DIY “There are things that you can do too - if your symptoms are only mild, then just making your desktop a bit clearer, dusting, and keeping the windows open can make a difference, especially if you notice that you feel better when you’re away from the office.” Nurse consultant Maureen Jenkins points out that people who already know about their allergies may have existing symptoms, and won’t necessarily link any worsening of these symptoms to their office. “One of the characteristics of allergic conditions is that symptoms are there most of the time and can get worse quickly, often for no apparent reason,“ she says. “People are used to this pattern and don’t always attribute it to their workplace.” She explains that allergies can start at any age, and can change through life, and warns: “If aller-

Keeping an eye on diabetes Specsavers. There are approximately 285 million people worldwide who live with impaired vision and blindness, yet 80 per cent of visual impairment is avoidable through treatment and protective measures. While the most significant number of cases of blindness occurs in third world countries, there are conditions which occur throughout the developed world which can also cause people to lose their sight. Diabetes is one of these conditions, with 171 million suffers worldwide. Unfortunately, due to the increase in obesity this is a growing problem throughout Europe and America. To mark World Diabetes Day on November 14th Specsavers Opticas in Marbella has put together the following useful information about Diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy, a condition which affects vision, occurs when the blood vessels in the re-

tina are damaged by the changes in blood sugar levels. This leads to blurry vision which can often come and go throughout the day. If untreated, the condition can become more serious, resulting in the network of blood vessels which supply the retina suffe-

ring permanent damage. This can result in irreversible vision loss. In order to avoid problems with sight, it is important that blood sugar level, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are controlled. Not all diabetes causes sight loss, but it is important to have regular screenings and eye tests so that any problems or changes can be monitored. Most complications can be treated; however it is vital that they are detected early. Once vision is lost, it cannot be restored. Specsavers Opticas is opening in Marbella in November and will be based on Avenida Ricardo Soriano, 12 next to Massimo Dutti. To celebrate the opening of the new Marbella store they will be holding a fun open day event for the public on Friday 23rd November 2012 from 10am.
