Peter Mitchell “ You went to Methodist Sunday School; Torridon Road Infants taught you how to country dance and enjoy Enid Blyton; Catford Secondary School for boys had a drama club and a shop opposite that sold ‘Vincent Black Lightnings’; then you and your mates went out and got a job.” By 1968 I lived in North London (midway between David Bailey at Chalk Farm and Don McCullin at Hampstead - as coincidence would have it) and had abandoned the Ministry of Housing and Local Government in favour of the ‘revolutionary’ art college at Hornsey. That a monster hitch-hike around North America made me the lost soul I am today. I came to Leeds at the start of 1972 and set up a silk screen business (calling myself ‘Winged Cobra Workshop’) and had a first show of my work at the Education Gallery Leeds which earned me a foothold in the fast-developing photo culture. We have never really caught up with the USA and Europe in their appreciation of the photographic image. All that (talented amateur process) is big business now - world-wide photo festivals - dozen upon dozens of competitions - auctions and limited editions etc.etc. - a global digital input that permits all on planet Earth to participate. During this years ‘PhotoLondon’ I got fed up (and it wasn’t just the persistent rain) and sought out a fellow (as I regard myself) Leeds character that I much admire. Despite being poorly that morning he granted me an audience. It was a spectacular 45 minutes. Two days later Alan Bennett sent me a postcard apologising for not knowing me and thanking me for “my lovely book”. Job done! And so it goes with me and my photography and Leeds.
