Free ice water. Free scrapbook layout sketches. Beyond the word “free,” what could those two things have in common? Until a couple of weeks ago, I would have given you a blank stare. Not a clue. But now I know. I just returned from that quintessential American road trip, looping through South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore and heading west to Yellowstone National Park. When I visit new places, I like to know a bit about the area. That means grabbing a couple of travel books and studying up, so that as navigator, I make sure my husband doesn’t miss veering off our scheduled path for something exciting, like say, the world’s largest ball of twine. He does NOT share my keen sense of spontaneous adventure, but that’s another story. Study time was in scarce supply before this latest trip, but I did skim some articles before we left. I knew just enough to be dangerous! After several breathtaking hours in The Badlands, we headed toward Wall, the South Dakota town that is home to Wall Drug, an American travel icon. I saw that the books I’d skimmed were right. There really ARE six zillion roadside signs advertising Wall Drug! Fast forward. We’re in the Wall Drug restaurant. I’m sitting in front of my Fifties childhood dream meal. A hot beef sandwich. Bread, roast beef, mashed potatoes, with every speck covered in gravy. After I had done everything but lick the plate, I picked up one of the brochures on the table and started reading the story of Wall Drug. Before long, I found myself tearing up. In 1931, pharmacist Ted Hustead and his wife Dorothy purchased a drugstore in Wall, a town with 326 people. They gave themselves five years to build a thriving business. If they failed, they would move on. Nearing the end of the five years, failure

was imminent. All the potential customers were speeding by on the highway. NOT stopping at Wall Drug. Dorothy had an idea. It was just a little idea. Nothing big. Give away free ice water and let people know via signs along the highway. The rest, as they say, is history. And I can relate, because Scrapbook Generation had its own moment of imminent failure. In 2006, a little over a year after we opened, our booming business changed direction. Sales on Saturdays dropped dramatically. I felt like I was always hunched over a calculator trying to figure out how to pay the bills, and worrying about having to close the store. We tried everything we could think of. Nothing seemed to help. Then I had an idea. It was just a little idea. Nothing big. Give away free sketches and hold free classes. Soon, 40-50 scrapbookers were at SG most Saturdays, happily crafting away with those first basic sketches we made. Of course, Scrapbook Generation isn’t iconic Wall Drug. But we have something in common. I know how worried Dorothy was, because I’ve been there. And I know how the littlest of ideas -- nothing big -- can sometimes be all you need to turn things around. Seventy-eight years later, Wall Drug is still giving away free ice water, a nod to Dorothy’s little idea that became so very, very big. I think she would like that.

• Box card: Create a pop-up card using a die-cut machine or template. Cover with patterned paper. Decorate card with cut out paper flowers, stickers, and die-cuts. • Gift bag: Create a gift bag using a punch board. Decorate bag with patterned paper. Layer embellishments. Fold down top of bag and punch border along edge. Punch holes through bag. Pull ribbon through and tie a bow to finish the bag. • Banner: Cover banner pieces with patterned paper. Create rosettes by fan-folding strips of paper and adhering together. Decorate banner with embellishments. Adhere a stitched paper garland to hang the banner with.

It started out as a wrapping product in bakeries. But that was before scrapbookers discovered this candycane striped goodness. Check out the yummy twine-worthy techniques our trio of designers has come up with to make the most of this simple product.

Use pom poms to create a festive embellishment. To make a pom pom, wrap twine 20-30 times (depending on how full you want it) around a ruler. Pull off and tie a knot around the center of twine. Then simply use scissors to snip off the ends of the twine.

Create your own handmade embellishments by drawing a basic pattern onto cardstock. Fill in the design with liquid adhesive. Lay the twine into adhesive, filling in the shape. Let dry and cut out the design.

Create a fun and decorative twine border by simply threading sequins onto twine and then adhering to the project.

Make rosettes with bakers twine. Punch out circles, then cover with adhesive. Wrap twine in a circular shape, starting at the center.

Use the negative space left after punching or diecutting. Back the area with bakers twine to add dimension.

Liven up a printed pocket-page card or tag by running a thin line of liquid adhesive around the outline of the shapes. Gently place the twine over the adhesive.

Make flowers out of twine pom poms by smashing them and adding an enamel dot or brad to the center. Add a stitched stem and some leaves to complete the flowers.

Create a background by wrapping a variety of different colors of baker's twine around a card.

Wrap baker's twine around layered squares to create a birthday present. You can also loop the twine around a circle for a birthday bow.

I flipped the sketch to fit the design idea I had. I really wanted to create a sunburst for the background and the idea I had fit better with a horizontal background strip than a vertical one.

I added more background pieces behind the original background piece on the sketch. Adding larger backgrounds when you have a sketch with a lot of white space is a great way to add in more color and more patterns.

I used one 5x7 photo in place of the two 3x5 photos on the sketch. Replacing multiple, smaller photos with one larger photo is an easy fix to any sketch that has more photos than you want to use. Maybe you have less pictures or you just simply want to have one large focal photo. Since I flipped the sketch, my embellishment clusters changed a little. I tried to keep them in the same general area as they are on the sketch.

On the left page I mostly followed the sketch as it is, but on the right I created a design that would work with the pocket-page-type page protector. This is such a great way to use one-page sketches if you like to use the divided page protectors in your scrapbooking, too. It's also a great way to add a lot more photos to a one-page sketch! With my layout it gave me the opportunity to add a lot of small photos of the notes my boys write me all the time.

I used two 4x6 photos in place of the two 3x5 photos on the sketch. There is plenty of room on the sketch to use larger photos without having to make major adjustments to the design.

I used a slightly larger background strip since I used larger photos. This was an easy adjustment to accommodate the larger photos. Since the photos expanded by an inch I added an extra inch to the background paper. I only did this to keep the general design proportions the same.

I simplified the embellishment clusters by just using a strip of paper in place of the small circles and then large hearts in place of the rest.

I added a few extra, small strips to the background piece. Because I simplified the embellishments and used a neutral paper for the background, I just felt that area could use some more color.

I wanted to use more photos so I extended the sketch to fit over two pages. I did this by flipping the background and stretching it. I also broke up the background into smaller strips, an easy way to include more colors and patterns on a layout!

I kept the photos the same orientation as on the sketch even though I flipped the background. A vertical arrangement fit better with my photos. I kept the two photos on the sketch pretty much in the same arrangement as on the sketch and then added four more of the same size across the layout. Then I added a couple of smaller photos below those.

I also flipped the embellishment clusters to work with the design I had. They basically flipped just like the background. I used flourishes and splashes of patterned paper in place of the circles on the sketch.

The background and embellishments flipped together while the pictures and the title and journaling stayed the same. The title is above the photos while the journaling is in the same general placement as it is on the sketch.

I added extra strips to the top and bottom of my layout. With the large amount of white space and the bright white cardstock background, I felt like it really need something to break that up a little. A few simple strips was an easy solution!

I had more photos to include so I extended the one-page sketch to fit two pages. I decided to make the background smaller in width (3" instead of 5-1/2") and length (10" instead of 12") and repeat it across the page. Another great way to use more colors and patterns!

I used one large photo in place of the two 3x5 photos. I took the combined width of both photos (6") and the length of the photos (5") to create one 6x5 photo. It's fun to use unconventional sizes at times. In this case I kept the same photo size as the sketch but got a completely different look.

I added a large photo block that fits within the design of the sketch, a super easy way to extend a one-page sketch into a two-page layout. For this layout I created a photo block that had the same height (5") as the photos on the original sketch and then stretched it across the two pages.

While I did keep the title at the top of the photos, I had to find a new home for my journaling. The space below the photos was limited, so I just added a spot for my journaling within the photo block.

Even though the layout design was stretched, I tried to keep the embellishment clusters in the same general area as they are on the sketch. They have been simplified to fit with the design of my layout.

I created a two-page layout based on the one-page sketch by simply keeping the one-page design on one page and covering the other page with photos. The left page has the design of the sketch while the right is photos only.

I moved the design of the sketch over to the edge of the left page and added two 4x6 photos to the left. I tried to keep the same general design as the one-page sketch with the same photos, title and journaling placement, and embellishment clusters, but I moved it over so I could add more photos and tie it in with the right page.

I added a few extra strips on the sides of the background. I kept the background the same size as the sketch suggests and I needed a little extra width on it to fill in some space so that the 3x5 photos didn't overlap onto the other photos or over onto the second page. Instead of making the background bigger, I opted instead to add more strips. Again, this was another attempt to add in more color and more patterns.

While I did use circles for the embellishments, I didn't get as detailed as the clusters on the sketch. I used larger circles and less of them. I also used mist in place of the smaller circles on the sketch. I figured the messy mist would fit with the rock star theme of the page!

It’s a constant wish. More time in each day! But since we know that’s not going to happen, fortunately there are ways to save time when scrapbooking. Sometimes I like to get a layout done quickly. At other times, I like to enjoy the process more. But for me, it’s always all about time.

THE ONE-HOUR LAYOUT

HOW IT WORKS FOR ME... My first step is to choose a sketch. To me, the fun of working with a sketch is when I find one that “speaks” to me! My mind starts spinning with all the possibilities and I can’t wait to get going! While I usually have photos already printed out, since this was a compare/contrast layout of photos 40 years apart, I printed the black and white photos in specific sizes. I love the technology that lets us scan old photos and enlarge them with what I consider fantastic results. My biggest time saver? Choosing to work within one paper collection, like the Pink Paislee “Switchboard” group I used for this layout.

THE THREE-HOUR LAYOUT

HOW I SPENT MY TIME... Identical papers, identical photos, but a huge difference in time spent crafting. Much of the time was spent selecting coordinating items and tools. I used accent stitching on a couple of journaling cards, added glitter glue swirls over patterned paper, and inked a wooden word. I also designed my own title grouping of stickers, chipboard letters, and word strips. Because the pre-made telephones fit the theme so well, I mixed them in with my handmade embellishments. I loved the gold touches in this collection, so I stamped and heat-embossed gold hearts and numbers. Heat embossing is an easy technique that provides a huge impact!

DEBBIE’S TIP #1 Mistakes are okay! I originally intended to hand-stitch a swirly line found on one of the patterned papers in the collection. I cut a strip and used it as a pattern, then discovered after I had punched all the stitching holes that the design was too intricate and I was tearing the paper! My solution? I cut another strip of the same design and covered the holes, then used Stickles glitter glue to accent the swirls.

DEBBIE’S TIP #2 If you’ve never done heat embossing, give it a try! To me, it’s one of the easiest “difficultlooking” techniques around! All you need are the stamps I bet you already have, embossing ink (I like the tinted ones so you can see what you are doing), embossing powder, and a heat gun. Stamp, pour on the powder, shake off the excess, heat...done!

DEBBIE’S TIP #3 Look for items in the collections -especially title and journaling cards -- that have simple shapes or words that you can accent by hand-stitching (or by outlining with glitter glue). Do the stitching first, so that you have plenty of area to hold on to. Then, cut out the shape like this.

Patterned paper? Yes, please! The colors, designs, and varieties draw me in. I am a patterned paper lover. I use it, the more the better! Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be scared to mix it up with patterned paper in crafting projects...it adds to the feel, dimension, and overall look.

• LET’S EXPLORE A FEW WAYS TO USE PATTERNED PAPER. Mary Ann Jenkins (www.maryannjenkins.com) has a fantastic layout using minimal patterned paper. The white cardstock mounted on the vivid patterned paper background makes the center of the layout the focal point. She also kept patterns and colors to a minimum, which works well.

â&#x20AC;˘ THE BOLDER THE BETTER. For a layout with impact, select a bold background, like in the layout below. The stripes and the starkness of black and white combine well. Tone things down by choosing patterned paper in softer colors. This draws attention back to the photo, but still creates impact power. Notice that most of the patterns in the triangles are smaller and softer, to offset the bold background.

Who says you can’t go a little wild? Themed patterned paper can bring fun to most any topic.

• LOVE THAT PAPER? GO FOR IT! Themed patterned can add fun and quirkiness to layouts. I love my Nikon, so this collection from Bella Blvd was perfect to use for a photo of my camera. Black and white color combos are good “grounding” papers to use for a break in all the visual “chaos.” I used the black patterned paper as a stopping point and a place for my title.

• PATTERNS OF THE WORLD, UNITE! On this layout, I just went wild with patterned paper. At first, I thought I had gone a little too far, but then everything just clicked. I have found that it helps to have white borders around your photos when working with bright, loud patterns. You can always mimic this look with white cardstock. I also created resting space around the photos.

TIPS FOR WORKING WITH PATTERNED PAPER

1. Stay within one collection. Colors are already coordinated for you, and embellishments are usually included, so this makes it easy to play. 2. Start with just a few colors. This will give you play room, but you won’t feel overwhelmed with choices.

3. When using bold patterns, try small doses or mix a lot of softer patterns with them.

4. Move paper around until YOU like it. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, and all those design rulers are just begging to be broken! You know the styles you are drawn to, so start there. 5. Have fun...it’s only paper!

Paper bags are an easy way to create a fun mini-album! • Create an album by stacking three paper bags on top of each other. Stitch a line up the center of the album to create a sturdy binding. Fold the bags in half to create the album, then punch holes along the binding edge and lace up with ribbon. • Decorate each page with a variety of embellishments, such as flowers, spray ink, die-cuts, and stickers. • Adhere photos, journaling, and additional embellishments. • Adhere pages to paper bag album. • Create several pockets in the album for additional photos.

Riley turns two...cowboy style!

An April birthday party for two-year-old Riley Key was the focus for months of papercrafting preparation by his mother, Tasha Key. We asked Tasha to share her ideas, methods, and the results of that special day with CREATE readers.

Q: Why did you choose a Western theme? hen I came across the boot cut from svgcuts.com, that planted the seed. Then seeing the cute cowboy- and westernthemed parties on Pinterest with activities I could easily recreate -- that would have something for everyone -- sealed the deal. Funny thing is we ended up renting space at a local park that had a huge fort play structure. It tied into our theme and we decided to use that instead of planning out games.

Q: How long before the event did you start papercrafting?

our months out. It was pretty much the perfect time to start. Extra time is great when you might want to change up a few things as you go along. Added bonus is that since I didn't want to change up much I wasn't stressed at the last minute. Things were done and I could focus on food.

Q: Where did you get ideas for the items and how difficult were the preparations?

he silverware holders and invitations were the easiest. It was mainly cutting and adhering, with a little stamping on the rope diecuts to give it texture, and stamping the silverware on some punched circles. They basically fell in place. I can't ask for anything better when making so many items. The banner would be next. It wasn't hard to make, thanks to Silhouette software allowing me to layer items to figure out what it would look like before actually making it. It's easy to tweak a design using the software without actually making several attempts at it. The great thing is you really don't have to have a Silhouette machine to make it, just use the software to figure out your layers and cut by hand or with a different machine using your measurements. But gluing those rosettes took forever! The wooden items were made by my husband and just finished by me. The watering hole sign idea came from Pinterest. The rest were just items we came up with. The rope name was surprisingly easy to make and made a great visual impact! Immediately after seeing the boot cut I knew it would be the perfect unique treat bag, but they were hard. Not really to figure out, but the time it took to make each one was a little insane. I had to make it worse by doing extra stamping and die-cutting with the tags on each one. I can't complain much though, because they turned out adorable!

Q: Did the decorations turn out the way you envisioned them?

hey actually did! I'm a planner and had sketches done of the tables and pieces to go around them. I knew it should at least be close to what I had envisioned.

Q: What about the actual party? Any good stories?

he bandshell we rented at a park gave us a wooden backdrop for the food tables.It was perfect thanks to the huge fort play structure and no clean up from people going through our house. It was so very windy! The gusts were 38 mph. We had to come up with some creative ideas to get pictures of everything set up. The boots were very light, even with the goodies in them, so we sent the kids on a rock-hunting mission to give them some weight. A couple of our nieces were under a table at one point to hold down the tablecloth. Thankfully, it did calm down just long enough so they could come out, and I got my picture!

Q: How did the birthday boy react to his party and the decorations? e didn’t care! Since he’s two I’ll give him a pass this year!

Q: Why was this such an important event for you? iley was a very hard-fought-for little boy. I had some health problems and we are extremely lucky and grateful to have him here. Each year is a celebration of the child we never thought we would have.

Q: Would you spend this much time on party decor again? es! I think I’ll steer clear of complicated handmade treat bags, but overall I plan to do something like this each year until Riley tells me to stop.

"Ever had trouble finding the right paper? This was one of those times for me. Nothing seemed to work with what I was imagining for this story. I wanted to use colours of the Lego we saw at the exhibition, bright and happy colours, and this palette was perfect. So I used gelato watercolours and painted the cardstock! I am not much for mixed media, as I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a lot of confidence that the paint brush will obey my commands the way a trimmer and glue will, but this was extremely simple stuff. I scribbled yellow around the edges, added a hint of blue and orange and painted over it with a water brush (no mess), then used mist to splatter colours in a diagonal, to give the page movement and energy (like my son on this particular day!). I added a few trimmed down 6x6 pieces of paper, and trimmed the photo to make it smaller than the papers. I used a whole lot of stickers and die-cuts. The SG store is full of great packets of ephemera and sheets of stickers, so I mixed up lots of different stickers, some puffy and some flat, and I absolutely love this result. I put the journaling on a hidden tag under the photo. I think I need to try getting artsy with watercolours again, as it turned out perfectly imperfect and I love it!"

“A lot of my pages are about my kids and their cousins. It is a topic I never tire of photographing, scrapbooking and writing about. This heart-filled sketch was begging to be used for a story of love and friendship. I moved the twine tie below the hearts, and switched it for seam binding ribbon, which felt warm and friendly and reminded me of the little yellow chicks we are holding. Most of the kids aren’t looking at the camera, but I think that sometimes imperfect photos, like this one, are just as meaningful to a story as a perfect one. The clothes they are wearing (the youngest two are both loving ballerina skirts and wear them often); the hats they all wear as it was a very sunny day; the way the girls were so fascinated by the chicks that they are almost all looking at the chicks instead of the photographer; it all speaks to the story of our day together.”

“The most obvious change I made from the tag sketch was to orient the card horizontally rather than vertically. “I love tags, but I really like to make them with a specific purpose in mind, so I decided to make the tag within a layout. This layout uses a photo that I love. It captures one of those little secret moments children share. An everyday bonding moment, one of the many connections that result in a lifelong friendship. The tag is detailed and embellished, so I gave it ‘room to breathe’ by leaving white space around it. The title was fun to create. I used puffy paint (the kind in the art store kid’s section) and a transparency. After writing on the transparency with a Sharpie pen, I used puffy paint over the word and left it to dry completely. The paint peeled off easily, and I used a glue runner to stick it onto the page. The banners were cut from a 6x6 paper pad. This is a fabulous way to use those spare pads, and this is the kind of sketch where it’s fun to have a lot of patterns at your fingertips! Overall, this sketch was a terrific one for using my stash, with lots of little elements and details.”
