Goodbyes are never easy. But with this issue, Scrapbook Generation’s CREATE ends its two-year, 17-issue run. It’s been a great ride. We hope that we have been a positive force in the world of scrapbooking and papercrafting. I believe that -- with the talented and dedicated CREATE design team -- we have brought you the best and brightest. The goals that brought CREATE into being have been reached. Our online store, scrapbookgeneration.com, has grown, and then grown more. People worldwide are now aware of SG sketches and other products. That growth is primarily the reason that I made the decision to sign off. As with most family businesses, my sister Karin, my daughters Stacey and Allison, and myself all wear quite a few of those proverbial hats. The Springfield store is healthy and strong. We are thankful for that. Now, with the online store experiencing growth, I need to give it more of my time. The buying alone (isn’t that a great job...ordering cute scrapbook supplies?!) takes several hours of my time each day. And that’s only one of my responsibilities. Then I have that pesky penchant for taking on too much. I bet many of you do the same! About a year ago, I made the decision to write a book. The story of my cousins, Monica Keathley and Leslie Marsden, is compelling. Monica died three years ago following five years of being paralyzed from the neck down. Her paralysis stemmed from a viral infection, cutting short a life spent serving God as a missionary to Africa, a musician with a powerful voice, and a state missions leader in Arkansas. In an act of sacrifice I still can't fathom, Leslie walked away from her life, her 20-yearold business, and her community to care for her sister for as long as it took. Their story has to be told. And it’s up to me to tell it.
I’ve always loved writing. Ever since I won that essay contest in fourth grade. My life shows it. Journalism teacher for 25 years (including the fun of having my two red-headed daughters on my newspaper and yearbook staffs!). Along the way, there have been reporting gigs, church history books, community centennial books, and most recently, CREATE. To have time to write the story of Monica and Leslie, something in my life had to give. Thank you so much for the support you have given to this magazine the past two years. I’ll say it again. It’s been a great ride.

GIFT BAG: Adhere patterned paper to bag. Spread paint along edges of bag and sprinkle with glitter. Layer patterned paper and cardstock onto a piece of chipboard and adhere to bag. Decorate with glitter and stickers. Dye seam binding ribbon with distress ink and adhere a strip of the ribbon across the bottom of the bag and adhere a bow. Cut and fold strips of cardstock to create a paper bow and adhere to bag. Embellish with enamel dots and chipboard. CARD: Cut cardstock and adhere to front of card. Cut patterned paper, spread white paint around the edges, sprinkle with glitter and adhere to card. Adhere holly leaves, enamel dots and a sticker to card. Cut a sentiment from patterned paper and add to card with pop dots. Dye seam binding ribbon with distress ink, tie a bow, and adhere to card. GIFT CARD TAG: Cut a tag shape from patterned paper. Cut a second piece of patterned paper to fit the bottom of the tag and adhere to the front of the tag, creating a pocket to hold your gift card. Spread paint along the edges of the tag and sprinkle with glitter. Decorate tag with stickers and stamped images. Tuck a sentiment and diecut in the pocket with gift card. Dye seam binding ribbon with distress ink and tie a bow at the top of the tag. Create one-of-a-kind flower embellishments by combining colorful gelatos with texture paste. Use a favorite stencil to create a design for the petals.
ONE • To create flowers like these, use a stencil, Faber-Castell texture paste, and Faber-Castell gelatos. TWO • Mix individual colors of gelatos with the texture paste. THREE • Adhere stencil to cardstock with washi tape, to keep it tight against the cardstock. FOUR • Smooth each of the colors into the stencil, one color at a time. FIVE • Lift stencil and let dry, then cut around the flower shape. SIX • Add leftover texture paste to cardstock using a palette knife to create a matching border.

Use several shades of the same color of gelatos to create a background area to frame a series of photos. Tie in the rest of the layout by using more gelatos for paper edging.

ONE • Smear various gelatos along the background of the layout, behind the area where the photos will be placed. I chose pink shades to match my project. TWO • Use a water pen to blend in the gelatos, creating a messy background. I used the background to mimic the messy face of my daughter. THREE • Use another shade of gelatos to “distress ink” the edges of all the papers.

Create your own colorful patterned paper by starting with a black and white design and then adding touches of brightness with specialty markers.
ONE • Choose a patterned paper that will allow you to add your own touches of color. TWO • Color in shapes, like these hearts, to match another paper, like the stripes from this collection. I used Zig Clean Color Real Brush markers to color with. THREE • Go over both the colored hearts and the non-colored hearts with a Wink of Stella brush marker. This will soften the lines of the colored hearts and will make the plain hearts match a bit better.

Combine gelatos and misted water to create a dreamy background for an entire layout. It’s a simple technique that provides another use for a craft mat.

ONE • Place a non-stick craft sheet on your worktop. TWO • Use four small pieces of washi tape to indicate a 12x12 square. THREE • Inside the square draw lots of horizontal lines using gelatos. FOUR • Mist lightly with water. FIVE • Use a brush to mix the water and gelatos. SIX • Place a sheet of cardstock on top of the water and gelatos mixture. Press the cardstock down with your hand and strike it a bit. SEVEN • Lift the cardstock. Dry the cardstock with a heat tool, or place between kitchen towels under something heavy.

Using watercolor paper as a base, create unique embellishments by stamping designs and adding details with distress markers.
ONE • To stamp shells on watercolor paper, use archival ink. TWO • Lightly spritz with water. Using the brush tip of distress markers, apply desired colors. THREE • Create depth by adding color and blending with a water brush. FOUR • Once dry, cut around the edges of the stamped image and add detail with the fine-tip point of a distress marker. FIVE • Insert the brush tip end of a distress marker into the distress marker spritzer and spritz ink onto a few inked shells. SIX • To make the chipboard shell and seaweed strip, paint the chipboard with white acrylic paint; allow to dry. SEVEN • Using the brush tip of distress markers, apply the desired colors, then blend with a water brush. Set aside to dry.

Use a specialty marker (Chameleon) to create an ombre effect on shapes to be used as page embellishments. One marker is used for several shades of the same color.
ONE • On this layout, the chevrons are handmade embellishments using a specialty marker that creates several shades of a color from one marker. TWO • To get this same effect, first trace a chevron stencil onto white cardstock. THREE • Use Chameleon brand markers from top to bottom (light to dark) to create the ombre effect. FOUR • Cut out the shapes and add them to the layout.

Gelatos can be used in a variety of ways on a layout, including creating a background, making mists, and adding color inside stamped areas.

ONE • The arrows accents on the background of the layout were made with white gelatos. TWO • Additionally, I made my own mists in shades of pink and blue by using gelatos and mist bottles. THREE • I created stamped circles on the layout, and then colored inside them with more gelatos, mixing the gelatos with water and my fingers.

Create a focal point on a scrapbook layout by combining gelatos and water. Use a stamping block, and layer as many colors as you want.
ONE • After choosing colors that coordinate with the other aspects of your project, “smoosh” gelatos onto a clear stamping block. TWO • Generously mist the stamping block and gelatos with water. THREE • Wipe, using a circular motion, the stamping block on the cardstock. FOUR • Repeat the process to layer more colors.

Use an embossing folder and gelatos to create textured, colored embellishments for a layout. Using simple shapes like arrows and circles lets the technique stand out.

ONE • Cut the cardstock to shape. I used circles and arrows. TWO • Roughly color the inside of an embossing folder with several gelatos. THREE • Spritz with water. FOUR • Emboss the cardstock pieces. They will emerge colored. FIVE • You can run through several cardstock pieces, spritzing with water between embossing runs.

Create your own custom mist by dissolving gelatos in water. Add to a spritz bottle and you are ready to add drops of color to your page.
ONE • Use gelatos to make a mist by adding some into a small container. You can “color” on the bottom of the container or scrape off small pieces of the gelatos into the bowl. TWO • Add a little warm water. THREE • Stir with a craft stick or paintbrush until the gelato is completely dissolved and smooth. FOUR • Transfer the liquid into a small spray bottle. FIVE • The mist can be used as a spray, or for splatters. The metallic gelatos add just a bit of shimmer.

I decided to use only the left side of the two-page sketch to make a onepage layout. I centered the background instead of having it go all the way to the right edge.
Instead of using three smaller photos, I wanted to focus on one large focal photo and then added a few smaller photos as accents. Since the three photos on the sketch are fairly small, there was a lot of room for extra photo space.
Since I used a larger photo, I extended the height of the background and the banner strips to fit. If I had kept them the same height as the sketch suggests there wouldn’t have been much paper showing.

I love the look of extra-large photos on a layout so I used a 9 x 8 photo in place of all the photos on the right page. Since the photo size is the same size as the photo block on the sketch I didn’t have to make any extra adjustments.
I added a few extra photos to the right page on the bottom corner of the 9 x 8 photo. If I ever have a large amount of empty space on a large photo I like added a little cluster of small photos and embellishments to it.

I used a 6 x 8 element piece from the Simple Stories collection in place of the banner strips. I really like the wooden pattern and the hearts on the bottom.
I added a few extra strips on the background piece. There is plenty of space on the sketch to add a few more strips on the background if you want to get in some more paper or patterns.

I extended the whole design of the sketch to reach the top and bottom of the layout. I still followed the same general design, it’s just to the edges.
For the photo block on the right page I simply added three 3 x 3 photos to make each row of photos reach the edges.

On the left page I used a variety of sizes of strips instead of all the same width as they are on the sketch. I also extended them all the way to the top and bottom of the layout.
I flipped the photos on the left page. Most of my photos were horizontal and with the extended height of the background pieces I had plenty of room for my photos to switch orientation. I also added an extra photo.

If you’ve never given a sunburst layout a try, what are you waiting for?! We challenged the SG CREATE team to make a layout with the single-page sketch I designed for this issue, and the results are varied and clever!

Truth be told, I have wasted many hours (and destroyed many an innocent sheet of paper) moving pieces of paper around on a page trying to come up with an interesting design. That’s why I’m so sold on sketches. For me, they are the ultimate time saver. I know that if I like the sketch, I’m going to like the end result. However, as far as time, this design is a bit more complicated and more labor-intensive than most sketch layouts, because of the sunburst design and the cutting involved. Despite the longer time involved, I’ve made this design three or four times, and I’ll have to say that those layouts are among my very favorites. I kept embellishments on this layout simple. The main focus stays on photos and on the sunburst, without too much competition from other features. I think the extra time spent constructing the sunburst was well worth it!

I was challenged by the starburst design of this sketch because it involved a lot more precise cutting and measuring than I typically use in my layouts. But it was a fun design to use and great for using papers from a collection that all coordinate. I like how the starburst design points into the photos to really highlight the subject of my layout, our new addition, Roxy. The design really lets her be the star of the page!”

I made this wedding layout with the sketch almost 'as is.' The only thing that makes it different are those stencil made circles made with gel medium, glitter and heat embossing over to make the colored circled background. This is a perfect sketch for one large photo and three similar small photos and two big embellishments clusters.

I turned my sketch into a double page layout and adjusted it slightly by moving things to the right of my double page.I kept pretty much to the original sketch with a few changes. I substituted my flags at the top for a fun scallop edge element with some supporting stars only. I added stamping and stenciling to my background for a fun look. And of course the best part for me was sewing the lines on the background starburst element created on the left. I love working with this sketch – a fun and versatile one for sure.”

As we don't celebrate Christmas I looked for other possible photos, and this wedding photo of daughter and her groom was my best choice. The greens and naturals were easy composed to the nice layout; the problem was with red and this light aqua-green color. So I added a few rhinestones, one red sticker of home (new weds, new home) and some red pearls and splashes to make it work.”

I didn't have any letters or emails that would be appropriate for this challenge, however, I did have a college newspaper article that I have been anxious to use. I used vellum in my laser printer to make a transparent copy of the actual newspaper article which lends to the industrial look of the paper. I often forget to use journaling on my layouts and this challenge helped remind me how important it is to tell the story in the photo."

As I pondered this journaling assignment, I really could not shake the thought that actual letters really don’t exist anymore, in a true ‘written on real paper’ sense. As I thought about how I communicate, and how others communicate with me, I was confronted with just how central my computer is to so much of my life. It’s my travel agent. My map. My chat screen. My file cabinet. My memory box. My photo lab. My music binder. My calendar. My address book. My mailbox. My notepad. My diary. It’s all that. And when it began to die on me in 2009, I availed myself of its very convenience and promptly ordered another one, delivered right to my door. How technology has metamorphosed so much of my life constantly boggles my mind. I wanted to pay tribute to not only the changing tide of communication, but also to document a bit of the pop culture aspect of it, how online shopping brings the world - including amazing Scrapbook Generation scrapbooking supplies - right to my front door, and how seamless all the transition can be. I also thought it would be fun to put down the configuration of the computer from the purchase confirmation email. Someday my grandkids may be amazed that I ‘only had 3.5 GHz’.”

This challenge was just what I needed to document some beloved email messages I had saved from my youngest son. I chose one of them to highlight as part of my journaling. The story behind these emails is written on a journaling card tucked behind the photo. I then took it a step further and printed several of these messages on a single sheet of paper and tucked it behind the journaling card. It feels so good to get this documented.”

BIRTHDAY CARD “I used the tag sketch to make a card for my son's birthday. Besides some minor alterations in size, the most obvious change I made was to swap out the tree for a large circle instead. I followed the strip width pretty closely, adjusting the length as needed for the size of the card. These corrugated numbers from Jillibean Soup are some of my favorites. I altered them with paint and Stickles. End result: my son really liked it! This sketch was perfect for what I needed.�

“I decided to take a trip down memory lane for this layout and pulled an old photo of my brother and I in 1988. For some reason I struggle with Christmas scrapbooking so it was hard to choose my photo and supplies, but once I saw the cute Santa in the My Mind’s Eye die-cut pack, the page started to come together. I used a clear Wink of Stella pen to give Santa a little bit of snow like shimmer on his hat and coat. “I used Christmas coloured papers in cream, red and green, but not specifically designed for Christmas. The paper gives a Christmas feel but does not overwhlem with theme specific designs. I added my own spin onto this festive layout and supported the theme using festive stamps, embossing, a title and the beautiful golf die-cut wreath. Meet Lisa Marie Dones, a 50-year-old preschool administrative assistant in Hayward, California. She has agreed to give us an inside look at how scrapbooking impacts her life.
How and when did you get started scrapbooking? Sixteen years ago my sister tricked me into attending a home party scrapbook gathering. I was reluctant to start a hobby with two young boys at home, but once I realized I would be looking at their cute faces more often I was hooked!
Describe your scrap space? I am lucky enough to have a room dedicated to my hobby. I was able to design it to be most workable for me. I like everything neat, tidy, organized, within reach, visible and accessible. Reorganizing is a popular activity for organize-obsessed people like me, so I am always on the lookout for a new better solution. I like to use storage containers that are easy to travel with as I attend several scrapbook retreats each year.
Time spent scrapbooking? I spend a minimum of one-two hours a week being crafty in some capacity. Busy family life often keeps me from having more time to scrapbook, but as I always say if I wasn’t busy with life I wouldn’t take pictures therefore I would have nothing to scrapbook!

What are your best organizational tips? I keep like items together, organized by color and/or theme. I use containers that make the supplies visible. If you can see them you are more apt to use them.
How do you describe your style? I have always said that I have a black and white, square personality and that certainly comes through in my work. I like to keep my layouts about the photos and the story that they tell. I scrapbook events that are often four-six double page layouts so I try to decide on a style and carry it through the entire event. I remember the first time I stumbled upon a Scrapbook Generation sketch online I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame because of the use of 4x6 photos with the layouts containing simple clean lines.
Do you have a set budget for scrapbooking? I do not. Sadly there are not enough local scrapbook stores to shop at. I rely on my Scrapbook Generation club kits for the majority of my supplies as far as paper and basic embellishments go. I love that they always contain the latest releases. I do some online shopping when time allows.
Where do you get your inspiration? I follow many of my favorite manufacturer’s blogs to see new products. I also like SG sketchbooks and CREATE magazine, online paper crafting sites, and the latest design and color trends showcased in retail stores, design and home magazines.

Advice for finding more time to scrapbook? My secret for carving out time is a five-step program. 1. Make a plan 2. Commit to it 3. Involve a friend 4. Follow through 5. Be productive during this time.

Is there a social aspect to your hobby? I have a group of friends that share my love of paper crafting. We call ourselves the Lollipop Croppers and have been together for about 15 years. We get together to scrap, have been on a cruise, traveled to other states to visit stores‌ including Scrapbook Generation in Missouri, and hosted charity events all in the name of scrapbooking. The last few years we have attended many getaways hosted by Scrapbook U Creates.
What does this hobby mean to your life? In my family I am known as the one with the camera. I like to say that if not for me, my camera and my scrapbooks, years from now no one would ever know we lived! For me scrapbooking is such a worthwhile and meaningful hobby. I love that I am chronicling my family life. I pour lots of love into my layouts and I get a great deal of enjoyment from sharing my work. Anytime you can honor your elders and celebrate the young people in life with pretty papers it is a good thing!
What are your thoughts on scrapbooking? The paper crafting and especially the scrapbooking industry has weathered a few storms over the years, with many store fronts closing and online stores seeing great success. I am a fan of both options, but there is nothing like seeing product in person and being able to feel the quality of the supplies. I see a new passion for all things paper related. I myself am quickly falling for the latest life planner trend. I recently purchased one and I’m enjoying the best of both worlds...being organized and crafty.

Design or technique? I love looking for the perfect colors and designs to showcase the event I am scrapbooking. When I am starting a new layout or series of layouts I go through my supplies and gather everything that may work together. Having everything visible allows me to be inspired by my choices.
