Virtual Special General Meeting (SGM) 24 September 2022

The Virtual Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Singapore Cricket Club was conducted on 24 September 2022 virtually in the Club, due to COVID-19 safe management restrictions. Chairman Zoher Saleh Motiwalla called the meeting to order at 11am and voting was opened shortly after – this year, Members voted electronically while a small number of Members visited the Club to receive assistance with online registration and voting, while still adhering to safe distancing measures. SGM was adjourned in the afternoon at 12.30pm. It resumed at 6.45pm in the evening and ended in the evening at 7.21pm when Chairman closed the meeting. ANNUAL STAFF FUND Members are hereby invited to voluntarily contribute to the SCC Staff “Annual Ang Pow Fund 2022”. It is an SCC tradition that this contribution amounts to the equivalent of one month’s subscription and the fund will be fully dispersed in the month January 2023 as an ex-gratia payment that is equally distributed amongst all members of staff. This is the only occasion in the year when Members may show their appreciation to the Club’s employees in this manner. In keeping with recent practice, the amount will be debited to Members’ Accounts and will be reflected in the November 2022 Statement of Account and will be deducted via GIRO on 21 December 2022. This contribution as previously stated is wholly voluntary and members may give written notice prior to 21 December 2022 should they choose to make a smaller, larger or no contribution at all. JEYA AYADURAI

After graduating from the University of Leeds, UK, with a degree in International History and Politics, Jeya Ayadurai became a lecturer in Military History and International Relations at the former Department of Strategic Studies at the Singapore Command & Staff College (now known as the Goh Keng Swee Command and Staff College) for six years. In 1994, Jeya left his secure career in academia to pursue his dream of setting up his own history consultancy firm - Singapore History Consultants (SHC) is today one of Singapore’s premier research and consultancy house; over the years he has also helped establish four other companies that play a significant role in heritage and tourism in Singapore, including Journeys Pte Ltd, The Changi Museum Pte Ltd, The Heritage Box and Haw Par Villa Pte Ltd. In addition to developing SHC educational programmes, Jeya also has vast experience in research and consultancy work, having led SHC research teams on many high-profile national projects including the Mandai Rainforest Safari Park, Chinatown Enhancement Project and the Historical Study of Labrador Park where the team discovered underground chambers and tunnels. Over the years, Jeya has been a nominee and recipient of several national awards, including the ‘Special Recognition Award’ by the Singapore Tourism Board, which was awarded for his contributions to museum management, heritage and tourism. He was on the Board of Governors for the Army Museum of Singapore and a member on the United Nations Education Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO) sub-commission on heritage. In June 2022, Jeya was made an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

What ignited your interest in history? It was an act of my dad who bought a whole series of books including an encyclopedia of two volumes on world history when I was nine years old. He opened the world of reading and access to amazing knowledge that allowed one to understand our social environment. That encyclopedia took me to different places and times. For a child of nine, it was the joy and wonder of being on a journey of discovery. I still have and treasure the two volumes on world history.

Why should we study military history and preserve war remembrance for modern society? For some, the blood and gore of war is repulsive and to focus on its teaching and war remembrance is tantamount to glorifying the evils of war. While I understand the pain and horror of war, I’ve always seen conflict as part of the human DNA and that man has lived with war since the start of history. As long as man exists, it will always be a subject matter that will be relevant for study.

We sometimes fail to appreciate our heritage, simply because that knowledge has not been made available, either because no one is sharing that history or that it is being done in an unexciting manner. Understanding and appreciating our history provides us with a gravitas and a cultural ballast that would steady our ship even in the worst of storms. It makes us more complete as individuals and thus, better citizens. It is one of the reasons why my team at Singapore History Consultants and Journeys focuses on bringing back to life and helping to preserve the few heritage sites that remain in Singapore, such as the Battlebox and Haw Par Villa. They are cultural assets that our nation cannot afford to lose.

How is the gazetting of the Padang important for Singapore and how do you think the Singapore Cricket Club can honour that? The Padang has been around since the birth of modern Singapore, that is from the time of Raffles. The city grew around it and as we became independent, it was the central focus of our National Day. Thus, the Padang witnessed the worst and best days of Singapore’s history - from the fall of Singapore, to the Japanese surrender, to riots and transfers of political leadership.

The benefit of being a military historian is to teach military professionals how to conclude a military campaign with speed, efficiency and the least loss of life that is possible, both for your side and the enemy. The lack of “Understanding and knowledge and strategy in war leads to untold violence. The absence of strategy appreciating our history and its resultant butchery by the Russians is what we are witnessing in Ukraine. So provides us with a gravitas the teaching of military history has its utility. The part of war that I am fascinated by is the incredible courage and sacrifice that is displayed by ordinary men and women. The nobility of the human spirit on display by these individuals inspires me. Remembering them and their sacrifice thus becomes an obligation. The war commemorations and remembrance ceremonies are one way of educating future generations to look beyond their own petty needs and to follow a higher example. An appreciation of the sacrifice helps make us better people.

Why is it important that we and future generations know about Singapore’s heritage and history? Singapore has an amazing story to tell. One as compelling as many other nations. The people who don’t seem to realise that are essentially Singaporeans themselves. As a student of Turkish history, I once recall the story of a Grand Vizier in the 19th Century, who complained to the Sultan that the people saw the moon with the eyes of a cow, while in the rest of Europe, people were doing scientific studies and examining the moon from many different perspectives. He was complaining that while Europe was industrialising and progressing, the Ottoman Turks were still stuck in more primitive times. I sometimes feel that our people, including those who should know better, view our heritage in similar fashion that the Grand Vizier complained about - with the eyes of a cow. As heritage consultants, one of our more important tasks is to provide knowledge that

Those who have driven or walked past Connaught Drive or St Andrew’s Road would frequently watch the games played on it. The Padang is the very reason for the Club’s presence in this historic part of Singapore. As John Turnbull Thomson’s painting shows, cricket was already being played on it by 1851, leading to the establishment of the Club on this site in 1852. SCC honours the gazetting by continuing what we have always been doing since 1852, by having a presence and continuing our sports on this historic field. Just as our existence here was because of the Padang, we are as much for the reasons why the Padang still exists today - we will maintain the spirit and rationale for its use.

The clubs on the Padang played an important role, not only in the social life of the city, but made significant contributions to the development of sports in the nation. We should continue doing so. But beyond sports, we recognise the Padang in terms of the monuments that sit on its perimeter. We restarted the process of reviving the use of the Cenotaph for commemoration ceremonies on Remembrance Day (11 November). I recall when the Club first asked the National Parks permission to do the ceremony at the Cenotaph, and was rebuked for trying to hold an activity on a gazetted national monument. We had to enlighten the official that the very purpose of the Cenotaph was for remembrance services. By holding these services every year, we honour the sacrifices made by the armed forces and educate the young on the purpose of these monuments.

How did you feel when you were made an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)? I am honoured and humbled by this award by the Queen on her platinum jubilee. For me, the award bestows recognition on my colleagues and the firm’s 27 years of hard work and contributions to Singapore heritage. Awards are generally given to achievements in economic development, science and technology. This award gives us hope that fields such as history and heritage are also valued. I hope that it will spur other heritage entrepreneurs and specialists to continue focusing on local history. It may potentially make it easier for local heritage advocates to seek much-needed support for the meaningful work that’s done here. With the conferment of the award, I have been gratified to see so many people come out of the woodwork, to congratulate my team and I. In the demanding world of heritage, one sometimes feels alone in the wilderness - this award shines a beam of light on the work we do and helps others realise that we are not alone. It is evidence that there are people who are appreciative of the work the heritage community undertakes. I hope it empowers and motivates others in the field.

Hong Kong to Singapore: Relocation Considerations

When relocating to any new country, there are many things to consider. Some are generic to almost all moves - will this sofa fit? - and others are more specific to individual routes. Here, we will look at two vital considerations for those recently moving slightly west, from Hong Kong to Singapore.

LONG TERM SAVING As the name suggests, all full-time employees in Hong Kong are required to contribute to the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) as a retirement provision. However, if you plan on leaving Hong Kong without the intention of resettling as a permanent resident, it is possible to withdraw the accrued benefits as a lump sum. If resident in Singapore, this one-time lump sum would be tax-free. Within an MPF, the investment options are limited. When contributing to the scheme, this is of limited concern. After all, there is no choice. However, once free from the requirement (or allowance), very few retirement goals will be well served by the very low-risk offerings of the scheme, particularly in the current climate of high inflation. As such, it is likely advisable to consider alternative strategies.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES? Once out of the MPF structure, there is freedom, although with this come pitfalls. It is important to remember that these funds make up part of your retirement plans, so before considering anything unrelated to your retirement, it is necessary to consider these funds. Similarly, having left a relatively restrictive scheme, it is likely wise to avoid returning to similar confinement, for example, a contractual investment product. Seek well-diversified portfolios that you can hold within a flexible and tax-efficient structure. The aim should generally be to seek protection against inflation whilst maintaining tax-planning options for the future.

LIFE INSURANCE It is not uncommon to encounter individuals and families who believe that life insurance is a one-time consideration - once you have it, you are sorted. However, this is a potentially costly misconception. As people’s lives change and grow, so will their need for different types and levels of coverage. Every person with loved ones who would be affected financially should consider life insurance should they be unable to continue their career, become disabled, contract a critical illness, or pass away. It is a way to shift the financial risk of such unpleasant events from you to a third party, thereby gaining much-needed protection and peace of mind. Relocating offers a clear-cut opportunity to take stock and consider whether current levels of coverage are sufficient and whether your new contract provides adequate coverage for your circumstances. Although Hong Kong has an active and mature life insurance market, providers in Singapore regularly beat Hong Kong policies for both price and coverage, even considering the increased age of applicants. As such, it’s well worth reviewing your situation and considering the options to ascertain if there is a better deal available to you in Singapore.

Beneficiaries include the elderly, the disabled, low income families, children from single parent families or otherwise poverty stricken families, and migrant workers in Singapore.

Back after two years, the 2022 SCC Night Race held from 30 September to 2 October 2022 was an adrenaline-pumping weekend filled with loads of fun and adrenaline-pumping excitement not the slightest bit dampened by rain!

Members and guests converged on the Clubhouse to watch the racing action on the Marina Bay Street Circuit – both besides the track itself and on big screens placed around the Club so Members and guests could catch all the highlights of the 2022 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix. The weekend was filled with food, drinks, and entertainment – from extensive buffet spreads to fun fringe activities such as the roving LED Stilt Walker, magician, and LED spinner. Members and guests also tried their hand at being a race driver in the race car stimulator, cheered on by our SCC Lion mascot who also hung out with the crowd. A SPECIALLY CURATED WALKING TOUR TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MR. LEE KUAN YEW Saturday, 6 August 2022 Members learnt about Mr. Lee’s personal life as a young man, husband, father and friend in this special tour. First stopping at the Civilian War Memorial, they then headed east to learn more about Mr. Lee’s childhood years. The tour also visited Oxley Road, the Lee residence for 50 years, then dropped by Tanjong Pagar, the constituency of the late Prime Minister. The tour wrapped up with a final stop at the Old Parliament House before our members walked back to SCC.

20th ANNIVERSARY

SCC BALI MEMORIAL SERVICE This year was the 20th anniversary of the Bali bombings which killed 202 people, including eight members of the SCC Rugby Section: Charlie Vanrenen, Chris Bradford, Chris Kays, Chris Redman, David Kent, Neil Bowler, Peter Record and Tim Arnold. At sunrise on 12 October 2022, Rugby Section Members past and present, other Club Members, Members of the General Committee, and attendees from other clubs around the region, gathered on the Padang to remember their lost friends and teammates. Section Convenor Jack Whiskin, Club Captain Murray Wylie and Saptak Santra spoke at the memorial service. Below is the speech that Saptak, who was part of the Bali touring team in 2022, has kindly shared for our reproduction:

I’m honoured this morning to be given the opportunity to say a few words about the players we lost in Bali. The last time I occupied this spot I believe was the 10th anniversary. Many of the Club today never knew the guys that we lost on that tour. I hope in the few moments I have been given to shed some light into them, perhaps in a less sombre way than is traditional, to show that they were guys just like you – people who enjoyed their rugby and the bonding that goes with it, but who were senselessly taken from us before their time. Looking around us today we see death and destruction abounding on the news. In many ways we have become desensitized to it all – which is a very callous way of looking at it. We only stop becoming desensitized when we have a personal connection to it – when it hits closer to home. And for us, on the 12th October 2002, that’s exactly what it did. The Bali 10s was an established tournament on the Asian rugby circuit, arguably one of the most popular and fiercely contested. It was a particular favourite of mine, having been my “virgin tour” when I had first joined the Club in 2000, and been baptized into the traditions of SCC rugby touring. All the teams stayed in one hotel, on the beach and with the pitch just a 5min walk away – separated, both conveniently and dangerously, by the hotel pool and bar. The lack of logistics alone meant this was one of the best tours on the calendar. Such was its popularity that the Singapore Rugby Union always kept this a free weekend in the season’s calendar – as the SCC, Bedok Kings, Bucks and Wanderers all competed in it. The tournament started much like any other tour: arrival in the team tent at an ungodly hour on a Saturday morning under the beating hot sun, following a strategic team bonding session the night before, only to see the day’s entire supply of 100plus cans demolished in a matter of seconds. Yet as the sun grew stronger, so did we. The SCC was already undefeated well past the midway point of the 2002 season and in the Bali 10s we were in imperious form, winning every game and not having leaked a single try in defence. As we finished our last game, we were top of our group, having dispatched many of the other tournament favourites. Being one of the larger and slower members on tour, myself together with fellow prop Neil Bowler and Chris Bradford, were the last to leave the pitch bound for the hotel. Our sloth came to haunt us when the figure of Pete “Pot” Taylor of Wanderers RFC strategically blocked our exit route and ordered us back onto the pitch – as certain Wanderers players had gone MIA and they were in need of players to “guest” for them. It speaks much to the camaraderie amongst the clubs at the time that an SCC stalwart like Chris Bradford was to play his last game of rugby in a Wanderers jersey. At the same time, it subsequently helped speed up my own recovery from the injuries I was to sustain – I certainly didn’t want my last game of rugby to have been in a Wanderers jersey!

We were all in great spirits that night as we finished dinner and went for some well-deserved refreshment. We were in great form and there was a real sense of belief that we could win the tournament. The history books record the events that happened that night. Events that would shake our club to the core and result in the 2002 season being suspended. Yet the spirit of a rugby club can still be found in some dark humour that followed those terrible events. I recall arriving in the hospital and being tracked down by Douglas “DB” Van der Wiel. I had a piece of metal pipe in my arm which needed to be removed but the hospital had run out of anesthetic. The medical staff had to resort to using vodka that some people were bringing in from nearby establishments and the doctor was passed a bottle to start disinfecting the wound. I remember DB standing behind me saying, “Don’t use that, he’ll drink it”. Neil Bowler, Chris Kays and Charlie Vanrenen were all new to the SCC that season and were formidable rugby players who had greatly strengthened our playing depth. Such was the strength of the touring squad that Peter Record and Tim Arnold were the only two tourists who weren’t in the 1st XV that season. Peter had just joined us from the Hong Kong Football Club. He would go on to become a great friend and close team-mate on the numerous social matches we would play against visiting naval ships in the off-season. Tim, who was the senior statesman of the Club who played before the advent of a vets team, was somewhat of a father figure to the younger players. In a cruel twist of fate, after he passed away that night, he would never learn that his girlfriend subsequently found out she was pregnant. Chris Redman was a good friend and former British Army officer who had recently suffered a horrendous knee injury which had kept him from playing rugby prior to the tour. His wife was under the mistaken impression that that meant he wouldn’t be going on tour, but not to be undone, as only he could, he appointed himself tour manager and team cameraman just so he wouldn’t be left out. Many of the pictures of that tour that exist today, were taken by him. Chris Bradford and Dave Kent were, and still are, legends of this Club. I arrived in Singapore naively assuming that I had retired from playing rugby – but after a long night with Chris, he seemed to have detailed knowledge of a fictitious conversation where I had agreed to play again. Chris was the captain of the SCC 1st XV, an uncompromising wing forward and an even better captain to play under - in three seasons of playing rugby with him as skipper, we had only lost two games. Dave Kent was almost a legend in his own lifetime and a truly larger than life character. He was from the North of England yet had honed his skills in Australia, playing for Randwick alongside Australian World-Cup winners such as David Campese and Nick Farr-Jones. Dave’s colorful language was often heard on the touchlines, with his unique style of critiquing questionable refereeing decisions with almost every expletive in the English language…. and a few that weren’t. These were guys who you could imagine conversing with over a beer after a hard day’s rugby talking through the usual post-match analysis we all do. It could have been any of us in their company. But on 12 October 2002, it was me. And for some reason I can never fathom, that conversation, like the lives on that table, was cut short. And whilst today will always be a day of sadness where we reflect on those that were lost, I’d like to think they left this world doing what they enjoyed most – being in the company of their mates with beer in hand as part of this great Rugby Club. And whilst bitterly sad and mournful of their loss from that senseless tragedy, I also count myself as privileged to have known and played with them. One day, the conversation that was cut short that night will continue again and, no doubt knowing Kenty and Bradford, I’ll be fined for being late! I can’t finish without mentioning two other friends and former teammates – Ariel Youknovsky and Shaun Keating, who both volunteered for the awful job of visiting the mortuaries of Bali to inspect the remains of the fatalities to help identify our lost team members. A truly harrowing and awful job that they took it upon themselves to do. Today is a reminder that everything we hold dear can be gone in the blink of an eye. I’d like to leave you with an abridged extract from the Rugby Section article that I wrote in the Padang Magazine. The article was written approximately three months after the bombing, and was the first thing I wrote when the burns on my hands had healed enough for me to type. “As SCC rugby players, we all have a responsibility to honour our lost teammates. Not just for their memory but for what they stood for – the bond of friendship and camaraderie that exists only in Rugby Union Football and especially in this great Club. We have played together, drank together, toured together but sadly, today, we grieve together. We honour them every time we pull on that black and gold jersey, every time we run onto the field and every time we are together as a Section. Chris Kays, Tim Arnold, Neil Bowler, Chris Bradford, Dave Kent, Peter Record, Chris Redman, Charlie Vanrenen. To live in the hearts of those who carry your memory is not to die. Sleep in peace, boys.”

CHINESE SWIMMING CLUB NATIONAL DAY SNOOKER EVENT We wish to thank Chinese Swimming Club for inviting us to their annual social event on7 August which we have been a part of for the last few years. It was great to see old friends again after a two-year COVID-19 break.

OSMAN RETIREMENT AWARD CEREMONY The Club organised a small award ceremony for the retirement of our marker Osman (Mr Sabidullah Bin Osman) after 29 years of dedicated service to the Club. It was held at the Men’s Bar and a plaque was presented by our Club President Zoher Motiwalla. We thank him for his dedication and services and wish him all the best for the next stage of his life.

LAKE CLUB MALAYSIA DAY INTER-PORT SNOOKER TOURNAMENT IN KUALA LUMPUR Our team of Jason Teo, Matthew Lim, Clive Cheong and Victor Yeong made it up to KL to represent us in this 12-team event. It featured 2 singles and 1 doubles in this 6 red event. Congrats to the team for being runners up in the plate event.

VICTOR YEONG WILL BE TAKING OVER AS SCC CAPTAIN UNTIL THE NEXT AGM IN 2023 We welcome Victor back to the Committee and he has full support of the Section as he takes on the duty as Captain of the Section. SCC CAPTAIN TAN BAK CHOON IS RECOVERING WELL Our beloved Captain, Bak Choon, unfortunately suffered a stroke shortly after we returned from Bangkok after the inter-port with RBSC end July. After spending six weeks in hospital, we are happy to update everyone that he is now in a nursing home at Villa Francis in Yishun.

MONTHLY SECTION GAMES There was no section game in August owing to the extended closure of the Gilmour Room so when we held the Saturday afternoon game on 17 September, the response was overwhelming. We had 30 Members and 6 guests who were all in for a pleasant surprise when they turned up; instead of the Gilmour Room, we were given the Padang Restaurant for the afternoon.

Results for September : • Champion: Fatema Sadiq with 641 points • Runner Up: Vashi Sajnani with 633 points • Lowest score: Huned Hassanbhai with 455 points Fatema was given a special limited edition Chivas Regal whisky bottle courtesy of Rajan Menon who kindly donated it. For everyone’s information, prizes are given only to Members whose scores are recorded officially. October’s game was a midweek night on Tuesday, 4 October. A total of 34 members and guests attended including new Section Members Jan and Molly Singh and Rajan Alwani.

This is what makes Balut fun and interesting as nothing is certain and your scores can change with each game.

INTERCLUB BALUT TOURNAMENT 2022 Round 3 was held at NUSS on 17 August. Our Team 2 did well in this round coming in second place with a mere 17 points below the winners Khalsa Team 1. Our players who did well in this round are: • Yasmin Gaffoor with 642 points • Roland Pereira with 626 points • Ben Cunico with 624 points For Round 4 held at The Tanglin Club on 14 September, we again emerged champions with Team 4 comprising of Renee, Philip, Foo Yong and Jasmine taking top spot having scored 2,455 points - a commanding lead of 77 points over the second place winner NUSS Team 2 with 2,378 points. Our players who did well in this round are: • Yeoh Foo Yong with 656 points • Philip Ng with 622 points • Vashi Sajnani with 621 points

After four rounds, it is looking to be a one-horse race with the following standings : • Khalsa Association Team 1 with 9,400 points • NUSS Team 2 with 9,242 points • SCC Team 2 with 9,232 points • NUSS Team 1 with 9,206 points • SCC Team 1 with 9,205 points Khalsa Team 1 has a big margin of 158 points from the next highest score which is around 40 points per player for the next highest scoring teams to beat them. If Khalsa Team 1 maintains this lead in Round 5 hosted by us on 19 October, the trophy is as good as theirs and the final round hosted by Khalsa Association on 9 November will not change anything.

POT GAMES 2022

Interclub Round 4 champions.

It was our turn to host this annual competition with Tanglin Club (TC). On Saturday, 8 October, 18 players from each Club met for an afternoon of fun and friendship that masked the seriousness of this annual competition. Having lost to Tanglin Club in the first game played earlier in the year, we were determined to wrestle the trophy back from them and our determination paid off. Results : • SCC: 13,745 points • TC: 13,430 points It was a close fight with SCC starting off well in Round 1 but TC managed to pick up and gained the upper hand in Rounds 2 and 3 with a small margin. TC kept the momentum with a well-won Round 4 and upped their lead to 111 points. SCC fought back hard and took Rounds 5 and 6. Up to the final two rounds, it could have gone either way but SCC managed to score well in these rounds and ultimately won with a margin of 315 points. TWELVE CLUBS AND ELEVEN GAMES - SCC A CLINCHED THE SILVER Huge congratulations to the Bowls Section Committee, Organizing Committee and Section Bowlers on the turnout in numbers and friendly competition on the greens. Team SCC A emerged the silver medalists after battling eleven other teams from SCC, Tanglin Club, Evergreen and Lion City Lawn Bowling clubs. Heartening to witness on the green was the wonderful display of skills steely nerves, strategy and strength of character from the newcomers - upstaging seasoned national and experienced teams. Topping up with a great Finale on Wednesday, 31 August 2022, cheers and camaraderie were evidently enjoyed by all the participating teams and all were engaging in free flowing spirits and spirit (pun intended!). Yes, we at SCC are always willing, able and ready to stage more of such meaningful events and intriguing tournaments!

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH INTER-CLUB MIXED-TRIPLES SILVER MEDALIST: KELVYNA How did you persevere through the many rounds of the Interclub Triples tournament, and bowling with as well as against very seasoned national bowlers? It was a team effort actually. As Bowls is a sport which requires mental strength, I reminded myself to focus on my line and weight. As a relatively young player (both in terms of my experience as a bowler and in terms of my age), I do not have the pressure of playing with and against the seasoned national bowlers. In fact, I take it as an opportunity to learn from the greatest players in Singapore

What were the most memorable moments? Even though our team was down by about 9 points, we did not lose heart. There was no finger-pointing nor any criticism against anyone. On the contrary, we encouraged one another, focused on our game, and worked as a team.

What do you enjoy about bowls? Well, first and foremost, the community! Even though I’m relatively new to the Bowls family, everyone is warm and welcoming, giving me advice on how to play well, the different game strategies, and how to perfect my delivery. Although it is a competitive sport, the Members are willing to share their experiences and techniques with me, and I really appreciate that! Secondly, I enjoy the mental aspect of the game - how we need to think of the right line and the right weight before releasing each bowl. Also, we need to keep a positive mindset and persevere, despite being down by many points.

Any bowling philosophy? As the “new kid on the block”, I try not to be intimidated by players who are older and have much more game experience than me. In addition, I remind myself not to be stressed out by the audience who is watching the game, or even myself, as it will have a negative impact on my performance. As a Christian, I play for “the audience of One” (God). As I have just embarked on this journey, I have to remain humble and not let my pride get ahead of me, so that I

could continue learning and growing, both as a person and as a sportsperson. Rosemary always tells me to “think of the line, the weight; stay low, go slow, and let it go.”

Any advice for newcomers? Love the game for what it is. Don't let "winning" (medals, titles) become your sole purpose. Enjoy the camaraderie among the Members and have loads of fun along the way!

FROM RUGGED AND RUMBLE RUGBY PLAYER TO SMOOTH AND SUAVE LAWN BOWLS CHAMPION - WHAT’S THE SECRET TO BRYAN LIM’S SUCCESS? How did you persevere through rounds of both the National Interclub Triples tournament.

For the National trips, it was my first time playing back-to-back games, which lasted for at least two hours, with close to an hour of break in between on both the Saturday and Sunday. The sun was scorching hot too on both days. However, we made sure the team was well hydrated with isotonic drinks or coconut water, not forgetting a big packet of Hariboo for Aman and myself after our turns. There were no breaks for our skip and captain Edmund. For the Interclub Triples, I think Edmund rotated the team (Josephine, Kelvinya, Hui kai and myself) well over the 12 weeks as everyone of us played the same number of games and there was always sufficient cover whenever one of us was unavailable to play. We didn’t put any pressure on ourselves and our aim was to have fun while trying to win. Eventually, we missed out the title narrowly and came in second.

What’s your personal strategy (as a younger and more junior player (in terms of years) bowling with as well as against very seasoned national bowlers? For the Nationals Triples, Aman and I were bowling with Edmund who was the skip. He was always giving us good advice throughout the game. As a second, it was easy to just listen and try to execute the shot the skip wants. Even when we bowled bad bowls, he would encourage us to do better and at the same time come up with a clutch shot to bail us out. That made us pretty relaxed throughout the tournament. In all our matches, I was up against a seasoned national bowler most of the time which was great for me as I took the opportunity to learn and at the same time try to cause an upset by beating their bowls. Also, I guess knowing that I am still relatively new to the game eased a lot of pressure off myself In the Club Triples, Hui Kai and Josephine were very helpful towards Kelvnya and myself. They were very encouraging and made the game very lighthearted throughout. We were laughing most of the time especially at our mistakes, funny how we managed to emerge second.

What were the most memorable moments Definitely winning the National Triples as I really didn’t expect to win when we first entered the competition and even so when we lost our first couple of matches. To be honest it took a while for the feeling to sink in, but I think I was probably suffering very bad side effects from one of the club member's Declan Marten's Stag that weekend. Also, the moment we actually lost the league to ELBC as the title came down to the final shot against them in the last end in our

game against them. I think the score was 16-15 to us and we were holding at least one in the final shot. May took the jack and got two or three bowls in the end to win the game. Heartbreaking but fun nevertheless.

What do you enjoy about bowls? Good Question. I like that it is competitive and at the same time not very physically exhausting especially since I have played Rugby most of my life. I also do get a sense of joy whenever I manage to sneak in a good shot which happens very occasionally. It is also a great social sport where you can play with literally anyone, have a couple of Gin & Soda and a curry puff during the game, dish out wisecracks (only to your friends) and head up to Stumps right after for a few more.

Any bowling philosophy? I think just one which is a philosophy I applied a lot during my time playing rugby: it is about staying in a "blue head" where one is calm, in the moment, accurate and, focused especially during high pressure situation. Learned this from one of the best rugby teams in the world, the All Blacks.

Advice for newcomers? I am still new so I think I should be the one seeking advice. Well perhaps to give yourself a year or two to master the game. Get a few mates/kakis and keep playing regularly. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice from the senior players as we are fortunately enough to have plenty of players who have represented Singapore, such as Rosemary - our coach and mentor, Mary our Section captain, Amira and Shermeen - our Commonwealth Games National players, to name a few. And if you are entering a competition, find skip with strong shoulders to carry you through all the way, and this way you’re scaffolded by them and they can teach you well. Cheers to Lawn Bowls!!

Chess has long been a hobby of many SCC Members and a Chess Interest Group had been established by now-Chess Section Committee Members Bryan Woon and Tristan Tan in 2021. So a SCC Chess Section seemed long overdue by the time that the SCC’s newest section held its first AGM on 13 August. The Section has started a regular session of friendly matches every Sunday between 3pm and 6pm and looks forward to welcoming anyone with an interest in chess, at any level of proficiency, to join us.

POT GAMES The first post-AGM Chess Section major event was the POT Games against Tanglin Club on 25 September. The SCC’s handpicked team of ten players put up a valiant fight across the board. Tanglin Club’s team had the better of the play on the day however and took the win. Undaunted by this tough first outing, the SCC Chess team is planning further friendly intra-club games against other Singapore chess clubs with a view to providing opportunities to learn and develop through competitive play. The Chess Section is especially keen to support and develop young players. To this end, the Section is also planning to arrange training to complement its regular schedule of friendly games with tuition to hone the skills of the Club’s chess players. Lastly, the Chess Section Committee would like to thank Mohietheen Fathima, Chairlady of Member Engagement Subcommittee (General Committee), Wan Lay Chi, Head of Events & Sponsorship and Bianca Gatchalian, Events Executive, for the effort they have put into assisting the Chess Section in getting up and running. We would especially like to recognize Lay Chi and Bianca’s help in organizing the POT Games against Tanglin Club. We look forward to seeing our fellow SCC Members over a board soon!

DARTS COMPETES AT POT GAMES The Section fielded a strong team for the POT Games on 8 October, which was hosted by the Club to compete against the Tanglin Club. A contingent of darters were drawn from among the Section and the Club Members. To sharpen their skills, practice games were scheduled by Captain Charles Shanmugaraj, and with the Section Committee’s approval, a professional coach was engaged to provide training during the practice sessions.

It was a tense game, with our team leading at one point 4-2. Tanglin Club made a strong comeback and by the 8th game, the Clubs were tied 4-4. It was then down to the last game, a mixed doubles featuring the two Clubs’ Captains. Our Captain Charles really stepped up to the plate, and he coolly made a double 3 to seal the victory for SCC. We thank our guests from the Tanglin Club for joining us for a great evening of fellowship and sportsmanship.

SOCIAL GAMES & EVENTS We had a fun-filled social game on 12 August 2022 at the Marina Bay Golf Club. It was heartening to see so many new Members participating on the golf course and then tucking into a sumptuous dinner at Quentin’s The Eurasian restaurant. The night was jazzed up with catchy sing-along live music and SCC Golf Section-style merrymaking. On 22 September, we enjoyed another Members’ Evening at the Gilmour Room where many Members caught up with one another for a night of top line food, drinks and music by Terry & Robin. Needless to say everyone had a blast!

POT GAMES The POT Games (Golf Competition) hosted by SCC against the Tanglin Club, which included four social flights for our noncompeting Members, was played at the serene Seletar Country Club on 28 September 2022. We were blessed with excellent weather and course conditions, and I am proud to announce that SCC beat the Tanglin Club with a resounding score of 7 ½ : 2 ½. Well done indeed!

INTERPORT TOUR TO MALAYSIA: 8 - 11 SEPTEMBER 2022 Some of the players did an optional extra round at the Tropicana Golf & Country Resort on Thursday, while others just relaxed at the Grand Dorsett Hotel. Dinner took place at Brazilian restaurant Carnaval, owned by Golf Section Member David Gabriel. On Friday, the full group headed to the Rahman Putra Golf Club for a friendly match with the Royal Selangor Club (RSC), playing 18 holes at the Lakes course – aptly named given the prevalence of water hazards. RSC won with 379 points to SCC’s 345. RSC hosted drinks and dinner and gifted each player with golf balls, as is their custom given how many people might lose theirs in the water on the course. Many thanks to Golf Convenor Ganesan, Dato Haris Sangha and all our friends at RSC!

Squash

BANGKOK TOUR: 6 – 7 AUGUST After a long hiatus, the Squash Section went on their first overseas tour to Bangkok. The tour was organised by Timothy Soh and Sarat Chandran, and a total of nine players represented SCC. We played against The Royal Bangkok Sports Club and The British Club Bangkok. Both clubs were great hosts and the players really enjoyed the camaraderie and the hospitality offered by the clubs. SCC managed to win the tie against RBSC but was unable to match their feat against the British Club. All the matches were very well contested and the results were quite close. Quite a few of our players also enjoyed playing at the Jumbo doubles courts at RBSC. We have extended an invite to both the clubs to visit SCC and we look forward to welcoming them in the near future.

AMERICAN CLUB FRIENDLY: 27 AUGUST The American Club hosted SCC for the Annual friendly, The Padang Cup, on 27 August and we played a total of 17 matches. This was one of the longest line-up of players we have ever had for a friendly and all the matches were very well contested. While SCC managed to win 11-6 in the end, a lot of matches could have gone either way and the end result would have been much closer. After the matches, the players feasted on some amazing food and we look forward to hosting our friends in 2023. The highlight was that for the first time we had juniors from both clubs participating in the friendly. As American Club also has a good pool of juniors, it would be good to see more friendlies between us going forward. American Club is planning to go on a tour to Perth in February and has extended an invite to SCC players to join them for it. The Section Committee will be reaching out to Members in due course to gather interest.

END OF LEAGUE PARTY: 3 SEPTEMBER As has been tradition, the Section Committee organised the End of League Party for all players who had represented the Club in the recently concluded National Squash League. The event was attended by close to 50 members including 20 JSMs. The dinner is a chance for players to gather and celebrate their results in the National Squash League with their teammates. SCC fielded a team of 105 players across grades in the National Squash League. In the premier grade, Team 2 was the 2nd runner up. The Division 1 team was also runner up, losing to New Pioneers in the final by 2 points! Grade D team was also runner up in their Division and Grade E team was 2nd runner up. In the mixed event, the team was also 2nd runner up. This was an excellent performance by the teams and we hope to improve on this in the coming year.

At the recently concluded Squash Ball - an event organized by the Singapore Squash Rackets Association to celebrate the 50th anniversary of SSRA and the achievements of Singapore Squash - our JSMs Simmy Ong and Justin Yap were named as SG Squash Junior Athletes of the year in their respective categories and were even featured in the Straits Times. The Section Committee decided to present both of them $100 F&B vouchers for their achievement.

SQUASH INTERSECTION: 17 SEPTEMBER The Squash Section hosted its InterSection tournament at the Padel courts at Marina Square. The event was well attended and we had players from Tennis, Netball, Cricket and Squash participating in this inaugural tournament. Robbie Lyons was the chief organiser of this event and it was great to see so many players participate in this event.

SPORTCARES INITIATIVE The Squash Section has partnered with SportCares Singapore to initiate a squash program as part of their wider sports offering. SportCares was established in 2012 as the philanthropic arm of Sport Singapore to enable vulnerable individuals and persons with disabilities to experience and reap the benefits of sport by instilling confidence and elevating one’s outlook to life. SportCares has selected 12 young people to participate in a 3-month pilot programme. The programme is designed to give these youth an introduction to Squash but more importantly, to engage them through fun, positive and healthy activities with a key focus on personal development. This program is a brain child of our Mens captain Robbie Lyons and he is being helped by our committee member, Reuben Tay, who is running this 12-week clinic. The Section organised a fund raiser and we managed to collect extra funds and equipment that will help us run this program for a few weeks longer than the 12 weeks we originally planned for. We are thankful to all our Members who contributed so generously to this initiative.

HOCKEY SECTION CELEBRATES THE LAUNCH OF THE HOCKEY SCCHOOL The Hockey Section celebrated the official launch of the Hockey SCChool on 6 September this year. Though it had initially threatened to rain, it turned out to be a lovely day. The honourable Minister of Community, Culture and Youth, Mr. Edwin Tong, was aptly invited as the guest of honour along with Sport Singapore (SportSG) CEO Mr Lim Teck Yin and the President of the Singapore Hockey Federation Mr Mathavan Devadas who, if you are not aware, is also the Deputy President of the SCC. The Hockey SCChool - founded by Mr Intekhab Khan (former Hockey Convenor), Subhas Nathan (Convenor) and Kanan Packrisamy (Head Coach since 2011) - has grown in numbers and now boasts 58 kids on its roster. Playing mainly at the Padang and at the MOE Co-Curricular Activities Branch pitch at Evans Road, the kids have improved and already won some medals in its short existence. The SCChool won the U10 Mixed Gold and Silver medal at this year’s Vesaki Mela and bagged the Bronze at the mega U12 Mixed Pesta Sukan event. As the minister, Mr. Tong rightfully acknowledged in his speech at the academy’s launch ceremony that getting kids to play is crucial for their holistic well being as they grow and become outstanding members of our society. SportSG CEO Mr. Lim added in his speech that he looks forward to collaborations between the ActiveSG Hockey Academy and the Hockey SCChool soon and praised SCC for investing in academies. The hockey government body President, Mr Mathavan, highlighted how sports makes us all tougher and teaches lessons usually denied to those that do not play, and also shared how he was impressed by the work done behind the scenes by SCC to get the Hockey SCChool launched. It is noteworthy that as part of the event, Mr. Khan, the Managing Partner of the firm M&A Law Corporation, donated S$5,000 each

to SportCares (SportSG’s charity arm) and The Hockey SCChool. Mr. Prakash Mulani, Principal Director of the firm, and Mr. Khan were delighted to present the cheques to Mr. Lim for SportCares and Mr. Nathan for the Hockey SCChool.

BACK ON THE COMPETITION FRONT Following the major relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, the Section has seen a lot of hockey participation. Although failing to defend both our Men’s and Ladies National league titles, the Section has seen improvement in the Men’s 2s and Ladies 2s who finished fourth and fifth in their respective leagues. The Section also saw a large contingent from our ranks participate in the Over 50’s Masters’ World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, and we have one representative in the Over 60’s equivalent in Tokyo. The Section is proud of our Members who have stepped up to participate in a World Cup hockey event. Meanwhile back on the competition front, our Men’s 3rd won the Social Hockey Liga and are well placed for a medal in MHL5. The Men’s and Ladies 1s are competing in the Premier Liga’s and lie sixth and top respectively. The Men however can still finish with the title as there is a Knockout stage and they have qualified for it. The ladies are 6-wins away from defending their Liga title. The Section will say bye to two of their long-standing stalwarts - Chris Jones and Martijn de Blauwe. Both these fine gentlemen were and are Club Men’s Captains and both are heading to the United Kingdom in the latter part of the year. A farewell event will be held before they leave and we wish them the very best and hope they return to our shores one day.

THE SEASON RETURNS – COACHING TEAM

The day after the Memorial Dinner, the Bali Memorial Games returned to Dempsey after a three-year absence to celebrate and remember the ones we lost in Bali twenty years ago.

After last kicking the ball in anger in 2019, the SCC Rugby Section will return to competitive 15-a-side rugby on 29 October as the 2022 – 2023 Singapore Rugby Union National League returns. A lot has changed during this time, including a new-look coaching team assembled to bring silverware to the Section cupboard at all grades this season.

Bright sunshine shone through as the SCC Academy played Tanglin Rugby Club, Centaurs Rugby, and Saints RFC across two age groups. The pure joy of playing the game resonated through Dempsey as games were played in the best of spirits. After preparing the ground suitably, the grizzled Over 50 vets kicked off the North Vs South Challenge with a sizzling display of running rugby in parts, officiated by Mr. Simon Flint, father of Section stalwart Sam Flint. Simon has made this event part of his calendar for several years, and the Section thanks him for coming from the United Kingdom annually. Singapore Rugby Legends from years of yore put on the boots for this special occasion, including some SCC Legends who travelled specifically for this year’s Dawn Memorial Service. The slightly younger and debatably slightly fitter Over 35 Vets were next as SCC hardman Simon Etheredge trekked from the New Zealand hills to lead the South against GCB Chair Sam Sharpe’s North. Some hard hits were on show, as Rugby emerged as the winner. The Under 14 girls from SCC Academy and Tanglin Rugby Club gave a sterling display of 7s rugby as beers were topped up and premium bacon rolls were purchased. The Open North vs South Challenge saw a who’s who of top talent from all clubs in Singapore. A great mix of familiar names and up-and-coming talent was on display, and it was a great display of running rugby with no quarter given in contact. Valu Ratubi rolled back the years as his South team led most of the first half. The North would not be denied, though, and Captain Ross Johnston’s North finished 32 – 27 winners over the South, led admirably by former Tankards Captain Jeremy Bird.

Matt Head will lead the 1st XV coaching team this season, with evergreen Casey Mee assisting from the sidelines in telling the backs where to go. Both Section stalwarts will look to bring home the elusive Premiership title this season, with many promising new players shining in the preseason. Newcomer to the Section Adrian Griffiths will lead the Tankards coaching team this season, pairing up with the youthful-looking multi-talented sportsman Bryan Lim. Adrian has an impressive CV, including representing England U18s and being capped more than 20 times for Hong Kong and has already made an impact with the forwards. The SCC Lions came very close to a title in 2019 and are looking to replicate the magic blend of experience and youthful talent with Jonathan Leow partnering with Patrick Duffy to steer the ship. JL has just realised he had played way beyond his best before the date and is looking forward to the new challenge of leading the Lions coaching team, building on the great work done in 2019 by Brian Lim. With pre-season completed, here’s to a memorable and hopefully successful season.

The weather was perfect all day, and as the sun set, a perfect tribute to those we lost 20 years ago continued to the Gilmour Terrace, where more stories were exchanged. A big thank you goes out to all those who made this day, especially after such a long absence, possible.

ALL IT TOOK WAS 120 YEARS, SCC TOURS KL While it has not taken 120 years for us to tour KL, it has been a while since the Rugby Section embarked on its annual pre-season tour to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was a little special this year as it would be a doubleheader against KL Tigers and our old friends, the Royal Selangor Club (RSC). The RSC historians discovered that it had been 120 years since the first game of rugby was played in Malaysia, between RSC and the SCC. Hence, over 50 tourists took to the road for an extravaganza day of rugby in Malaysia. Rugby was the winner that day, even as the SCC came second best on the scoreline in both games. A strong SCC Black faced the KL Tigers as the SCC Gold Team played against hosts RSC, who had put up a great show pre- and post-game. Unfortunately, it showed that the SCC were playing their first competitive 15s game in three years compared to the home sides, who are just off two seasons of league play. Bagpipers that would have made our resident Scots beam with pride, a biryani meal post-match, and a band for the ages were highlights for sure, as was the eight-hour debrief session on how we can do better for the season ahead. A great start to our first competitive season in three years, and a big thank you to RSC for the hospitality and more games to come.
