Mission Statement

The mission of Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is to provide a quality system of parks and recreation facilities and positive leisure opportunities that are available to all persons in the community.

Vision Statement

The vision of Sioux Falls and Parks and Recreation is to provide a comprehensive mix of high-quality parks and recreation programs, facilities, and services that contribute to a quality of life that is unparalleled in the region.

Program/class cancellations must be made up to 48 hours in advance of class by calling the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation (SFPR) Office at 605-367-8222. Please have your original receipt number ready. If paid by credit card, refund will be credited back to the card. Payments made by cash or check will be refunded by a check sent to the account address on file or by crediting the online account for future purchases. Purchases made with a gift card are nonrefundable; however, a credit will be applied to SFPR online account. If less than a 48-hour notice, no refund or credit will be issued.

All programs operate with a minimum/maximum capacity. SFPR reserves the right to cancel, change, or combine programs when minimum class enrollment has not been met. If SFPR cancels a program/class, refunds/credits will be made as stated above.

Once a class is filled, a waiting list will be created. Please call SFPR at 605-367-8222 to be placed on the waiting list.

Classes and Programs City of Sioux Falls parks are tobacco-free zones. Tobacco use is not allowed during youth activities.

The Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Community Centers are a joint venture between the Sioux Falls School District and Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation. The community centers are open to the public and are accessible to individuals with disabilities.

Facilities may include one to three meeting rooms, a kitchen, a game room, an activity room, a computer lab, and a gym with either three volleyball courts or two basketball courts.

All five community centers are Wi-Fi hot spots!

Game rooms have board games, video games, pool table, air hockey, and foosball available for use. Free.

Monday Night Open Gym at Oyate Oyate C.C. will be the site of evening open gym basketball throughout the school year and is open to all ages. Court rentals will not be available during this time. No organized team practice is allowed.

Weekend Open Gym and Game Room at the Community Centers Dates: October 3 through December 27 Days/Time: Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.

Locations: All five community centers

Open gyms are a time for people to drop in to play volleyball and basketball. No organized team play is allowed. These gyms are open to all ages. FREE. Weekday Open Gym/Game Room This program is designed for participants ages 7 and up. Different activities are scheduled daily, such as arts and crafts, open gym, and special events. Must be able to selfmanage to attend. More details on this program are available at each center.

No program offered on early dismissal days or federal holidays.

Dates/Time: Monday through Friday, September 28 through December 18, 2:45 to 6 p.m. Gym will close at 5:45 p.m.

Age Policy for Open Gym/Game Room A five-children-to-one-adult ratio will be enforced for children 6 years and younger.

Children 6 years and younger must be accompanied by someone 16 years old or older.

Weekend Open (“Enlarged”) Gyms at Other Grade Schools Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with the Sioux Falls and Brandon Valley School Districts, offers more opportunities for basketball and volleyball open gym use at additional neighborhood elementary schools across the city. It is recommended that anyone interested in playing volleyball on the weekends should use the gym space at Laura Wilder Elementary.

Computer Lab Computer labs provide a quiet, convenient place to have Internet access. Hours are subject to change to accommodate scheduled programs.

Play Groups are specifically for kids and their caregivers. Gather your friends at our “house” to play and not get your house messy. Our play groups are open for kids from infant age to prekindergarten age. We will provide the equipment and toys. Parents/adults provide the supervision. Not intended for child care centers or in-home care providers.

Walking Program Walking is one of the best ways to stay healthy! Pedometers are available for checkout so you can log your daily progress.

We will help track your miles each week and award incentives when you reach the 100 and 200 mile markers! Walking has many benefits for your health, and we want to

reward you for healthy behavior. We will also offer a monthly newsletter to keep you updated on upcoming events and other fitness programs during the months of the walking program.

Community Center Meeting Room Reservations Looking for a location to hold a birthday party, baby shower, or family reunion?

Look no further! Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has the perfect location just for your event.

Each community center has at least one large meeting room.

Meeting areas are equipped with tables, chairs, TV, DVD, and dry erase boards. Kitchen specifics are available upon request.

Boys’ 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

Morningside C.C. T-shirt scarves are downright easy to make. Anyone who can operate a pair of scissors can make one if they’ve got a spare two minutes.

Join us in making a variety of different scarves using old T-shirts so you can bundle up in style this winter. Please bring several T-shirts for making your different scarves. It is also VERY important you come with a pair of SHARP fabric shears. We will have a few pairs of shears here for you to use, but if you have some at home, please bring them along.

Put you and your friends’ basketball skills to the test in this 3-on-3 boys’ basketball tournament. There will be two divisions available, one for fifth and sixth graders and one for seventh and eighth graders. Each team will receive T-shirts with registration.

Parks and Recreation has two sites available for dog off-leash areas: • Lien Park—Located on the east side of North Cliff Avenue at the Big Sioux River, approximately one-quarter mile north of the Rice Street and Cliff Avenue intersection. Off-street parking is available.

• Spencer Park—Located at 3501 South Cliff Avenue by I-229. This is a permanently fenced dog park with off-street parking available.

Rules for usage are posted. Each site has a picnic table, trash receptacle, and plastic bag dispenser for owners to use to pick up after their pets. For more information, call 367‑8222. Free.

Reservations for Open Air Shelter at Falls Park

Looking for a large-group picnic area? Groups may book the shelter by calling the Park Office at 605-367-8222. There are 12 7-foot picnic tables under the shelter. These will remain in the shelter at all times. Two of these tables are ADA accessible. There is a playground structure and a restroom near the shelter. A nonrefundable reservation fee of $25 will be charged at the time of reservation.

For reservations requiring more than 12 tables, the nonrefundable reservation fee will be $100, with a maximum of 40 tables.

Reservations must be made at least five working days in advance and will follow the 120-day reservation policy.

Visitor Information Center and Observation Tower

The Visitor Information Center, located at Falls Park, is your source for local attraction and event information, maps, brochures, and more!

A five-story, 50-foot viewing tower offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the park and city. The Visitor Information Center is managed by the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Prairie Hills West Park plan sketch

New Neighborhood Parks Southern Vistas Park We are pleased to announce the addition of two new neighborhood parks. The first new park is Southern Vistas Park. Southern Vistas is located at the intersection of West 53rd Street and South Klein Avenue, adjacent to Pettigrew Elementary School. The park is approximately seven acres in size, and construction will be completed in August 2015.

The construction project includes development of many new park features, including a large network of walking trails, a new picnic shelter with security lighting, drinking fountain, stamped and colored concrete, a baseball backstop, interpretive signage and elements, benches, landscaping, and large open green spaces. Southern Vistas’ new trail system will connect users to the existing play structures which are utilized by both the school and the park.

Prairie Hills West Park Prairie Hills West Park is the second new neighborhood park being constructed this year. The park is approximately 2.8 acres in total size and located between South Hemmingstone Trail and South Meredith Avenue within the Prairie Hills neighborhood. This area was identified as a gap in the City’s one-half-mile service radius for neighborhood parks, and this new park will now service this area. The Prairie Hills West project consists of the construction of a new park shelter with security lighting, concrete walkways, playground equipment and surfacing, chain link backstop, site furnishings, drinking fountain, landscaping, tree plantings, and open green space. Construction work for this project will be completed in October of 2015.

Falls Park West rendering included as a part of this project are walking trails, drinking fountains, fencing, shade structures, benches and other site furnishing, and informational signage.

Falls Park West

Downtown Sioux Falls is growing in residents and in its popularity as an entertainment zone every year. Falls Park is the largest green space within the city’s downtown area and is a year-round destination point for visitors and residents.

Burnside Park Renovation

Burnside Park, located at the intersection of North West Avenue and West Burnside Street, is a small three-field softball complex that was identified in 2014 as park facility in need of improvements. This year’s project will address the needed improvements to bring Burnside Park back up to the City’s standards.

The construction project includes renovations of the existing ball fields with new fencing and dugout structures, a new picnic shelter with security lighting, and replacement of deteriorating sidewalk. All construction work has been scheduled so not to interrupt league play on the fields, and will be fully complete in October of 2015.

Family Park Adding Dog Park

Family Park, located near the intersection of West 12th Street and North Tea/Ellis Road, has been selected as the development site for a new off-leash dog park. The project is currently under design and will be constructed in 2016. The City is in the process of completing extensive research on the design and maintenance practices of dog parks and will work with a steering committee to aid in the process. The southwest portion of the park is known as “Falls Park West.” Falls Park West is located along Phillips Avenue, north of Sixth Street and west of the Big Sioux River. This area is currently utilized for its walking trails, art viewing, and access to the Falls of the Big Sioux River. It is also home to multiple festivals and special events throughout the year. The proposed Falls Park West project will transform this large open space into a formalized performance venue to hold professional concerts and large festivals.

The project is in line with the recently completed 2025 Downtown Plan, where citizen user groups identified a desire for creating a space to hold performances in the downtown area. Some potential features that could be constructed as a part of this project include a covered outdoor performance stage with support facilities, a public restroom, walking paths, grading and landscaping, tree plantings, irrigation, and parking. The project is scheduled to begin design work in 2016.

Falls Park is home to many events in Sioux Falls. Change the “color” of the falls with evening lighting to match your event. Colors offered are blue, red, green, pink, purple, yellow, and orange.

Hours: Summer—9:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Application for Special Events Are you planning a special event in Sioux Falls? Plans for events and activities that will be held outdoors on public property, a City street, downtown, or in a City park and are open to the public must go through the event facilitation and approval process.

Bike Trails The city of Sioux Falls has over 27 miles of bike trail. The trail system not only takes you on a scenic tour of the City parks system, but it provides a safe and efficient travel option for those wishing to travel the city on their bikes. The trail system is maintained all year-round and can be used in the winter months. The bike trail system offers residents a perfect opportunity for wellness and fitness opportunities by walking, biking, or blading on paved trails.
