H

ey everyone! It’s December and that means it’s Christmas! I’ve been waiting for this ALL year. I love Christmas so much, I love all the decorations, the lights and the festive joy it brings to everyone, such a fabulous time of year!

I

started singing Christmas tunes in November - After the fifth of November to be exact. After Halloween I was in the mood for Christmas right away! Everyone celebrates Christmas differently, so this festive month I thought that I would share with you 7 different ways people celebrate Christmas around the world. One: Every Christmas Eve, in Venezuela, the city’s residents head to church in the early morning – so far, so normal – but, for reasons known only to them, they do so on roller skates. Yes that’s right, they go to church on roller skates! This unique tradition is so popular that roads across the city are closed to cars so that people can skate to church in safety, before heading home for the less-than-traditional Christmas dinner of ‘tamales’ (a wrap made out of cornmeal dough and stuffed with meat, then steamed). Two: The Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul Sampernandu) is held each year on the Saturday before Christmas Eve in the city of San Fernando – the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines.” The festival attracts people from all over the country and across the globe. Eleven barangays (villages) take part in the festival and competition is fierce as everyone pitches in trying to build the most elaborate lantern.

6

Originally, the lanterns were simple creations around half a metre in diameter, made from ‘papel de hapon’ (Japanese origami paper) and lit by candle. Today, the lanterns are made from a variety of materials and have grown to around six metres in size. They are illuminated by electric bulbs that sparkle in a kaleidoscope of patterns. They look absolutely beautiful! Three: In Austrian tradition, St. Nicholas rewards nice little boys and girls – which is a common belief across the globe-, while Krampus is said to capture the naughtiest children and whisk them away in his sack. In the first week of December, young men dress up as the Krampus (especially on the eve of St. Nicholas Day) frightening children with clattering chains and bells.I’m not sure how I feel about this, it would scare me to death… Four: In the 13 days leading up to Christmas, 13 tricksy troll-like characters come out to play in Iceland. The Yule Lads (jólasveinarnir or jólasveinar in Icelandic) visit the children across the country over the 13 nights leading up to Christmas. For each night of Yuletide, children place their best shoes by the window and a different Yule Lad visits leaving gifts for nice girls and boys and rotting potatoes for the naughty ones.

I’ve heard about this before, there have been many old stories about this. They dress in traditional Icelandic costume and are pretty mischievous. Their names hint at the type of trouble they like to cause: Stekkjastaur (Sheep-Cote Clod), Giljagaur (Gully Gawk), Stúfur (Stubby), Þvörusleikir (Spoon-Licker), Pottaskefill (Pot-Scraper), Askasleikir (Bowl-Licker), Hurðaskellir (Door-Slammer), Skyrgámur (Skyr-Gobbler), Bjúgnakrækir (Sausage-Swiper), Gluggagægir (Window-Peeper), Gáttaþefur (Doorway-Sniffer), Ketkrókur (Meat-Hook) and Kertasníkir (Candle-Stealer). Five: One of the most unusual Christmas Eve traditions can be found in Norway, where people hide their brooms. It’s a tradition that dates back centuries to when people believed that witches and evil spirits came out on Christmas Eve looking for brooms to ride on. To this day, many people still hide their brooms in the safest place in the house to stop them from being stolen. Six: Since 1966, a 13-metre-tall Yule Goat has been built in the centre of Gävle’s Castle Square for the Advent, but this Swedish Christmas tradition has unwittingly led to another “tradition” of sorts – people trying to burn it down.

I personally think this is mean. Who would want to burn the poor goat down? Since 1966 the Goat has been successfully burned down 29 times – the most recent destruction was in 2016. Who would do that to a giant goat?

Has YOUR Business SLOWED DOWN?

Seven: Not to be confused with Weihnachtsmann (Father Christmas), Nikolaus travels by donkey in the middle of the night on December 6 (Nikolaus Tag) and leaves little treats like coins, chocolate, oranges and toys in the shoes of good children all over Germany, and particularly in the Bavarian region. St. Nicholas also visits children in schools or at home and in exchange for sweets or a small present each child must recite a poem, sing a song or draw a picture. In short, he’s a great guy. But it isn’t always fun and games. Continuing with the ‘evil’ approach to Christmas a lot of traditions seem to have, St. Nick often brings along Knecht Ruprecht (Farmhand Rupert). A devil-like character dressed in dark clothes covered with bells and a dirty beard, Knecht Ruprecht carries a stick or a small whip in hand to punish any children who misbehave.

Diary of a teenager So before I start I just want to say hi to my new super-fans – you know who you are! These three people loved my column that much that they decided to review it on snapchat. It was so nice to see you spending your Saturday afternoon doing that, honestly lovely. So Christmas is here and hopefully less evil than some of the traditions above. I’m super, super, super excited. I love Christmas dinner, mince pies, Christmas cake and all the food that comes with it! In fact my absolute favourite is Christmas pudding. I could live off of that beautiful food. I honestly could eat it all year round. I LOVE it! I feel like I’ve been deprived of Christmas shopping considering that I bought most of it in October. I was just too excited to wait! I made a list of who I need to buy for and I sorted it out then and there. To be honest, I’m glad I missed the Christmas rush, that’s never a pleasant thing. My Nana came back from Tenerife last Saturday and she had brought presents back for us all. She bought me and my brothers a giant Toblerone each and Maddie a humungous bag of gummy bears. She also has made us each our own teddy and Christmas decoration and they are beautiful! I love them so so so much! That’s all I have for this month, have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Lots of love...

THE PERFECT 2017

D

ecember finalises the second of our 2-part guide to creating the perfect Christmas for your friends and family. In this second part we take a look at decorating your Christmas cake, homemade truffles and the perfect posh-nosh for that special get together...

D

ecember really is here! The shops are brimming with festive delights and people are talking about their plans for the Christmas season. Santa is busy checking off his present lists and a month of pure magic is about to unfold! In the second part of our 2 part Christmas planner we are going to take a look at decorating the Christmas cake that you all made last month! We are also going to show you how to make some fantastic homemade truffles for your guests to enjoy and help you to plan the perfect Christmas dinner party menu for a special meal at home!

DECORATING YOUR CHRISTMAS CAKE! Hopefully the cake you made in our Christmas Special part 1 has been maturing nicely. It’s so simple to decorate with shop bought Marzipan and ready to roll icing. You will need: 8 cake board 500g Marzipan 1kg ready roll icing 2tbsp apricot jam 1. Firstly place the cake on the board so that the top becomes the base.

12

2. Next using a piece of string measure from one side of the board to the other across the top of the cake. This will give you a guide to how big your sheet of marzipan/icing will need to be. 3. Soften the jam in the microwave for 30 seconds and then using a pastry brush, paint thinly on the cake avoiding the big bits to make it sticky. 4. Dust your work surface with a covering of icing sugar and knead your marzipan until it becomes softer and more pliable. 5. Now carefully roll out using your string as a guide to size for covering your cake. 6. Carefully lift, using your rolling pin to help support and lower onto the cake. Gently smooth the top and sides with your hands. Trim any excess around the base with a sharp knife. Leave to firm for 24 hours. 7. After 24 hrs using water, thinly paint the marzipan with the pastry brush to make it sticky and repeat the above process with the icing. Leave to firm again for around 24-48 hours. Your cake is now ready to decorate.

There are so many lovely shop bought decorations that you can just attach with a little icing sugar mixed with a tsp of water so that it is firm. Why not try rolling out some more icing and cutting out stars, finishing off with silver balls. Whatever you decide, make sure you finish with a lovely ribbon tied round the base, it hides a multitude of mistakes and looks simply stunning! Have fun and be creative or get the kids involved and design the perfect centre piece for your Christmas table!

SCRUMMY CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES These Christmas specialities can be given as a gift, beautifully wrapped in Christmas gift boxes, or they can be displayed after your dinner party for your guests to indulge! Whichever you decide these scrummy chocolate truffles are guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face! You will need: 200g/7oz dark chocolate, broken into pieces 175ml/6fl oz double cream 5 tbsp brandy, rum or other spirit of your choice (optional) cocoa, icing sugar or finely crushed nuts, to finish 1. Cover a baking tray tightly with two layers of cling film to put the truffles on to set 2. Tip the chocolate pieces into a bowl. 3. Pour the cream into a pan and bring to a rolling boil.

4. Pour over the chocolate and stir until all the chocolate is melted. If you want to add booze, mix it in at this point. 5. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature - this will take about 1½ hours - by which time it should be set. 6. Using a melon baller or teaspoon, scoop out bite-sized pieces. Dust your hands with icing sugar to stop them sticking and roll the pieces into balls. 7. Roll in sifted icing sugar, cocoa or crushed nuts and place them on the prepared tray. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week and they'll be delicious!

...Continued in centre pages: Wow your friends this Christmas with the perfect dinner party menu for an amazing and very memorable meal with friends or family....

Hey my furry followers and fellow flea fans. ‘tis the time of festive cheer in your human’s calendar and I have some surprises in store for you all this month! So what’s it like to be a canine at this wondrous human time of year?

Y

our poor human is going to be very busy this month and possibly stressed at the thought of other humans attending their habitat. So here’s my canine advice to help them find their festive joy, for you four-legged friends: The build up to the party season: Be especially patient with your humans during this time. They may appear to be more stressed-out than usual. It will be normal for them to come home with large bags of things they call gifts. Do not assume that all the gifts are yours. Be tolerant if your humans put decorations on you. They seem to get some special kind of pleasure out of seeing how dogs look with fake antlers. Crazy!

2. Don't drink water in the container that holds the tree. 3. Mind your tail when you are near the tree.

4. If there are packages under the tree, even ones that smell interesting or that have your name on them, don't rip them open.

Discretion - 5 easy rules: Your humans may occasionally invite lots of strangers to come visit during this season. These parties can be lots of fun, but they also call for some discretion on the part of we dogs: 1. Not all strangers appreciate kisses.

2. Do not eat off the buffet table.

The Christmas Tree Rules: They may bring a large tree into the house and set it up in a prominent place and cover it with lights and decorations. Bizarre as this may seem to you, it is an important ritual for your humans, so here are some things canines need to know: 1. Don't pee on the tree.

16

5. Don't chew on the cord that runs from the funny -looking hole in the wall to the tree.

3. Beg for goodies by all means but do it........ subtly.

4. Be pleasant, even if unknowing strangers sit on your sofa. 5. Don't drink out of glasses that are left within your reach.

Manners 4 simple rules!: Likewise, your humans may take you visiting at Christmas. Here your manners will also be important: 1. Respect the territory of other animals that may live in the house.

2. Tolerate children 3. Turn on your charm! 4. A big man with a white beard and a very loud laugh may emerge from your fireplace in the middle of the night. Do not bite him! A Dog's Christmas Promises

Carrick Veterinary Group has recently relocated its Chesterfield branch to Holywell House (just off the donut roundabout). The new surgery is situated in a Grade II listed building, with private parking available and state-of-the-art facilities to help us care for your pet. As part of this exciting move, we are running a selection of discounts to both new and existing clients: The Healthy Pet Club – join our HPC scheme for a monthly fee, and receive exclusive benefits including vaccinations, worming and flea treatments throughout the year, a comprehensive six month health check every year, and great discounts with 10% off food, medication and other services and products. 10% Off Voucher– please bring the voucher below with you, and present it to reception to redeem your discount. Terms and conditions will apply. Recommend A Friend Scheme – ask at reception for further information on this scheme. If you recommend a friend who then visits us for an appointment, you will receive a £10 discount towards your pet’s next visit. Gold Card Scheme – we are offering discounted rates for people who must hold a valid Gold Card from Derbyshire County Council, and present it at the time of payment to qualify for 15% off treatment, during Monday - Friday.

1. Christmas tree light bulbs, are not food. (For use at any Carrick branch, towards any consultation, product or service charge)

2. I know that the cat and the snowmen are not real, therefore I will not pull them out of the Christmas tree. 3. I will not attack next door's outside Christmas tree, and drag the string of lights through the hole in the fence.

Expiry: 28/12/2017

19

STARTER: BAKED GOATS CHEESE WITH HAZELNUT CRUMB & BALSAMIC ONIONS

4. Arrange the salad leaves on plates and spoon the onions on top. Add the goat‘s cheese, drizzle with any juice from the onions and serve immediately.

MAIN COURSE DUCK BREAST WITH POTATO & APPLE ROSTI, APPLE PUREE & ROASTED FIGS

1. Halve the goat‘s cheeses horizontally and mix the nuts with the crumbs. Coat the cheese in the egg, then the nut mixture. Mark the cut side of the cheese with a large piece of nut to show which side up it should be. 2. For the onions, heat the oil in a non-stick pan, then add the onions. Stir well and cook for 10 mins until softened and starting to turn golden. Tip in the balsamic vinegar and honey, season and stir over the heat until syrupy. 3. To cook and serve, heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas. Place the cheese on a sheet of baking parchment on a baking tray and bake for 20 mins.

20

4. Remove from the oven and set aside to rest for 5-6 minutes. 5. Place the apples, water and a pinch of sugar into a saucepan over a medium heat, bring to a simmer then cover with a lid and cook for 4-5 minutes. 6. Beat the apples to a purée then season with the sugar and salt.

Here’s what you need: 2 x 100g goat's cheese 50g hazelnuts, chopped 25g breadcrumbs 1 egg, beaten red chicory leaves, rocket and watercress, to serve For the onions 2 tbsp olive oil 2 red onions, halved and thinly sliced 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 3 tbsp mild-flavoured clear honey

3. Turn the duck breast over and fry for another 1-2 minutes, then roast in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until cooked to your liking.

7. Heat a frying pan until hot, add the figs, cut-side down and fry for 12 minutes, or until charred.

Here’s what you’ll need: 4 duck breasts, trimmed 2 Bramley apples, chopped 2 tbsp water 1-2 tbsp caster sugar 4 figs, halved 75g/3oz butter 1 shallot, chopped 250ml/9floz red wine 250ml/9floz chicken stock For the potato and apple rosti 400g/14oz potatoes, grated 200g/7oz Granny Smith apples, grated 75g/3oz crème fraîche 1 egg yolk 75g/3oz butter, melted 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/ gas mark 6. 2. Heat an ovenproof frying pan until very hot, add the duck breast, skinside down and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown.

8. Heat a frying pan until hot, add half the butter and the shallot and fry for a couple of minutes, or until just softened. 9. Add the red wine and cook until the volume of the liquid has reduced by half. 10. Add the stock, bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer until reduced by half again. 11. Season with salt and black pepper then whisk in the remaining butter.

For the Potato & Apple Rosti: 1. Place the grated potatoes into a tea towel and squeeze out any excess water. 2. Place into a bowl with the grated apple, crème fraîche, egg yolk and season well. 3. Stir until well combined. 4. Heat an ovenproof frying pan until medium hot then add the butter and place two 7.5cm/3in metal rings into the pan.

Lemon Shortbread 5. Spoon half the potato mixture into the rings and press down well with a spoon. 6. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown, continuing to press down. 7. Remove the rings, carefully turn the rostis over and cook for 3 -4 minutes, or until golden brown on the other side. 8. Transfer to a baking tray, repeat with the remaining potato mixture and roast the rostis in the oven for 5-10 minutes, or until tender and cooked through. To serve: Place a rosti into the centre of serving plates. Carve the duck into slices and place on top of the rosti. Place the fig and apple sauce alongside and finish with a drizzle of red wine sauce.

DESERT VANILLA CREME BRULEE WITH LEMON SHORTBREAD

1. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/ Gas 2. 2. Pour the cream into a saucepan. Split the vanilla pod lengthways and scrape the seeds into the cream. 3. Chop the empty pod into small pieces, and add them to the cream. 4. Bring the cream to boiling point, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for five minutes. 5. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, beat the sugar and egg yolks together in a large heatproof bowl until pale and fluffy. 6. Bring the cream back to boiling point. Pour it over the egg mixture, whisking continuously until thickened - this indicates that the eggs have begun to cook slightly. 7. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve into a large jug, and then use this to fill 4 ramekins to about twothirds full. 8. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bainmarie.) 9. Place the bain-marie onto the centre shelf of the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in middle.

Here’s what you’ll need: 426ml Double Cream 100ml full-fat milk 1 vanilla pod 5 large egg yolks 50g golden caster sugar, plus extra for the topping

125g butter, room temperature 180g plain flour 1 tsp lemon zest 2 drops of lemon extract (optional) 65g caster sugar, plus more for sprinkling on top of the shortbreads

10.Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed. 11.When ready to serve, sprinkle one level teaspoon of caster sugar evenly over the surface of each crème brûlée, then caramelise with a chefs' blow-torch or under the grill.

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C/ gas mark 2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in the lemon zest and essence. 3. Sift in the flour and roughly combine. Using your hands, bring the mixture together to form a dough. Wrap in clingfilm and refrigerate for 15 minutes. 4. Remove from the fridge, roll out on a floured surface to around 3-5mm in thickness. Cover the disc in cling film and return to the fridge for a further 15 minutes. 5. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter (or any other cutter you may want to use), cut out your shortbread shapes. Place on a greased and lined baking sheet and, using a fork, prick holes into your shapes. Cut larger holes in the top if you wish to tie them with a pretty ribbon once cooled. 6. Sprinkle with sugar and bake for around 12-14 minutes. 7. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Note: Don't let your shortbreads brown too much!

KNOWS BEST!

H

ello there my lovelies! Well the first weekend in December finds us all putting up our trees and Christmas decorations, how exciting!

I

love Christmas and this first weekend in December is a very busy weekend for us all I’m sure! There’s trees and decorations to set up! That said, all our family love doing it, we grown ups will spend all of the weekend on it whilst the kids get fed up after a while and go back to what ever they were doing before! We love Christmas in our house, we grown ups will persevere with the endless placing of decorations, tinsel, cards, holly and lights until it's all done and looking lovely and seasonal! We always tend to go over the top when it comes to Christmas and decorations, but the effort is so worth it to see the finished effect. Every year we seem to add more decorations and with doing them early, we have the rest of the month to enjoy them! Of course as soon as Christmas is over they come straight down and the household goes back to normal, but it's lovely to see the house in all its Christmas glory. I think it helps to keep you in the Festive Spirit and embrace the opportunity to spend quality time together with friends and family. Of course baking will start in earnest this month, as again we make lots of everything Christmas! We'll be munching on mince pies all month and listening to the Christmas classics all month too!

26

Thank goodness for the exercises, otherwise we would enter the New Year a whole lot fatter! My lovely daughter in law Emily and I have already got lots of our Christmas food stocked up. We always start early, as preparation is the key to a happy and festive month in our house! All the food that you can either freeze or store dry in the cupboard will be stacking the shelves. So cupboards are groaning under the weight of tins of biscuits, chocolates, nuts, sweets and dried fruits! Of course my daughter in law is always really organised with her present shopping as well and by now she has almost finished. Talking about presents if you're looking for something special to buy as a gift or a special treat for yourself this Christmas, then take yourself off to Matlock to Emily’s lovely shop (The Cats Pyjamas) she has some fabulous gifts available and it’s not expensive at all, but it is luxurious! You can't go wrong with fabulous goodies that smell wonderful, and she has something for all ages and to suit all budgets. Don’t worry if you’re struggling to get out, you can shop 24 hours a day, seven days a week on her amazing website! Visit her online shop now, simply google: The Cats Pyjamas Matlock, you’ll have a ball!

Nana’s Christmas Pudding Cheesecake! Cross a Christmas pudding with a cheesecake and what do you get? A fantastic alternative festive dessert with a crunchy ginger base and creamy filling

Ingredients For the base:

200g ginger nut biscuits, crushed 30g light muscovado sugar 1 tsp flaky sea salt 110g unsalted butter, melted

For the filling:

240g Christmas pudding 30ml brandy 30ml stout 1 orange zested 2 x 280g tubs full-fat cream cheese 300ml pot double cream 200g light muscovado sugar 2 vanilla pods, split and seeds scraped

To Decorate:

2 clementines light muscovado sugar, for sprinkling

Method

1. To make the base, mix the gingernuts and sugar in a large bowl and sprinkle in the flaky salt. Pour in the melted butter and mix with a wooden spoon to form a biscuit crumb-like mixture. Press into a 20cm round springform cake tin, spreading the mixture in an even layer to the corners. Chill in the fridge for 30 mins until set. 2. Put the Christmas pudding, brandy, stout and orange zest in a blender, and whizz to a purée. 3. Using an electric hand whisk, beat the cream cheese with the double cream, sugar and vanilla seeds, then fold through the purée. Spread the mixture over the biscuit base and leave to chill in fridge overnight. 4. The next day, peel the clementines, slice into rounds and place on a baking tray. Sprinkle them with sugar, then blowtorch until caramelised and leave to cool. Release the cheesecake from the tin and arrange the clementines on top. This will keep for three days in the fridge.

W

hat have you all been up to since I last saw you? Well for me I'm still busy with my crafting, at the moment I'm making decorations for a our Christmas tree which goes by the log burner in our kitchen, I’m hoping some of the grandkids will let me show them what I'm making and have a go at making some themselves. I find crafting very therapeutic, as I just sit and create beautiful things that are filled with love and patience! I know you can buy reasonably cheap decorations from lots of the big discount stores but, there’s nothing as satisfying as making your own if you have the time, and as oldies we do have more time. After saying that, I'm smiling as I seem to be involved in lots of activities at the moment. I am still enjoying my Pilates and it's very good for my old body. I feel so much fitter for doing it. I'm also doing something called ‘Lishi’ which is a bit similar to ‘Tai Chi’. It's just lots of stretching , which is very good for old bones and it helps to keep me more supple so I don’t seize up so much! You know what it's like when you've been sat for a while, well this stops me getting so stiff all the time. Of course the weather doesn't help us oldies, especially if it's wet as well but believe me this does help.

W

ell lovelies how are you all doing with your Christmas present hunting? Now that's something I do enjoy. I love utilising the local shops in and around our village. There’s always something special or unique and it’s not expensive either. Of course like everyone, I also like to buy gifts online. I can sit in the comfort of my own home whilst doing it. That's one of the things I do enjoy about modern technology, I love my iPad, I can sit by my log burner and browse the Internet, fabulous! But like most of you, I have to make my money go further with things how they are at the moment. I’m sure we'll all be okay when we leave the EU but like all of you I do not like all the uncertainty it's causing. Let's hope it all turns out okay as we've no choice now but to go with it all. I just wish all the politicians would stop falling out and just work together as a team. Great Britain was great before we joined the EU and I'm sure we'll be great again, just needs careful managing, but I'll not start on my soap box again lovelies. My saying for this month:

I wish you all a fabulous family Christmas, until next month! God Bless Nana.xxx

What is the

SECRET to a Successful 2018?

Everybody loves a good secret. In fact, the juicier, the better. Why? Because we all love being insiders. We love the feeling of exclusivity, of knowing something that’s just ours and no one else’s. So what is the secret to success, wealth and happiness then?

M

oney. Fame. Travel. Relationships. Or the freedom to do whatever, whenever, and with whomever you want. However you characterise success, it’s something that nearly everyone is after. While our definitions of success might differ, the desire to succeed at one thing or another remains constant. Still, even though we might all want to succeed at something, we don’t always do what it takes to follow through. Sometimes, we just get fed up, and we end up throwing in that proverbial towel. We give up when the going gets tough. But not everyone does. So what separates them from the rest of the world’s population? How is it that one person is willing to do all that it takes to reach their goals, while another person gives in to silent resignation at the first sign of resistance? Why is one person willing to sacrifice nearly everything in order to live the life of their dreams, while others are too afraid to take the next step in fear of suffering through a catastrophic failure or embarrassment? It’s quite clear that success has nothing to do with our initial set of circumstances.

30

Some of the most poor and disadvantaged people in the world have achieved the greatest successes of all time. Oprah Winfrey was born to a single mother on welfare and was physically and sexually abused as a child. J.K. Rowling was divorced, had a daughter, and was living on government assistance before publishing the first book in the Harry Potter series. Success in life has nothing to do with where you start. Sure, people who start advantageously in one area or another might have a leg up, but it has almost nothing to do with where they end up in life. Success transcends circumstances. So what is it then? What’s the magic formula? What’s the secret to success in life, if you will? How can we go from a living a mediocre life, to one of excellence in every manner possible? Can anyone do it? Or is it just some pipe dream that lives in the hearts and minds of the foolish? In this comprehensive 331 page masterpiece ‘Rich Man and the

Dream Maker’, you will discover

life-changing knowledge and uplifting teachings.

No matter who you are, no matter where you are, no matter what your current circumstances, the secrets revealed in this book are going to change your outlook on life forever!

(Dairy & Gluten Free)

Ingredients:

For the coconut whipped cream 400g can full-fat coconut milk (must not contain stabilisers) 140g icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 50g desiccated coconut For the cakes 100g coconut oil 225g golden caster sugar 3 large eggs 200g gluten-free self-raising flour (the mix should include xanthan gum) 100ml coconut milk 1 tsp vanilla extract

Is the ideal venue for Birthday Parties, Engagement Parties, Wedding Receptions, Anniversaries, Community Events, Public Meetings & much more Clay Cross Social Centre has one of the finest dance floors in the area. It is spacious and comfortable, with a furnished lounge area adjacent to the bar and a fully equipped kitchen. In good weather there is an outdoor seating area and during the evening and weekends a large car park.

You can hire the Main Hall from just ÂŁ10 per hour including the bar, which is managed by Clay Cross Parish Council and offers fantastic prices.

Method:

Chill the can of coconut milk overnight. The next day, make the cakes. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with muffin cases. Put the coconut oil and sugar in a large bowl and beat together for about 5 mins until light and creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time. Add the flour, alternating with the coconut milk, then add the vanilla extract. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tin, then bake for 20-22 mins or until the cakes are golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Remove the cupcakes from the tin and cool on a wire rack.

The whipped cream is best made within a few hours of serving. Open the can of coconut milk upside down and pour off the thin liquid. Scoop the thick coconut milk into a large bowl, add the icing sugar and the vanilla, and whisk for 2-3 mins until soft and fluffy. Spread the whipped cream onto the cupcakes and sprinkle with the desiccated coconut.

Y

ou don’t have to be a musician to be in love with music. It plays a significant part in shaping our personalities and identities. Your music list defines you whether you can play an instrument or not. Revealing some of the greatest musicianship over the next few months, I would love to share with you some of the all time greatest songs ever recorded!

W

hether you’re trimming the tree or heading out to a Christmas party, you’ll need the perfect soundtrack to get you in the Festive Spirit. There’s so many to choose from but, when it comes to ‘the most wonderful time of the year’, it’s all about the big hitters. Here’s my top 10 Christmas songs of all time, counting down in a TOTP style to number one: 10. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday by Wizzard Is it one of the best Christmas songs of all time? Catchy tune + bemused children in bobble hats = muchos royalties for Roy Wood. They don’t make videos like that these days, do they? 9. Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms Such a fun, festive song. Chances are this one either makes you think of Lethal Weapon or Mean Girls. Either way, it’s a great Christmas tune!

8. Driving Home For Christmas by Chris Rea Wait, wait, If you’ve ever lived half a country away from your family and have packed up the car with presents to head home for Christmas through the snow and the ice and the M1, you must appreciate at least the spirit of this song. Have you never done said drive listening to a playlist starring this song so you can sing the obvious? Shame on you. It definitely deserves its place among the top Christmas songs of all time. 7. Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade Personally, I find this song a bit like mince pies. Everyone loves the Noddy Holder screech? But has any festive compilation been complete without its inclusion? Bung it on your Christmas playlist, for the chorus if nothing else. ‘It’s only

just beguuuuuuun’!

6. The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole Yes, I have included this instead of White Christmas by Ol’ Blue Eyes. The Christmas Song is smoother than a freshly resurfaced ice rink and more than deserves its place among the best Xmas music of all time. The clue is in the name. You can practically smell the roasting chestnuts. If a Christmas pudding could sing, this is what it would sound like! 5. Winter Wonderland by Doris Day The 1964 version is probably too saccharine for some, but ’tis the season for tooth-aching treats. Whichever version you prefer (Perry Como’s is more robust), this song evokes the Christmas of all our dreams, one of snowflakes falling gently on our eyelids, curling up in front of crackling log fires and romance. An old-school favourite amongst you all, I'm sure!

4. Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt The sexiest Christmas song ever written! Eartha Kitt purrs more than sings the immortal line ‘been an awful good girl’ with an eyebrow raised. It’s basically the festive equivalent of Happy Birthday, Mr President! 3. Last Christmas by Wham!

that makes this song a Christmas classic. Or maybe it’s just 80s nostalgia. Either way it’s bound to be blasted at the office Christmas party at some point!

2. All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey

Deadline: December 15th

Ah Mariah, the Christmas fairy with a vocal range so high she can probably communicate with Dolphins! 1. Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl This clearly is the best Christmas song ever? Yes, Shane MacGowan is totally out of tune and appears to have just rolled off a park bench with an empty bottle of supermarket own-brand shandy, but that’s the point. If a Christmas pudding could sing, this is what it would sound like!

ccording to the Guinness Book of World Records, "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby is not only the best-selling Christmas/holiday single in the United States, but also the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chesterfield & Mansfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
