Last weekend, Scrapbook Generation celebrated its tenth birthday. Things have changed since we first opened our doors in 2004! In the beginning, we sold supplies, hosted evening crops, and taught a few classes. Ten years later, our business bears little resemblance to the early days. My daughter Allison (Davis) said it wonderfully in a Facebook post about this milestone in life of Scrapbook Generation. “I remember laughing when my mom mentioned opening a scrapbook store,” she wrote. “Fast forward 10 years and we've taken that small retail store and expanded to a larger store, a publishing company, and now an online store shipping internationally. I never dreamed we would have bestselling books sold in stores all over the country or that we would be shipping to countries that I had never even heard of or that I would end up seeing my boys on the Today show. What an amazing ride the last ten years have been. I'm proud of us and how hard we have all worked. We make a great team and only occasionally want to rip each other’s hair out. Thank you to my mom and my aunt for giving me a job that ended up showing me my calling...I feel so very lucky to have that!” Allison’s words sum up how I feel, too. So very lucky for so many reasons. I’ve had a front row seat to watch my sister Karin grow into a wonderful host and manager for our Springfield store. She knows everyone’s name, and usually children and husbands, too! I’ve watched my older daughter Stacey thrive and meet every challenge we’ve thrown at her, be it accounting, technology, or managing
our constantly-expanding online store. And I’ve watched my younger daughter Allison go from someone who had to be coerced into making a layout for a store display to someone who creates beautiful layouts and sketches that inspire people around the globe. Me? I love this business the four of us have created with all my heart. It’s crazy to think how much it means to me. Happy birthday, SG...I hope there are many more!

Add more detail to border-punched areas by hand-stitching through the punched design. For example, this punch has a small dot pattern that was quick and easy to stitch through.

Create a unique and customized background with border punches. Using the same color paper, layer several borderpunched strips over each other.
Use a border punch like a mask to get even more uses from the intricate designs. After punching the spider web design, I placed it on the card base and used an ink auber to transfer the ink through the punched area.

Dress up a rosette or accordion flower by border-punching one side before scoring and folding.
Using the punched edges of a border strip as a guide, create mini tags by cutting the punched length into strips.

Layer several strips that have been punched with a border punch over a die-cut shape. I used a scalloped punch to cover a circle and turned it into a pumpkin.
Fill punched out spaces with glue and glitter to add a sparkly touch to a design. I used black glitter to fill in the eyes, nose, and mouth of the jack-olanterns.

Because of the orientation of the photos and what was in the photos, I went with a larger size (3x5) than suggested on the sketch. If I had cropped my photos down to the size on the sketch I would either be cutting off part of Drew's head or part of the pumpkin.

To make up for the absent horizontal strips, I added a lot more vertical strips to my layout. I also arranged them in a straight line instead of staggering them like they are on the sketch and used longer strips to accommodate the taller photos.

To match the fall theme of my layout, I used leaves instead of stars and arranged them a little differently. I created a large stitched swirl and placed the leaves to coordinate with it.

I had a lot of photos that I wanted to include so I stretched the one-page sketch into a two-page layout. This also gave me an opportunity to use larger photos (3x4) than the photos suggested on the sketch.

Since I extended my photos almost all the way across the page, I eliminated the horizontal strips. There just wasn't a lot of room left to add those strips and the stars. To make up for that, I added a few stars just under the last photo on the right.

I used a lot more vertical strips on this layout since I stretched it to fit two pages. There would have been a lot of open, white space if I just used the amount of strips on the sketch. I also used several different widths of strips and used longer strips to accommodate the larger photos.

Instead of using stars at the ends of the strips, I cut a point a the bottom end of each strip and a "v" at the top ends of each strip to create arrow strips. I accented it all with a few stars and wooden arrows.

I decided to use the design of the sketch as a smaller element on a two-page layout. I used the idea of the horizontal strips and stars, the three photos, the title, and the journaling at the top of my layout to accent the larger photos and design on the bottom part of the layout.

I stretched the horizontal strips all the way across to cover both pages. I also added another horizontal strip along the bottom of the 6x4 photos to help tie the two separate designs together.

Due to space, I eliminated the vertical strips and star on this layout. I also chose not to slant the design of the page and instead went with a straight design. I love the look of slanted designs but with the amount of photos and the size of photos that I wanted to use, slanting it made it harder to fit in all the elements I wanted to use.

I added an extra background to the layout. In all honesty, this was due to a runaway ink pad that landed right smack on the top edge of my layout. Instead of recreating the whole layout, I just cut a 3/4� strip off the top and bottom of the layout and adhered them to different, coordinating piece of cardstock. It ended up being a good mistake!

It’s a constant wish. More time in each day! But since we know that’s not going to happen, fortunately there are ways to save time when scrapbooking. Sometimes I like to get a layout done quickly. At other times, I like to enjoy the process more. But for me, it’s always all about time.

THE ONE-HOUR LAYOUT
HOW IT WORKS FOR ME... My first step is to choose a sketch. I love using lots of patterned paper, and I love fall colors. Getting the chance to use lots of my favorite colors and patterns made this sketch a winner for me. Having only four photos to select also made getting started quick and easy. My biggest time saver? Choosing to work within one paper collection, like the Carta Bella “Hello Autumn� group I used for this layout. Gathering papers and stickers -- and knowing I am limiting myself to those choices -- makes the layout come together quickly. Instead of hand stitching, I opted to do faux stitching with a brown pen. It was the first time I had tried that technique, and I found that I like the look. It was a huge timesaver, too!

THE THREE-HOUR LAYOUT

HOW I SPENT MY TIME... Identical papers, identical photos, but a huge difference in time spent crafting. Much of my time on this layout went into the hand-stitching. It is the main focal point of the layout, and to make sure the lines were nicely curved, I first cut out a gently arched shape on cardstock to use as a template. It took a bit of trimming and adjusting to get it just the way I wanted it. I also did quite a bit of die-cutting for this layout. The leaves, pumpkin, and journaling label are all die-cuts. I had a die for a tree trunk, but it wasn’t tall enough, so instead, I used the wafer-thin die as a template to trace around -- I just extended the trunk to get the height I needed.

DEBBIE’S TIP #1 Because I used the busiest paper designs in the area where an embellishment cluster was going to be, I decided to die-cut a neutralcolored label to use as a backing for the cut-out owl, die-cut pumpkin, and word sticker. That way, they didn’t have to compete with the cute owl paper for attention. I also lifted the entire group off the page with foam adhesive.
DEBBIE’S TIP #2 I didn’t have a tree die that was large enough, but I did have a tree trunk die that was the shape I wanted. However, it wasn’t tall enough. Instead of using it in the die-cut machine, I traced around the trunk shape, elongated the trunk, and cut it out by hand.
DEBBIE’S TIP #3 I loved the Carta Bella papers in the collection, but for the small strips at the bottom, some of the patterns were a bit too big for the look I wanted. Luckily, I had the 6x6 paper pad that matched the collection, and I was able to use those scaled-down patterns for that area. I’ve found that lately, I almost always need those smaller patterns for my layouts -- for tiny banners, smaller strips, etc. I’ve also found that almost always, the 6x6 pads will have a few solids -like the dark green solid in this one -- that don’t appear in the 12x12 paper selections.

did you know? Carta Bella...Italian for “beautiful paper.” An apt name for the sister company to Echo Park Paper. Located in Orem, Utah, Carta Bella offers a product assortment featuring a sophisticated design style. Product collections include textured paper and coordinating items. How did Carta Bella get its start as a company? “Carta Bella Paper was launched in April of 2012 with the "Beautiful Moments" collection. Carta Bella was an instant success and quickly became identified as a high-quality, sister brand to Echo Park Paper.”
Was it already planned as a “phase two” when Echo Park Paper was started? “While the creation of a second brand was not an initial part of our business plan, we soon recognized after launching Echo Park Paper that there was a need in the marketplace for a brand that focused primarily on high quality textured paper.”
Why a second company instead of just adding to the releases of Echo Park Paper? “As we contemplated adding collections using textured paper, we felt that it was important to provide a brand distinction that would make it easy for both our retail partners and consumers to immediately identify the difference in our products. In other words, if you are buying paper with the Carta Bella brand, you know without question it will be a heavy-weight textured paper. And similarly, if you are buying paper with the Echo Park brand, you know it will be high-quality cardstock, but it will not be textured. Had we kept both product types under the Echo Park brand, this distinction would not necessarily be clear to our customers.”

Why was the decision made to go with textured paper for Carta Bella? “There are two primary reasons we chose to use textured paper to produce the Carta Bella collections. First, we recognized that a heavyweight, textured paper would lend itself to certain types of projects and crafters that may not being using our Echo Park paper. Second, because textured paper is more porous that smooth cardstock, during the printing process textured paper absorbs more ink than the smooth cardstock we use for the Echo Park collections. This process often gives the designs a very deep and rich appearance that you don’t find with other paper. We felt that the distinction in both the appearance of the designs and the heavier weight would give our customers additional options that were not already available from other manufacturers.”
Is the Carta Bella brand targeted to a different audience than Echo Park?
“I don’t think Carta Bella is necessarily targeted at a different audience. Rather, I would say that it reaches a broader audience. In general, we see crafters buying products based on themes or specific project needs. Because of this, we believe the audience for both brands is very similar. However, there is no question that by giving the scrapbooking and paper crafting consumers an additional option in paper weight, as well as designs, the Carta Bella brand allows our company to reach a broader audience than we may have with only Echo Park.”

How is a Carta Bella collection developed?
“Carta Bella collections start one of two ways. The first is initiated by Jody Hunt, our creative director. He will request a specific theme, such as ‘summer’ from one of our in-house or out-of-house designers. The second process includes a designer pitching an idea for a collection to Jody. From there initial designs are submitted to the art department for acceptance. All collections go through a rigorous system of approval, changes, tweaks, and updates until they are ready for print. Not all collections make it to the final printing stage. Some collections take over a year to develop, while others are created within a month. Collection names, style, colors, and design are all presented to a panel who then votes on whether or not the collection is ready to move forward. A lot of care and thought is put into every collection produced by Carta Bella Paper, and many hands have touched it by the time you see it on the shelves in your favorite store.”
Is there a difference in how product is developed for each company?
“At the beginning of the design process, a collection may be moved from Echo Park to Carta Bella depending upon whether the design seems to fit the textured brand of Carta Bella or the non-textured brand of Echo Park. While designers from Carta Bella or Echo Park most often design for that specific company, on occasion they may be asked to design a ‘textured’ collection or ‘non-textured’ collection. Every effort is made to ensure that the right collection ends up with the right brand.”

How do you create and maintain a separate brand identity for Carta Bella from Echo Park?
“In general, we try to maintain distinct designs styles between the two brands. While Echo Park will often use brighter colors and more whimsical themes, you will see Carta Bella collections use richer colors and more traditional elements and design styles. However, as many of our customers know, this is not always the case. It is not uncommon to see styles cross over from time-to-time between the brands.”
How do you keep things fresh in balancing the two companies?
“Constantly creating new designs on common themes can be challenging, but our amazing designers do an outstanding job at keeping our designs and products fresh. The job of balancing the styles, themes and designs falls on our creative

director, Jody Hunt. His job is to make sure the designs for both brands are complementary. As you can imagine, this is not easy. I believe Jody does a fantastic job of making sure the brands are distinct.”
How does social media impact Carta Bella and Echo Park? “We love interacting with our customers, fans, and friends through social media. One thing that I believe sets us apart from other companies is that we actually look at and comment on every single project uploaded to our Facebook page. I think this is particularly important because it not only keeps us connected with our customers, but it also allows us to see exactly how are products are being used. I am always fascinated and amazed at the creativity of the projects posted by our customers.”
What do you wish your customers knew about Carta Bella?
“We take what we do very seriously. From the initial design, to our fulfillment and shipping departments, we invest hundreds of hours in the production of each collection to make sure that the consumers’ experience with our products is always positive. It is very important to us that when a consumer buys a Carta Bella product, it exceeds their expectations. Each of our collections kits are hand assembled by our employees in our production facility in Utah. Every sheet of paper that is included in a collection kits has been personally inspected by one of our employees before it is assembled as part of a paper pack. This dedication to quality is really what sets us apart from other paper companies.”

Where do you see the scrapbooking industry in five years? “Scrapbooking has certainly changed over the last 10 years and we believe it will continue to change as we go forward during the next five years. Start by making the album using cardstock or patterned paper. Cut four pieces of paper (I used 6x4” strips). Fold them in half, then stack the folded pieces and adhere back to back. Cut another strip of paper for the cover, making it slightly longer than the others. Adhere to the front and back pages. • Add photos to the pages. • Decorate the pages with embellishments such as stickers, washi tape, and wood shapes. • Add titles, sentiments, and journaling to the pages. • Hold the album together with a ribbon bow.

This color palette on its own is not something that would normally inspire me. However, I found it worked really well for this particular group of photos. The hardest part was finding something in my stash that didn't have other bits of color added. This 6x6 pad from Basic Grey was given to me as a RAK a few years ago and had never been touched...until now. I pulled a sketch from the Allison Davis' ‘6x6 Paper Pad’ class and got to work. I loved the font of these letters that are part of the same Basic Grey collection, but they were originally grey and a pale orange. I added some glossy black paint to the word frightful and some ink and Stickles to the word night. Easy fix!”

“I took some time with this colour palette as I am usually drawn to the brighter colours. At first I wasn’t sure what to use to create this. For the first time this year I gathered together my colour palette supplies in a big box with no plan in mind. I sat looking at the colours for a while, then chose a photo that I wanted to scrapbook that had the same feel as the supplies. When I started my scrapbook layout I found that the supplies I wanted to use from the pile were all little bits and pieces, so I made a loose line of transparencies and die cuts, stickers and enamel right down the middle of my page, framing the two photos in both directions with colour and warmth. The photos have some really tiny details that are not easy to spot, and I found that this neutral colour palette really helped the details of the photos stand out more than they would against the bright cacophony I would otherwise have used. It is always great to challenge yourself to do something different. To quote Henry Ford, ‘If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.’ So embrace a challenging colour palette, even when you don't think it is your cup of tea!”

“This layout is one of my faves. It is the only time my husband's family was ever with us for Thanksgiving. His sister and her two daughters here did not know at that time that when they returned home, their husband/dad would be diagnosed with cancer and this was actually their last Thanksgiving with him. I am so glad I ‘made’ everyone take family photos that day. I scrapped those family photos using one of your Scrapbook Generation multi-layout kits -- one that used Authentique. At any rate, this photo, this race, this moment was the calm before the storm and an allegory for them that together they COULD finish strong. And one of his other sisters photographed is in her own cancer battle right now. Life comes at us fast. Pictures are precious reminders of great memories.”
