LONDON COMES TO MAIDSTONE London: Night & Day is an exhibition of recent works by emerging Maidstonebased photographer Matt White. The show will open with a charity preview in aid of local deaf charity, Hi Kent, on 1st May at Stepping Stones Studios, Maidstone and will run until the end of the month. London: Night & Day is a blend of architectural landscapes, nightscapes and street photography that uses sunrise, sunset and the reflective properties of the Thames. Matt said, “Hopefully these shots give a feel of central London, its beauty and colour at all times of the day. To be able to help Hi Kent with an auction of artwork by members of Making Art Work and Stepping Stones is an added bonus." www.mattwhitephotography.co.uk

Four Brazillians on a Bridge

THREE BROTHERS FROM KENT MAKING WAVES IN THE INDIE-POP WORLD Kent-based band The Hotelles recently marked their third release with an A/B side single release of “Movie Reel” and “She Hasn’t Slept For Weeks”. Brothers Tom (21, vocals/guitar), Ben (18, bass/vocals) and Sam (14, drums) produce a distinctly fresh and ‘British’ guitar sound, and have already attracted the attention of fashion company Vans, with their music being featured in a promo video for the international fashion/sports brand. www.thehotelles.com

For all you fringe lovers, whip open your diaries and pencil in some dates for one of Kent’s most looked-forward-to events – the Maidstone Fringe Festival. Once again, the festivities will be taking over multiple Maidstone venues – some new for 2013 – in order to bring you five days of live music from 2nd to 6th May. Over 100 bands and artists will perform in a bid to promote and showcase unyielding new talent, with a prominent focus on celebrating localised performers from Kent and the South East. Alternative rock, indie, blues, acoustic, reggae and folk will account for the main musical influences, whilst an additional sideline of hilarious stand-up comedy and live street performers will be there for your entertainment. Right on your doorstep and with most events free admission, there really are no excuses not to go! www.maidstonefringefestival.co.uk

Chock full o’ creative studios, businesses, galleries and eateries, Folkestone’s Creative Quarter is one of our favourite spots in Kent to get our arty fix. Strolling along the picturesque cobbled Old High Street and the busy thoroughfare of Tontine Street, you’ll come across plenty of artists hard at work, including painters, photographers, film makers and designers of all kinds. Spend the day enjoying the shops and galleries, and end it taking in a live show at the Quarterhouse. The Creative Quarter, Folkestone CT20 1RL 01303 245799 www.creativequarterfolkestone.com

But we must admit, that bold statement may very well be true. Imaginative décor, delicious food (good prices too!), and some of the best coffee in Canterbury make it a must-visit for any of you java junkies out there. HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING EVENTS COMING TO KENT THIS YEAR. WHO KNEW KENT WAS SO ENTERTAINING? APRIL

Sean Lock's Purple Van Man

Dirty Dancing

2-20 April We all know the soundtrack, and we've all tried to recreate the lift at one point or another, so it's music to our ears to hear that this classic is dirty dancing its way onto the stage at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury this spring. It's too good an opportunity to miss out on, so put the date in the diary and get the girls involved. Nobody puts baby in the corner! www.marlowetheatre.com

Russell Kane's Posturing Delivery

10 & 24 April If you've never managed to catch one of Mr Kane's shows, this is your chance. Playing two dates in Kent, the first at Assembly Hall Theatre in Tunbridge Wells (10th April) and the second, the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury (24th April), you're spoilt for choice. If Kane is good enough to take home the main prize at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, then he's good enough for us. www.assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk

16 & 18 April Since his captaincy on 8 Out of 10 Cats, Lock has quickly become one of the nation’s favourite comedians admired for his slightly, lets face it, insane anecdotes and unique humour. For this reason, tickets for his latest stand-up tour, Purple Van Man, have sold like hot cakes. Lock will first play The Orchard Theatre in Dartford (16th April), followed by The Central Theatre, Chatham (18th April). www.orchardtheatre.co.uk www.medwayticketslive.co.uk

One Night with Joan Collins 17 April

Debbie does Dallas and quite frankly, Dartford does Dynasty as Joan Collins comes to the Orchard Theatre to talk secrets and stories from her career. Flamboyant in both her personal and work life, Collin's return to her theatrical roots looks to be nothing but a success. With a massive career spanning over 60 years in the industry, I'm sure the stories are good. www.orchardtheatre.co.uk

Assembly Hall Theatre in Tunbridge Wells. Don't miss out on your opportunity, as this feel-good, international hit sensation musical will most certainly have you dancing in your seats. www.assembleyhalltheatre.co.uk 7 May

He's back with his charm offensive...well maybe more just offensive, this time in Kent's Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone. One of the UK's top comedians famed for his distinctive and original style – his new tour suitably named Gagging Order, is set to be no different. www.leascliffhall.co.uk 15 May If you are often branded the sarcastic one amongst your friends, maybe introduce them to this man. Jack Dee, one of the UK's most popular standups, is Mr sarcasm himself, but hilarious with it. Appearing this May at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford, a trip to see Dee agonise over his annoyances is comedy gold. www.orchardtheatre.co.uk

Bedgebury Concerts 2013

Leeds Castle Open Air Classical Concert 13 July

This July will once again see Leeds Castle, one of the most magnificent castles in England, host this annual spectacular open air classical concert. Kick back and enjoy a sarnie or too from your packed picnic as John Rigby conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Military Wives will also return this year, as will a display from a classic World War II aircraft and the anticipated firework finale. www.leeds-castle.com

If you're not often hanging around the likes of Margate, but have heard through the grapevine that it’s becoming the cultural hub of Kent, this is your chance to get in on the action as The Vaccines are only coming to the coastal town’s Winter Gardens. Having opened for The Stone Roses and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, this talented English indie rock band is welcome on our turf any day of the week. www.margatewintergardens.co.uk 6-11 May

If you like comedy and you like a trip down to the local pub, who better to see than Al Murray; everyone's favourite funny pub landlord. Murray's Only Way is Epic tour will first show at The Central Theatre, Chatham (27th June), followed by Winter Gardens, Margate (28th June). www.medwayticketslive.co.uk www.margatewintergardens.co.uk

The sun will have its hat on and will hopefully be coming out to play at this year’s Hop Farm Festival. Situated in the Hop Farm in Paddock Wood, near Tonbridge, this boutique festival has been running since 2008, priding itself on a no sponsorship, no branding and no VIP policy. Think you can handle that and slum it, the 2012 line up featured legend Bob Dylan, as well as Damien Rice, Primal Scream, Maximo Park and many more. 2013 is yet to be confirmed but we’re excited. www.hopfarmfestival.com

For the third year in a row, Maidstone's Fringe Festival will take over the town's top venues to showcase talent from Kent, the South East and further a-field. With over 100 bands performing across five days, in genres ranging from alternative rock to acoustic to reggae, you really will be spoilt for choice. www.maidstonefringefestival.co.uk 1 May

A Summer Squall

Music from the likes of Jools Holland, McFly, Peter Andre and many more will be here in Kent, all in the name of charity. This music fundraising weekend is in aid of Demelza Hospice Care for Children, The Children's Development Trust and Teens Unite Fighting Cancer, and is supported by Liberty Property Trust and Kent County Council. Great music for a great cause… www.musiconthehill.org.uk

Sound Island Music Festival

27 & 28 July Who knew so many stars could be packed into one weekend? Well, Kent's Quex Park near Margate knew, as they have only gone and booked them. 2013 is looking bright for this annual music gathering as the confirmed line up includes performances from the likes of Plan B, Rita Ora, Jessie J, Lawson and many more. www.quexpark.co.uk

Lounge on the Farm

26-28 July One of the county's most popular festivals, Lounge on the Farm quite literally allows you to lounge about on a farm, with a few choice dance moves thrown in for good measure of course. This indie/alternative festival is held annually on Merton Farm in Canterbury and is well worth a weekend ticket. Whilst the 2013 line-up is yet to be confirmed, 2012 showed the calibre of acts to be expected as Emeli Sande, The Wombats, Rudimental, Fake Blood and many more performed. www.loungeonthefarm.co.uk

AUGUST Hevy Fest

2-4 August If you are looking to show off your wild streak this summer, you're in luck as you can quite literally do just that at Hevy Fest, the rock and metal music festival suitably based amongst the beasts themselves, at Port Lympne Animal Park. Headlining will be American hard-core punk band Black Flag, with many more artists tbc.

24-26 August Run by Ramsgate Arts, this three-day festival manages to annually transform this small coastal town into somewhat of a creative epicentre. A Summer Squall presents an eclectic mix of work, from exhibitions and workshops to dance, theatre and film. Visitors will also get the chance to browse the artists’ studios, with the option to purchase their work. www.ramsgatearts.org/a-summer-squall

SEPTEMBER Canterbury Food & Drink Festival

27-29 September Oh, how we love food. Food, glorious food. If you love food as much as we do, you haven’t lived until you’ve been to the Canterbury Food & Drink Festival. A full weekend of all-things-delicious, you can stroll through Dane John Gardens sampling hundreds of different treats, enjoy live music and entertainment, and generally have a fabulous time stuffing your face. www.canterbury.co.uk

OCTOBER Ed Byrne's Roaring Forties

10 October If comedy is your thing, catch the hilarious Ed Byrne on his latest stand-up tour when he swings by Assembly Hall Theatre in Kent's very own Tunbridge Wells. Sure to brighten up the dull inbetween month of October, voice-over star, actor and award-winning comedian Byrne is well worth the trip. www.assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk

NOVEMBER Royal Philharmonic Orchestra: Tchaikovsky 16 November

Tchaikovsky is coming to Dartford! Well not quite...but the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is, and they’ll be paying tribute to the Russian composer, so it's kind of true. For one night only, soak up the culture and enjoy this spectacular concert at Dartford's Orchard Theatre. Who knew! www.orchardtheatre.co.uk

Ready Steady Cook Live on Stage 26 November

If you enjoy cooking, or like us, you enjoy watching cooking (and eating), but not actually doing the cooking, this could well be the show for you. Ready Steady Cook will not only be touring in Kent, but it is inviting an audience to witness it at its unpredictable best, LIVE at the Central Theatre in Chatham. www.medwayticketslive.co.uk

DECEMBER Rochester Dickensian Christmas Festival

7-8 December Held annually since 1988, Rochester's Dickensian Christmas Festival doesn't get old (well not in a traditional sense). This festival still pays homage to the big man himself, Mr Charles Dickens, who spent five of his childhood years in Medway, and his final years in Gad's Hill. It's never too early to get the Christmas spirit on, so pop this date in the diary and make your way down to the celebrate with the best of 'em. www.whatsonmedway.co.uk/festivals/dickensianchristmas

Leeds Castle Christmas Market

7-22 December Set in 500 acres of parkland, where better to plough through the stress of Christmas shopping than 'the most beautiful castle in England’, Leeds Castle. The Playhouse Theatre

W H I T S T A B L E

THE PLAYHOUSE THEATRE WHITSTABLE IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE LINDLEY PLAYERS AND FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS IN 1982. THE LINDLEY PLAYERS BRING A WIDE RANGE OF QUALITY PLAYS AND SHOWS TO THE THEATRE, FROM HARD-EDGED DRAMA TO PANTOMIME.

The Lindley Players always strive to present a balanced programme of shows throughout the year with something for everyone, and 2013 is no exception. Their traditional pantomime Mother Goose played to packed audiences from 22nd January to 2nd February. The next Lindley production will be the comedy Enjoy by award-winning playwright Alan Bennett, opening on 9th April. This play is about an elderly couple facing the demolition of their terrace house in Leeds and who are forced to play hosts to a rather ‘unusual’ council official. Back to the classics, and opening on 11th June, Shakespeare’s Macbeth – a dangerous and bloody play – this time set in post-war Britain. Then for something completely different: Music Hall at the Playhouse. This extravaganza of a show runs from the 23rd to 27th July. Directed by that doyen of the music hall art, Dr Howard Lee, and featuring song and comedy all in the best possible taste. From 24th to 28th September, the Lindley Players present Beasts and Beauties, eight European folk tales that combine comedy, magic and just enough traditional fairytale gore to entertain an audience. Many theatrical groups and stage acts hire the theatre. From the 18th to 20th April, Theatrecraft present the well-known comedy Calendar Girls by Tim Firth. The play revolves around WI members coming up with an ‘alternative calendar’ to raise money for research – naked ambition! LITERARY The Elementalist by Andy Coughlan As I sit here writing this it is meant to be spring – i.e. warm, and a bit sunny. For some reason the weather has decided that it's winter and snow is falling heavily; rather apt really for the book I am reviewing, The Elementalist , by local writer Andy Coughlan. The main character, Barin Elicerio could be forgiven for being even more fed up about his lot in life, than I am about the weather today. Formerly serving as an Elementalist – someone who could control both the physical and spiritual world – he is framed for crimes he didn't commit, and is forced to hang up his cloak and go under house arrest in a little seaside town. The story starts to pick up pace very early, with a huge storm heralding the arrival of a pirate ship and a less than quiet life for Barin. He learns from the pirates that there have been strange happenings all over the world, and it isn't long before he finds himself drawn into all sorts of terrible adventures, as he battles to solve the mysteries, rescue the woman he loves, and save the world, before it's too late. Rather than be yet another ‘geeky’ sci-fi fantasty book about wizards and goblins, The Elementalist proves to be very accessible to almost anyone, featuring elements (excuse the pun) from many different genres of storytelling, all expertly woven into one rivetingly good yarn. And with more twists and turns than a twisty turny thing, it's a book that will keep you guessing, and ensure that you keep turning the pages until the bitter end. An outstanding first book from a brilliant local writer, and I look forward to see what else Andy can dream up. The Elementalist is available on Kindle from Amazon, and is priced at £3.99.

MUSIC Space at the King's Hall, Herne Bay From years of personal experience, it’s almost always the event organisers that make or break an event. And on that score, Viva La Sociale have been doing a fantastic job over the past couple of years, making King's Hall in Herne Bay ? once a rather staid old dance hall ? one of Kent's most interesting venues in which local and national acts can perform. Ably assisted by local lighting/sound company ReGen, it's fair to say these folks know how to throw a party! The recent Space gig epitomised what it is that Viva do so well. Rather than add 'special

22

guests' as an afterthought, Space were ably supported by two carefully selected up-and-coming local bands, both of whom already have a respectable following. The first guest act, The Fruit Group? put on a fine performance, ensuring their well-crafted, memorable indie-pop tunes grabbed the audience's attention. Next up Kaleidophone took to the stage, instantly impressing with their colourful microphone stand lighting, and infectious head bobbing pop-rock tunes. Finally the main event started, and it certainly did not disappoint. Space, a band very much at the forefront of the British indie music scene in the midnineties, leapt to the stage proving that their timeless tunes, inspired by great 60s acts such as the Kinks and the Who, had lost none of their vibrancy and freshness. Their performance, enhanced by mohawks, fez hats and giant sunglasses, had retained all of its energy and had people smiling and dancing along almost instantaneously. Incidentally, it's great to learn that Space have a new album coming out, Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab, I'm sure it will definitely be worth a listen!

FILM Oz The Great and Powerful

The cynical world of 2013 is a very sad place for us grown ups ? but that's not necessarily anything new. In 1939 the makers of MGM's The Wizard of Oz were quite cynical when realising Frank Baum's 1900 novel; they thought the public were too sophisticated to accept that Oz was a real world, so instead they made Dorothy have a bump on the head. The critics, being simple souls, loved this. The public it seems, did not, reasoning as to why the film took a long time to become as popular as it is today. Oz The Great and Powerful , directed by Sam Raimi, appears to be not at all popular with the critics, who seem to harp on about how it's not a patch on The Wizard of Oz, even though it's very apparent the current film is not meant to be just a prequel, but in fact is based on aspects from all fourteen of Frank Baum's Oz-related novels. Indeed I have already read a lot of bad reviews on Oz, but then I've never had much faith in critics. Ironic perhaps, because Oz The Great and Powerful, is a film very much about faith. Faith in oneself, faith in friends, and faith in things we can't always see or understand. Performances are great, James Franco is very likeable as conman-turnedhero, Oscar Diggs, whilst Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz are great as sisters Theodora and Evanora, and the lovely Michelle Williams is fantastic as Glinda. Technically, Oz rivals its 1939 counterpart, pushing the boundaries with use of colour and sound. The jump from the 'real world' to the land of Oz was every bit as clever as when Dorothy did that jump from sepia to technicolour all those years ago and the use of 3D is implemented superbly, and appropriately. Oz The Great and Powerful is about discovering yourself. It is about giving up the chase of what you don't have and embracing what you do. Which is strange, because as I recall, that was what The Wizard of O z was about too, something that nearly every 'film critic' out there seems to have failed to see.

Taking the reigns on ‘Here Come The Bombs’, Gaz creates something mature and engaging, on which he impressively plays all of the instruments himself.
