TUTHILL HOUSE AGES: 2-3 Engaging in canvas painting activities promotes artistic development, enhances cognitive abilities such as memory and problem-solving skills, and improves motor skills. NATURE-INSPIRED VALENTINES

TUTHILL HOUSE AGES: 2–3 February is a month of love! Instead of handing out store-bought valentines this year, create your own with items found in nature! HOLIDAY ARTS AND CRAFTS NIGHT

MEMORIAL WARMING HOUSE AGES: 6–9 Engage in a delightful cold-weather activity that offers the convenience of staying indoors while enjoying crafting meaningful projects to share during the upcoming holiday season. In this class, children will assemble two ornaments and complete a winter-themed art project. The children can either cherish these projects as personal keepsakes or wrap them and offer them as gifts this holiday season. Registration required.

PRAIRIE GREEN GOLF COURSE AGES: 7+ "Dance Party Through the Eras!" Join us for a delightful evening of music, Taylor Swift activities with friends. We will have a friendship bracelet trading station and a designated area for creating your very own bracelets. Capture some memorable moments at our various photo drop setups. Delicious snacks and refreshments will be provided. Get ready to groove to the beat with lively music and participate in exciting contests such as limbo and hula hooping. Registration required.

TUTHILL CANDY CANE ADVENTURE

TUTHILL PARK AGE: 6–9 Candy canes have been discovered across Tuthill Park, and we need your help! We will set out on a candy cane hunt as the sun goes down! Don’t forget a flashlight— bring your own or borrow one of ours while supplies last. Rumor has it there are some specially marked candy canes. Turn them in to us for a holiday prize! Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate as we also have a candy cane craft, table games, and snow yard games by the warming house! No registration required.

YOUTH NEW YEAR’S EVE BASH

DOWNTOWN PLAZA AGES: 6-9 Let's aim to create an unforgettable New Year celebration by incorporating enjoyable elements. Delightful treats such as Puppy Chow and a hot cocoa bar will be available to enjoy while you put together some crafts to take home and use at your party. Put together a fun pair of sparkle glasses and a headband and wear them as you ring in the New Year. Registration required.

MCKENNAN PARK ICE RINK AGES: 6–9 McKennan Park is a magical place in the wintertime! Skate like a royal while listening to your favorite prince and princess music! All activities will be outside, so please dress for the weather—costumes are encouraged! All children will receive a FREE crown while supplies last. Ice skate rentals will be available. MCKENNAN WARMING HOUSE AGES: 6–9 Winter is a perfect time for wild birds in your backyard. We will celebrate and help them by creating two nutritional bird feeders from natural materials. As we wait for our creations to dry, we will learn all about different South Dakota winter birds and what they like to eat through a fun bird beak game! Registration required.

AGES: 6–9 Snow castles, igloos, snowmen, OH MY! Put your homework on pause, come show off your snowshaping abilities, and transform your neighborhood park into a winter wonderland! SNOWCCER (SNOW SOCCER) SERIES

MEMORIAL ICE RINK AGE: 10–12 Soccer is traditionally a sport that is played outdoors on a grassy field. What happens when the field is covered in snow? Absolutely nothing! Join us for our snowccer series outdoors! We will play pick-up games and have contests like the longest shot and most goals! Please dress for cold weather, as we will have games, snow or shine! We will end each night with a snow goal, where teams will build a goal out of snow! Registration required.

ARROWHEAD PARK AGES: 10–17 Snowshoeing is a lifelong activity that is enjoyed around the world for its accessibility and simplicity. Explore Arrowhead Park as the moon glistens on the snow while partaking in a guided snowshoe walk surrounded by glow sticks! Participants will learn snowshoeing fundamentals before going on a stroll. All equipment will be provided. Registration required.

ARROWHEAD PARK AGES: 10–12 Ever wonder what animals are around Sioux Falls in winter? During this guided activity, you will learn about amazing winter wildlife and how to protect them through animal tracking, an adaptation game, a search for animal homes, and an animal track rubbing plate craft. Registration required.

PASLEY PARK AGES: 18+ Winter may seem like a quiet season for most animals, but birds are here year-round in South Dakota. Join us on a walk to spot the brilliantly colored birds that stick around for the winter season! Registration required.

CITY CENTER COOPER ROOM AGES: 18+ Join us for an exciting evening of white elephant Bingo at the City of Sioux Falls City Center! Feel free to bring a white elephant gift, should you wish to participate, and cross your fingers that you don’t take it home again! Each successful Bingo will earn you a unique white elephant prize. Registration required.

JAN 10 | WED | 6–8 P.M. SNOWMAN CRAFTING

AGES: 18+ Eagle breeding season begins in February! Join us as we keep our eyes on the tree line for these beautiful birds. The courtship ritual presents the couples soaring to dizzying heights, locking talons, and free-falling together as a sign of companionship. Binoculars and a spotting scope will be present. We will also provide coffee and hot cocoa to keep us warm. Even if the eagles elude us, we will enjoy a stroll around the park searching for other winter birds. Tours start promptly at the stated time. No registration required.

TUTHILL HOUSE AGES: 18+ Create your winter wonderland with this cute glass snowman. We will be painting a festive face on a glass cube. TUTHILL HOUSE AGES: 55+ Did you know that the sport of snowshoeing can burn up to 1,000 calories an hour? Participants will learn snowshoeing fundamentals before partaking in a group snowshoe hike around the park. Warm up with hot cocoa post-hike. All equipment will be provided. Registration required.

MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER AGES: 65+ The SAIL program is a 10-week fitness program for adults 65 and above. Participants can enhance their strength, balance, and physical fitness. They can also reduce their risk of falls, improving their quality of life. Adding to the benefits, SAIL offers an opportunity to socialize and form new connections. Our team of skilled instructors will ensure that each class is well-taught and tailored to the needs and abilities of older adults. Chairs will be provided. For optimal results, we recommend attending two classes per week. Remember to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. Registration required.

FALLS PARK SHELTER ALL AGES Join us in welcoming winter and help us partake in some wildlife fun! We will make pinecone feeder garlands for our backyard feathered friends while learning fascinating facts about birds you might encounter this season. After making the garland, you can decorate your own “tree cookie” to take home! Dress warmly because this event will take place outside under the picnic shelter. Warm tea will be provided, but bringing your own mug is encouraged. Afterward, stick around and stroll through Falls Park or partake in some holiday shopping downtown. Allergy warning—we will be using peanut butter.

ALL AGES Step right up and experience the thrill of the winter carnival! Get ready to be transported to a magical wonderland filled with classic carnival games, but with a frosty twist. This event will be outside, so dress yourself and your doggo appropriately. Heating lamps will be available to warm up. Registration required.

LEADERS PARK ALL AGES Join us for a winter hike to celebrate the Winter Solstice. As we hike the wooded trails you will learn about how the Winter Solstice impacted the Sioux Nation. Must be able to walk one to two miles on unlevel surfaces. Registration required.

SPENCER PARK ALL AGES Come be a part of the enjoyable and competitive frosty morning run. Participants will have the opportunity to appreciate the scenic path alongside the Big Sioux River while engaging in either a 5K or 10K course. To assist and guide runners, clearly marked turn around points will be designated along the route. Runners who register prior to December 22 will be rewarded with a Frosty Fun Run/Walk T-shirt. Please note that runner check-in and day-of registration will commence at 8 A.M.

MARY JO WEGNER ARBORETUM ALL AGES Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum to offer an outdoor adventure stroll, allowing you to spend time on their gorgeous trails. We will search for birds, explore animal tracks, and experience all the Arboretum holds during winter. We will provide binoculars, and snowshoes will be available if needed. Registration required.

SPENCER DOG PARK ALL AGES Calling all K9s! Join us for our 3rd Annual Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation K9 Root Beer Keg Races! Each participating dog will be categorized into weight classes and wear a harness attached to an appropriately sized root beer keg to pull past a designated finish line! We will time each dog, and the fastest dog in each class wins! The races will take place at Spencer Dog Park. Sign-ups will be at 3 p.m. sharp, and the races will begin promptly at 3:30 p.m.! No registration required.

CARDBOARD SLED “I-KID-A-ROD”

MORNINGSIDE PARK ALL AGES On your mark-get set- go! Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is bringing the excitement of Alaska’s Iditarod; with a twist! Bring your pre-prepared sled, constructed of only cardboard and duct tape for the sled foundation. Don’t forget the string so you can pull the sled. All sleds will be judged based on creativity, so make your sled stand out! Make sure your sled is sturdy, as parents will pull each racer along the path to stations throughout the course, such as an iceberg jump and seal sneak. Join us at the picnic shelter for hot chocolate and a snack upon completion of the race. No registration required.

The Great Backyard Bird Count helps with a crucial science project around birds and their importance. We will explore the trails of Legacy Park and see how many birds we can spot during this event! FAMILY PARK ALL AGES This furry extravaganza is a must-see for all dog lovers. Watch pups strut their stuff through the dog park dressed in their finest Mardi Gras gear. From cozy sweaters to festive hats, these pups will steal your heart. Create a float using a wagon, yard cart, baby stroller, etc. Motorized floats are not permitted. Owners are encouraged to dress up as well. Join us for a day filled with wagging tails and endless cuteness. The parade participants will be judged in two categories: creativity and originality. COLLEGE BROOMBALL DROP-IN LEAGUE CAMPUS PARK AGES: 18+ Join us for our Tuesday night drop-in league! Broomball is like hockey, but players hit a rubber ball with brooms instead of pucks with sticks, and it’s played in your shoes instead of ice skates. Teams will consist of six players on the ice—come with a team or form your own for the night! All supplies will be provided each night. No registration required.

What started as a few strands of lights and a lighted reindeer at Falls Park has grown to over 23 miles of twinkling light strands and other holiday decorations. MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER AGES: 55+ The basic program begins with exercises to improve range of motion, muscle strength, balance, and endurance. As participants’ joint flexibility and pain improve, more functional activities are added. The class is held once a week in the warm water pool. This swim and story time will begin with a lesson in life-jacket safety. You are encouraged to bring your child’s life jacket as we will discuss how to ensure it is properly fit. As a group, we will then read a couple of favorite swimming stories! MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER AGES: 55+ Based on the principles of arthritis aquatics and senior wellness programming, we will continue to improve range of motion, balance, and muscle strength. Participants will also build endurance through workout routines, intervals, and circuit training, using water resistance and equipment. Registration required. It is recommended that participants have experience with (or previous participation in) senior fitness programs, and wear water shoes.

AGES: 7–13 | $10 PER PARTICIPANT MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER Experience aquatic sports in a safe, fun, and noncompetitive environment. Join us for our aquatic camp where campers will learn more about water volleyball, diving, boga yoga, and swim team! We will learn new things and play water and deck games in the Midco® meeting rooms. You must be able to swim 25 yards (one length) in deep water without stopping. Campers may be released after camp and stay to swim in the aquatic facility. Please pack a water and towel! Registration required.

WATER WALKING BOOK CLUB

MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER AGES: 18+ Our book club on water is returning this winter. INDOOR SWIMMING LESSONS Midco® Aquatic Center is a gold-level provider of American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim courses. Swimming lessons will be available for all ages and abilities. Not only does learning to swim allow for you to be safe in and around the water, it also has many other added benefits. Learning to swim provides a lifelong skill that can provide fitness opportunities, improve your health, provide strength and coordination, and provide confidence in the water and motivation to continue to improve skill proficiencies. Night lessons only. Lessons are offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings, Tuesday and Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings for five weeks.

AGES: 15+ Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation wants YOU to work as a certified lifeguard during our year-round swimming season. We’re excited about building a great team of professional lifeguards. This course is a blended learning course format (19.5 hours in person, 7.5 hours online). The prerequisites for this course include being 15 years of age and having passed the pre-course swimming skills test.

JUNIOR LIFEGUARDING

AGES: 10–14 Junior lifeguards are aquatics leaders in training! This class is built to create a foundation of knowledge for participants that love the water. It will be an introduction to first aid, CPR, and AED skills, swimming stroke assistance, and hands-on training from a certified lifeguard instructor.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE

AGES: 16+ Water Safety Instructor (WSI) training prepares you to teach children and adults water safety, survival, and swimming skills. Water Safety Instructors are in high demand, and teaching people to swim is a fun and rewarding part-time job for people of all ages. Upon completing the WSI course, participants will be certified to teach American Red Cross swimming lessons. This blended learning course includes an online portion (which must be met before the first day of class) and an instructor-led classroom instruction skills session.
