Shayne in Thailand October 2017

From Life in a Northern Town

My name is Shayne Rochfort and I am a servant of God, volunteering in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I am the “something” helping several organisations around Chiang Mai. I am helping with websites, coordinating the office, reporting activities as well as opportunities to connect with other foundations and their projects in communities all over Thailand. My main role involves everything and anything, STILL.

Coming home was a little uncertain as to what I would be doing apart from investigating OMS’s options for moving forward into Thailand. Now I am working with Hope Connections Foundation.

Hope Connections Foundation in the Mountains When my Chairman returned from Korea, the foundation participated in a three day trip to a school in the north-west of Chiang Mai province, with a team of 10 people from Korea. The plan was to do some basic training in making coffee and other vocational activities, as well as investigate future partnership projects with the school. We left Tuesday morning for five hour drive up to the village that we were going to visit, we went via Mae Rim, Pai and back into the northwest corner of Chiang Mai province. We arrived at the school about 4pm just after school finished. As we were meeting with the teachers, the team prepared materials for the evening meeting with the boarding students and for the rest of activities with the students during the visit. We had dinner with the school principal and some teachers. After dinner we had singing, games and activities with the students. The next day there was a debriefing session and another preparation meeting for the rest of the trip. After lunch we taught and led two to three hours of activities with the students. As part of this the team was able to connect with hundreds of school students from all grades. My chairman and I spent some time with the school principal looking at the projects our foundation would be trying to complete in conjunction with the communities around the school. We made several videos for people in Thai, Korean and English to ask for funds to assist in completing the dormitory rebuilding project. The rest of the team were out with around 50 school students on the football field doing activities and playing different games with students. You can continue to receive these emails by After dinner we again had a program of activities and presentations with signing up to here the students who live at the school. Shayne in Thailand’s Newsletter The following day, after a short program with the senior students and saying our goodbyes we left and returned back to Chiang Mai. The next day the team joined with another local school and learnt all about the history of that school and gave some gifts to the administration staff. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. John 3:20-21 NIV

Consulting and Networking One of my passions is helping others and so one day this friend of mine asked me to lunch. I had no idea what he wanted to talk about , so I was a little perplexed with it and as I arrived early, I thought more and more about what he wanted to talk about. Anyway, he started off saying he wanted my advice about the possibility of setting up some sort of media partnership ministry to help out organisations in Chiang Mai, in areas where they may lack full time resources, like web design, video production and editing and other creative opportunities. This area has already got a few players in Chiang Mai, so making some strategic connections early on would be vital for success to see long term partnerships created without necessarily stepping on people’s toes. Creative types can be a little worried if they feel someone is moving into their areas, similarly, ministries can be very precious regarding their work and wouldn’t want outsiders interfering, so marketing this will also require some skills. Although, Chiang Mai could definitely use some more people in this area, as there are many organisations who just don’t have the resources to cope with their ministry as well as marketing, administration, let alone getting in front of the camera and You can continue to then all that comes with making watchable videos. receive these emails by So we looked at some actionable steps to move this new project forward signing up to here and I will continue to meet and assist wherever I can. Shayne in Thailand’s Newsletter I also had the chance to help a friend launch a Children’s book by connecting her with a few places she could do reading. We also went to my friend’s school in Hangdong. I drove her down to make it happen.
