Ranks Among the Best of the Best in the Nation!

Winter Wonderland Light Display

Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation was reaccredited in fall of 2015 by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). Accreditation is valid for a period of five years.

Winter Wonderland at Falls Park is a dazzling display of lights for all ages. Falls Park will light up nightly through Sunday, January 10. Enjoy the final weekend of the light display by attending the Frosty Frolics kickoff event at Falls Park with fireworks over the falls at 6:45 p.m. on Friday, January 8.

Community Gardens Applications and guidelines for the 2016 community garden season will be available at the Park Office or online starting no later than January 2, 2016. A list of garden locations will be available online or at the Park Office at that time. Garden placement is on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to people who successfully gardened in the Sioux Falls Community Garden program the previous year. The Sioux Falls Community Garden is a cooperative effort involving the City of Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County Master Gardeners, Minnehaha County Extension Service, and a dedicated group of volunteers, including more than 200 individual gardeners.

The self-assessment requires agencies to provide documented evidence for each of the 151 standards representing best practices of effective and efficient park and recreation operations. To earn national accreditation, agencies must fully meet all 37 fundamental standards and at least 85 percent of the remaining 114 nonfundamental standards. Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation met all fundamental standards and 96 percent of the remaining standards. Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has been accredited through CAPRA since 2010. CAPRA accreditation is a distinguished mark of excellence for park and recreation agencies and is a measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community. The National Recreation and Park Association research team estimates that there are approximately 14,000 parks and recreation agencies nationwide, of which 1 percent, or 144, have earned national accreditation.
