In 2006, I created a year-long album kit club called "Remember Me" for SG customers here in Springfield. The idea was to create an entire album about the person who usually gets the least coverage in a scrapbook -- yourself. Early on, many of the club members learned a hard lesson. They had few photos of themselves. It was an eye-opener, and something they set about correcting. Over the course of the year, we hosted a couple of Sunday afternoon get-togethers so that we could all see the progress others were making on their albums. It was thrilling to see the pages, and to hear how happy people were about what they were accomplishing. The idea of making an album about yourself is nothing new. And none of the topics I used were earth-shakingly original. So why bother? Because seeing all the creative design ideas and researching all the cool topics does absolutely no good if you don't actually DO something with them. When we did "Remember Me" all those years ago, I fully intended to create an album along with everyone else. I even had grand ideas about doing more than the 12 layouts! But I didn't do even one. I never felt like I had enough time. I DID strongly encourage my mother to complete her album, and she did, with some help from my sister Karin and I. I can't tell you how glad I am that she made all those layouts about herself. Her "Remember Me" album is something Karin and I treasure. For National Scrapbook Day the first of this month, we hosted a six-day “Remember Me” challenge on the SG blog. For six days, I shared a topic (and an alternate), either fact-based or feeling-based. I posted my layout (like the one on this page), and provided a free sketch to download, plus ideas for photos and journaling. If you missed out, you can still join in by starting with the April 27 blog post (NSD
Challenge, Day One...Remember Me) at scrapbookgeneration.com. Of all the things we’ve done as a business recently, this elicited the most positive response. Everyone who called or emailed or stopped by was so appreciative and so enthusiastic about “Remember Me.” I think no matter what age we are or what our circumstances, we long to be good memories for the ones we will leave behind. Completing my six layouts for the challenge gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. I documented some things that I had been thinking about for years. This month, I challenge you to create a layout (or six!) about yourself. Do it for others, but most of all, do it for yourself.

GIFT BAG: Cut and layer patterned papers and cardstock and adhere to bag front. Adhere film reel and film strip ribbon to bag. Adhere sentiment stickers to bag. Layer and adhere stickers, sequins and small embellishments around bag. Dye ribbon and tie to the bag handle. CARD: To make a clapperboard card, start by folding a piece of black cardstock to create the card base. Cut two additional strips of black cardstock. Cut small strips of white cardstock and adhere to black cardstock. Adhere one of the strips to the top of the card base and adhere the second strip at angle on the top of the card. Embellish card with a sentiment and stickers. SNACK CONTAINER: Cut a small container with white cardstock using a die-cut machine. Cut strips of red cardstock and adhere to container. Adhere stickers to the front. Cut a star shape from gold foam and adhere to paper straw. Adhere sticker and sequins, and fill container with popcorn. Cards in packs. Cards on sheets. Cards everywhere! They’re so cute...and definitely hard to resist. But what to do with all of them?! Do nothing and keep them plain? That works. But how about kicking them up a notch, like we asked members of the SG CREATE team to do.

Instead of leaving them plain, enhance 3x4 ‘project life’ cards with cut-outs, punches, and other accents. Don’t forget about using stamps and stitching, too.
ONE • On the green ‘project life’ card, I added a camera cut from cardstock. TWO • I added additional accents - the adventure and go cardstock. THREE • I stitched around the gold heart. FOUR • On the pink card, I placed some scalloped stickers on top of each other for a layered look. FIVE • I layered the ‘this way’ cutout over yellow arrows, then added text for the date and place. SIX • For the last card, I punched the number 3 out and layered it with photos and journal paper.

Use coordinating 3x4 cards to form a collage-style mat for a photo. Find the perfect spot for the grouping, then cluster title, journaling and embellishments for a quick and easy page.

ONE • Two cards on a cut-apart sheet worked perfectly with my photo (plaid and never grow up). TWO • Since I love layers, I found other cards with coordinating colors...blue, unforgettable, and yellow stripe. THREE • Next, I created a grouping for my photo. I wanted the plaid to be more visible, so I cut it in half so it extended above and below. FOUR • I adhered the cards with my photo on top before attaching the unit to the page. That let me move it around to find the best spot.

Try a new page formula...three cards, two photos. There are several ways to arrange this combination. Simply find the one that is the most appealing to you.
ONE • Choose three to four 3x4 or 4x6 cards for your layout, as well as a 3x4 photo and a 6x4 photo. TWO • Next, arrange photos and cards on the page, staggering them in an appealing manner. (The ‘click’ card is actually a 4x6 -- I covered half with a 3x4 photo). THREE • To make the cards stand out I used a black pen around the edges. FOUR • I layered the die-cut over a card and stitched it down. I did the same with my title. FIVE • I added stitching, and stickers with 3-D adhesive.

Fool the eye by splitting 3x4 or 4x6 cards into two pieces. Added to the top and bottom of other elements, they give the illusion that you’ve used a much larger piece of paper.

ONE • It’s easy to give the illusion of a longer strip or block of patterned paper by cutting a 3x4 card in half. TWO • Adhere the two portions to the top and the bottom of the layout, instantly creating the look of a larger piece of paper. THREE • Layer and adhere two other 3x4 or 4x6 journaling cards on the page, along with a few coordinating pieces of patterned paper, to create a colorful background for your photo.

Use a single 12x12 sheet of 3x4 cards paper as the background, journaling block, and title for a layout. It’s a time-saver and money-saver all rolled into one.
ONE • I created a layout about my daughter, and decided to use ‘project life’ type cards both as layers and as a part of a title for the page. TWO • To personalize one of the cards, I wrote her name on a ticket that I adhered to the card. THREE • Helpful tip...all the cards I used were cut from one 12x12 sheet of paper. This is a great (and frugal) way to create a layout with lots and lots of layers, without using many sheets of paper.

Use an assortment of coordinating 3x4 cards to form a grid background on your layout. Embellish the background cards with smaller cards and other fun shapes.

ONE • Get started by choosing various 3x4 and 4x6 cards to form an eye-pleasing background on your layout. TWO • Choose several fun 2x2 cards to use to build a scene on the larger background cards. THREE • Layer two of the 2x2 cards slightly off from each other and then use die-cut pieces to further decorate the card. FOUR • Fussy cut several designs and fun phrases from other coordinating cards to further embellish the background cards.

Add dimension and texture to ‘project life’ type cards by hand stitching words and shapes. Just pierce holes, choose a coordinating floss, and start stitching.
ONE • Since I love sewing so much, stitching by hand is a favorite addition of mine to ‘project life’ type cards on my layouts. TWO • Get started by placing the 3x4 or 4x6 card on a piercing mat or foam pad. THREE • Using a paper piercer, punch holes, spacing evenly all along the words or shapes you want to cover with stitching. FOUR • Split the embroidery thread into two strands, then sew over the words or letters or shapes to make them stand out and add dimension to your project. I used the card I stitched as the title block on my layout.

Make a border across the top or bottom of your layout by using combinations of 3x4 cards and photographs. It’s a neat, clean, quick technique.
ONE • I love using 3x4 or 4x6 cards because the sizes make them very simple to include on 12x12 pages. For example, I used three 3x4 cards on the left of this layout for a nice, even top border. Then I did something unique to several of the cards. TWO • First card...added an embellishment. Quick and easy. THREE • Second card...stamped small graphics on the bottom. Once the ink was dry I ran it through my typewriter for journaling. FOUR • Third card...added glossy accents to the writing and hearts. FIVE • On the right side, I squeezed another 3x4 card inbetween a 6x4 and 4x4 photo, then added star sequins.

The biggest change I made to create this layout was changing up the shape and size of the photos. I wanted to include a larger photo as my focal point so I used a 5 x 7 photo in place of the 4-inch circle photo. For the remaining photos I use small, 2 x 2 photos. Even though the photos are different shapes and sizes they still follow the same general design with a large photo surrounded by smaller, supporting photos.
Since I changed the shape and size of the photos, it really changed up the look of the layout. I decided to take the inspiration from the circle design on the sketch and incorporate it into the details of my layout. I used circles and stars across the whole page to mimic the circle design on the sketch. I love that you can take certain elements of a sketch and mix and match it to fit what you want!
I loved the “This is What Awesome Looks Like� title piece from Paper House and instantly knew that it would be the perfect title for my pictures of Super Jackson. Even though it is a little larger than the title on the sketch it worked out perfectly with the larger 5 x 7 photo I used. Because it was so large I lost the space for my journaling. I moved the journaling strips to another area on the layout.

CHANGE #4 I added some vertical strips to the background of the layout, behind the 5 x 7 photo. Adding a few background pieces is an easy way to change up the look of the sketch and add your own touches to it.

I turned the sketch into a two-page layout by flipping the design of the circles and extending it across two pages. On the right page I followed the design of the sketch (flipped) and mixed a few details around to fit the space. It may not look exactly like the sketch because of those details, but they were still inspired by the sketch. On the left page I made my own circle design to fit with the circle theme and to make it look like the circles are stretched across both pages.
I added a large (8 x 10) photo to the design. I love that picture of Drew and thought it would be fun to make it huge and then arrange the circle design around it. It does overlap both pages, and normally I wouldn’t split a photo. However, since this photo was so large I let some of the “empty” space lap over on the left page.

I added a large strip to the left of the large photo. I loved the big “soccer” on a piece of Paper House patterned paper and thought it would fit perfectly with my large photo. I cut it down to the same height as my photo to create a large photo/element block.
I chose to split my title and journaling between the two pages instead of having them together like they are on the sketch. On the left page I arranged the journaling strips to fit within the circle design. I love that about journaling strips! They are so easy to fit and form into any space. The title is on right page in the same general area as it is on the sketch.

CHANGE #1 On this layout I kept the design of the sketch roughly the same and then added my own photo block to turn this into a twopage layout. This is such an easy way to extend a one-page sketch into a two-page layout. Large photo blocks are easy to make and can be made up of so many different sizes and combinations of photos. The possibilities are endless!

For the circles on the left page I somewhat followed the sketch, but in a way simplified it. I kept the 4-inch, 3-inch, and 2-inch circle photos, but instead of adding all of the smaller details, I added a large sunburst circle to the background to support the theme of my beach layout. I still added some of the smaller details but tried to tone it down a bit so I didn’t completely cover the sunburst design.
I added a few more circle clusters around the large photo block to mimic the design of the circles on the sketch. I used a combination of photos, brads, enamel dots, die cuts, and words stickers to create the clusters.

The first thing I changed with this sketch was flipping it to work with a piece of patterned paper from Paper House. I loved the wood paper with the banner quote on it and had to find a way to make it work with this sketch. The best way I came up with was to flip the sketch and include that banner in the design.
I changed up the look of the sketch by using a different shape for the photos. They still are the same size and roughly follow the design of the sketch. There is a 4 x 4 photo, a 3 x 3 photo, and then a few supporting 2 x 2 photos. This was a great way to simplify the sketch and the circle design.

To make this one-page sketch work as a two-page layout, I took that 4 x 4 photo and extended it across both pages. I used a combination of 4 x 4 photos, a 3 x 4 photo, and a 3 x 4 card to create a long row of photos and elements.
Since I just added a single row and the photos are only 4 inches tall, that left a lot of white space on the layout. I don’t mind white space, but in this case it just looked way too plain. I added a few patterned paper strips and some stitching to the background to help give the layout more color.
I added a small cluster of stickers to the top left corner. I felt that it helped to complete the layout and tie everything together.

I extended the sketch into a twopage layout by creating a row of 6 x 4 photos across the whole layout and then arranged the design of the sketch around that row. Using mostly 6 x 4 photos is a great way to simplify the sketch!
I changed the circles into stars and arranged them to somewhat follow the sketch and to work with the long row of 6 x 4 photos. I let one of the 6 x 4 photos replace the 4-inch circle photo on the sketch and then used a 3 x 3 and a 2 x 2 photo in place of the 3-inch and 2-inch circle photos on the sketch. They aren’t really in the same placement as they are on the sketch because I changed them around to fit with the row of photos.

I added a large star to the background of the sketch. I love adding large shapes like hearts and stars to the background of layouts. It always adds an eyecatching element to the layout!
I moved the journaling strips to work with the design of stars I used. I didn’t have a lot of room near the title or below the photos. I added the journaling strips to the center “empty” part of the photos.
I added a small row of stars in the upper right corner to help balance out the star design on the page. I like to work in threes and tend to have three main embellishment areas on my layouts. On this layout I have the large red star with the 3 x 3 photo and then the blue star with the 2 x 2 photo. The small row of stars in the corner helped to complete a trio.

I always love working with double-page sketches. The sketches offer to me such endless variety, and keep my layouts fresh. I expanded the paper backgrounds on this sketch so I’d have more room to showcase the vellum doilies. I knew they would need the patterned paper to pop against. I also rearranged the photo groupings to match my photos, and then I flipped the title die-cut with the small banner grouping to also work with the photos. I really wanted my 4x6 photo on the right to be the focal point for the layout. My big grown-up boys will always be, in my heart, my little boys, and this layout was poignant to work on, as 2015 brings the first year neither one of them will be home with me for Mother’s Day. Remembering our stories and fun times together is its own gift.”

I had been busy editing photos from a trip to Disneyland when this sketch arrived in my inbox. I saw the circles and immediately thought of gears and the photos from Mater's attraction. I had a few more photos than what the sketch called for, but with a some minor tweaks, I was able to get them all in. Journaling was not really necessary for this layout so substituting a photo in that spot was an easy solution. The title had to be moved as a result of the change, but just naturally fell into place on the upper left side. Another very fun sketch to work with!�

Paper House is famous -- sort of -with many products appearing in TV and movies over the years. We’ve been on the silver screen in Nightcrawler (2014), Fame (2009), 88 Minutes (2007), Runaway Jury (2003), and on TV episodes of True Blood, House, The Mentalist and more!
Building things is one of our fortes. Most of our tradeshow booths are built out of unexpected and super customizable materials. At CHA 2015, we used lots of PVC pipes to build our booth, and in the past we’ve had booths made entirely out of cardboard and boxes (which were recycled after the show). Every year we assemble an amazing design team made up of talented crafters from around the world. Their work can be seen daily at www.paperhouseblog.com. We take applications each November, so keep an eye out for how to join us.

We love our pets! Almost all of us have one (or two or 3…) furry friends at home, many of which have been photographed for our stationery line. We’d totally have an office cat if it weren’t for allergies! We even used to have an office guinea pig named Fred P. House as our official mascot. He was slightly overweight and rescued from a second grade classroom.

Our headquarters is in New York's Hudson Valley. Along with being beautiful, our area is full of creativity and originality. The Hudson Valley has more artists per capita than anywhere else in the country! At Paper

Several times a year we close up shop and embark on community service days. So far we have volunteered multiple times for a local Habitat for Humanity project and also Deliver the Difference, which provides food to those in need within our community.

Note: I got the plain black circles as the ‘in between’ circles when diecutting the Stitched Circle Frames all at the same time.” WHY SHE LIKES MY FAVORITE THINGS DIES: “I love the absolutely endless possibilities you can achieve when you use the simplest of dies in innovative ways. The MFT Die-Namics dies cut so precisely. They are awesome for inlaid die-cutting...my favorite. I die cut the Proof Positive Cover Up from white cardstock and then die cut it a second time with various blue cardstock colors. I absolutely loved this journaling challenge! Every year since my early thirties I’ve created a single page layout called ‘Me At...’ whatever age I am at the time. This year I turned 43 on April 3rd so this was a perfect challenge. I always list 10 items I’m into at that moment and or goals for the next year. This ‘selfie’ was taken on my birthday in the car (at a stop light) so the lighting wasn’t great as you can see from the photo on the layout, but this isn’t about perfection. It’s about reality.”

“I chose to use the tag sketch to build the embellishment for my bag. I stayed pretty close to the tag sketch as it was very versatile, but I chose to use crepe paper and die-cut pieces to form my strips. A tag with a rosette and bow took the place of the flower and I moved my word to the bottom of my patterned paper group. A simple wrapping of twine finished up my bag.�

I layered the strips of paper similar to the sketch, but used basic strips of paper instead of banner pieces. I clustered the butterflies similar to the daisies in the sketch, but flipped them to the opposite side of where they are in the sketch.�

“Creating vacation layouts can be rough, trying to pick and choose which photos are the best to highlight. So I used the May sketch for this assignment, I couldn’t resist…I love that sketch! I layered six pictures in two rows, which allowed me to have nine 4x4 pictures on a single layout. They are fun to flip through while looking at the layout. TIP: When I get the layout in the plastic sheet protectors I cut long small slits around the outside of the photo rows on the layout so you can flip the pictures without taking the layout out of the sheet protectors.”

Meet Nicole Bingaman, a 31-year-old stay-at-home-mom in Henderson, Nevada. She has agreed to give us an inside look at how scrapbooking impacts her life.
How and when did you get started scrapbooking? I met my now mother-in-law when I was in high school and she scrapbooked. She made me an album for graduation and our wedding a few months later. I started soon after we bought our first house in 2002. I would say over the years I was buying more and not scrapping very much until around 2011 when I stopped shopping and started to really focus on what I loved and wanted to use. Adding a kit subscription to the mix really increased my production as well.
Advice for finding more time to scrapbook? My advice for carving out time to scrapbook would be to make it known to your family that having a portion of time dedicated to allowing yourself some creative time is important. I have been in the habit of getting both of the kids down for naps at the same time and that allows me a small chunk of time to myself.
Time spent scrapbooking? My scrappy time varies a lot. I go through spurts where I will scrapbook a few days a week for one-two hours while my kids nap. And then I will go a few weeks with no scrappy time if I am busy running around with my kids. I also teach classes at my local store, so some of my crafty time is spent prepping kits for classes.

What is your scrap space like? When I was pregnant with my oldest, I moved my scrapbook stuff out of a spare bedroom and into our formal dining room. It has worked well for the most part, but now that I have a two and a three-and-a-half year old, not having a door to my space has really effected how and when I can scrapbook. I do like being out in the main part of our home and love that I have the space for filming process videos as well. I have moved things around when I find that the way something has been organized just is not working for me. I now try to keep things that I reach for the most close to my desk and tuck away things that I don't use often. I have also learned to keep things like scissors and Copic markers FAR from reach of little hands.
What are your best organizational tips? Organization is one of those things that I find is never complete. I think as my style and interests change, the way I want my supplies stored changes as well. I have purged a lot of supplies that I was not using or just no longer loved. I didn't have regrets after selling most of it and now shop and store things based on how I personally use supplies and plan projects.
How do you describe your style? My style is paper-heavy linear with lots of photos and a medium level of embellishment. I love the look of computer-printed journaling and love adding it to journaling spots and die-cuts. When I discovered SG's kits and sketches it was like I found heaven. I know that I take way too many photos, so I try to fit as many as I can in a double-page spread. I am a big advocate for doing what YOU like and not getting caught up in the current trend, especially if it's something I do not care for. My albums are for me and my family to enjoy, so I want to be happy with the results years from now.
Do you have a set budget for scrapbooking? I do not have a set budget for scrappy spending each month. I am currently subscribed to Scrapbook Generation’s Boy Crazy, Girl Crazy and Super Sketch Club kits. That is the bulk of my monthly spending. If a collection comes out that I love, I will usually go ahead and purchase it (with the Bank It option at Scrapbook Generation) and anything else I see. But with that said, I do try to spend as little as possible each month and keep an eye on our total monthly bills.

Social aspect?
I am part of a semi-private online forum that has changed my crafty life in many ways. Without this outlet, I would not scrapbook as often, and wouldn’t have a way to chat with other women in this hobby. I don’t have the ability to attend local crops, so the online community is my way of having a similar experience. I love the online crops we have a few times a year, complete with challenges and games.

Where do you get your inspiration? I enjoy finding inspiration from other scrapbookers with similar styles to my own. Since I love SG sketches and kits, I love finding inspiration in CREATE magazine. I also love to watch YouTube process videos from Jen Gallacher and Nichol Magouirk. Even their older videos and older styles I still find inspiration from and will often scraplift pages that I love and want to try techniques from. It's from all the scrapbookers I subscribe to on YouTube that pushed me to create my own channel and share a peek into what I do.
What do you enjoy most...design or techniques? Technique...and this is probably because I am a bit of a nerd. I LOVE opening my SG kits and just following the directions. Then I will usually add a small something to the finished layout like stamping or diecutting. When I am not following a sketch or completing a kit, I like to
try things I have seen in videos -- new ways to use digital die cuts, stretching your stamps, etc. Nothing messy though!
What does this hobby mean to your life? Scrapbooking allows me a way to unwind from stress, share memories with my family and connect to other scrapbookers online.

What are your thoughts on scrapbooking? I love so much about this hobby and feel like I am now in a comfortable place where I know what I like and what I will use. I no longer feel the need to purchase everything I see or go with what the current trends are. I use what I love and make what I like for MY albums and MY family.
