CHICAGO FIRE vs SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES TOYOTA PARK, Bridgeview, Ill. 7:30 p.m. CT (CSN-Chi; CSN-BA)

May 28, 2011 (WEEK 11; MLS Game 103)

Four days after meeting in northern California, the Chicago Fire and San Jose Earthquakes play the back end of their unique home-and-home series when the clubs face off at Toyota Park. On Tuesday, the teams played a U.S. Open Cup match, the Fire advancing to the tournament proper on penalty kicks. The Fire haven’t won in eight league games; the Quakes are coming off back-to-back league wins at home. REFEREE: Abbey Okulaja. Before the 2-1 win in Bridgeview last year, the Quakes had never defeated Chicago in regulation time on the road.  Coaches record: Carlos de los Cobos vs. PHI: P2 W1 L1 D0 … Frank Yallop v CHI: P16 W3 L7 D6 U.S. OPEN CUP  The teams met Tuesday in a play-in game in the U.S. Open Cup at Buck Shaw Stadium, the Fire advancing on penalty kicks after the teams played to a 2-2 draw. Ellis McLoughlin and Justin Morrow put the Earthquakes two goals by halftime, but goals from Orr Barouch and Yamith Cuesta completed the comeback for the visitors.  The Fire played the final 22 minutes of extra time a man down after Gonzalo Segares was sent off. In the penalty shootout, Daniel Paladini converted the Fire’s fifth kick in the sixth round, then when Scott Sealy hit the crossbar, the Fire had earned a place in the tournament proper round-of-16.  SAN JOSE: Andrew Weber; Steven Beitashour, Bobby Burling, Brandon McDonald, Ramiro Corrales; Anthony Ampaipitakwong (Steven Lenhart 83), Sam Cronin, Brad Ring (Khari Stephenson 71), Justin Morrow; Ellis McLoughlin (Scott Sealy 46), Chris Wondolowski.  CHICAGO: Sean Johnson; Jalil Anibaba (Dominic Oduro 46), Yamith Cuesta, Dasan Robinson (Cory Gibbs 88), Gonzalo Segares; Bratislav Ristic, Daniel Paladini, Logan Pause, Marco Pappa; Cristian Nazarit, Gaston Puerari (Orr Barouch 46). CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire saw their winless streak stretched to eight games in a 2-1 loss to Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at PPL Park. The Fire have 8 points from 10 matches on the year, sitting in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Union took the lead in the 64th minute when Michael Farfan took a pass from Kyle Nakazawa on a free kick from the left flank, and struck a low, driving shot from outside the box that deflected past the Fire’s Jon Conway.  Just four minutes later, however, Fire winger Dominic Oduro rounded Farfan on the right side of the area and poked a shot past Union ’keeper Faryd Mondragón from a tight angle.  Yet Union regained the lead in the 75th minute. After Carlos Ruiz saw his free kick blocked, he chased down the deflection and looped a high-arching shot from about 40 yards out that sailed over Conway’s head, hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced straight down over the goal line.  Fire head coach Carlos de los Cobos made two changes to the team that came back for a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC at BMO Field. Bratislav Ristic came in at left back for Jalil Anibaba and Baggio Husidic started in place of Gaston Puerari.  CHICAGO FIRE (4-1-4-1): Jon Conway - Bratislav Ristic, Yamith Cuesta, Cory Gibbs, Gonzalo Segares Daniel Paladini - Dominic Oduro, Baggio Husidic (Gaston Puerari 60), Corben Bone (Logan Pause 60), Marco Pappa - Diego Chaves (Orr Barouch 46). TEAM NEWS  The Fire’s current winless streak in league play is one game shy of the club record set June 12-July 28, 2004. The Fire haven’t won in league play since March 26.  “There’s nothing we can do but keep our heads up,” Oduro said. “We still have a lot of games to go so you just got to keep your head up and try to fight for the little points ahead of you. Right now, we’re among the bottom on the table but at the same time we have a lot of games to go. We just have to reach out for the points and keep trying to make the playoffs.”  While officially a draw, the Fire believe the victory on penalty kicks in the Open Cup match against San Jose could go far in starting a positive run.  “It’s a good result and we hope to go far in this Cup. This win means a lot for our confidence. We’d tied five games and lost the last one,” said Marco Pappa. “I’m very pleased because the team is doing well again, the players are happy because we won and we hope to beat them again at home on Saturday.”  While the Fire have allowed two goals in each of their last three games in all competitions, they were able to score twice for the second time in those three games in the Open Cup match.  “We were trying to play direct in the first half, trying to keep possession, and they were really pressuring us,” Daniel Paladini said. “We weren’t clearing the ball well, so in the second half we decided to play the ball forward, skip a few lines and use Oduro’s speed. Pappa switched the ball well also, and we played with heart, which we didn’t do in the first half.”  Fire captain Logan Pause was able to return to action for the first time since April 30 in the Philadelphia match, coming off the bench for a 30-minute stint after injuring a hamstring. He played the full 120 minutes in the Open Cup tie.  The San Jose rematch could also present an interesting goalkeeper matchup. Current Fire goalkeeper Jon Conway played on two MLS Cup champions (2001, 2003) when he was with the Earthquakes, while Quakes ‘keeper Jon Busch led the Fire to the Eastern Conference Championship match in 2008 and 2009 before being released a week before the 2010 season opener.  Neither goalkeeper played in the Open Cup match, with deputies Sean Johnson (Chicago) and Andrew Weber (San Jose) donning the gloves.  "To be honest with you, I think we're better off playing anxiously," Conway said. "There are times when we've taken goals and been slapped in the face, and then we come back out with vigor and we're moving the ball crisper to get back into the game." SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes won for a second consecutive match at home, defeating the New England Revolution 2-1 on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes have 12 points from 10 games on the season, sitting in a tie for seventh place in the Western Conference to start the week. LAST MATCH  In the 71st minute – just four minutes after coming on for Ryan Johnson – a completely unmarked Ellis McLoughlin met a Chris Wondolowski cross with a stooping header that beat Matt Reis inside the far post to give San Jose the lead.  The Quakes doubled their lead in the 83rd minute when Bobby Convey curled in a free kick over an outstretched Reis and just inside the upper left corner of the goal.  Just three minutes later, the Revs pulled a goal back when Chris Tierney lashed a low free kick past the wall and beyond the reach of San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch.  Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop made one change to the team that rolled to a 3-0 win against the Columbus Crew at Buck Shaw Stadium. Ike Opara came into central defense for the suspended Brandon McDonald.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Chris Leitch, Ike Opara, Jason Hernandez, Bobby Convey Joey Gjertsen (Anthony Ampaipitakwong 64), Brad Ring, Khari Stephenson, Ryan Johnson (Ellis McLoughlin 67) - Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart. TEAM NEWS  The Earthquakes have won back-to-back league games at Buck Shaw Stadium and haven’t lost since a 1-0 defeat by Philadelphia on April. Including Open Cup play, the Quakes are 3-0-2 in their last five games (the loss on penalties is officially considered a draw).  “These games you have to win, and I said at the start of the season we’ve got to be good at home,” Yallop said. “We started slowly at home, but it’s nice to get back-to-back wins and score some goals here at Buck Shaw. I think that the signs that we are getting a lot better come with every game.  While the Quakes have won a pair of games since returning to Yallop’s tried-and-true 4-4-2 scheme, the New England match changed with the substitution of Anthony Ampaipitakwong and Ellis McLoughlin on the wings. The Quakes have scored five second-half goals in the past two games, after netting just one in the final 45 minutes over the first eight.  “They possessed the ball better than us, especially in the first half. They outplayed us football-wise,” said Yallop. “I think we needed the thrust of someone like Ellis to make a difference and he did. I think him and [Ampaipitakwong] changed the game for us.”  Another change was the role of Wondolowski, playing off striker Steven Lenhart for a fourth consecutive game as the strike pair.  “We dropped him back a bit because we they had three central midfielders. He made a great movement to help set up the goal before serving in a terrific ball to Ellis,” Yallop said. “He is on a great run right now getting goals or assists in almost every game.”  Said Wondolowski: “He’s a great player, and I think we are getting more and more on the same page. It’s incredible playing with him, especially the way he battles and fights for every ball. I just get to pick up the scraps and pick and choose where I want to go, which helps me a lot.  But the Quakes will have a hole to fill for a few weeks after Wondolowski was called into the U.S. team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Winger Ryan Johnson was also called in, by Jamaica.  “We look at his goal-scoring and think he’s just that, but he’s a good soccer player; very clean feet, good passer of the ball, very good in the air,” Yallop said of Wondolowski. “It’s great he’s on our team, that’s for sure.”

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (1-4-5, 8 pts.) enter their 14th season of MLS play after posting a 9-12-9 record in 2010. Disappointed with missing out on the playoffs for just the second time in club history, the Fire have made many changes to the roster for 2011, bringing in the likes of veteran U.S. defender Cory Gibbs, Croatians Josip Mikulic (defender) and Marko Maric (midfielder) as well as the Uruguayan strike tandem of Diego Chaves and Gaston Puerari. In all, the club is returning 13 players to the roster, meaning half the players opening the season are new to the club in 2011. 2010 MLS All-Star selection and Goal of the Year winner midfielder th Marco Pappa returns for his 4 MLS season and looks to build upon his team leading seven goals in 2010. Joining Pappa in the midfielder are 2010 Fire MVP and newly named captain Logan Pause and last season’s assist leader Patrick Nyarko, while 2011 MLS Combine MVP Jalil Anibaba will patrol the backline with offseason acquisitions Gibbs and Mikulic. TODAY’S TELECAST Today’s game is being broadcast regionally on Comcast SportsNet Chicago with Dan Kelly (play-by-play) and John Sharader (analyst) on the call. Evan Whitfield will work the sideline for the match.

CHICAGO – SAN JOSE SERIES th Tonight’s meeting between the Fire and Earthquakes is the 29 regular season encounter between the two sides. FIRE ADVANCE TO US OPEN CUP WITH SHOOTOUT WIN AT SAN JOSE Second-half goals from Orr Barouch and Yamith Cuesta spurred the Chicago Fire as the Men in Red overcame a two-goal deficit to draw the match in regulation and eventually edge the San Jose Earthquakes 5-4 on penalty kicks in a U.S. Open Cup qualifying match at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Tuesday night. Daniel Paladini’s penalty kick proved the difference and with the victory the Fire advance to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open th Cup for the 14 time in club history. th

San Jose got the scoring started in the 14 minute when Ellis McLoughlin picked up a loose ball in front of the 18-yard box. The Quakes forward strode in on goal before blasting a shot that was deflected by Cuesta’s boot and past Sean Johnson and into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead. With the first half coming to a close the Quakes tallied a goal against the run of play. McLoughlin collected possession at the right side of the penalty area. The 20-year old Seattle product hit a low, well-struck ball that forced Johnson to dive to his right. As the Fire ‘keeper attempted to collect the shot the ball popped out and Justin Morrow opportunely tumbled the ball over the line for a two goal cushion heading into halftime. The Fire made two changes to start the second interval, as Carlos de los Cobos brought on Orr Barouch and Dominic Oduro to jump-start the Fire st offense. The change paid dividends in the 61 minute when Paladini combined with Segares to find Barouch at the top of the box. The 19-year-old striker turned and sent a rolling effort past Quakes ‘keeper Andrew Weber and inside the far post to pull one back for the Fire. th

In the 76 minute, the Fire pulled level when Cuesta nodded a corner kick down towards the feet of Weber. The San Jose ‘keeper was unable to corral the ball and it rolled over the line to knot the game at 2-2. Neither club was able to break the deadlock and regulation came to a close with the two sides headed towards overtime. Eight minutes into the first extra session Khari Stephenson hauled down Paladini in the middle of the park to earn a yellow card. In the aftermath of the booking, Gonzalo Segares was shown straight red, reducing the Fire to 10 men for the remainder of the overtime. Despite opportunities for both sides in the extra sessions, neither team was able to breakthrough, and the game was decided on penalties. The Fire prevailed 5-4 after six rounds with Paladini’s kick elevating the Fire after 120 minutes. FIRE DROP 2-1 RESULT AT PHILADELPHIA th Dominic Oduro slammed home the equalizing goal in the 64 minute, but the Fire’s comeback attempt fell short, losing 2-1 to Philadelphia Union at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Saturday night. The loss snaps the Men in Red’s four game unbeaten streak. With the defeat, the Fire drop to 1-4-5, 8 points through the first 10 matches in the 2011 MLS campaign. The first interval saw both teams hold possession and push for first blood in lengthy stretches. Carlos de los Cobos’ side had the better of the first 25 minutes before the Union applied pressure to close out the first 45 minutes and finish the half in a scoreless tie. rd

Philadelphia broke through in the 63 minute when Michael Farfan tallied his first MLS goal. On a set piece outside of the Fire area, Union midfielder Kyle Nakazawa fed Farfan at the top of the box. The UNC product struck a low, driven effort that deflected off of a Fire defender to beat Conway and give the Union a one goal advantage. After the initial shock of the opening goal, the Fire once again exhibited their ability to strike back. Four minutes after Farfan’s goal, Gonzalo Segares sent a lofted cross across the Union penalty area to an open Oduro. The Ghanaian striker collected the ball, beat Farfan with a crafty move before whizzing the ball past Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon to level the game at 1-1. st

With momentum swinging towards the visitors, the Men in Red searched for the go-ahead goal. That goal nearly came to fruition in the 71 minute when second-half sub Gaston Puerari was played in behind the Union defense by Orr Barouch. The sly Uruguayan was alone with Mondragon and fired a shot destined for goal only to have Union defender Sheanon Williams clear the ball off the line. The Union took the lead for a good on a golazo from Carlos Ruiz. The Guatemalan collected a Fire clearance before playing the ball to himself. The th veteran playmaker, in full volley, placed the ball off of the bottom of the crossbar and over the goal line. The goal was Ruiz’ 85 MLS tally and proved the difference in the Fire’s fourth loss in league play. SAME OPPONENT, CLOSE PROXIMITY TO OPEN CUP This week marks the sixth time the Fire will play the same opponent in less than a week’s time across MLS and U.S. Open Cup play. The club is 9-1-1 all-time when this scenario has occurred, with the last occurrence coming in 2006. LOGAN PAUSE CHASING FIRE HISTORY th Nine-year Chicago Fire veteran Logan Pause tied Jesse Marsch for fourth on the club’s all-time regular season appearance list with his 200 match coming on March 26 vs. Sporting KC. The Fire captain then took sole possession of the fourth spot with his appearance in the club’s 2-1 loss to Seattle on April 9. Having averaged a minimum of 21 matches in each of his nine years with the club, if Pause’s form holds true for this season, he will move into second all-time in Fire regular season appearances. Next up in the captain’s sites is the player he modeled himself after, Chris Armas, who appeared in 214 regular season matches for the club from 1998-07. Having passed Peter Nowak for 10 all-time in MLS regular season starts earlier this year (Segares currently has th 121), the left back passed Chris Rolfe last Saturday for 10 on the club’s all-time regular season appearance list with 124. th

Having played 188 minutes over the last two matches, Segares passed Peter Nowak for 10 in Minutes Played for the Fire across all competitions with 12,590. PAPPA CALLED UP BY GUATEMALA The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced earlier this week that midfielder Marco Pappa has been selected to the Guatemalan Men’s National Team ahead of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The 23-year-old playmaker will represent his country when Guatemala begin Group B play against Honduras at The Home Depot Center on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 p.m. CT. Pappa will report to national team camp following the Fire’s May 28 match against the San Jose Earthquakes at TOYOTA PARK. The talented winger, who has tallied four goals during the 2011 MLS campaign, will likely miss at least three Fire matches while on national team duty with Los Champines. 2010 YEAR IN REVIEW The Fire ushered in a new era with the hiring of former El Salvador national team boss Carlos de los Cobos ahead of the 2010 campaign. The new manager brought in a new system to the club, while welcoming in Designated Players in Mexican striker Nery Castillo and Swedish winger Freddie Ljungberg. Despite the acquisitions, de los Cobos’ side came up just short of the 2010 MLS playoffs, missing the postseason for just the second time in club history. At season’s end, two legendary players announced their retirement, with the Fire bidding goodbye to U.S. giant Brian McBride and the last remaining “Fire Original”, defender C.J. Brown who spent all 13 seasons of his MLS career in the Windy City, appearing in 371 matches for the club across all competitions. FIRE PRESEASON NOTES In preparation for the 2011 MLS season, the Chicago Fire broke up the club’s preseason into three phases, the initial of which saw the side spend two weeks at the Bridgeview Soccer & Sports Dome – the first instance in 14 seasons the club has spent an extended amount of time training in Chicagoland. The team then spent 12 days in Ave Maria, FL, training and paying a visit to the club’s Juniors organization based in Naples while fitting in three friendlies. After a brief return to Chicago, the team set off for Phase 3 of preseason, making the club’s debut appearance in the Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, SC. The Fire joined fellow MLS sides DC United and Toronto FC as well as tournament hosts, USL-Pro’s Charleston Battery in the four-team round robin tournament.

The San Jose Earthquakes burst out to a 2-0 halftime lead, but the Chicago Fire came back to even the score in the second half, before winning on penalties in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play-in match. Chicago won the shootout 5-4 after a scoreless 30 minutes of overtime. U.S. head coach Bob Bradley released the full roster for the tournament Monday morning. Wondolowski will join the U.S. for training camp on Sunday, May 29. The United States plays Spain in a friendly match prior to the start of the Gold Cup on Saturday, June 4 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Following that friendly, the U.S. will begin play in Group C on Tuesday, June 7 with a match against Canada at Ford Field in Detroit. The Americans then face Panama on June 11 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., before concluding group play on June 14 against Guadeloupe at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. The quarterfinals begin on June 18 with the semifinal matches scheduled for June 22. The Gold Cup final will be played Saturday, June 25 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Wondolowski has been called up once before to represent his country. He spent the month of January earlier this year in Southern California at a training camp at The Home Depot Center. He started and played 60 minutes for the U.S. against Chile at The Home Depot Center on Jan. 22 to earn his first cap. Johnson Named to Jamaican National Team for CONCACAF Gold Cup The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that Ryan Johnson has been named to the roster for the Jamaican National Team for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament to be held in the United States. Johnson has joined the Jamaican team for a training camp in Brazil that will run from May 23-June 2. Jamaica has been drawn into Group B along with Grenada, Guatemala, and Honduras. Jamaica will open up their 2011 Gold Cup campaign against Grenada on Monday, June 6 at the Home Depot Center. Johnson has currently amassed 12 appearances for the Jamaican national team, scoring three goals, with his debut for the team coming in a friendly against the United States in 2006. All three of Johnson’s international goals came in 2010 against Argentina, Costa Rica, and Guadeloupe. He also helped Jamaica win the 2010 Digicel Cup in December. McLoughlin Scores First Career MLS Goal Ellis McLoughlin made an almost immediate impact after entering Saturday’s match against the New England Revolution in the 67th minute for Ryan Johnson at left mid. The Seattle native made a well-timed run to the far post and polished off a perfectly placed cross by teammate Chris Wondolowski to give San Jose a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute in just his third appearance with the Earthquakes. McLoughlin signed with San Jose on March 17, 2011 after spending two seasons playing for the Hertha BSC reserves. Convey Tallies for First Time in 2011 on Spectacular Free Kick Bobby Convey put himself on the score sheet in spectacular fashion against the New England Revolution on Saturday after bending a free kick into the far corner in the 81st minute. The goal stood up as the game winner, his first in three seasons with the Earthquakes. It was also Convey’s first goal of 2011 and third career regular-season strike in San Jose. Last season, the former Reading FC standout was named MLS Comeback Player of the Year after recording a team-high 10 assists. Earthquakes Extend Unbeaten Streak to Three Games San Jose’s 2-1 win against visiting New England on Saturday extended the club’s unbeaten streak to three, the longest stretch since avoiding a loss in four straight from Sept. 5 to Sept. 25 in 2010. The Earthquakes drew 1-1 with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on May 11, defeated the Columbus Crew 3-0 on May 14 and knocked off the Revolution on Saturday. San Jose’s Defense Getting Stingy After allowing eight goals in four games during an 0-2-2 stretch from April 2 to April 23, the Earthquakes have locked down in the back with just three goals conceded in their last four matches. Dating back to April 30, San Jose has allowed no more than one goal during a game. The club is 2-1-1 over its last four matches, including a 1-0 120th-minute win against the Portland Timbers in a U.S. Open Cup qualifier. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 90-6-20 in their last 116 matches when scoring first. They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, went undefeated last year with a 12-0-2 record and are 3-1-1 this season. In 2005, San Jose went undefeated at 14-0-5 when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 25-2-2 in 2001 and 2002 when finding the back of the net first. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. The team continued that trend in 2003, possessing an 11-0-1 mark in the regular season when they scored the first goal. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the top mark in MLS. The Quakes gave up their lead and lost to Los Angeles on July 4, 2004 for the first time since July 27, 2002 against Kansas City. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting a 7-0-0 record.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Chicago Fire, May 28, 2011 5:30 p.m. PT Wondolowski Moves into Fourth Place All Time on the Quakes’ Scoring Charts San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski continues to inch up the franchise’s all-time scoring charts. Wondo scored two goals two weeks ago, one against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday, May 11 and another against the Columbus Crew on Saturday, May 14, giving him a total of 26 with the Quakes. Those goals moved Wondolowski past Brian Ching for No. 4 on the club’s all-time scoring chart. Up next for the Danville, Calif. native is Dwayne De Rosario, who scored 27 for the team from 2001-2005. The career leader for the Quakes is Ronald Cerritos, who notched 61 from 1997-2001 and in 2005. Flashback: Opara Scores First Career Goal vs. Chicago Fire on April 10, 2010 Ike Opara scored his first career goal, a game winner in the 81st minute, against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on April 10, 2010. Opara made a timely run into the area and met a Bobby Convey cross in stride, heading home a powerful shot to give San Jose a 2-1 lead. The Earthquakes were in search of a rebound performance after dropping their season opener 3-0 to Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium and found inspiration from their rookie center back. The win helped the Quakes gain momentum for a 5-2-1 start to the 2010 season. Busch Among MLS Career Leaders List for Shutouts Jon Busch is No. 8 on the MLS career shutouts list with 55 after his clean sheet this past weekend against Columbus. The Earthquakes’ starting goalkeeper has recorded nine clean sheets in San Jose. He notched 21 shutouts during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire and had 25 in five seasons with the Columbus Crew (2002-06). Scoring First under Yallop During Frank Yallop's first tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes were one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-1 from 2001-03 when scoring the first goal of the game. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 21 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. Yallop's team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010 and so far in 2011 is 3-1-1 when netting the first goal. Halftime Success The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a half-time lead after beating FC Dallas on March 26 and tying against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on May 11. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Earthquakes are 66-1-14 in games when leading at the half, including impressive marks of 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 8-0-1 in 2003, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 7-0-3 in 2005. Despite holding a halftime lead on May 10, 2008 vs. Columbus, the Quakes fell 3-2. That game marked the team's first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime lead.
