For many patients, blood donors are their lifeline. One unit of blood can save three lives! This donation drive is open to all Members, families, and friends too.

PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Thank you for your participation in our Club’s Annual General Meeting on 9 April 2022; the majority of you voted to carry the resolution proposed forward. On behalf of the Club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing General Committee Member Mr. Paul Lawlass for his long service to the Club – as the Chairman of the F&B Subcommittee over many years, and his most recent term as Chairman of the Social Subcommittee. We welcome Mrs. Nanthini Viknesh to the General Committee, and look forward to a productive new term working together. Mr. David Jones assumed full responsibility as General Manager of the Singapore Cricket Club from 18 April, and he has been working closely with the management team and staff. We look forward to his leadership, strategic planning of new initiatives and campaigns, and effective execution of Club operations and quality service. We were extremely pleased when the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Home Affairs jointly announced that all nightlife businesses would be allowed to fully reopen from 19 April 2022. Such establishments are still subject to safe management measures and have to operate within the boundaries of their specific licenses as they are systematically reversed by the relevant government agencies. We contacted the government agencies once the news was announced on 4 April, and at the time of writing, are waiting for our turn to have some of our other necessary licenses reverted. Once this is done, we will be able to progressively increase our entertainment offerings to the Membership! We now have all club F&B outlets operational. The Deli has been operational since 4 April and with the squashers and lawn bowlers able to have their post-game refreshments there, it has somewhat eased the pressure on the ever-popular Courtyard. The Men’s Bar re-opened on 19 April and it was wonderful to see the regulars returning to their favourite little corners of the Club. All outlets are operational within the prescribed safe management mandates and we do request our Members to continue to offer our safe distancing ambassadors your maximum cooperation as they go about their task of ensuring that the mandated protocols are observed. There are some challenges that the Club is facing – particularly with drastically rising food costs, utilities bills and manpower limitations. For example, the price of a tin of cooking oil alone has jumped by 70.45% from August 2020 to April 2022. Meanwhile, the cost of an egg is now 43.75% higher since September 2021. There are growing concerns about increasing beer and wine costs due to the war in Ukraine and the continued

global wine shortage. Even as many countries continue to open air travel, freight costs still remain high. At the same time, we have to grapple with space constraints as we resume and kickstart many activities. Despite all that, we remain positive as we think of creative solutions to ensure the quality and quantity of F&B served remain consistent. On 18 April, we launched a new set of F&B main ala carte and snack menus across all outlets – this menu revamp exercise was conducted following feedback received from the Membership and a study of Member food order trends to determine what popular dishes should be retained, what we could improve upon, and what needed replacing. We hope you will enjoy what the F&B Department has carefully developed and curated for your palate’s pleasure. Three-day grandstand and combination tickets for the public for this year’s Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix were snapped up within six hours. At the time of writing, we are finalising discussions with the event organiser and look forward to launching sales for the SCC Night Race soon. The offering of combination tickets is additional good news for us as it suggests that there will be entertainment and public F&B kiosks on Padang field. The easing of safe management measures also mean we can look forward to organising our other major Club celebrations soon. Most Sports Sections have also resumed, with team sports back on the Padang and many national leagues expected to start shortly. Whether you are a competitive or social player, prefer field, court or indoor sports, we have 13 Sports Sections for you to join, participate in and make new friends. We strongly encourage you to get involved in at least one Section; for more information and to register, do contact the Sports Department at SportsDept@scc.org.sg. For members inclined to more leisurely and hobby related activities with fellow Members e.g. trail walks, bike rides or chess/mahjong or seek to volunteer in our community focussed projects, keep a look-out for the Member Engagement initiatives in our eBlasts. The Club management and staff are working hard to bring the Club back not just to the pre-pandemic bustling environment but with improved services and offerings and efficient streamlined processes. Annual General Meeting 9 April 2022

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Singapore Cricket Club was conducted on 9 April 2022 virtually in the Club, due to COVID-19 safe management restrictions. Chairman Zoher Saleh Motiwalla called the meeting to order at 11.00am and voting was opened shortly after – this year, Members voted electronically while a small number of Members visited the Club to receive assistance with online registration and voting, while still adhering to safe distancing measures. The Chairman took questions about the proposed Resolution from the virtual floor, following which the meeting was adjourned at 11.21am. The meeting resumed at 6.00pm. With all businesses of the AGM concluded, the Chairman declared the meeting closed at 7.21pm. The Club extends its congratulations to the newly elected office Bearers at this year’s AGM. NOTICE OF RESOLUTION TENDERED PERSUANT TO RULE 57(D) OF THE RULES OF THE SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB.

RESOLUTION 1 THAT the current Rule 12 be and is hereby amended in the manner set out in the annexure hereto entitled “Resolution One – Proposed Amendments to Rule 12(d)” or in such other manner as this AGM may approve in whole or in parts with or without amendments and the General Committee be empowered to compile the amended Rule as approved by this AGM for submission to the Registrar of Societies for sanction. The amendment is intended to remove the restriction on Term Members and Sports Members from sitting on Sub Committees of the General Committee. The Resolution is declared carried by majority

The Wine Circle has been active lately.

HONG BAO SPARKLING WINE KNOWLEDGE DINNER On 21 February, we enjoyed a Hong Bao Sparkling Wine Knowledge Dinner at the Padang Restaurant. It was the first inperson event for the Wine Circle in a while, and included a threecourse dinner, along with tastings of six sparkling wines, two of which were Champagnes. Featuring commentary from top wine expert Jackie Ang, the event provided a good chance for attendees to learn more about everything from the production process to what’s popular in Singapore.

WINE CIRCLE AGM The Circle’s Annual General Meeting in the Gilmour Room offered a chance to thank the Committee from the past year. A new Committee was elected, with Naveen Gupta remaining as Convener and Tushar Doshi moving over to become Treasurer. James Blythman was voted in as Events Coordinator, and Shane Dewar named Secretary. Rags Raghavan and Joanna Ossinger were voted in as Committee Members. In addition, Amit Kumar Sharma and Maria Ji Hyun Lee joined the Committee.

MARCH RIESLING WINE PROMOTION A Riesling wine promotion was held in March, keyed around International Riesling Day in the middle of the month. Groups of five Wine Circle members could gather and be provided with two bottles of wine featuring the varietal, one dry and one sweet.

A good time was had by all, and Wine Circle members continue to make connections in our small-group tables as we learn about the various tipples on offer. SCC Kayak and Clean-Up Report On 20 February 2022

Written by Ishath Sandeep It was a bright sunny morning when I woke up and got ready to go to Passion Wave. The Kayak and Clean-Up event organized by SCC was something I was looking forward to; upon reaching the venue, the coordinator gave us instructions on how to paddle. He also guided us on how we should pick up plastic, paper, metal, and other such material items, while avoiding picking up tree barks, leaves, mud, and other things found in nature. We then collected our kayak, life jacket and paddles and set off to the water with each kayak containing its own bucket for trash collection. My dad and I got into our kayak and began venturing out. Admittedly, as a scaredy cat, I was hesitant and struck with fear in the beginning but after a few minutes, I got used to the process and eventually began kayaking. My mom was in another kayak on her own as the kayak that I was in only had space for two people. It took us some time to get to the park connector side where there was a lot of trash. We started picking up trash and found items such as masks, plastic bags, cans, straws, bottle caps and even slippers to name a few! We were quite quick in filling up our bucket. As we paddled, we even spotted some fun stuff we can only see in nature like an otter rolling on the sand and a wild stork that was flying around wildly. In the excitement of it all, we saw two people fall off their kayaks in a funny moment where thankfully the water was shallow, otherwise they would have struggled. I brought my waterproof camera, so I took many beautiful photos. When we got back to shore, we washed our life vests and paddles and put them back where we took them from. The last thing we did was discard all the trash into a net bag and weighed them. Overall, it was an amazing experience, and it made me mindful about disposing my trash in the future. Thank you, SCC, for organizing this fun and meaningful event to keep Singapore clean and I hope to be a part of many such activities.

SCC Beach Clean-Up Report On 26 March 2022 at Changi Beach

Written by Anya Nanaki Bawa, UWCSEA Grade 10 Student Early on 26 March, on a bright and inviting morning, I had the opportunity to take action against the ongoing issue of unclean beaches and the consequences of single-use plastic on marine life through the SCC community outreach program. My family and I were able to participate in the Changi Beach clean-up along with other SCC members. This experience not only allowed me to see first-hand the gravity of the impact of single-use plastic, but also highlighted how critical it is to change our habits and encourage the participation of others when it comes to tackling marine conservation. As a high school student who is aware of several local and international initiatives surrounding the topic of marine conservation, a beach cleaning activity was the ideal activity that merged my concern for marine life together with the opportunity to actively participate in a crucial cause. As students, we are constantly taught about the consequences of our everyday actions; for example, an act as simple as discarding a disposable mask can cause the feet of a bird to be bound together, while a plastic bag can deceive a turtle hunting for food by giving the illusion of a jellyfish. It is so easy for us to forget our actions, even the smallest ones, leave an impact on our planet. This, for me, became apparent when I physically had to pick plastic bottle caps and straws out of the water and into a bucket. Initially, I was pleasantly surprised as I had imagined the beach to be far more polluted than it was. However, as we approached the water, the reality of the litter became clearer and clearer when we began finding several strips of plastic torn from plastic bags, straws, packaging and styrofoam containers buried under the sand and even in the water. Throughout that morning, I was constantly reminded of the importance of social and environmental responsibility. I was also pleasantly surprised by the dedication and commitment of various others doing their parts in cleaning the beach, whether independently or through SCC. It was clear that as a society, Singapore is slowly transitioning to more sustainable, eco-friendly habits and more importantly, people are starting to lean towards this change. I speak for the future generations when I say every opportunity we are given to care for our planet is one that allows us to try our best to ensure that the consequences of the actions by previous generations do not hinder our future. The productivity and effectiveness of the SCC team made it easy for us to make a difference, everyone’s efforts were collected systematically, and the distribution of equipment was very organized. I would like to thank the Singapore Cricket Club for allowing me and my family to take part in a meaningful initiative organized so seamlessly. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and look forward to future events.

Sport Introduction:

A GUIDE TO PLAYING BALUT

Balut is a game of dice that is played for fun in teams or groups of players; it is usually played at tables of four persons each but the game can also be played with any reasonable number of players. The cbjective is to accumulate the greatest number of points over seven ‘rounds’ of play. At Singapore Cricket Club, the Balut Section plays the STC version of Balut, named after the Singapore Town Club where these rules were adopted in 1978, and is played across dozens of Members’ Clubs and bars across South-East Asia. (The International Balut Federation plays a different version).

Equipment needed: • A cup or other receptacle for throwing the dice • Five standard dice • A mat or flat surface, and • A score sheet

2. How to Play

At the beginning of every game, each player will place the die in front, with the six on top, and two facing him/her. Use a finger to flick the die, and the player with the highest number will be the first to start.

Each player in turn throws the dice up to three times. After each throw the player may take one or more die out of play or return one or more dice back into play. Once a die has been put back in the cup, however, it may not be taken out. At the end of three throws, or earlier if the player decides, the pips on dice that remain (from the last throw and those out of play) are to be used for computing that round's score. The score sheet has seven categories and each category can be scored once in that game. If at the end of three throws the player has no score then one row must be 'scratched', i.e. deleted, will carry a zero score, and not be available for scoring in that game again. All scores are the sum of the pips on the dice, except for a Balut, which always scores 30 points. One player, designated as scorer, records the scores in a column on the score sheet. Play will proceed in a clockwise manner.

Begin the game by determining which player is the first to start.

Scoring Categories The scoring categories are: • 4: Any combination of fours (4,8,12,16 or 20) • 5: Any combination of fives (5,10,15,20 or 25) • 6: Any combination of sixes (6,12,18,24 or 30) • Straight: A line of 1-2-3-4-5 (15) or 2-3-4-5-6 (20) • Full House: 3 of one number and 2 of another (e.g. Three 6s and Two 5s = score of 28) • Choice**: The sum of all the pips (3-4-5-5-6 = score of 23) • Balut: Five of any one number, always scoring 30

After the first player throws, the second player throws and after the last player, the dice return to the first player and this continues until each player has thrown six rounds - each time scoring or scratching one of the rows - this leaves us with one vacant row against each player, or what we call ‘Half Time‘ where the sub-total is calculated.

4. Things to Note Cocked Dice If, after the dice are thrown, they do not lie flat on the mat or designated surface (see top left), or they leave the mat, then the throw is deemed to be 'cocked' and the throw must be retaken.

General Etiquette Once the player has completed the throw(s) for the round, and communicated their score to the Scorer, then the player should put the dice back in the cup and pass the cup to the next player (moving in a clockwise direction - see top right).

At 'Half Time' the scorer tallies the Sub-Totals and announces the scores at that point for each player and what row they have left to score. The round is then played and the scorer announces the scores.

POT GAMES 2022 After a hiatus of more than two years, it was exhilarating for our Members to be able to play against another Club and the POT Games hosted by Tanglin Club (TC) provided this opportunity. 16 players from each Club battled it out on 12 March. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we had to play under trying conditions with players confined to the same table and same opponents for all eight rounds. No moving around, masks on all the time, no idle chatter, no liquid refreshments other than water and so on but still, it was great to meet our good friends from TC. We started off well with a slim lead of 25 points after the first round but lost that lead in the second round to TC who then had a margin of 67 points. We regained the lead on the third but failed to hold on to it and we could not muster enough points to overtake TC in the subsequent rounds. Final score was Tanglin Club 12,049 points / SCC 11,858 points a convincing victory by TC and one that comes after eight years. On an individual level, TC’s Anand Menon took the lead with 860 points followed by Padmini and Vikram. Our Balagopal came in fourth and just ahead of Foo Yong by a mere single point. Captain is now going to initiate training sessions for our players who seem to have lost their touch due to lack of competitive play for a long time! But seriously, TC played well and there is no taking away their rightful victory.

FEBRUARY SECTION GAMES We had joint winners for the February games on 12th and 17th of that month with 633 points shared by Else Stokkmo and Mahes Velupillai. Usually the winner would be decided by a throw of the box for choice but the Section Committee felt this was not fair and so both winners will be given the top prizes. Philippe Provost took the honour for the lowest score of 496 points. As there were no games in March due to planned renovations in the Gilmour Room which were later postponed, the prizes will be given at the April Section Night.

BALUTING WITH COVID At the time of writing this report, restrictions have been further eased and we are allowed to have up to 30 players who will need to remain masked and unable to move around tables. Food will now be allowed but only before or after the game and there will not be any food or beverages served or consumed during the game. While these are not yet ideal conditions for Balut, which is a very social game, we will take the conditions as they come and we hope for full normality in the very near future. On the horizon is the resumption of STC Inter Club League and if the situation improves further, we could also see the return of Triangular Club, Padang Shield with SRC, Conviviality Cup and the jewel in the crown, the Annual Interport involving local and foreign Clubs. Not to forget the occasional friendly matches and perhaps a couple of tours thrown in for good measure. Everything is very “iffy” with a fluid COVID-19 situation evolving but we do hope we will be able to resume more games as time goes.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN The much-awaited POT Games between Tanglin Club and the Singapore Cricket Club was actualised after a lapse of two years courtesy of COVID-19! In the first quarter of 2022, the much-awaited TC and SCC POT Games could finally be played again. Tanglin Club hosted us this round (which was delayed from October 2021) and despite putting up a strong resistance, SCC Bowlers managed to walk away with the Bowls trophy again. SCC Bowls Section fielded eight pairs to battle against the lawn bowlers from Tanglin Club. Our sincere appreciation also goes out to the bowlers of Tanglin Club as being a younger section than ours, they have improved by leaps and bounds and deserve the admiration for their never-say-die spirit. Congratulations to the comradeship, the camaraderie and community of Bowls.

NATIONAL SINGLES 21 SHOTS 2022 The March weekend of 12 to 13 witnessed the nail-biting National Bowls Singles quarter finals, semi finals and finals games of seven men and two ladies from SCC who competed in the National Singles 21 Shots Championship. Shermeen Lim in her usual graceful and gracious top form won all her games through to the very end to clinch the Champion title after a 21-16 win over her opponent Jane Low from ELBC. Shermeen won this tournament in 2021 as well. As for the men’s finals, our SCC President Zoher Motiwalla met top-seeded bowler Anthony Loh who had won this tournament last year. A very consistent Anthony stole away and Zoher came in runner-up. Shermeen Lim will be representing Singapore in the World Champion of Champions in New Zealand later this year. She has flown the Singapore flag in past events and we wish her continued success in this next endeavour and adventure!! Congratulations and well done to all our Bowlers who have represented SCC brilliantly, courageously and skilfully and put up a great showing in the competition and also in supporting their teammates. Both winners successfully defended their titles. Who can predict what the outcome at the world stage as well as the local battle for the best next year will be! Kudos to our SCC Bowlers!! After a two-year hiatus, the sound of leather on willow in a competitive fixture is finally nearing. With the introduction of the rule of 30 for team sports in March, we will begin league cricket again in April. At the time of writing, the first fixture had not yet been played, but there is certainly a palpable sense of excitement in the Section about the return of competitive action. Our thanks to Dene Border and the Club for navigating the many complexities of obtaining approval from SportSG for the Padang and Dempsey to be designated ‘approved’ sports facilities within the rule of 30 protocols. The effort, thought and form-filling required to achieve this should not be underestimated. At the start of the year, we resumed our ‘Padang Pairs’ tournament and dusted off the inevitable mould from kit bags after a fallow period of onfield activity. The innovative format whereby players bat in pairs and are deducted runs at the fall of a wicket – rather than suffer a forlorn trudge back to the pavilion – encourages batsmen to act with a little more impunity than usual. Think boundary clearance, rather than tactical nudges. So far this year, the tournament has seen some 100+ Members of the Section out on the turf at Dempsey or the Padang. Elsewhere, we held our AGM in February. As every democratic institution should pride itself on, the transparency and debate on these occasions is a fine example of a Section in rude health. Certainly the Section’s coffers are well filled after two years of limited action and we look forward to investing in the Section in 2022. At the AGM, we bid farewell – and much thanks – to our outgoing Convenor, Suresh Kalpathy, who has nobly served the Section for the past three years. His parting endeavour was the launch of a new Cricket Academy, an independent entity supported by the Club to develop junior cricket in Singapore. This is an exciting development led by David Bennett which will be a boon to grassroots cricket on the island. Section Members David Bennett, Dene Border, Suresh Kalpathy, Krishna Prasad, Ash Raivadera and Lee Slater will serve as Board Members of the Cricket Academy in 2022. We also elected a new Committee made up of Lee Slater (Convenor), Dene Border (Captain of Cricket), Christian Stobbs (Secretary), Hasan Jafri (Treasurer), Harry Taylor (Tours & Fixtures Secretary), Sandeep Uberoi (Social Secretary), Sai Pogaru (JSM Representative) and Krishna Natarajan (Sat XI Representative).

The committee met shortly after the AGM and set out their priorities for the year. These include: • Getting the Section playing cricket as much as we can • Maintaining the momentum instilled in the Section by departing Director of Cricket, Scott Mckechnie • Restarting cricket tours (the first one, to Kuala Lumpur, will be in June) • Bringing back the T15 morning league • Launching new initiatives for ladies cricket • Introducing more charitable endeavours of the Section • Revitalising our social media activity There is much to be optimistic about as play resumes in 2022. Our thanks to all at the Club for their unwavering support. We look forward to the sound of leather on willow echoing regularly around the hallowed auditorium of the Padang.

March was quiet. As a consolation we received welcome news that COVID-19 measures were being relaxed across Singapore. Sporting fans at SCC are now enjoying the relaxed new guidelines. Darts Section can look forward to increased numbers when we resume our Darts monthly sessions at The Oval & Verandah from 25 April. Let’s hope we can return to the normal fun filled evenings of the past which makes Darts such a huge social event. Please look out for latest updates from the Section Committee.

FOOTBALL SECTION AGM 2022 The Football Section held our AGM 2022 on 20 March 2022, at the Padang Restaurant. It was attended by 20 Members of the Section and the 2022 Section Committee was re-elected unopposed. The Convenor’s report shared information on the past year’s activities, actions and achievements that were implemented in 2021. The plans for 2022 were also shared. SCC WOMEN’S SFL FRIENDLY MATCHES Our SCC Women’s SFL kicked off the first friendly games of the year as they battled fiercely with two really great sides – Tiong Bahru Women’s team and Hougang Ladies. Our ladies played in two 5-v-5 games consisting of four halves (10 mins per half). The two friendly games were great experiences for the ladies team as they managed to get a feel of playing competitive football. They did really well in both matches and were able to translate the skills which they have acquired during their weekly sessions. We are excited for the prospect of competing in their first ever major tournament season in the Football Association Women’s National League. Keep up the good work ladies!

RESUMPTION OF 11-A-SIDE FOOTBALL After a long two years of waiting, we are delighted to announce that we are now able to resume playing 11-a-side football as our Club has received the approval of Team Sports under the Vaccination-Differentiated Safe Management Measures (VDS) for up to 30 fully vaccinated participants. Our competitive teams, such as the SCC SFL and SCC Tigers, have already started playing 11-a-side football at the Padang as we start preparing for our respective tournaments in the FAS Singapore Football League and the Equatorial Football League.

Things have indeed been looking up for the Golf Section since the beginning of April 2022 with the relaxation of both the COVID-19 rules/regulations and travel restrictions especially in relation to travel in Malaysia and other countries. You can expect a packed calendar for the year ahead and hopefully we can get back to life as we knew it before COVID-19. On 10 February 2022, we had an amazing turn out for the SCC Ang Bao Game at the Warren Golf & Country Club. The event was a tremendous success and we thank you for your participation in support of this traditional Golf Section event. Since the SCC Ang Bao Game we have had the following events:1. Social Game at the Singapore Island Country Club (Island Course) on 24 February 2022; 2. POT Games (Golf) at the Orchid Country Club on 3 March 2022; and 3. SCC Social & Friendly Game with the British Club at the Tanah Merah Country Club (Tampines Course) on 1 April 2022. Once again, the Member turnout was superb and it was great to see old and familiar faces and some new ones too. We truly appreciate the fact that our Members took the time from their busy schedules in support of our events. The next event is a prelude to our SCC Annual Championship on Friday, 24 June 2022 at Sentosa Golf Club (Serapong Course). We are having a social game at Sentosa, Serapong Course on 27 April 2022. Our members can take this as a “practice round” for the Annual game. We look forward to your continued support and participation throughout the year ahead and watch this space for what is upcoming. The Club received some great news recently with the Padang field getting the green light having applied to conduct activities in groups of 30. Finally, we have full games after a nearly two-year sabbatical. For those who’ve been missing out, you can now play 11-a-side games on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5.45pm to 7pm, and round it off with dinner at the Club. Perfect way to end the work day, if you ask me.

MEMBERS’ CUP Another thing we’ve missed with the enforced sabbatical was the Members’ Cup which is slated to return in a new format. Traditionally, Section Members are divided into teams based on the last digit of their membership numbers. We’ll have ten teams and each Member scores points based on the result of their games on Mondays or Wednesdays. Obviously, the teams will have their points tracked in a table, but I’m sure you’re wondering why Members score points? Well, there’ll be a Players’ league table too. So there’ll be two tables to keep tabs on, the team and the individual. We’ll give you updates on both in the next episode so you can support your favourite team and players, with the coveted Members’ Cup Challenge Trophy up for grabs, with medals and F&B vouchers for those who triumph.

NATIONAL JUNIOR LEAGUE In other news, the National Junior League (NJL) has resumed, and we’ve entered a team each for the boys’ and girl’ competitions. One drawback is that the NJL will be played in a 4 v 4 format, despite the easing of restrictions. Even with the odd format, Coach Kanan is quietly confident of both teams getting medals. SQUASH SECTION AGM The Squash Section’s AGM was held on 12 February with a healthy attendance from our players. Rahul Khare was re-elected as the Convenor, and new Members Chua Man Tong, Timothy Soh and Tom Bilyard (co-opted member) joined the team. The Squash Section also extends its gratitude to Ben Chandler, Mohamed Rizal and Andrea Nicholas, who have stepped down from the Section Committee after years of service.

SCC SQUASH PLAYERS IN EXTERNAL TOURNAMENTS SCC Squash has always been home to many outstanding squash players, some of which have done well in external tournaments in early 2022. In the Marigold 2022 SGSquash Satellite tournament in February, Aaron Liang, Chua Man The SCC Squash Committee members elected at the Squash Section AGM. (Some members were not Tong and Jerome Aw were placed in the top 4. In the physically present at the AGM and hence are not pictured.) Marigold 2022 National Squash Championships in early March, Aaron Liang and Chua Man Tong were placed in the top 4 for the Men’s Premier category, James Nicholas and Tay Zi Hang were placed in the top 4 for the Men’s Division 1 category, and Wai Yhann, Ong Zhe Sim and Vicky Lai were placed in the top 4 for the Women’s Premier category. In the Oncocare National Junior Squash Championships 2022, Ethan Chua placed first in the Boys’ Under-17 category, Ong Zhe Sim placed first in the Girls’ Under-17 and Under-19 categories, and Vicky Lai placed second in the Girls’ Under-19 category. In the Marigold 2022 SGSquash Masters Open tournament in early April, Tom Bilyard placed first and Ashish Jain placed third in the Men’s Masters 1 category. Congratulations to all the winners!

FAREWELL TO ANDREA NICHOLAS Andrea has relocated and will no longer be in Singapore for the time being. The contributions she made to the Squash Section over the past decade (or more) can fill pages, and she will be sorely missed. She last held the post of Secretary in the Squash Section Committee. Prior to that, she had taken on various roles in the Squash Committee over the years, ranging from Convenor to Ladies Captain. Beyond the titles, she has been an important pillar of the Squash Section, shaping the culture of the Section, building up the ladies’ squash team, mentoring young JSMs and making sure new joiners to the Section always feel welcomed. Her charm off-court belies her killer instinct on court – she plays a really good game of squash to boot! One of our members, Mahes, had this to say about Andrea: “Andrea has a great personality and is a very ardent squash player with great passion for the sport. She will always be fondly missed by the SCC squash community for her dedication, commitment, enthusiasm and love for the sport. We hope that she will carry on the good work when she returns. She’s a very sincere person who is prepared to play a game of Rizal presenting Andrea with a farewell gift. squash with any player of any grade (young, old and newbies too). She inspires new players and welcomes them to the Section. Sometimes, she’d push you to your limits to help you improve in your game. She’ll give encouragement and good advice, and in doing so she piques your interest in the sport – whether it’s through drills, games or just physical training. We’ll miss her a lot but look forward to her return in a few years’ time. On a personal note, Andrea is a true and sincere friend. A great sportswoman on our squash tours and a great tourist too. Her only weakness – she collapses the next day if she goes overboard with too many drinks!”
