SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs COLUMBUS CREW BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. April 13, 2014 (WEEK 6, MLS Game #52) 12 noon PT (UniMás; CSN-CA+; TWCSN-OH) A pair of clubs looking to rebound from tough losses meet on Sunday afternoon when the San Jose Earthquakes play host to the Columbus Crew on Sunday afternoon. The Quakes are coming off their first home loss in more than a year, their last match a 2-1 defeat by the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Crew are coming off their first defeat of the new season, falling 2-0 at home to Toronto FC last weekend. REFEREE: Kevin Stott. The Quakes are in ninth place in the Western Conference with 1 point from 3 games. LAST MATCH  The Revolution were handed the lead on 35 minutes with their first goal of the season when San Jose defender Víctor Bernárdez knocked the ball into the Quakes’ net while trying to make a last-ditch clearance, after fellow defender Jordan Stewart had first pushed the ball past goalkeeper Jon Busch when he came off the line.  But the Earthquakes pulled even in the 69th minute, when Chris Wondolowski collected a deflected cross from Cordell Cato and cut a tightly angled shot across the face of goal from four yards, tucking it neatly inside the far post.  There were more late dramatics for San Jose -- but this time from the visitors. Lee Nguyen raced onto a long pass down the left wing from Scott Caldwell, then cut inside a defender Clarence Goodson before beating Busch from 14 yards out for the game-winner.  Quakes boss Mark Watson made two changes to the team that fell 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park. Brandon Barklage and Jordan Stewart came into the team, in place of Shaun Francis and Atiba Harris.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Brandon Barklage (Yannick Djalo 79), Clarence Goodson, Victor Bernardez, Jordan Stewart - Cordell Cato, Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi (JJ Koval 84), Sam Cronin, Shea Salinas - Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart (Alan Gordon 78). TEAM NEWS  The Quakes saw their MLS home undefeated streak come to an end after 17 games, their first home loss since a 2-0 defeat by Real Salt Lake in the opening game of the 2013 season. The 17 games tied the sixth-longest home unbeaten streak in league history.  “We had all the momentum at the end, and I think this team is built to push for the win,” Quakes coach Mark Watson said. “It was very disappointing to see the goal go in and lose the game.”  Said defender Clarence Goodson: “We were really flirting with disaster. There were four or five plays that we were numbers down in the last 10 minutes. Sometimes you get fortunate and you don’t give up goals. We’ve

scored a lot of late goals, and finally we gave one up late, and that’s kind of the way we play. It’s kind of all-ornothing, and we got punished for that.” There was a serious injury blow out of the New England match, as forward Steven Lenhart suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee that could put him out of action for up to a month. “He’s a big part of our team, of our locker room,” Chris Wondolowski said. “I feel gutted any time anyone goes down. I’m very close to Steven, and I don’t like seeing him go down, especially with the knee. ... He seems to be very optimistic about it, and I like that. I wouldn’t expect anything else from him.” Yannick Djalo made his MLS and Earthquakes debut, coming on for the final 11 minutes, and could feature in the Columbus match. Another possibility is newcomer Billy Schuler, in his first MLS season after two years spent in Sweden, following a college career at North Carolina. “We look at all our options,” Watson said. “I think this team is built a certain way, or has been in the past. We play with a target player and Wondo, essentially. But we look at a lot of different situations. It may be a shift in terms of those types of players, or it may be a shift for a specific game, that one option may cause them some problems.” Chris Wondolowski scored his second goal of the season. He and center back Victor Bernárdez have accounted for all four of the Earthquakes goal in league play this season. “The talent, the mentality, the effort is all there. We’ve just got to make sure that it doesn’t take a goal to wake us up. We’ve got to make sure that from minute one, we’re ready to go,” said Wondolowski. “And we’ve got to play a full 90 minutes. We can’t play 10 minutes here, turn off and then try to pick it back up whenever we can. It’s got to be a lot better.”

COLUMBUS CREW The Columbus Crew saw their season-opening winning streak come to halt after three games, falling 2-0 to Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon at Crew Stadium. The Crew sit in a tie atop the Eastern Conference, with 9 points from 4 matches. LAST MATCH  Toronto FC opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Mark Bloom found a streaking Michael Bradley down the right side of the Columbus defense, and he took goalkeeper Steve Clark by surprise on a shot from a tight angle near the endline, putting it through the 'keeper's legs and into the far side netting.  TFC then put the game out of reach in the 85th minute when substitute forward Issey Nakajima-Farran found space on the counterattack and clipped home a Justin Morrow cross from the center of the box.  Crew head coach Gregg Berhalter made no changes to the team that got a late 2-1 win against Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field.  COLUMBUS CREW (4-2-3-1): Steve Clark - Josh Williams (Justin Meram 67), Michael Parkhurst, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Waylon Francis - Wil Trapp, Tony Tchani (Jairo Arrieta 74) - Federico Higuain, Hector Jimenez, Bernardo Anor - Dominic Oduro (Ethan Finlay 81). TEAM NEWS  The Crew went down to defeat for the first time with Gregg Berhalter in charge, their first league losses since losing the final three games of the 2013 season, including the season finale at home to New England.  “There’s a lot to learn from this game, but having said that, this is this group’s first loss. Since how long have we’ve been together? There will be more losses but this is our first loss,” said Berhalter. “This is a good test for us as a group to how we respond, how we get back and how the hunger is back there again. I’m looking forward to the response.”  Said goalkeeper Steve Clark: “He's our leader; we respect him, and we listen to him. He says we're going to learn from it, and we are. He'll be leading us next week, and it's a long season. The first loss of the year is always a tough one, but we've got 30 more games, and if we play like we did in the second half, we'll be ready to go.”  Through the opening four matches, Berhalter has used just 12 players as starters. Ten have remained the same; only Dominic Oduro and Jairo Arrieta have traded off, making two starts each as the lone striker.  Justin Meram came off the bench for a fourth consecutive match, while Ethan Finlay also made his second consecutive substitute appearance.  “We're a young team, and it's important to learn lessons like this," Clark said. "You've got to come out and take the game; you've got to earn it.” Said defender Josh Williams: “It definitely wasn't Gregg's fault. As players we take responsibility for that, and I think it's definitely going to pick up this week.”  For a second time in as many weeks, the Crew entered the halftime interval down a goal, but in the end were shut out for the first time this season.  “I think we have to come out of the gate ready to go. That’s been our game all year. When you don’t do that, sometimes you get punished and obviously the first goal was a soft one by me. We will move on. It’s not the first [loss] and won’t be the last unfortunately,” said Clark.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Said Berhalter: “To me, it was the movement inside the penalty box, which we lacked and I think it’s just not on one player; it’s on a number of guys getting into the penalty box, making good, hard runs. When you look at goals that were scored, it’s from good movements inside the penalty box and we lacked that today.”

The loss snapped the Quakes 21-game unbeaten streak at Buck Shaw Stadium in all competitions. The Revolution jumped ahead in the 35th minute through an own goal. Last Game vs. Columbus Crew Earthquakes 1, Columbus Crew 1; March 16, 2013; Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio The Earthquakes pulled off another late comeback to tie the Columbus Crew 1-1 to pick up a valuable road point at Crew Stadium. Justin Morrow played the role of hero with a left-footed blast from just outside the box to level the game in the 73rd minute. Glauber scored the only goal for the Crew. San Jose is now unbeaten in its past six matches against Columbus. After a tight first half, the Quakes came out strong in the second half and created a number of chances. However, the Crew struck first through a set piece. Federico Higuain swerved in a corner kick to the near post and Glauber powered through a few defenders to head home the game’s opening goal in the 68th minute. Goodson with USMNT Goodson, 31, has 46 caps with the United States Men’s National Team. He’s played in two of the American’ three matches this year, a 60th-minute appearance in a 2-0 win against South Korea at the StubHub Center on Feb. 1 and a 59th-minute appearance in a 2-2 draw against Mexico at University of Phoenix Stadium on April 2. Goodson is aiming to make his second-straight World Cup squad after suiting up for the United States at the 2010 edition in South Africa. He has five goals during his international career and played 90 minutes in the USA’s 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship game, a 1-0 win against Panama on July 28 of last year. Goodson made his USMNT debut in a 2-0 win against Sweden on Jan. 19, 2008 at the StubHub Center. Wondolowski with USMNT Wondolowski, 31, has nine goals in 19 caps with the U.S. He has nine goals in his last 10 games dating back to his brace against Guatemala on July 6, 2013 – the infamous extra “W” game in which the USMNT kit man accidentally stitched “WONDOWLOWSKI” on the back of his jersey. Wondo has been in fine form this year, scoring both of the Americans’ goals in a 2-0 win against South Korea at the StubHub Center on Feb. 1 and the second in a 2-2 draw against Mexico at University of Phoenix Stadium on April 2. He also scored six goals during a month-long stretch in July of 2013, five of which came during the CONCACAF Gold Cup to earn Wondolowski a share of the tournament’s Golden Boot with teammate Landon Donovan and Panama’s Gabriel Torres. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. BLACK & GOLD NOTES

CREW DROPS FIRST MATCH OF SEASON IN 2-0 LOSS TO TORONTO FC The Crew fell to visiting Toronto FC 2-0 behind goals from Michael Bradley and Issey Nakajima-Farran on April 5 at Crew Stadium. Despite the loss, the Black & Gold remain atop Major League Soccer’s early season Eastern Conference table, ahead of TFC on goal differential. Bradley put Toronto in the lead in the 11th minute of play before Nakajima-Farran converted Justin Morrow’s pass for TFC’s second goal of the night.

Columbus Crew record: 18-13-6 Home games: 12-3-3 (29 GF, 19 GA) Road games: 6-10-3 (33 GF, 35 GA) Columbus Crew Stadium Buck Shaw Stadium Columbus Crew Stadium

FIRST AND ONLY TRIP TO CALIFORNIA IN 2014 Sunday’s match at Buck Shaw Stadium is the first and only regular-season meeting between the two teams in opposite conferences ... last season, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw on March 16, 2013 ... this is the 38th regular-season meeting in the all-time season series between the two teams dating back to 1996 ... Columbus leads the alltime series with a 18-13-6 record and the Black & Gold are 6-10-3 on the road against the Earthquakes ... while the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA play at Crew Stadium in 2014, this is the Crew’s only California trip in 2014. lAST MEETING The Crew hosted the 2012 Supporters’ Shield winners, the San Jose Earthquakes, earning a 1-1 draw against the northern California club in front of 16,528 supporters in the Crew Stadium opener on March 16, 2013. Glauber put the Black & Gold on the board first, as the big Brazilian headed home Federico Higuain’s corner kick in the 68th minute. It was the Brazilian’s first MLS regular season strike. San Jose battled back five minutes later, with Justin Morrow converting Ramiro Corrales’ cross.

WHERE TO WATCH Sunday’s 3:00 p.m. ET start is available nationally on UniMas and locally on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel ... a complete list of places to catch the Black & Gold on TV is available at TheCrew.com in the drop-down item “Where to Watch” under the “Schedule” tab ... fans can also listen to the match on the radio on 95.5 The Game or La Mega 103.1 FM. A CHANCE FOR ROAD TRIP HISTORY The Crew heads back on the road looking to improve upon its hot start away from Crew Stadium in 2014 (2-0-0) ... the Black & Gold are looking to accomplish something not done in club history before -- win the first three road matches of the year ... the team has gone unbeaten on the first trio of road trips to open a campaign before -going 2-0-1 in 2003 and 2-0-3 through the first five away contests in 2010 -- but a win in San Jose Sunday would make club history for a perfect three road matches.

WHAT A ROAD WIN COULD ALSO MEAN While the Crew could make early-season history Sunday should it win on the road, a win also gives three consecutive road victories for the first time since 2007 ... during that season, the Black & Gold defeated Toronto FC 2-1 (September 22), New England 3-2 (October 13) and DC United 3-2 (October 20) ... the 2007 Columbus Crew finished 9-11-10 (37 points) and sixth place in the Eastern Conference. A TOUGH ROAD TEST AHEAD The Crew has earned points in eight of the past 10 meetings (3-2-5, 14 points) against the Earthquakes ... securing the full three points in San Jose hasn’t come easy, though ... Columbus has only earned one win at Buck Shaw Stadium since San Jose’s expansion season in 2008 ... the Crew defeated the Earthquakes 3-2 on May 10, 2008, but have gone 0-1-2 at Buck Shaw Stadium since then ... Columbus defeated the Earthquakes on the road 3-0 on August 8, 2009 in a match at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. GOALS ON THE ROAD Entering the weekend, the Crew leads MLS in road goal differential with +4 through a pair of away contests ... the Black & Gold opened the year with a trio of goals at D.C. on March 15 (3-0) before a come-from-behind victory in the team’s most recent road trip to Seattle on March 29 (2-1). THE TIES THAT BIND: MARK WATSON Crew Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter is quite familiar with San Jose from his playing days against the Earthquakes and the LA-SJ rivalry ... on the opposite side of the sidelines, Earthquakes Head Coach Mark Watson has longstanding ties to the Crew ... Watson was selected in the second round (No. 11 overall) in the MLS Inaugural Draft in 1996 ... he made 14 appearances in 1996 before playing for the Revolution and D.C. United in his career. A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST ROAD MATCH Federico Higuain’s eight corner kicks in the Crew’s 2-1 victory over Seattle Sounders FC (March 29) still ranks in the top 10 single-game highs in MLS this season ... the eight corners also stand as the fourth highest corner kick total in a road match in 2014.

LEARNING FROM A LOSS The Black & Gold look to rebound from a 2-0 loss last Saturday against Toronto FC ... Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter addressed the best way a team can learn, telling local reporters, “No, you never need a loss [to learn] ... we always want to win. I honestly believe it’s better to learn from wins. I’m disappointed that we lost. Toronto played a great game and executed their game plan perfectly, but I’m still disappointed that we lost, no question.” RARE TO SEE CREW HELD SCORELESS After posting seven goals in three contests, the 2-0 shutout loss to Toronto last Saturday was the first time the Crew has been held scoreless in 2014 ... the team has yet to have to rebound from a shutout in 2014 in all competitions as, including five matches of preseason, the Crew went more than 720 minutes of play under Gregg Berhalter without being held scoreless ... prior to last Saturday, the last regular-season match in which the Crew failed to score was October 27, 2013 in the regular-season finale against New England.

... AND FOURTH IN GOALS AGAINST AVERAGE In 360 minutes of action, the Crew has allowed just four goals in 2014 as the Crew’s 1.00 goals against average is tied with Toronto and Vancouver for third in MLS this season ... Real Salt Lake and Sporting KC sit just ahead of the Crew with a 0.80 average while LA leads MLS in its three regular-season contests, allowing just two tallies. HIGUAIN CREEPING UP THE CHARTS Federico Higuain is one goal away from moving up the Crew’s all-time top 10 goalscoring list ... in just 46 career regular-season matches, he currently has 19 goals as a member of the Crew and sits in a three-way tie for 10th place alongside Robert Warzycha and Pete Marino (19 goals) ... his next goal moves him move him into a tie for ninth place with Alejandro Moreno (20 goals) ... Higuain will have to score five more goals this season to take over eighth place, which is held by Brain Maisonneuve (23 goals). HIGUAIN IS MONEY FROM THE SPOT Federico Higuain notched his second penalty of the year on the team’s last road trip -- at Seattle on March 29 -- leveling the match at one before Justin Meram’s late gamewinner ... Higuain’s first penalty kick attempt of the season was a goal at D.C. … last year, he set a Crew record for penalty kick goals in a season after posting a 6-for-8 mark from the spot ... with his penalty kick goal in Seattle, Higuain now has nine career goals from the spot, giving him sole possession third all-time on the Crew’s list of penalty kick goal leaders, passing Jeff Cunningham … Guillermo Barro Schelotto leads that list with 13 with Brian McBride second with 11.

BLISTERING PK PACE In 46 regular-season matches, Federico Higuain has nine career penalty kick goals ... averaging a goal from the spot every five regular-season matches, Higuain could secure the club’s all-time lead for penalty kick goals (13 - Schelotto) before the end of the regular season as the Crew looks at 30 remaining contests on the schedule. TOUGH TO TOP NUMBER 10’S PRODUCTIVITY Since Federico Higuain’s debut with the Crew midway through the 2012 season, his offensive productivity has been stellar ... only four other players since August 1, 2012 have scored 10 goals and 10 assists in regular-season action ... of those five, Higuain is the only player with five multiple-goal games ... Pipa leads that group in chances created (which includes assists) and assists and is second on that list in overall goals with 19 ... also of note, Higuain leads the list of overall games played, providing immediate impact for his team each and every time he steps on the field ... a look at the aforementioned list is below: Player Higuain Keane Henry Donovan Zusi

BY THE NUMBERS 3

The last three meetings between Columbus and San Jose have resulted in a point for each club. After a 0-0 draw in 2011, the clubs played to a pair of 1-1 matches in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The last Crew victory against San Jose was August 8, 2009 in a match in San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. The two teams began meeting just once a season following the schedule adjustment ahead of the 2012 season. In both 2000 and 2002, the two teams met four times in the regular-season.

20

Crew Vice Captain Wil Trapp has now played the same number of games in his professional career as the number on the back of his jersey: 20. Since making his debut on July 7, 2013 against Portland, Trapp has started every regular-season game for the Crew. The midfielder, who turned 21 this year, has two career assists, including the game-winning helper on Bernardo Anor’s second goal in the 2-1 win over Philadelphia on March 22.

2,999

Midfielder Tony Tchani enters this weekend on 2,999 regular-season minutes in his Crew career since his first season with the Black & Gold in 2012. Since 2010, he has played 90 regular season games across time with New York and Toronto FC. Of the 90 appearances and 5,753 minutes, 48 appearances have come with the Crew as the midfielder has started in each of the Crew’s first four matches of 2014.
