JCC Family Fun Day and Carnival/Street Fair The JCC and the South Shore Rotary Club of Staten Island will partner again to present the JCC Family Fun Day and Carnival/Street Fair on Sunday, June 2. (see page 2) This event will have something for everyone in the family. An exciting new activity this year will be a Character Breakfast where kids can interact and have a photo-op with fun costume characters. A light breakfast will round out the event which will be held in the Stolzenberg Social Hall from 10am– 12pm. The fun continues outside at the Carnival on the soccer field with giant inflatables, carnival games, the Games on Wheels truck, and arts and crafts. Adding to the fun will be a whole schedule of entertainment with the Susan Wagner High School Chorus and Theater Group participating. If that’s not enough, the JCC parking lot will become a giant Street Fair with commercial and Not-For-Profit vendors and a Trunk-a-Thon where people can sell from their trunk or table set up behind their vehicle. What a great opportunity to sell what you have or promote your business. The outdoor activities will take place from 12–4pm. Food will be available for purchase at the Carnival. This is a rain or shine event – in case of rain, it will move indoors. Save with a Combo Pack for the Character Breakfast and the Carnival is $20, or admission to the Character Breakfast is $10 for children, 2 and over, adults $5. Carnival admission is $15 per child and is free for adults and children under 2. If you are interested in participating as a commercial vendor or as an individual looking to do their Spring cleaning, contact Sylvia Cohen, 718.475.5246 or scohen@sijcc.com.

BP Molinaro To Receive Allan Weissglass Distinguished Leadership Award On Sunday evening, June 9, the JCC of Staten Island will pay tribute to its long-time friend, Borough President James P. Molinaro. To honor him, a gala evening is being planned. At this event he will be presented with the prestigious Allan Weissglass Distinguished Leadership Award. The award is given to an individual who has shown dedication to improving the JCC by a lifelong commitment to enriching and strengthening Jewish life and identity, serving as an agent for social change and human betterment, and demonstrating social vision and leadership in the entire community. James Molinaro exemplifies the criteria for receiving this award not only for his dedication, leadership and generosity to the JCC, but also his work on behalf of all Staten Islanders. The mission of the JCC emphasizes serving the needs of our youth, our seniors and those with special needs. The Borough President takes great pride in having paid particular attention to these three groups during his tenure. He has been an advocate for youth because they are our future, seniors because they have earned it, and those with special needs because they need our support. To enable the community to show its appreciation, there will be a commemorative journal to mark this special occasion. The proceeds from this event will support the JCC’s social services that benefit the entire community. We encourage you to participate by becoming a sponsor. If you have any questions, please contact Sylvia Cohen at 718.475.5246 or scohen@sijcc.com.

33rd Annual Golf & Tennis Classic Want to have a great time and support a great cause at the same time? Then come to the JCC’s 33rd Annual Golf & Tennis Classic on Monday, July 22, at the Richmond County Country Club. Last year’s event was a huge success from the numbers that participated, to the amount of funds raised which provided scholarships to needy children so they could attend the JCC’s Camp or Nursery School. The generosity of our attendees and sponsors allowed us to provide these children with an outstanding JCC experience. We are delighted to announce that IDB (Israel Discount Bank) will once again be our Presenting Sponsor at this year’s event. Their generosity will help us meet our goal to give even more scholarships to deserving applicants. Our very special thanks goes to Dr. Daniel and Joanne Megna for their second year of support of The Kids Club for Special Kids and IDB Bank for their support of the Day Habilitation for Young Adults. For one year, they each have had their names associated with these important JCC programs, respectively. These naming opportunities were part of the exciting Live Auction at last year’s dinner. The committee, co-chaired by Gail Castellano and Alan Poritz (Golf) and Dr. Josh Kanner (Tennis), is planning an event that will have give-a-ways, contests, delicious food and a great golf and tennis experience. Non-golfers are also welcome to attend the dinner which will honor Joe Delaney, Founder of Bread of Life, with the “JCC Community Service Award”, the Cutrona Family (Jennifer and Bob Cutrona, Sr. and Laura Gotlin Mayes), with the “JCC Distinguished Service Award” and the South Shore Rotary Club with the “JCC Pride of Staten Island Award.” A $10,000 Limited Grand Prize Raffle will be drawn the evening of the event. Second and third prizes will be $1,000 each. Only 300 raffles will be sold so the odds are great. A raffle ticket can be purchased for $100. Buy one for yourself or share the cost with friends. Save the date, Monday, July 22. If you haven’t received your invitation, need more information about sponsorships, attending or buying a Grand Raffle Ticket, please contact Sylvia Cohen, 718.475.5246 or at scohen@sijcc.com.

Garden Dedicated in Memory of Karen Goldberg

Sunday, April 14 at the Bernikow JCC a group of about 40 CLLD/JCC members gathered to honor one of their dear friends Karen Goldberg who passed away last year. Led by Pat Carroll, over $2200 in small donations was raised to have a garden dedicated in her honor. The garden is located near the front of the building and bears a plaque with her name. In a poem written for the dedication, Karen’s friends said “Karen took great pride in the knowledge that she was a Jew and she believed that nothing in life could go wrong with Judaism on your side.” If you would like more information on how to honor a friend or family member with a memorial garden or special tribute, please contact Kevin Brosnick, Director of Individual Giving at 718.475.5256 or at kbrosnick@sijcc.com

Carol's Corner What is the healthiest thing we can do for ourselves? Exercise The National Institute on Aging states that regular exercise and physical activity are very important, especially to older adults. In fact they suggest that it is risky to your health if you do not exercise. They state that when older adults lose their ability do things on their own it doesn't just happen because of aging, but because they have become inactive. Older adults who do not exercise on a regular basis can loose ground in four areas. • Endurance • Strength • Balance • Flexibility These are very important functions as they help you to keep healthy and independent. Research suggests that you can maintain or partly restore these four areas through exercise. So why not start right here at the South Shore JCC. We have many classes geared for the older adult and we offer all levels of fitness. Our expert, certified and very motivating group fitness instructors will help you on your way to becoming healthier, stronger and feeling great about yourself through our wonderful group fitness classes. We offer many of today's popular classes geared for the older adult. Here are some of their favorites: Zumba Pep classes (aerobic dancing with segments of strength and endurance) Tai Chi Yoga and Seated Yoga Stop into our Fitness Center and grab a menu of classes and let us help you on your journey to a healthier and stronger happier you. Connect-to-Recovery Helping Islanders Since Day One When Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of Staten Island, UJA-Federation's Connect-toRecovery (C2R) began addressing the immediate needs of its victims. Cleaning and baby supplies were Debbie Burack, Field Crisis Counselor, needed by the truckload. visits Connect-to-Recovery clients As the cleanup progressed, mold remediation became a paramount issue. Many are up to rebuilding, adding appliances, electrical and plumbing work, kitchen cabinets, wall board and more to the mix of seemingly endless needs. More than 800 individuals and families have been aided by the C2R staff who are working through the JCC with UJA's partner agencies like NYLAG, MetCouncil, JBFCS and others. Help has come in many forms: gift cards, volunteers, skilled professionals, legal advice, mental health counseling, food pantry, home visits, strollers - virtually everything you can imagine and more. It’s been done with a coalition of Jewish leaders, volunteers, representatives of government agencies and the generosity of people from all over the country.
