This November the world will mark the100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Why should we remember? Why should we stop and think about those events that happened so long ago?

B

y the end of the First World War there were very few people in the countries that took part who remained unaffected. The war reached out and touched almost everyone’s life in some way or other. Children grew up in the shadow of battle, their fathers absent or lost. Women became directly involved, picking up the pieces of industry and agriculture as the men went off to fight. By 1918, they too could join the army and serve their country. Men enlisted, or were called up, in their millions, being sent to fight in places that many had never heard of before. It was a global struggle. Life changed forever. Nothing was ever the same again.

6

In the opening moves of the war, both in the West and the East, the nature of modern warfare soon became clear. Armies were numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Modern weapons rapidly caused heavy casualties and laid waste to whole communities. Soldiers went to ground, digging trenches and dugouts that soon began to feel almost permanent.

The crucible of war also proved very creative. Aircraft developed quickly, taking death and destruction into the sky. New ways of fighting made better and more effective use of huge quantities of shells and bullets manufactured on a scale never seen before. The power unleashed by modern war resulted in previously unimagined losses. Over 9 million soldiers died as a result of the fighting. Food shortages, sometimes deliberately inflicted by blockade and sometimes resulting from failed harvests, weakened the people who remained on the home fronts. Nearly 6 million civilians died from disease or starvation. Almost 1 million more were killed as a direct result of military operations. In all, the estimate of dead resulting from the war stands at over 16 million. And then there were the wounded. More than 21 million. Some recovered. Others were never the same again, either in body or in mind.

I

t was not just people who died. The old world order was also irreparably damaged. Both the Austro-Hungarian and Turkish empires were destroyed. From their ashes a host of new countries emerged, in Europe and the Middle East. Russia was wracked by revolution and became the world’s first Communist state. Monarchies fell. A new world order emerged, with the United States developing a League of Nations that they then opted not to join. The consequences of many of these political changes can be heard today reverberating around the world, a century later. Millions of people across the world still feel a connection with the Great War for Civilisation. They knew the people whose lives were changed by it. They remain moved by the enduring works of art that were created as a response to it. They live with its unresolved political legacies. The First World War created a common sense of history that, decades later, still links people from many disparate nations.

Sometimes the First World War feels like distant history. The jumpy black and white films, the unfamiliar clothes and the horses pulling wagons, all look like something from a world long forgotten. Yet the last soldiers who fought in the war have only recently died. Only a few of the 1914–18 generation, who witnessed the war but were too young to take part, are still alive. The war is slipping inexorably beyond the fringes of living memory and, as the Centenary of 1914–18 approaches, we have to work harder to make sure we do not forget.

10 things to get you in the mood for Christmas 2018

T

he festive season is nearly upon us, but if you’re feeling a bit Bah Humbug about it all, here are a few cracking ideas to get your Christmas spirit sky high!

1. Christmas Markets

3. Films

5. Baking

Check out the local media and you’re sure to find a vast array of fantastic and famous Christmas Markets! What better way to kickstart your Christmas adventure than the picturesque city of either York or Lincoln with its Castle and Cathedral! Or why not take a stroll to the lower pavements of the Crooked Spire. Wherever you choose to visit, you're sure to find a range of festive stalls, scrummy food delights and of course Christmas festivities galore! If these Christmas bursting markets don’t encourage you to get your fill of mulled wine or stock up on baubles, I really don’t know what will!

Not much beats the annual trip to the cinema to see that cheesy festive flick. However embarrassing it my be to admit to your friends or family, it is a definite festive event you should not pass on. Nothing is quite as Christmas feeling as seeing a cute Christmas character make it through the narrative with a happy ending!

Do you remember those delicious treats that your Grandparents used to always make at Christmas? Why not get your hands on the recipe and have a go yourself?

2. Decorations The only time of year when ‘tasteful’ decorations can be thrown out of the window! Lights, colours and tack galore are all allowed when sprucing up your home, and it can be the perfect way to get that Christmas-y fix!

12

4. Food Food, glorious food! This is about the only time of the year where it is completely socially acceptable to stuff yourself silly! Indulgence make for the perfect Christmas. Not only Christmas Day, when your eyes will always be bigger than your belly when it comes to the turkey, were talking about embracing the entire build up to the BIG Day! Go on, dip your hand (more times than you care to admit)

Granted, they won’t taste a scratch like your Grandma’s, but the smile on your face when making them (maybe to a few Christmas tunes) will be priceless!

6. Music It’s time to play on repeat that beloved Wham ‘Last Christmas’ Blaring it out around the house, you just can’t help but sing along! Or why not buy a Christmas compilation, its a sure way to cheese up your mood and to get the spirit of Christmas ignited in your life! CHRISTMAS DEADLINE: NOV 15TH

7. The Christmas Tree Artificial or the real deal, it doesn’t really matter. What does matter though is the effort you make in dressing it! Streams of tinsel, flashing lights, and that prized decoration you loving made back in reception that your mum and dad still treasure should all have their place on the tree!

8. Shopping We all love a bit of retail therapy, but making sure we remember everyone’s gifts is most certainly the most stressful part of Christmas preparations. Secret Santa’s are a great way to make presents fun with friends, and it saves you some money not having to buy for absolutely everyone in the group. Although present buying can be stressful, it’s can also be uplifting and great fun too! Especially when you see the faces of those you love light up on the big gift day!

9. Christmas Lights Don’t miss Chesterfield’s annual Christmas Lights this year. It is the perfect way to start the Christmas countdown.

10. Family and Friends Last but not least is your family and friends. One of the very best things about Christmas is the sharing of togetherness. So buy cards and send them out to those who you may not be seeing over the period, host a Christmas party at yours and don’t forget to have yourself a very, merry Christmas yourself!

"I'm pleased to tell you that our advert in the Shoppers Guide magazine generated the best response from all other major advertising outlets we placed our advert in. These included the DT, and Sheffield Star! We generated this information by asking the general public to fill in a short survey stating where they had seen our 'White Lightning Event' advertised. I'm pleased to say that the Shoppers Guide received the most votes as voted for by the general public at our last show at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield! We will defiantly use your services again as your magazine is obviously well received!" ...White Light Events CHRISTMAS ADVERTISING - BOOK B4 NOVEMBER 15th

Have you ever caught your dog looking embarrassed? Well as Man’s Best Friend can feel emotions, such as love, joy, and anxiety, you humans may never know the truth! The jury is still out on whether or not we canine buddies can feel embarrassment, but photos, videos, and stories seem to suggest that we do!

T

his month my fellow friends and I decided to hold a debate on the subject and we found some pretty funny stuff out! With the decision split, let’s share the evidence with you humans and let you decide for yourselves! The Time The Cat Stole His Bed Fido might be much bigger than Fluffy, but that doesn’t mean his feline friend is at all intimidated by his size. In fact, your kitty may dominate her canine sibling! Fluffy has been known to nonchalantly sprawl out for a nap in Fido’s bed, and refuse to budge, even when he asks politely. Poor puppy!

The Bad Haircut If you’ve ever gotten a bad haircut, you can sympathise with this one. Some dogs seem to act shy and embarrassed after being clipped. If Fido has a heavy coat, he may very well feel ‘naked’ after a close clipping. If you think your pup hated his haircut, talk to your groomer about other options that won’t leave him feeling redicoulous1

“I pooped on the floor and then took the sofa to So my fellow it onto eat it... furry friends I am disgusting!”

it is time to take our sweet revenge and unleash the vendetta!

“I eat crayons and poop rainbows!”

The Lampshade Elizabethan cones, often jokingly called ‘lampshades’, can be very important to your pup’s health. If your pooch ever injures himself or has surgery, these protective devices will keep him from chewing or licking his wounds or stitches. If your vet recommends a cone for your dog, be sure to follow his advice. That said, ‘Fido’ seems to know he can sometimes look a bit comical wearing the ‘lampshade’!

16

“Mum brought me to work and I peed in the office on my first day!”

“I locked mum out of her car so I could eat all the take-out Chinese and half a pizza! She had to call a

“I chewed up a bottle of blue food colouring!”

“I Locked myself in the bathroom, but don’t worry, I let myself out!”

Does kitty dream of slinking down the catwalk? If so, give her a name that screams “I’m a star!” Like these actual pet names … Cats: Cleocatra Bing Clawsby Demi Meow Alexander the Grey Dogs: Linda Barker Bettie Poops Virginia Woof Iggy Pup

A Dogs Horoscope: Scorpio: October 24 - November 22 Determined, intuitive, powerful and highly excitable On the naughty side: Jealous, obstinate and compulsive behaviour LIKES: Being part of the action, keeping busy doing dog things and getting what they want when they want! DISLIKES: Not being the centre of attention or having nothing to do and no one to play with. Hate to be ignored Scorpio dogs are the most intense, profound, powerful characters in the animal zodiac because even when they appear self-controlled and calm there is a seething intensity of emotional energy under that placid exterior. They have this way of looking at you which makes you just want to go over to them and pat them, which is exactly what they are after. In their everyday behaviour they give the appearance of being withdrawn from the centre of activity, yet those who know them will recognise the watchfulness that is part of their character. They are so intent on receiving constant attention that will go to great lengths to receive it, even to the point of doing something they know their owner disapproves of, just to receive some type of recognition. They make great friends with other dogs easily but if they see the other dog is receiving more attention, look out, this jealous dog will make it quite clear to the other dog that he is number one. These dogs just love to be around people constantly and want to basically be part of the family to the point of gathering and surrounding themselves with human belongings such as shoes, clothes and basically anything they can get hold of at the time which has been left lying around! Q: What did the cat say when he lost all his money? A: I'm paw Q: What kind of dog likes taking a bath? A: a shampoodle Q: What did the cat say when he lost his toys? A: you got to be kitten me Q: What do you get if you cross a gold dog with a telephone? A: A golden receiver! Remember my human pets, don’t lose your joy, live the life of a Joey! Until next month...WHOOF!

THE PERFECT 2018

N

ovember starts the first of a 2-part guide to create the perfect Christmas for your friends and family. We kick off with early preparation! So let’s take a look at the most divine Christmas cake and some scrummy festive homemade booze ideas!

I

n our house Christmas is one of our favourite times of the year. Having 4 children of our own and mum living with us, our house is always a hub of activity and non more than at this wonderful time of year. We are a family that truly loves the festive season and all that it entails. No sooner has December arrived our festivities begin, after all if you leave it until the actual day it has all come and gone far too quickly for my liking! So this month we begin the approach to the a winter wonderland with our 2 part Christmas Special. In part one of the Perfect Christmas Guide we are taking a look at Festive Preparations. These need to begin NOW! If you want to begin with the most important food preparation then you need to prepare your Christmas Cake!

THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS CAKE!

T

he key to a good moist Christmas Cake is making it in advance around two months before you plan to eat it, so that it can be lavishly topped with brandy! A traditional Christmas Cake may appear to look like a lot of hard work, but it really isn’t, it’s just a case of measuring out all the right ingredients.

20

The recipe I have included is our own traditional family recipe and is perfect for those who don’t like mixed peel which many feel is an acquired taste!

You will need: 325g/11oz Raisins 225g/8oz Sultanas 175g/6oz Currants 150g/5oz glace cherries halved 100g flaked almonds Juice and rind of 1 Lemon & 1 Orange 3tbsp brandy 250g/9oz plain flour 2.5 tsp ground mixed spice 65g/2.5oz ground almonds 200g/7oz dark brown sugar 200g/7oz butter softened (we substitute this for dairy free margarine) 1.5 tbsp black treacle 4 Eggs 1. The day before you want to bake the cake soak the dried fruit, cherries, lemon/orange rind and juice along with the flaked almonds in the brandy overnight.

2. Preheat the oven to 160c/140c fan assisted/gas mark 3. Grease and line the base and sides of an 8inch round cake tin. Cut a piece of double thickness baking paper enough to wrap around the outside of the cake tin leaving a small overlap. It should be deep enough to stand 2.5cm above the sides of the tin. Secure the paper around the outside of the tin with string. This will stop the sides browning too quickly. 3. Sift the flour, mixed spice, ground almonds, black treacle, butter or margarine, sugar and eggs into a large mixing bowl. Mix together with a wooden spoon for a couple of minutes until smooth and glossy. Gradually add the mixed fruit that had been soaking overnight and fold into the cake mixture until it is evenly mixed. 4. Add the cake mixture to the prepared cake tin. Smooth the surface with the back of a metal spoon pressing the mixture down into the tin and levelling off the top. Bake the cake in the centre of the oven for 3-3.5 hours. Test the cake 5-10 mins before the cooking time, insert a warmed skewer into the cake, if it comes out clean the cake is ready. If not let it cook for another 5-10 minutes and try again.

5. Once the cake has completely cooled and not before. Pour a couple of table spoons of brandy over the top of the fruit cake. Remove the cake from the tin. Double wrap the cake in greaseproof paper and foil. Periodically every few weeks unwrap the cake pour over another tablespoon of brandy, turn the cake over and wrap up once again. Remember to alternate pouring the brandy between the base and the top of the cake. Do not store in an airtight container as the moisture will encourage mould growth.

Homemade

IRISH CREAM 1 Cup of Double Cream 1 Can of Sweetened Condensed Milk 2/3rds of a Cup Irish Whiskey 1. In a blender combine all 1 Teaspoon instant of the above ingredients. Coffee Granules 2. FESTIVE LIQUEURS

N

ow, if you like the treats of liqueur at Christmas then here are simple recipes that will amaze you at how simple they are to make. Please note these will need to be made in early November allowing them to mature into Christmas delights!

Homemade

APPLE LIQUEUR

Homemade

6 - 8 Medium sized Apples, sliced and cored 2 Cups of Brandy 2 Cups of Vodka

AMARETTO

1 Cup Of White Sugar 1/2 Cup Of Brown Sugar 1 Cup of Water 2 Cups Of Vodka 2 Tablespoons Of Almond Extract 2 Teaspoons Of Vanilla Extract Let's start with Amaretto. If you like almond flavour, you probably would like this Amaretto recipe. I like the fact that it isn't over-the-top sweet. It can be served as dessert, along with a cup of coffee. It's also good over ice cream! 1. Combine water and sugars in a saucepan over medium heat. 2. Heat until the mixture is boiling, and all of the sugar is dissolved. 3. Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool for 10 minutes. 4. Stir vodka, almond extract and vanilla extract into the mixture. 5. Sterilise 1 large jar and lid. Wash, and place amaretto in jar! 6. Store in a sealed bottle in a cool dark place for 4 - 6 weeks before use...ENJOY!

1. Sterilise 1 large jar and lid. 2. Place apple slices in jar or glass vessel with a lid. 3. Use equal parts brandy & vodka, using enough to cover apples. 4. Infuse until the liquid reaches your desired taste. I let this infuse for about four weeks in the pantry. The combination of sweet apples and brandy gave a great apple flavour, with no need for any sugars or additional sweeteners. 5. After infusing, strain and filter the liqueur. 6. Bottle and ENJOY!

F

estive liqueurs will need to be made in advance . If you get cracking now these are perfect to give to family and friends as unique homemade gifts or indeed good enough to gift yourself!

Homemade

PLUM BRANDY 450g/1Ib Plums 225g/8oz Demerara Sugar 600ml/1pt of Brandy 1. Sterilise 1 large jar and lid. 2. Wash, halve and stone the plums. 3. Place the plums in the jar with the sugar and brandy. 4. Stir well until blended. 5. Place the lid on the jar and store in a cool dark place for 2 months. TIP: For the first 2 weeks shake the jar everyday, this can done by gently tipping the jar upside down and back several times. After 2 weeks shake occasionally.

KNOWS BEST!

H

ello there my lovelies. I hope this Autumn month finds you spirited and in the mood for fireworks! It’s November and the countdown to Christmas is upon us once again...

H

ere we are in November, goodness my lovelies where on earth has this year gone! Is it me getting older or does time seem to fly by these days?

Well this month lovelies, of course it is bonfire night on the 5th. As a child I loved this day and still enjoy it with my grandchildren today. Back in the 50’s we kids would chant a poem regarding bonfire night which started: “Remember, remember the

5th November, gunpowder treason and plot” Well lovelies, this poem got me thinking how did bonfire night all come about, so here goes!

Guy Fawkes was born in York in 1570 and he was educated there. His father was a church lawyer and a prominent Protestant in the city, but sadly he died when Guy was only eight years of age. His mother remarried to a catholic and they moved to the village of ‘Scotton’ near Knarsborough and Guy himself converted to the catholic faith. His schooling continued in York at ‘St Peters', and his school pals included brothers John and Christopher Wright - who were later destined to join the famous gunpowder plot! In the 1570s & 80s York was the centre of the Catholic Resistance. As an adult Guy inherited property in York at Gillygate and Clifton, but on his 21st birthday he sold his

26

estate and enlisted in the Catholic Spanish Army, where he was to spend the next ten years fighting for Spain. It was here that Guy Fawkes became a commander of a unit of soldiers and expert in explosives. Whilst in Madrid he met up again with Christopher Wright, they joined a group of conspirators who together plotted to murder King James and replace him with a Catholic Monarch. It was a very brutal plan. In short they hired a cellar underneath the Houses of Parliament and smuggled in 36 barrels of gunpowder. Guy stood guard and it was his job to ignite the fuse. He was then to go to Flanders and raise forces to join the Catholic uprising. As we know before he could do this he was arrested and tortured. His old school friends Christopher and John Wright were killed in a gun fight in 1605 when they were caught with other conspirators in Staffordshire. In 1605 Guy Fawkes was executed in Westminster by hanging, drawing, and quartering. His remains were sent to the four corners of the Kingdom as a warning to other plotters. I wonder lovelies if that old saying ‘hung drawn and quartered’ comes from this? Had his plan succeeded, Guy Fawkes would have wiped out the Royal Family, the Lords & the Commons!.

Nanas Christmas Bombe You will need 200g mincemeat 6 tbsp brandy or dark rum (optional) 2 tbsp dark brown sugar 350ml double cream 300g Greek style yogurt 100g vanilla yogurt 200g frozen berries (raspberries or mixed summer)

For the sauce: 200g cranberries, fresh or frozen 100g caster sugar 1 tbsp cornflour 2 tbsp water

Method: Mix the mincemeat with the brandy and dark brown sugar and leave overnight. If you are short of time microwave the fruit on high for a minute until sugar has dissolved. Line a two litre pudding basin with Clingfilm with enough overhang to cover the top of the pudding. Whip the cream and yogurts to soft peaks, add the frozen berries and stir. Add mincemeat, mix well. Spoon into the pudding basin, push the mixture down and level off the surface. Ensure the Clingfilm covers the top. Place in the freezer overnight or at least for half a day. Before serving remove from freezer and allow to thaw a little at room temperature. Invert the basin onto a serving plate and tip over to release. You may find a palate knife useful to ease out the edges. To make the sauce place the cranberries and caster sugar in a sauce pan and gently heat until all the sugar has dissolved. Make a paste with the cornflour and water and gradually add this to the cranberries and sugar. Allow to thicken and then remove from the heat.

N

ow is the time to find time to make our Christmas cake and Pudding. Each year we enjoy this run up to Christmas. So now is a great time to sit and plan your family preparations for Christmas. Emily and I will be doing lots of baking and freezing ourselves ready for the run up to our Christmas. It makes it so much easier to enjoy when we know we have done the bulk of the baking well in advance. What's more we actually enjoy the whole experience! The kids of course are already counting down and have lists of what they would like Santa to bring them! Sometimes my lovelies you need to stop and count your blessings and think how lucky we all are to have loving families around us. So lovelies next time you feel a bit fed up or sad, stop a moment & remember all the things that make you happy, and thank God for healthy happy grandkids! My lovely son Jason thinks that as I’m getting older I’m getting grumpier! We all have our moments, when it seems harder to find our joy, but when it all boils down, we should truly count our blessings.

Don't get me wrong sometimes when I wake in a morning and I have a few aches and pains, it's harder to not feel a little grumpy, but then I think that I am glad to be alive in this changing world that is so different to when I was a child. I’m glad to be part of our ever changing lives & all the technology that goes with it . And now I’m 73, I’m allowed to be grumpy if I want! This month I have two very special birthday wishes. My youngest and my oldest grandchildren! ‘Levi’ my youngest is NINE on the 3rd and ‘Becky’ my eldest is TWENTY on the 12th, so lots of love & Happy Birthday to you both! When I look at Levi who is such a joy to me at nine years of age, already in year four and doing so well at school! My uplifting saying for the month:

Charity Health & Healing Fair For Headway North Derbyshire

SATURDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 10am - 4.30pm Until next month, stay safe this bonfire night my lovelies! Much love and God Bless Nana.xx
