An international chemical company may want the Burger land along the Ohio River for a multi-billion-dollar project. WKSU’s Tim Rudell reports.

American Energy Utica Establishes Regional Headquarters in Cambridge The news that Aubrey McLendon’s American Energy Partners (regionally known as American Energy Utica-AEU) has established the company’s regional headquarters in Cambridge has placed the area in the gas/oil activity spotlight. AEU has been aggressive in securing thousands of acres of mineral rights and was strong in its desire to be positioned in the epicenter of the play. The company will create more than 250 well-paying jobs, but the influence from their location in our D.O. Hall Business Center provides an even greater impact on the local economy. Ohio’s Harrison County is No. 1 for Utica oil; Belmont County is tops for natural gas, new report says Source: Bob Downing | The Akron Beacon Journal - December 7, 2015 Harrison County is Ohio’s top oil-producing county from the Utica Shale in the third quarter of 2015, according to new production data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Ohio really has four counties producing oil: Harrison, Carroll, Guernsey and Noble. Production falls off dramatically after those four counties.
Ohio’s top oil well is Antero Resources’ Seneca Unit 3H in Noble County with 48,733 barrels in the third quarter 2015.
Locally, Stark County produced 1,785 42-gallon barrels of oil and Portage County produced 51 barrels of oil. For natural gas, Belmont County is No. 1 in Ohio. The state’s 10 top-producing natural gas wells are all in Belmont. Eight belong to Rice Energy and two to Ascent Resources Utica. The Belmont total for the quarter is 76.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas. Stark County produced 40 million cubic feet and Portage County produced 10 million cubic feet. Drilling in the Utica Shale is starting to decline because of low commodity prices, said Shawn Bennett of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association. Oil production grew by only 2 percent from the previous quarter and natural gas grew by 10 percent, he said. “The third-quarter production results lack in comparison to any quarter over quarter growth we have previously seen with only a 2 percent increase in oil production and a 10 percent increase in natural gas production,” he said. “While there continue to be great wells drilled, the fact remains overall drilling in the Utica is on the decline due to market con-

Antero has two, Chesapeake has two and Carrizo has one. Those wells are in Noble, (2), Guernsey (six), Harrison (one) and Carroll (one). For natural gas, the top well is Rice Energy’s Mohawk 8H in Belmont County with 1.8 billion cubic feet in the third quarter. No. 2 is Rice Energy’s Mohawk 12H well in Belmont County with 1.8 billion cubic feet. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources reported that oil production grew by 111 percent from the first nine months of 2014 to the first nine months of 2015: from 7.4 million barrels to 15.7 million barrels. Natural gas production jumped by 126 percent in that time: from 287 billion cubic feet to 651 billion cubic feet. In the third quarter 2015, Ohio’s horizontal wells produced 5.7 million barrels of oil and 245 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The latest report covers 1,087 wells with production. Gulfport Energy Fund expands to serve Noble County communities Source: December 2, 2015 | Times Leader SCAMBRIDGE, Ohio - Gulfport Energy made a half-million dollar gift to the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio this week. Gulfport CEO and President Mike Moore announced the new contribution, which will build on Gulfport’s existing partnership with FAO through the Gulfport Energy Fund at the foundation. The Gulfport Energy Fund serves the Ohio counties where Gulfport operates. Grants from the fund support projects that increase quality of life, create access to opportunities or identify and implement solutions to community needs. More than $300,000 of the new gift will be invested in the Gulfport Energy Fund for grantmaking in these communities. “We have witnessed the passion and hardworking spirit of the people making a difference in each community and today, we are pleased to increase our investment in Appalachian Ohio with this gift to further encourage and support the region,” Moore said. Because of the additional investment in the Gulfport Energy Fund, Gulfport is expanding the service area of the fund to include two more counties. With the addition of Jefferson and Noble counties to the previous four counties of Belmont, Guernsey, Harrison and Monroe, the fund will now serve six counties in Appalachian Ohio. Throughout the year, tax-exempt organizations are invited to apply for Gulfport Energy Fund grants. PA DEP Approves Jessup, PA Marcellus Gas Electric Plant Source: marcellusdrilling.com MDN has written plenty about a Marcellus gaspowered electric generating plant proposed from Jessup (Lackawanna County), PA. The project is owned and operated by Invenergy, a company that owns and operates electric plants across the country. At various times we’ve said the plant would be 1300 megawatts and 1500 megawatts, based on changing news stories and documents. It seems the final output of the plant will be 1480 megawatts. The project also has, for the first time that we’ve noticed, its own name: the Lackawanna Energy Center. Murray Energy Mine Acquisitions Deemed Positive Source: By CASEY JUNKINS Staff Writer, The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register WHEELING - Murray Energy Corp. offset production declines at its Ohio coal mines last year by increasing yields at some of the West Virginia operations the firm acquired from Consol Energy for $3.5 billion approximately two years ago, Mine Safety and Health Administration Data show. In late 2013, St. Clairsville-based Murray purchased five Consol Energy mines in West Virginia, including the former Shoemaker Mine near Benwood, the former McElroy Mine near Cameron and the former Blacksville, Loveridge and Robinson Run mines in North Central West Virginia. “Overall, the acquisition of Consolidation Coal Co. ... has been a positive addition to Murray Energy Corp. However, there remains to be many changes which must be implemented in order for these mines to be competitive in the current destroyed coal marketplace,” Murray spokesman Gary Broadbent said. Broadbent said the Marshall County Mine now employs about 900 workers, with the Ohio County Mine employing approximately 600. The Monongalia County Mine employs 400, with 600 working at the Marion County Mine and 550 employed at the Harrison County Mine. Murray Energy officials believe the coal marketplace faces an extremely challenging environment in 2016 and beyond. Federal regulations that threaten the future of coal mining and burning include the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan and Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement’s Stream Protection Rule, which Murray believes will make underground coal mining using a longwall machine impossible. MSHA data show Murray’s local mines - including the Century Mine near Beallsville and the Powhatan No. 6 Mine, in addition to the Ohio County and Marshall County mines - saw some changes in production levels from 2013 to 2014. Under Consol ownership for nearly all of 2013, the Ohio and Marshall County mines yielded about 15 tons worth of coal, but these amounts grew to nearly 17 tons in 2014 under Murray. 54
However, MSHA numbers also show an increase in injuries for miners at the Ohio and Marshall County mines from 2013 to 2014. The number of reported injuries from the two mines combined in 2013 was 43, including one fatality. Although there were no fatalities at these two mines in 2014, the total number of injuries jumped to 78. Incomplete data from 2015 show all local mines with declines in production from 2014, however, as Murray laid off 754 miners among the four Upper Ohio Valley mines, including two in East Ohio, earlier this year. Murray also finds itself at odds both with MSHA and the United Mine Workers of America. According to MSHA, inspectors issued 29 safety citations at the West Virginia mines from March 12, 2014, to April 9, 2014, due to responding to the confidential complaints from UMWA members. These violations included the accumulation of coal dust along conveyor belts, inoperative escapes, an inadequately supported roof, flammable concentrations of methane near a seal, inoperative emergency communication systems and inadequate ventilation. An administrative law judge also ruled Murray interfered with UMWA members’ right to issue confidential complaints, resulting in a $150,000 fine. Still, Broadbent said the safety of miners remains the company’s top priority. “These mines will only be productive and competitive if they continue to prioritize safety, above all else,” Broadbent added.
