The San Jose Earthquakes return home looking to put an end to a long winless run when D.C. United pay a visit to Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday evening. The Quakes haven’t won in eight league games, since defeating United on June 11, after a 4-0 loss at Real Salt Lake last weekend. United last played in league competition 10 days ago, falling 10 to the New England Revolution at home. REFEREE: Mark Kadlecik. United have not won at San Jose since a 4-0 victory in 1998.  Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. DC: P18 W9 L4 D5 … Ben Olsen v SJ: P2 W0 L2 D0 LAST MATCH 6/11: DC 2, SJ 4 (Najar 13; Brettschneider 34 – Lenhart 15, 22, 60; Dawkins 49)  United struck first in the 13th minute. Josh Wolff sent in a low, curling ball from the left side that eluded four Earthquakes defenders before Andy Najar slid it home at the back post.  But San Jose pulled level two minutes later. Steven Lenhart beat the offside trap to meet a Khari Stephenson through ball before rounding D.C. goalkeeeper Bill Hamid for a finish into an unguarded goal. The visitors then pulled level in the 22nd minute when Hamid couldn’t hold a Stephenson shot from just outside the box and Lenhart pounced on the rebound to finish.  Yet United leveled terms in the 34th minute. Blake Brettschneider collected a pass at the edge of the area, turned past Quakes defender Bobby Burling and fired low and hard inside goalkeeper Jon Busch's left post.  Shortly after the break, San Jose re-took the lead. Simon Dawkins played a one-two with Steven Lenhart in the area, slotting home the return pass from behind D.C.’s back line.  The Quakes finished off the match in the 60th minute. Steven Beitashour looped a cross back into the box from the left, and as Hamid came well off his line to challenge, Lenhart got there first to loop a header into the empty net for his hat trick.  D.C. MLS GAME INFORMATION

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes saw their winless streak stretched to eight games, going down to a 4-0 defeat to Real Salt Lake on Saturday evening at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Quakes have 24 points from 20 games on the season, sitting in seventh place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH  The match turned in the 62nd minute. Earthquakes defender Bobby Burling was sent off after Alvaro Saborio went down in the area under his challenge. Burling was sent off by referee David Gantar, and Saborio converted the resulting penalty for the opening goal.  Saborío added another in the 75th minute. Midfielder Ned Grabavoy put a curling ball on frame, which San Jose ‘keeper Jon Busch could not control. Saborío was there for the rebound, and easily slotted it into the back of the net.  Just a few minutes later, RSL struck again. As Saborío took a shot near the penalty spot, teammate Collen Warner got in the way of it, but the ball found its way to the feet of Kyle Beckerman, who drilled the ball into the corner of the net.  Defender Jámison Olave added a fourth goal in the 83rd minute, heading home a cross from Arturo Alvarez to round out the scoring.  Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop made six changes to the team that reached a 2-2 result against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Buck Shaw Stadium. Nana Attakora, Tim Ward and Bobby Convey came into the back four for Chris Leitch, Jason Hernandez and Ramiro Corrales, Sam Cronin and Rafael Baca came into the midfield for Brad Ring and Simon Dawkins, and Scott Sealy started up top for Steven Lenhart.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Nana Attakora (Brad Ring 54), Tim Ward, Bobby Burling (sent off 61), Bobby Convey - Jacob Peterson, Khari Stephenson, Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca - Scott Sealy (Chris Leitch 63), Chris Wondolowski. TEAM NEWS  The Earthquakes has a run of three consecutive draws put to an end in the loss to Real Salt Lake, but still last won in their first meeting with D.C. United, a 4-2 win June 11 at RFK Stadium.  "I just asked Bobby Burling, and he didn't touch him. It’s up to the referee to make sure it is a penalty kick and that changed the game. Red card, penalty, goal and we were done after that. Up until then we were doing OK,” said San Jose boss Frank Yallop.  The four goals allowed by the Quakes was a season-high, after allowing three in a loss to New York on April 16. San Jose has allowed six goals in the last two games.  “Jon is a good goalkeeper and he made some great saves. He kept us in the game early with a good save on (Fabian) Espíndola,” said Yallop.  Bobby Burling received a red card for the second time this season, also sent off July 2 vs. New York.  “It changed the whole game. Up until that point we were playing a pretty good road game against a very good team,” said Busch. “Salt Lake is a very good team, especially at home; they play possession, they knock the ball and wear you down. That card changes the game and it’s a shame, because who knows how it ends.”  After five games out of the starting lineup with a left knee contusion, Bobby Convey returned to the Earthquakes team – at left back. He had played left back for six straight matches, May 14-June 17.  “(S)itting out, you just realize you want to play,” said Convey. “There’s no point in being miserable about it. I just want to get back playing.” Said Quakes coach Frank Yallop: “Whatever the coach — who’s in charge of the players — whatever he thinks you’re good at, you’ve got to embrace it. We talked about it. It’s like, ‘Clear your mind. Whatever I say you do, just do it, because I’m putting you in spots I know you can play and play well at.’”  Convey has also appeared on the left side of midfield – the position he says he prefers – but has made only one start there since beginning the first six games of the season on the left wing.  “For me, I was just more disappointed we weren’t doing as well as last year,” Convey said. “I just wanted to get back to how it was last year, and we weren’t winning as many games. I was thinking if we played the same positions we played last year, we’d win more games like last year. Talking to Frank, he pointed out we won a lot of games with me in the back.” D.C. UNITED D.C. United had their undefeated streak come to an end at five games, falling 1-0 to the New England Revolution on Wednesday evening at RFK Stadium. United have 23 points from 19 games on the year, sitting in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  United had a glorious chance to open the scoring just before halftime when Pat Phelan handled inside the box and referee Michael Kennedy pointed to the spot. But Charlie Davies skied his effort over the crossbar.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

The game's lone goal came in the the 73rd minute. Midfielder Stephen McCarthy broke free of Ethan White on a corner kick and sent a glancing header past United goalkeeper Bill Hamid, off the far post and into the back of the net.  United coach Ben Olsen made one change to the team that reached a scoreless draw with FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park. Josh Wolff came back in for Joseph Ngwenya in attack.  D.C. UNITED (4-1-2-1-2): Bill Hamid - Perry Kitchen, Ethan White, Brandon McDonald, Daniel Woolard - Clyde Simms (Joseph Ngwenya 79), Andy Najar, Chris Pontius (Austin da Luz 71) - Dwayne De Rosario - Charlie Davies, Josh Wolff (Fred 63). TEAM NEWS  United were shut out for a second consecutive match, their first back-to-back games without a goal this season.  “We put a good effort in for the first 45 [minutes] and the goal didn’t come, and then physically we tanked. I was disappointed we didn’t get through it a little bit more and find a way to get a result,” United head coach Ben Olsen said. “We created very good chances, and they created pretty good chances too. Again, you get these summer games were you are back and forth, you give up chances, you get chances – but you got to do well with yours.”  United also allowed a goal for the first time in three games, coming into a midweek game three days after the scoreless draw with FC Dallas.  “Dallas took a lot out of us. I was hoping that we could recover physically, but there were some zombies out there at times,” Olsen said. “You go through these summers and you have games when back-to-back is going to be tough.”  Three of Charlie Davies’ eight goals in league play had come from the penalty spot, but he missed for the first time in MLS.  “I’ve missed them, we’ve all missed them. I’m not too worried about that; I thought he played better today. I thought he was pretty good running off the ball,” Olsen said. “It was just that final stuff that failed him tonight, but he got into some good spots and he was dangerous.”  On Saturday, United fell 3-1 to Everton FC in a friendly at RFK Stadium. Victor Anichebe (4) and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (16) gave Everton an early lead. Chris Pontius pulled a goal back for United two minutes after the break, but Magaye Gueye put the match away (82)  Here’s United’s team: Bill Hamid (Steve Cronin 46), Chris Korb (Perry Kitchen 46), Brandon McDonald (Clyde Simms 78), Dejan Jakovic (Ethan White 46), Marc Burch (Daniel Woolard 70), Andy Najar (Dwayne De Rosario 46), Stephen King, Kurt Morsink (Conor Shanosky 46), Austin Da Luz, Joseph Ngwenya, Josh Wolff (Chris Pontius 36).

D.C. UNITED GAME NOTES D.C. UNITED VS SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES JULY 30, 2011 | BUCK SHAW STADIUM | 10:30 P.M. ET

UNITED HEADS WEST

After a break from MLS action over the weekend to play English Premier League side Everton and three matches in seven days, D.C. United (5-6-8, 23 points) travels to the West Coast for one game to take on the San Jose Earthquakes (5-7-9, 24 points). The Black-and-Red have fared well on the West Coast this season, defeating the Portland Timbers on May 29, 3-2, and drawing with the LA Galaxy on June 3, 0-0. United and the Earthquakes met earlier this season on June 11 at RFK Stadium as Steven Lenhart tallied a hat trick to lead San Jose to a 4-2 victory. D.C. SEEKS ELUSIVE WIN AT SAN JOSE

Despite D.C. United’s storied history, the Washington-based club has struggled mightily at San Jose since MLS’ inception in 1996, compiling a meager 2-7-6 road record. In fact, the Black-and-Red have not secured a victory in San Jose in over 13 years – the last being a 4-0 victory at Spartan Stadium on June 3, 1998 that included a goal and an assist from United Head Coach and then 21year-old, Ben Olsen. D.C. is winless in its last six matches overall against San Jose. THE LAST TIME

The ‘Quakes defeated United earlier this season at RFK Stadium on June 11, 4-2, due in large part to the play of Steven Lenhart. The forward broke out by factoring in all four San Jose goals, tallying a hat trick and an assist en route to the victory. D.C.’s Andy Najar opened the scoring in the 13th minute to put United ahead early, but Lenhart answered back with two strikes of his own in the 15th and 22nd minutes. United seemed poised to fight back as Blake Brettschneider found the back of the net in the 34th minute, but D.C’s young backline displayed its inexperience as the second half commenced. Simon Dawkins scored the eventual gamewinner in the 49th minute and Lenhart added an insurance goal in the 60th minute as San Jose preserved the 4-2 victory despite a desperate last minute push by the home side.

SIMMS CLIMBS ALL-TIME LIST

On July 20 against the New England Revolution, midfielder Clyde Simms pulled into a tie for fifth place on the D.C. United AllTime regular season matches played list (169) with former midfielder and recent Hall of Tradition inductee Richie Williams. Assuming Simms plays against San Jose on Saturday, the seven-year veteran will take sole possession of fifth place on the list with 170 games played. Simms has made a career based on his perpetual consistency as a reliable defensive midfielder for the Blackand-Red, starting 134 games and amassing 12,147 minutes over the course of his career. The 28-year-old has started in every game he has played in this season (16) and has partnered well with new acquisition Dwanye De Rosario in central midfield. D.C. ALL-TIME GAMES PLAYED LEADERS

DE ROSARIO NAMED TO ALL-STAR SQUAD

D.C. United attacking midfielder Dwayne De Rosario was recently added to the 2011 MLS All-Star team as an inactive reserve. De Rosario joined the Black-and-Red on June 27 after being acquired from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for midfielder Dax McCarty. Since joining United, De Rosario has tallied a goal and an assist in four games played. In total, the Canadian has scored four goals in addition to six assists over the course of his 2011 campaign with Toronto, New York, and D.C. The All-Star nod marks De Rosario’s sixth time being honored, having made the All-Star squad every year since 2006.

ROAD WARRIORS

D.C. United continues to have success in away bouts this season as it is currently at the top of the Eastern Conference in road points per game, having gone 3-3-3 (12 points). The Black-and-Red are the only Eastern Conference team without a losing record on the road this season and are averaging 1.33 points per game with Philadelphia just behind at a 1.2 clip. United has not lost on the road in over two and a half months, with its last lost away from RFK Stadium coming on April 29 to the Houston Dynamo, 4-1. MCDONALD RETURNS TO SAN JOSE

Saturday’s match will mark the return of center back Brandon McDonald to Buck Shaw Stadium. The imposing defender was dealt to D.C. United on June 27 in return for allocation money and has been a stalwart on the Blackand-Red backline ever since, starting all four games since his arrival. McDonald appeared in 58 games (54 starts) in two and a half seasons while with San Jose. The 25-year-old has gelled nicely in his new role with United, providing much-needed leadership and experience to a young United backline that had been shaky and inconsistent for much of the season. In fact, D.C. has only given up three goals in the four League games that McDonald has been a part of thus far. BLACK-AND-RED FALL TO EVERTON

D.C. United welcomed Everton last Saturday, July 23 to RFK Stadium for an international friendly in the first ever meeting between the sides. Two of the most historic sides from either side of the Atlantic, Everton defeated United 3-1 on a sweltering day in Washington, D.C. Everton displayed its Premiership quality early on as it scored only four minutes into the match. Everton forward Victor Anichebe received a looping ball from Leighton Baines behind the D.C. backline and beat goalkeeper Bill Hamid to take the early lead. The Toffees then doubled their advantage in the 16th minute as Diniyar Bilyaletdinov slashed behind the United defense and beat Hamid one-on-one. Midfielder Chris Pontius cut the score in half just after halftime, receiving a through ball from Dwayne De Rosario. Magaye Gueye closed the door, however, after getting on the end of a Jermaine Beckford cross in the 82nd minute to give Everton a 3-1 lead.

GOALS GALORE FOR UNITED IN 2011

Following a tumultuous 2010 season in which D.C. United scored an MLS-record low 21 goals with a mere nine assists, the Blackand-Red were desperate for firepower heading into 2011. By adding forwards Charlie Davies and veteran Josh Wolff, in addition to the midseason acquisition of playmaker Dwayne De Rosario, United’s goal scoring woes are a thing of the past. Despite managing just one goal in its last three outings, D.C. United is currently third in the Eastern Conference in goals per game (1.32), behind New York (1.62), a stark improvement after finishing dead last in the League last season. HAMID HEATING UP

United goalkeeper Bill Hamid has been in top form in recent games, as he secured his second consecutive shutout in two weeks in the scoreless draw against FC Dallas on July 16. With one of the youngest backlines in the MLS, United’s netminder has had his struggles in his second MLS campaign. The 20-year-old has posted a 1.44 GAA in 16 games played, and he seems to have found a strong rhythm in recent weeks. Hamid became the first goalkeeper to shutout the New York Red Bulls – MLS’ top-scoring side – on its home pitch on July 9 in a 1-0 win. Hamid ran his shutout streak over the course of two and a half games before it was snapped in the 73rd minute against New England on July 20. DE ROSARIO MAKING AN IMPACT

Dwayne De Rosario has only played four League games with the Black-and-Red, but the MLS veteran has quickly proven himself in Black-and-Red. The Canadian playmaker tallied a goal and an assist against rivals Philadelphia and New York in his first two matches. The midfielder recorded an assist in a 2-2 draw with the Philadelphia Union on July 2 in his United debut at RFK Stadium, and then he provided the game-winning goal against his old club in a 1-0 victory over New York on July 9. De Rosario has provided a noticeable spark and veteran leadership to a D.C. squad that was in need of a potent attacking midfielder. In total, De Rosario has registered four goals and six assists on the season in 1,653 minutes played (with Toronto FC, New York, and D.C. United). The 13-year veteran was recently named an MLS All-Star for the sixth consecutive season.

DAVIES QUESTIONABLE

Forward Charlie Davies is listed as questionable for Saturday’s match after sustaining a left knee sprain. Davies did not appear in the friendly against Everton and is in the middle of a four-game scoring drought. Despite the recent scoring woes, Davies remains tied for third position in the race for the 2011 MLS Budweiser Golden Boot with eight goals. In his first season in MLS, the 25-year-old Davies has led the League in goals at different points throughout the 2011 campaign, but has struggled to find his rhythm since scoring in a 2-2 draw against the Houston Dynamo on June 25 at RFK Stadium. The young striker has played in 17 games (11 starts), totaling 1,026 minutes. VETERAN SUFFERS HAMSTRING INJURY

D.C. United forward Josh Wolff suffered a slight setback on July 16 when he was scratched from the starting lineup just before game time against FC Dallas due to a left hamstring strain, but the veteran returned to action against New England on July 20 and played 54 minutes. Wolff has been a stalwart up top for the Black-and-Red in 2011. The 34-year-old has provided five assists in addition to four goals in 17 games played this season. Wolff is questionable for Saturday’s contest. UNITED INJURY OUTLOOK

Center back Dejan Jakovic (left hamstring strain) and left back Marc Burch (right hamstring strain) returned to the pitch on July 23 in the friendly against Everton. The appearance marked Burch’s first action since April 29 against Houston and Jakovic’s first appearance since May 29 against Portland. United’s backline has been a bit inconsistent while both defenders have been absent, but with the addition of Brandon McDonald at the end of June and the emergence of other rookies, there should be plenty of options for Head Coach Ben Olsen. Four D.C. players are currently sidelined with symptoms resulting from knocks to the head. Santino Quaranta last played on May 14 against the Colorado Rapids, while rookie forward Blake Brettschneider was sidelined after a knock against New York on July 9. Devon McTavish and Brandon Barklage are also out with concussion-like symptoms. Brettschneider and Barklage are making progress and are likely to return to the pitch soon.

CANADIAN HOMESTAND ON HORIZON

Following Saturday’s match in San Jose, D.C. United is set to host Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps in consecutive weeks at RFK Stadium. Both sides are currently at the bottom of their respective conferences and could provide an excellent opportunity for the Black-and-Red to make a move in the Eastern Conference standings. Earlier this season, United handily defeated Toronto on April 16 at BMO Field, 3-0. August 13 will mark the inaugural meeting between United and the expansion Whitecaps. SHANOSKY LOANED

19-year-old midfielder Conor Shanosky saw a bit of action with the Harrisburg City Islanders after being loaned to the club for a July 20 match against FC New York. Shanosky and the Islanders defeated New York 5-1 in the contest. The youngster has not seen action in any League games this season with the Black-and-Red, but has appeared in both friendlies versus AFC Ajax on May 22 and Everton on July 23. Shanosky became the third homegrown player to be signed to United’s roster on August 16, 2010. BLACK-AND-RED ACQURE DA LUZ

D.C. United announced on July 17 that it acquired midfielder Austin da Luz from the New York Red Bulls as part of the deal which saw D.C. send an international spot to New York on July 16. Da Luz has played in seven regular season games in 2011 for New York, making four starts and notching a goal and an assist. The second-year player made his debut with United on July 20 against New England coming on in the 71st minute for Chris Pontius on the wing. PONTIUS IN TOP FORM

One of United’s most consistent players in 2011, Chris Pontius tallied his career-high fifth goal of the season on June 25 against Houston. The 24-year-old has been a force for United on the wing opposite 2010 Rookie of the Year Andy Najar, starting all 19 games and tallying 1,605 minutes of action. The third-year player last scored on a sizzling strike against Houston that was recognized by a Week 15 Goal of the Week nomination.

BRETTSCHNEIDER PROVING VALUE

When rookie Blake Brettschneider was selected by D.C. United with the 21st pick in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft on January 18, most wondered if the forward would even make the roster. Brettschneider then showed sparks of brilliance, scoring three goals in two Reserve League games for United as well as tallying a goal against AFC Ajax on May 22. Thus far in 2011 the rookie has proven to be a steal for United. Brettschneider tallied two assists at JELD-WEN Field against Portland on May 29, and he scored his first career MLS goal versus San Jose on June 11. He suffered a concussion on July 9 in New York and has not featured for United since that time. WILLIAMS HONORED BY UNITED

D.C. United announced on July 12 that it plans to induct former midfielder Richie Williams into the D.C. United Hall of Tradition presented by Yuengling when the Black-andRed host the Portland Timbers on August 27 at 7:30 p.m. A never-say-die player and original member of D.C. United, midfielder Williams is best remembered for his appetite for the ball and his dogged tackling. He represented the club during six of the eight seasons he played in Major League Soccer (1996-2000 and 2002). While with the Blackand-Red, Williams was a part of three MLS Cup titles (1996, 1997 and 1999), a U.S. Open Cup championship (1996), two Supporters Shields (1997 and 1999) and the 1998 Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup victories. FRED RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA

The July 20 match against New England marked Fred’s final contest in a D.C. United uniform, as he has been released to sign with the Melbourne Heart of the Hyundai ALeague. The Brazilian spent three seasons with United from 2007 to 2009 and returned to the Black-and-Red in 2011 after one season with the Philadelphia Union. Over the course of four seasons, Fred has played 88 games (65 starts) for D.C. United, tallying 11 goals and 17 assists. Mainly coming off the bench, the midfielder has played 16 games for the Black-and-Red in 2011, totaling 569 minutes and one assist on the field. Fred already has some experience in Australia, having played for Melbourne Victory FC of the Hyundai A-League in 2006.

YOUTH COMMANDS UNITED BACKLINE

D.C. United continues its chase to the top of the Eastern Conference table despite its youth, specifically on defense. For a stretch during the middle of the season, the Blackand-Red were playing with a backline consisting of Chris Korb (23), Ethan White (20), Perry Kitchen (19), and Daniel Woolard (27), along with 20-year-old goalkeeper Bill Hamid. The United backline has gotten a bit more experience, however, with the addition of 25-year-old center back Brandon McDonald. D.C.’s defensive front will also be bolstered by the return of defenders Dejan Jakovic and Marc Burch from injuries. UNITED ACQUIRES DE ROSARIO

The Black-and-Red made a statement on June 27 as United acquired MLS superstar Dwayne De Rosario from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for midfielder Dax McCarty. De Rosario then made his debut with United on July 2 against the Philadelphia Union and tallied an assist after only two days of training with the club. The Canadian international has over a decade of MLS accomplishments, winning four MLS Cups in addition to twice earning MLS Cup MVP honors in 2001 and 2007. The 33-year-old attacking midfielder is a five-time MLS AllStar and has been named to the MLS Best XI five times. De Rosario has made a name for himself with his lethal potency at the attacking midfield position, scoring 80 career goals in addition to 56 assists in MLS. He has also been a stalwart on the Canadian National Team, appearing in 60 games with 17 international goals. ACADEMY FALLS AT NATIONAL PLAYOFFS

After advancing to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Playoffs in Frisco, Texas by virtue of winning a pair of Mid-Atlantic Division crowns, the U-16 and U18 squads saw their seasons come to a halt following a combined 1-5 performance in group play. The playoff results proved to be an unfortunate end to what was a fantastic season for the pair of Academy sides, as D.C. United made tremendous strides in improving its youth system.

UNITED ADDS MCDONALD TO ROSTER

On the same say as the De Rosario deal, D.C. United also acquired defender Brandon McDonald from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for allocation money. McDonald made his debut on July 2, starting at center back against the Philadelphia Union. The 25year-old defender will bolster a United backline that is statistically the youngest unit in the League and has proven to be shaky at times due to inexperience. In two full seasons with San Jose, McDonald appeared in 58 games (55 starts) while adding three goals and three assists. The hard-nosed defender has MLS Cup Playoff experience and was invited to attend U.S. National Team training camp in January of 2010. MAN OF THE MATCH AUCTION

After each D.C. United MLS regular season game, be sure to visit dcunited.com to vote on the Lenkersdorfer Fine Jewelers Man of the Match. UNITED WAIVES BRASESCO, CARRIERO

D.C. United decided to cut ties with Uruguayan defender Rodrigo Brasesco on June 14 and Brazilian midfielder Junior Carreiro on June 29. Brasesco made three appearances (two starts) in his only season in Washington. The 25-year-old originally signed with the Black-and-Red on January 10, 2011 on loan from Racing Club of the Uruguayan Primera Division. Carreiro made three League appearances for United after signing on September 15, 2010. An ankle injury sustained in January sidelined him in 2011. UNITED GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES 40K

United for D.C., the charitable arm of D.C. United, announced that the Tenth Annual United Celebrity Golf Tournament, presented by GEICO, raised more than $40,000 on June 20. Proceeds from the event will benefit the charity’s three signature programs - United Reads, Kicks for Kids and United Soccer Club - all of which use soccer to place an emphasis on literacy, healthy lifestyles and life skills for underserved youth in the greater Metropolitan Area. The event drew more than 140 golfers to 1757 Golf Club in Virginia for a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start. Guests enjoyed 18 holes of golf, numerous hole contests, featuring Volkswagen’s offer of a car for a hole in one, a silent auction, and an awards reception. D.C. United players and coaches participated in the event in addition to MLS Commissioner Don Garber, USMNT player DeMarcus Beasley, and D.C. United legend Jaime Moreno. ONSTAD RETURNS TO BENCH

After coming out of retirement to relieve D.C. United’s early season goalkeeping woes, Pat Onstad has officially returned to the coaching ranks as his short-term playing contract expired on May 31. The 43-year-old bolstered United’s goalkeeping ranks to start the season as current starter Bill Hamid recovered from offseason shoulder surgery and Steve Cronin was also injured. Onstad appeared in three games for the Black-andRed, registering 270 minutes. The Canadian international had a remarkable 25-year career and is widely considered one of the top goalkeepers in MLS history.

JAIME MORENO HEADS-UP U-23 SQUAD

D.C. United announced that the club will launch a D.C. United Under-23 team featuring top collegiate players. Coached by D.C. United legend Jaime Moreno, players will play and learn from one of the most accomplished individuals in MLS history. Moreno will be assisted by Academy coaches Judah Cooks and Nolan Sheldon, along with former United U-20 Head Coach Dafydd Evans. With a pool of 28 players, the U-23 squad will compete against MLS Reserve sides and select USL Premier Development League organizations throughout the summer season. OLSEN’S ARMY

Following the most trying season in club history, sweeping change was needed after a 6-24-4 2010 MLS campaign to get the Blackand-Red back on track. While there were several notable changes among the playing ranks, United chose stability and familiarity in regards to its Head Coach. 12-year D.C. United veteran and former club captain Ben Olsen stepped into the breach as Interim Head Coach on August 7, 2010, following Curt Onalfo’s dismissal midseason. At 33years-old he is currently the youngest coach in Major League Soccer, having retired as a player on November 24, 2009. 2010 SEASON RECAP

Steadying the ship in United’s most tumultuous season, Ben Olsen took over as Interim Head Coach from Curt Onalfo on August 7 away to New England. The Blackand-Red showed marked improvement under Olsen, winning on August 22 2-0 over Philadelphia and beating eventual MLS Cup Champion Colorado 1-0 on the road on October 2. United also got to the semifinal round of the 2010 U.S. Open Cup, falling in extra time to Columbus. The lasting image of the 2010 campaign was of 15-year MLS veteran Jaime Moreno taking his lap of honor around RFK Stadium on October 23 in his final match for D.C. United. Moreno retired as MLS’ all-time leading scorer with 133 tallies.
