Silver Magazine Letter from Editor As you move into your golden years and take on the role of loving grandparent to your adoring grandchildren, you'll want to be aware of what to expect. Though your children are now fully functioning adults, you might still have a tendency to think of them as kids. If you notice your son and daughter-in-law making odd parenting choices, for example, you should still respect their authority. In most cases, they'll be consulting with their pediatrician on the best possible path for the grandkids. If they're not, don't worry. If you respect their choices, even when not agreeing, they'll eventually listen to you. Accept Physical Aging. As you move into the grandparent phase of life, you should expect to see signs of physical aging. Wrinkles and blemishes on the skin, for example, are a natural part of life. Wrinkles merely indicate that you've lived long enough to obtain true wisdom, which can then be bestowed on others. By accepting your wrinkles instead of fighting to cover them up, you'll experience a much happier existence. Adhere to a Healthy Diet. Becoming a grandparent does not mean, however, that you should neglect your health. By consuming nutrient-rich foods on a daily basis, you can continue to engage in physical activities that you've enjoyed your whole life. You'll also have a better chance of warding off diabetes, heart disease and other maladies. Spoil Your Grandchildren Wisely. While there is nothing wrong with buying your grandchildren

gifts when you see them, you should try to make modest purchases whenever possible. A few choice toys, for example, will usually go over well. Expensive purchases can ruin kids and leave them unimpressed with smaller presents. Stay Involved with Friends. While familial commitments might require a lot of energy, you should still make time for friends who have stood beside you since you were young. Meeting for coffee at the corner shop, for example, will allow you to stay in touch with people you care about. By accepting the aging process and doing your best to take care of yourself, you should become a magnificent grandparent. As you continue to move through life, you can enjoy your grandchildren with gusto. I love my grandparents. They are an important part of all my memories as a child. I wouldn’t want it any other way and I am sure you wouldn’t either.

6 Questions to Ask Your Spouse Right Now 1. How do you want to spend time when we’re retired? People devote a lot of time and energy into financial planning, but very little into psychological planning for retirement. Discussing the specifics of your downtime is crucial because it alleviates depression and shortens or prevents the disenchantment stage of retirement. We know from research that at least one-third of retirees are depressed in the first two years of retirement, and there is an increase in marital conflicts and lower marital satisfaction of both spouses. Much of this strife results from a lack of alignment between spouses about retirement itself, and your relationship. Retirement changes many elements in the relationship. Spouses have to discuss what they want to see happening, what they want to do the two of them together, as well as individually. Time together and apart, division of housework, money, and other issues mentioned in the book must be negotiated. Starting the conversation early is ideal, but having it at all is vital. 2. What do we do if the kids ask for money? A 2013 Grandparents.com survey showed that nearly 60 percent of grandparents have lent their kids money in the past year. And in 2014, a Fidelity Investments study found that more than half of grandparents are loaning or are planning to loan their grandchildren money for college. It’s tough, because we have a maternal/paternal instinct that doesn’t die, even when the kids become adults themselves. But there’s also the reality. When kids ask for money, I think it’s imperative for the parents, the couple, to think long and hard if this is going to be a loan or a gift. If it is a loan, and you need that money back for your own retirement needs, you have to put it in writing, with terms, interest rates, maturity, payment schedule. Don’t make it open-ended. If your instinct is to make it open-ended, assume it’s a gift. Spouses need to discuss the matter alone before going back to kids and grandkids. The expectation on both sides needs to be addressed, but first of all, the two grandparents need to talk about it themselves and talk about their concerns what they expect and what they will tolerate, and what they will not tolerate.

3. Where are our valuables and important documents? This particular question is frequently ignored because it raises the specters of illness and death, which many find difficult to contemplate, never mind discuss with a spouse. However, for practical reasons and in case of emergency, it’s vital that both partners know exactly what key documents say (living wills, etc.), and where important items are located (jewelry, heirlooms, etc.). What’s more, once the subject is broached, it’s imperative to write it all down. You want to get everything in writing, and make sure that periodically, you’re going back to review it. Once a year, both spouses sit down, have a glass of wine, and update everything. What should be included in your talk? In addition to the valuable documents and property, make sure you also include on that list the professionals in your life: CPAs, doctors, etc. Also crucial is electronic access. It’s become more complicated lately because of the digital assets. Make sure you’re keeping a list of the accounts, the passwords. 4. Is there anything new you want to try? According to a Winston-Salem State University study, people who try a variety of new activities and experiences are more likely to "retain positive emotions" and reduce negative ones. It has positive effects for couples in retirement, as well. As long as we're thinking or trying new activities it slows the aging process, whether you try activities that are left brain (sudoku, etc.) or right brain (ceramic, drawing, etc.). New undertakings to be spiritually fulfilling, it's very important to engage as one ages, to find things we are interested in, that give us purpose something we're excited about, that gets us up in the morning, that we look forward to. 5. Do you want to live close to family? We all know couples who live down the block from their loved ones, just as we know couples who live thousands of miles away. If you're considering relocating or downsizing, which option is the right one for you and your spouse, and what should you consider when discussing the matter? Financial support, social opportunities, and in many cases, caretaking whether it’s children helping parents or grandparents babysitting grandchildren are all big advantages to living close to family. But you have to

recognize that each generation has their own financial and personal issues to deal with. Before you make any move, talk about how "it’s working on a financial level as well as an emotional level," and be sure you bring it up with your family, who may or may not welcome the neighborhood company. 6. Should we update our will? And who should we talk to about it? If you haven’t yet created a will, you should probably get on it immediately. And if you do have one, but your family situation has changed, you should move to change it, especially if your situation is a bit different from the norm a second marriage, a disabled child, etc. In a second marriage, it’s especially needed because you often do not have children in common. You should figure out, how your children would not be disinherited should you predecease your second spouse, and they’ve left everything to their own children. As far as who to contact about your will visit a Certified Financial Planner first, and an attorney second. Talking to a planner, you can get a lot of education. They do a lot of the upfront work, and then the attorney makes sure it’s a good, solid legal document.

Looking for a great source of fiber that can lower your blood sugar spikes, curb your diet and prevent heart disease all in one? It’s hard to believe all those benefits can be contained in one food, but this is not the first time the avocado has been described as too good to be true. These green machines fight the battle against heart disease by lowering your cholesterol levels. They’re so full of fiber that they help curb your diet so you feel full and eat less after digesting one. In addition to curbing your diet, it has several vitamins in it like vitamin K, B6 and vitamin C. Not only are there many health benefits to the avocado, but there are also many different ways to eat it!

filled ketchup, try adding a tasty avocado to the mix. If your kids don’t like fruit on their food, try topping the burger with an avocado slice. Now, if your child is a picky eater, place the avocado right under a layer of cheese so she won’t see it before she takes a bit. We bet she’ll love it! Soup: There are so many different kinds of soups in the grocery markets, but have you ever heard of avocado in the soup form? You can make it in a pot with other ingredients you want to add, like onions, tomatoes or spices. Just think of how satisfied you will be when you make this for a quick dinner. Maybe your slow cooker will come in handy if you’re week is booked to capacity; that way, when you get home from a long day of work, your avocado soup will be ready to serve.

Smoothies: Yes, you can eat avocados in smoothies! They are found in many green smoothies. For you moms on the go, make your smoothie, pour it in a water bottle and go conquer your day. Add some tomatoes and sour cream to them to make it your own. With a spoon: Who says you can’t eat them right out of the middle with a spoon? Since the shape of the avocado is round, it almost gives you that support you need to stick a spoon in it. Just make sure to eat the avocado when it’s soft and not ripe! It’s so simple it almost seems too easy! The best part about eating it this way is that because you are scooping the entire avocado out, you get to taste every bit of it. With chocolate: This combination doesn’t sound like it would be good, but it is. There are actually a ton of chocolate and avocado recipes that look pretty good! Just imagine them being mixed together, that could be one amazing sight to see. Ice cream: You probably didn’t think this was possible, but it is! There is a science to making avocado ice cream it isn’t just scooping the avocados out and putting them on an ice cream cone. Salad Dressing: It’s amazing how you can transform a ripe avocado into creamy form. Put avocado salad dressing on any salad if you want to add some color and taste to it. Don’t forget to put some sort of seasoning on it like black pepper to bring out the taste!

How to enjoy summer get-togethers without sacrificing your health It's official; we are officially in "prime time summer" our calendars fill up with social events, parties, picnics, barbecues and more. It also brings many opportunities to indulge in those "moment on the lips, forever on the hips" type treats. Tip #1: Nothing is a "forbidden" food Moderation is key here! Rather than depriving ourselves, having some quality vs. quantity is the mindset that will keep you from all the "forbidden" food in the world. Think about the healthy choices that you make more often, and you will automatically begin to do it subconsciously. Just like you can train your body to exercise, you can train your mind. Tip #2: The trick about "drinking when you're drinking" Remember to hydrate as you go this often gets lost. My solution: Add sparkling water to your wine. Yes, sparkling water allows you to keep the same great flavor, plus it makes your drink last longer and hydrates you at the same time. And if it's a cocktail you're after, be very savvy about the mixers. Tip #3: Tantalizing and festive yet healthy and easy party foods Create (easily) a beautiful spread of red, white and blue with fruit and cheese platters.

Tip #4: Don't go hungry We often think that we save calories by skimping on lunch, but when we go to a party hungry we almost always end up overdoing it and consuming way more than what we normally would. Instead, try grazing throughout the day on healthy foods (fruits and veggies). Tip #5: Plan your day in advance When you plan in advance, the chances of maintaining that summer body will not fall short or be sabotaged. Try to make time to shop for healthier foods, so that you have them on hand. Don't forget to find time to exercise! There is always time to get in a quick workout. Tip #6: Be the winning guest Not sure what the snack options will be at a party? Be the winning guest in so many ways by bringing your own beautiful, festive, yet easy and healthy dish (plus, it's a great conversation starter). Try sprinkling halved bananas with a little bit of cinnamon and sugar and grill each side for two minutes. You can stock up on frozen yogurt or light whipped cream to top it off (just remember tip #1). Now you can sit back, enjoy the festive occasion, and welcome in summer, all without feeling guilty!

Biggest Health Myths—Debunked! Myth 1: Washing your hands in warm water kills germs Why it's false: We've all learned that washing your hands in warm water is best for fighting germs, and taught it to our own kids, but studies now show, it's not really true. While it is true that heat kills bacteria, the water would have to be 212 degrees F, the level of boiling water, in order to kill germs. The hot water people generally use for hand washing is 104-110 degrees F. So as long as hands are rubbed and scrubbed, and they are dried with a clean towel, the temperature of the water doesn't matter. Time spent washing matters more for killing germs, according to the CDC and the Mayo Clinic, both of which recommend 20 seconds of scrubbing.

Myth 3: Carbohydrates make you gain weight Why it's false: The truth is that total calorie intake determines body fatness, not the proportion of dietary fat or carbohydrates. This myth came into being as a pendulum swing from the 'fat will make you fat' trend to the 'carbs will pack on the weight' trend of the Atkins diet era. Research has shown that people gain weight because they consume too many calories and most probably are not getting enough exercise either.

Myth 4: Blood is blue and turns red when exposed to air Why it's false: Sorry to say, there's not such thing as blue blood. As much as people believe that blood is blue when they look at their veins, it's an optical Myth 2: Tilting your head back cures nosebleeds. illusion. It's similar to the blue-black dress vs. Why it's false: It might feel intuitively right to tilt white-gold dress photo that recently went viral online. Blood appears blue because the skin diffuses your head back to stop a nose bleed, but actually you should sit up straight and tilt your head slightly light. As far as blood being blue until it comes into forward. Tilting your head forward will prevent contact with air, think about when you get blood drawn. The technician uses a vacuum-sealed tube so blood from running down the back of your throat, which can cause choking, and prevent it from going no air is inside. When blood is drawn it doesn't come out blue, it comes out a dark maroon red into your stomach, which might cause stomach color. Mystery solved. upset.

Myth 5: Parts of your tongue taste different flavors Why it's false: The truth is that all taste sensations come from all parts of the tongue. The source of this myth came from a paper written by Harvard psychologist Edwin Boringt in which he interpreted a 1901 German study that suggested that each part of the tongue tastes exactly one basic taste. From that a 'tongue map' was created noting sections of the tongue correlated with specific tastes. All of this has been debunked with research. Myth 6: You can get infections from a toilet seat Why it's false: There's a time-honored myth that people get STDs and other viruses from toilet seats. But the only way to get an STD on toilet seat is having sex with someone who has an STD while sitting on toilet seat. The truth is most bad germs that cause diseases can only live for a very short time on the surface of toilet seat. It is extremely, extremely unlikely to get sick this way. Myth 7: Stretching prevents injury Why it's false: For many years, coaches and athletes alike stuck by the mantra that stretching prevents injuries. Anecdotally, this might seem to be the case, but further scientific evaluation of this claim suggests that there is no difference in injury rates between those who stretch and those who don't. Myth 8: Fat can turn into muscle Why it's false: We've all seen retired athletes whose bodies have gone to pot. While it might seem like their former muscles have 'turned to fat,' this is not true. Nor is it true that fat turns into muscle if you exercise. Fat and muscle are two different metabolic tissues and one does not convert into the other.

How to Find Your Purpose During Retirement Why you need a purpose With average life expectancy now approaching 80, Americans can look forward to spending almost two decades enjoying retirement. That free time can seem heavenly at first until the days stretch on. [After] the honeymoon stage comes the disenchantment stage. People feel like everything is purposeless. They can get depressed, and we would like to avoid that stage. Discovering your purpose, your driving force, is a proven way of escaping that emptiness. From what we know from research, those that have a sense of purpose are happier. Their adjustment to retirement is better and their marriages are happier. What’s more, studies show that retirees with a defined, actionable purpose have improved cognitive function and a reduced risk of stroke. Write your values and interests down Nothing helps crystallize your thoughts like seeing them

on paper. Take time to contemplate your strongest-held interests and central beliefs. Then, rate them. No, really. Put them on a scale and rate them 1 to 10. This exercise will help you prioritize what’s most important to you, which can guide you toward your essential purpose. Ask yourself how you want to be remembered Contemplating your legacy, the accomplishments that live on after you pass, is key in resolving your reason for being. Imagine your grandchild is talking to his own grandchildren about you. What is said? Would he say you were generous and kind? Would he say you were reliable? These questions can help guide you towards finding a purpose for which you will be proud to be remembered, and is compatible with who you are and how you are seen by others.

Enter your state of flow A state of flow is, "when time goes by and it flies, since you’re so immersed what it is you do. For some people, it’s a social engagement. For others, all it takes is a favorite solo activity, like fishing or reading. Is it a stamp collection? Is it when you write or paint something? Maybe it’s when you’re with friends. Consider the details, and use them as a guide toward finding your purpose: What are you doing? Who is with you? Don’t confuse purpose with passion While your purpose and your passion can match up, they might not. Be careful with the word 'passion. Passion is stronger than purpose. Most people have or can find something that gives them purpose, but isn’t necessarily something they feel passionate about. Expect to find a sense of purpose in retirement, where you feel needed, valued and contributing but not necessary passion. Fewer people find passion most find purpose.

Seeing Spots: When To Be Concerned

Spots popping up in your vision may definitely raise the alarm, especially for those of you out there blessed with 20/20 vision. Let’s face the truth though, ladies. Regardless of what we eat, or how much we work out and commit ourselves to our healthy lifestyles, we are going to age! Eye floaters, flashes in our vision, and spots popping up every now and then are fairly common afflictions, and are typically not detrimental to our wellbeing. However, if you have found that you’ve been suffering an increase in eye floaters, flashes or spots, it may be time to call your doctor for a quick checkup! What are you seeing? Over time, the vitreous gel that coats our eyes liquefies, and little clumps of the gel break loose and float in the watery substance. Most people will notice that there are spots or an indistinct blurriness to their vision, especially when they are staring at a bright light such as the sun or a computer monitor. In essence, as the light strikes our eyes, it reflects off of these tiny pieces of debris and creates a shadow. That shadow, rather than the floaters, it what causes the spots. The aging process: As we age, the vitreous gel within our eyes thickens or thins, which can lead to the formation of clumps or strands. We classify these little buggers as eye floaters, and in most cases they are completely harmless. They are nothing more than the bits of gel that have not dissolved fully. However, in rare cases, the shrinking of the vitreous gel can wear on the retina and can result in either a macular hole (which can impair our

central vision) or a detached retina. This spurs an increase in floaters and can cause flashes in your vision as well. Retina tears in particular, which are often accompanied with flashes or stars in your vision, can be threatening to your sight, so if you suspect an issue, it is essential that you seek out medical attention. The treatment options: According to research, it is estimated that more than half of all people will have had a vitreous detachment by the time they are 80 years old, and in most cases they little floaters will be virtually harmless. However, for those who do indeed suffer a retinal tear or a macular hole, there are treatment options available. For floaters or spots that are seriously impacting your vision, the most common treatment is a procedure called a vitrectomy. In these cases, the vitreous gel is actually taken from your eye so that a surgeon can remove any debris. For retinal tears, many experts recommend retinal detachment surgery. This involves a more in-depth procedure where specialists utilize laser or freezing treatment (also referred to as cryotherapy) in order to mend the tear and inhibit any more lasting damage to the retina. Keep in mind that in the majority of cases, these spots and floaters are completely normal, especially as we age. However, if you have noticed that your symptoms have worsened or your eyesight is failing, we definitely recommend contacting your eye doctor for more information!
