recorded nine clean sheets in San Jose. He notched 21 shutouts during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire and had 25 in five seasons with the Columbus Crew (2002-06). Scoring First under Yallop During Frank Yallop's first tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes were one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-1 from 2001-03 when scoring the first goal of the game. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 21 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. Yallop's team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010 and so far in 2011 is 2-1-1 when netting the first goal. Halftime Success The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a half-time lead after beating FC Dallas on March 26 and tying against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on May 11. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Earthquakes are 66-1-14 in games when leading at the half, including impressive marks of 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 8-0-1 in 2003, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 7-0-3 in 2005. Despite holding a halftime lead on May 10, 2008 vs. Columbus, the Quakes fell 3-2. That game marked the team's first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime lead. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 89-6-20 in their last 115 matches when scoring first. They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, went undefeated last year with a 12-0-2 record and are 2-1-1 this season. In 2005, San Jose went undefeated at 14-0-5 when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 25-2-2 in 2001 and 2002 when finding the back of the net first. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. The team continued that trend in 2003, possessing an 11-0-1 mark in the regular season when they scored the first goal. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the top mark in MLS. The Quakes gave up their lead and lost to Los Angeles on July 4, 2004 for the first time since July 27, 2002 against Kansas City. TEAM INFORMATION VS. SAN JOSE • Saturday marks the 34th all-time meeting between two of the original MLS teams … San Jose leads the all-time, regular-season series between the two clubs, 17-11-5 • Saturday’s match will begin the two-game, regular-season series between the Revs and Earthquakes … the teams will meet in the return game at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 3 • The Revs are just 5-8-3 all-time in away matches against San Jose • The Revolution hasn’t fared very well when the Earthquakes visit Foxborough, going 6-9-2 in 17 all-time matches ... the Revs have had an even tougher time with the Earthquakes since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, with a 2-5-2 record and have been outscored, 12-5 inside the stadium … however, New England is undefeated at home in each of the last three games against San Jose with a 4-1 scoring edge • The Revolution is 3-2-1 against San Jose since the team returned to the league in 2008 • In the 33 all-time meetings between the two clubs, San Jose has outscored New England, 6142 … there have been 12 shutouts recorded in the series, with six posted by each club • New England has shut out San Jose once in each of the past three seasons, a 2-0 win in Foxborough on May 17, 2008, a 1-0 win at San Jose on April 21, 2009 and a 0-0 draw at home on May 15, 2010 … the Earthquakes retaliated with a 2-0 shutout of their own on April 17, 2010 and then equaled the Revs in the 0-0 draw in Foxborough later in the season • The Revolution and Earthquakes have never met outside the MLS regular season PLAYER NOTES VS. SAN JOSE • The only current Revs player to have scored goals against San Jose while playing for the Revolution is Kheli Dube (two goals in five appearances) … Dube scored his first career goal in his first career start on May 17, 2008 in the Revs’ 2-0 win at Gillette (the other goal was an own goal) … the Zimbabwean then scored the only goal of the game in the Revolution’s seasonopening, 1-0 win at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 21, 2009 • Shalrie Joseph is the only current Revs player to record assists – two of them – against San Jose • Marko Perović made his first-ever MLS start against the Earthquakes when the teams met on April 17, 2010, at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. • Matt Reis is 3-3-2 in his Revolution career against San Jose with a 1.13 goals against average and two shutouts … overall, he is 4-5-2 against the Earthquakes in his entire career • Ryan Cochrane is a two-time former member of the Earthquakes … he began his career with San Jose in 2004 and played two seasons, before moving to Houston with the team in 2006 … San Jose selected him in the 2007 Expansion Draft and then he played one-and-a-half seasons with the Quakes before being traded back to Houston in the summer of 2009 … ironically, he has never appeared against his former team LAST MEETING New England 0, San Jose 0 -- May 15, 2010 (Gillette Stadium) The last meeting between the New England Revolution and San Jose Earthquakes wasn’t short on action, but it was short on goals. Although both teams were dangerous in the attacking third, neither club found a way to make the decisive breakthrough and the result was a 0-0 draw. Senegalese midfielder Joseph Niouky came closest for the Revs when he struck the post with an optimistic 35-yard blast in the 62nd minute. Six minutes later, Revolution goalkeeper Preston Burpo – who made six saves to preserve his second shutout of the season – stoned Earthquakes defender Bobby Burling’s breakaway attempt with a brave body block.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION AT SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES

MISCELLANEOUS TEAM NOTES GO WEST, YOUNG MEN … AGAIN The Revolution will be making its fourth West Coast trek this season when it heads to San Jose for Saturday’s match … the Revs will be the first East Coast team to make their fourth trip to the West Coast … only Toronto has made more than two trips west (three) … the Revs opened the season at LA on March 20, then traveled to Vancouver on April 6 and Chivas USA on April 30. CAN THE REVS BE THE FIRST? With Chivas USA picking up a 3-2 win at New York on Sunday, the Goats became the first team to travel three time zones and pick up a win during the 2011 season ... on Saturday night at San Jose, the Revs now have a chance to be the first East Coast team to go to the Pacific time zone and pick up a win three time zones away ... entering Sunday’s Chivas USA-New York games, Eastern and Pacific time zone teams were a combined 0-14-12 when playing teams on the opposite coast ... the Revs contributed an 0-1-2 mark to that overall record with draws at LA and Vancouver, and a loss at Chivas USA. SEARCHING FOR FIRST PACIFIC WIN SINCE 2009 Through three West Coast matches so far this season, New England is 0-1-2 with draws at LA and Vancouver and a loss at Chivas USA … the Revs have not won on the West Coast since a 1-0 victory at Seattle on Aug. 20, 2009 … since that game, New England has gone 0-5-2 (including an 0-4-0 record in 2010) in West Coast games. BUSY STRETCH – AND MUCH TRAVELING – AHEAD Starting with Saturday’s game at San Jose, the Revs will play three games in eight days, with a U.S. Open Cup Play-In match sandwiched between league contests at San Jose (May 21) and against LA (May 28) … with two of those games on the road, the Revolution will travel approximately 7,910 air miles in eight days … on Thursday, May 19, the Revs will fly to San Francisco and then return on Sunday … the team will then turn around and fly direct to Kansas City for the play-in match on Tuesday, and return through Chicago on Thursday. COCHRANE TO FINALLY FACE OLD TEAM? Ryan Cochrane began his MLS career in San Jose and played all or parts of four seasons with the Earthquakes … he also spent all or parts of four other seasons in Houston, yet he has never faced his former and original team … Saturday’s match could be the first time in Cochrane’s eight-year MLS career that he plays against the team where he started. “HOMECOMING” FOR TWO REVS Two members of the Revolution – Ryan Cochrane and Stephen McCarthy – played collegiately at Santa Clara University – and at Buck Shaw Stadium, where the team will face the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening … Cochrane (2001-03) was a three-time AllAmerican, while McCarthy (2006-08) was the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year in 2006 and a three-time All-WCC honoree … both players spent just three seasons at Santa Clara – Cochrane leaving after his junior year and entering MLS through the Nike Project-40 program, and McCarthy transferring to North Carolina for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. DEFENSIVE LOCKDOWN IN RECENT WEEKS After a season-worst 3-0 loss at Chivas USA on April 30, the Revs’ defense has gone into lockdown mode, posting back-to-back shutouts in the team’s last two matches … the team’s back-to-back shutouts are the team’s first since Aug. 7, 2010 (1-0 win against D.C.) and Aug. 14, 2010 (1-0 win against Houston) … against defending MLS Cup champion Colorado on May 7, the Revs’ defense surrendered just one shot on goal from nine total shots … Saturday night against Vancouver, New England allowed 11 shots … the Revs head into Saturday’s game at San Jose riding a 212-minute shutout streak. REIS RETURNS TO FORM Matt Reis has backboned the team’s last two shutouts and in the process has moved his career shutout total to 61, spanning his 14-year MLS career … he is seventh in MLS history in career shutouts, one behind Tony Meola (62) and three shutouts from a top-five ranking (Pat Onstad, 64) … Reis will enter Saturday’s game with a 200-minute shutout streak intact … his personal streak began in the 70th minute against Kansas City on April 23, and then includes the May 7 Colorado match and the May 14 Vancouver match … he sat out the Chivas USA match on April 30 while resting a sprained left shoulder. SCORELESS STREAK SNAPPED, TOO Shalrie Joseph’s 49th-minute penalty kick on Saturday snapped the Revolution’s 236-minute scoreless streak that ran back to the April 23 Sporting Kansas City match … before Joseph’s successful PK attempt on Saturday, the last Revs goal came from Rajko Lekic in the 83rd minute against Sporting KC … New England had been held scoreless at Chivas USA (April 30) and against Colorado (May 7), and the 236-minute scoreless streak is the sixth-longest in MLS this season. JOSEPH IS NEW PK LEADER With his successful penalty kick on Saturday night against Vancouver, Shalrie Joseph claimed sole possession of first place in the Revs’ career penalty kick list with 10 … he en-

tered the game with nine career penalty kicks, tied with former captain Steve Ralston who also had nine in his nine-year Revolution career (2002-10) … Joseph is now 2-for-2 on the season and 4-for-4 spanning the last three seasons. LINEUP CHANGES PERSIST Steve Nicol deployed his 10th different lineup in 10 games on Saturday evening against Vancouver … twice Nicol has used the same 10 field players as the previous starting lineup – against Portland (April 2) and at Vancouver (April 6), but the goalkeepers were different in both games: Matt Reis vs. Portland and Bobby Shuttleworth at Vancouver … in no game this season has the same starting 11 trotted out for consecutive games, or even multiple games. VERS-A-TIERNEY Chris Tierney continues to show his versatility for the Revolution … Tierney has now played five different positions in all competitions this season: left back, left midfield, center midfield, defensive center midfield and center back (USOC qualifier) … in 2010, Tierney led all MLS players with seven positions played during the season, adding right back and attacking center midfield to the list above ... most recently, Tierney made his first start of the season on the left wing - his preferred position - last Saturday against Vancouver. NEW TEAM CONSECUTIVE APPEARANCES LEADER Kevin Alston is now the team’s active leader in consecutive appearances with nine … the third-year defender missed the team’s first match of the season at LA on March 20, but has started every game since … the streak is Alston’s second-longest appearance streak in his career as he went 33 consecutive games including playoffs (31 straight regular-season matches) between May 9, 2009 and May 5, 2010 ... no other Revs player has a longer current consecutive appearances streak. NO “EVERYDAY MEN” IN THE RANKS The Revs do not have a single player who has appeared in all 10 games so far this season ... four players - Kevin Alston, Shalrie Joseph, Stephen McCarthy and A.J. Soares - have each appeared in nine games this year ... Alston missed the season opener because of a hamstring strain, while Joseph and Soares have missed games while serving red-card suspensions ... McCarthy missed the Chivas USA match on April 30 after playing two games in four days (vs. Sporting Kansas City on April 23 and at D.C. United for a U.S. Open Cup Play-In on April 26) ... New England and Vancouver are the only two teams in MLS that do not have a single player who has appeared in every one of the teams’ games. OPEN CUP PLAY-IN NEXT WEEK The Revolution will travel to face Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday, May 25, at the Blue Valley Recreational Complex in Overland Park, Kan., for the right to enter the proper U.S. Open Cup bracket … the Revs defeated D.C. United, 3-2, in the second round of MLS qualifying for the main Open Cup bracket on Tuesday, April 26, in Boyds, Md. … kickoff of the Revs-Sporting qualifying match is set for 8:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. in Kansas City), and the winner will move on to the third round (round of 16) in the main U.S. Open Cup bracket, joining seven other MLS teams.
