a letter from the editor

I’m lucky -- blessed, actually -- to have two real-life scrapbooking buddies. I was the first of our trio to scrapbook, starting back in 1997 when Allison was a junior in high school. A few years later, and before my family had opened Scrapbook Generation, Hazel asked me to show her how to scrapbook. For several months, we met once a week at my house, and it didn’t take long for her to be hooked. Judy was a later convert, and I can explain in one word...grandchildren! We enjoy -- love, actually -- going to weekend retreats. With busy lives, it’s often the only time we get to stop the world and have time just for ourselves. We talk, laugh, eat, and scrapbook. Rinse and repeat! They both are pretty serious about getting things done during these twice-a-year-weekends. We don’t do a lot of chatting during the scrapbooking time, because both of them usually get so focused on completing pages that they barely look up until midnight or later. Based on online forums I’m in, I know that I have it good! For whatever reason, not everyone has someone to scrapbook with in person. Yet the desire to do so is so strong that people connect through forums, often becoming so attached that they set up real-life meetings. Ladies from one forum have met in St. Louis, and have a retreat coming up in Texas this spring. One Australian member even came to the U.S. last summer and did a cross-country tour to meet other forum members! Friends are wonderful. Scrapbooking friends are out-of-this-world! Who else can share -- and understand -- this passion for telling the stories of our lives? I will continue to be thrilled that Hazel and Judy are always up for a scrapbooking road trip. Making memories while preserving memories. Not a bad deal at all.

GIFT BAG: Adhere patterned paper and border sticker across bag. Punch banner shapes from patterned paper and adhere to bag. Adhere doily to bag. Die-cut circle from patterned paper, add faux stitch lines around edge and adhere to bag. Attach scallop, sentiment, balloon and robot stickers to bag with pop dots. Adhere twine and enamel dots to bag. Add small paper clip and tie a bow around handle. Dry emboss a strip of cardstock, cut into banner shape and adhere to bag. Attach label and present stickers to bag with pop dots. CARD: Cut cardstock to create card base. Dry emboss cardstock and adhere to card. Cut strips of patterned paper and adhere. Attach note paper and circle die-cuts to card. Adhere note sticker to card with pop dots. Adhere robot and star stickers with pop dots. Add sentiment banner stickers and enamel dots to card. Draw faux stitch lines around note paper die-cut. PARTY HAT: Cut party hat shape on die-cut machine from cardstock. Adhere patterned paper to inside of hat. Use a white pen to add dots and faux stitch lines around stars; assemble hat. Punch circles from patterned paper and adhere to hat. Cut strip of patterned paper and then cut small slits in the paper, roll strip and insert into the tip of the hat. Spread out paper to make a paper pom-pom for hat. Staple ball trim to bottom edge. Die cut circle from patterned paper, die cut rosette from cardstock, adhere together and attach to hat. Adhere banner and robot stickers to hat. Add star stickers with pop dots. Raw. Naked. However you describe plain old gray chipboard, it definitely needs some attention to look its top-notch best! Use chipboard simply with inks or paints or papers, or kick it up a notch, like we asked members of the SG CREATE team to do.

Transforming chipboard with chalkboard paint is a natural. Chipboard also takes well to heat embossing, using the same ink-powder-heat formula as other projects.

ONE • For the title words, I painted raw chipboard with black chalkboard paint. TWO • Two coats may be needed. Let dry before adhering to layout. THREE • The chipboard swirl was a large corner piece which I cut it into two pieces, one for each photo. FOUR • I Inked each piece of raw chipboard with a Versamark Watermark Stamp Pad. FIVE • I applied white embossing powder to the inked chipboard. SIX • The last step is to heat emboss with a heat gun.

Creating a textured, metallic look can be done with a combination of gesso, mists, and embossing powders. Using two colors of mists adds another layer of interest.

ONE • I covered the entire chipboard frame with gesso and let it dry. TWO • I misted some Prima Color Bloom spray over the frame and let it dry. THREE • Next I applied gel medium to the frame and sprinkled embossing powder in two colors randomly onto the chipboard frame. FOUR • I melted the embossing powder with a heat gun. FIVE • Last, I applied a thin layer of gesso around the edges of the chipboard frame.

Creating a custom shape for a layout scene is a perfect use for chipboard. Stitching through the middle of the chipboard adds an entirely different texture to the piece.

I wanted to create a 3D version of the tree fort railing to build a scene. I used this process. ONE • Cut chipboard using a craft knife to create a custom shape. TWO • Cover chipboard with patterned paper by tracing the shape on the paper. Cut the paper; attach with glue. THREE • Thread raffia (or string) through a sewing needle and stitch through middle of the chipboard. Stitching through the chipboard versus gluing the raffia to the top or bottom adds extra dimension.

Taking raw chipboard from rough and blah to shimmery and shiny can be done in just a few steps. And a few jewels can add another layer of sparkle and glitz.

ONE • I started with a large raw chipboard circle, and painted it with Tattered Angels High Impact Paint in white and let dry. TWO • I covered the chipboard again with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze in Icicle and let dry. THREE • Last, I covered the entire circle with Chandelier Glimmer Glam from Tattered Angels.

Using distress inks over chipboard pieces that have been heat-embossed first in off-white shades is a way to add vintage style to a project.

ONE • The upper window was inked with VersaMark; and heat embossed with vanilla white powder for a vintage look. TWO • I added Tea Dye distress ink over the surface. I added natural pearls over the window arch and framed patterned paper with a bird. THREE • The lower shades were heat embossed over the square frame with the same technique, minus the embossing. I just inked them a bit with the Tea Dye ink. FOUR • Title circle was heat embossed with vanilla white powder. I added a second layer of VersaMark ink over the embossed surface and heat embossed with Primary Red powder. As the coverage was not total I got a two-toned title with red that pops and white that makes it a bit muted.

Creating a three-dimensional scene is yet another use for raw chipboard. Simple shapes like this petite row of houses can make a dramatic display.

ONE • Select an "off the page" chipboard product like this cluster of houses. TWO • Use a light-weight paper like tissue paper, deli paper, or vellum. Apply matte medium (or clear liquid glue) on the chipboard and lay them onto the paper. Let dry before cutting the pieces and assembling. THREE • I used craft glue to hold the chipboard together. Rubber-bands held the parts tight until the glue dried. FOUR • Paint the accessory parts a contrasting colour (I used white) and then attach with craft glue. (Painting small pieces is easier while they are still in the bigger chipboard sheet.) Once they were on the houses I filled the "panes" of the windows with glue and sprinkled with glass glitter.

Using a ‘background’ stamp on narrow surfaces like these flower stems gives the chipboard an entirely new dimension, and glitter adds a little sparkle.

ONE • I used a decorative floral layered chipboard from a local manufacturer. The first step was to paint the bottom chipboard layer. TWO • Lightly spritz with a mist spray. THREE • Dab with alcohol ink, using alcohol blending solution to lighten if necessary. FOUR • Swipe Distress Ink pad over the top. FIVE • Adhere decorative chipboard layer with double-sided adhesive tape. SIX • Sprinkle glitter onto bottom edge where adhesive tape is exposed. SEVEN • Stamp dictionary type stamp with permanent ink on the floral design. EIGHT • Add Liquid Pearl accents. NINE • Adhere pleated inked ribbon to bottom edge of chipboard.

Imprinting a stamped pattern onto a gesso-covered chipboard piece provides an inviting base for additional layers of color and texture.

ONE • Apply a decent coat of gesso to chipboard. TWO • Mist water on a rubber stamp then imprint into wet gesso. THREE • Allow gesso to dry; this can be hurried with the use of a heat gun. FOUR • Rub/apply paint or distress ink into the crevices of the stamped pattern. FIVE • Paint/rub additional paint/gelato color as desired.

Turning a chipboard album into a banner is easier than you might think. Some paint, some embellishments, and you’re ready to decorate your home.

ONE • I made a raw chipboard mini-album into a heart banner. TWO • I painted the front side with chalkboard paint -- it needed two coats -- and the back side of the album pink. THREE • I punched holes in the corners so I could run the heavy twine throughout each chipboard piece. FOUR • I decorated it with favorite embellishments and pictures.

To accommodate less pictures, I used the twopage sketch to create a one-page layout. I simply used the left side of the sketch as the inspiration for the layout.

I changed up the background pieces to fit the theme of my layout. I love finding fun ways to incorporate the theme of my layout into the design. Instead of having the three vertical background strips I used one large background piece accented with horizontal strips. I turned the green strips into grass by cutting a fringe across the top.

I added a garden of flower stickers with hand-stitched stems in place of the title and stitching on the sketch. Since I had a lot of empty space in the photo I used, I moved my title to the top of the photo, in that empty space.

CHANGE #4 I changed up the pictures a little for the one-page layout variation. The main photo I wanted to use was horizontal, so I enlarged it to a 7x5 photo and used it in place of the five photos on the left side of the sketch. It may be slightly smaller than the combined photos, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s close enough that I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to make any major adjustments to accommodate the smaller size. I also added two smaller 2x2 photos to the bottom left corner of the photo.

CHANGE #5 Since the journaling on the sketch is on the right side of the layout I had to find a new place to put my journaling. The whole left side of the picture is open space so I added the journaling in that area.

I stretched the photo block across the whole layout by using mostly 4x4 photos and including some 4x4 cards. For one of the 4x4 squares I used four 2x2 photos. This was a way to simplify the photo block and to include a few more photos than suggested on the sketch.

For the background I combined all of the background elements to create a different design. I used 3-inch banner strips across most of the page in place of all the background pieces.

Since the photo block was taller, I eliminated most of the space available for the title. I used a 4x4 card with “St. Patrick’s Day” on it and then added the word “party” below it for my title.

For the journaling I used a 4x4 card and added journaling strips to it. The journaling block is in the same general area it is on the sketch.

I added some green sequins to the stitched lines and extended the stitched lines across almost the whole length of the layout.

I really wanted to have some fun with the theme of this layout! I tried to create a layout birthday present to use in place of the large background piece. I added the three striped strips and some bakers twine to be the ribbon on the present.

In place of the smaller background strips that stretch across the page, I created candles by using small strips of patterned paper with circles and stitching for the wick and flame.

I had less pictures to use for this layout so I changed up the size of the photo block to work with my photos. I used five 3x5 photos and since the height isn’t that big of a difference from the photo block on the sketch, I didn’t have to worry about making any big adjustments.

I used a 3x5 area for my journaling. Since I used five 3x5 photos, adding another 3x5 space onto that block of photos would keep everything even and balanced. I didn’t use the whole 3x5 space for my journaling, I just used journaling strips in that space.

I followed the same design as the sketch for the background, with the exception of the smaller background strips that go across almost the whole page. I removed them and added a few extra strips to the sides of the larger background.

I used a 4x6 card for my title and in place of the 4x6 photo on the sketch. Title cards can make scrapbooking so easy! I loved the design of this Easterthemed card and thought it would fit perfectly in that space.

I used only 3x3 photos for the whole photo block. The only change was using two 3x3 photos in place of the 6x3 photo on the sketch. Using multiple smaller photos in place of one larger photo is always an easy way to include more photos on your layout.

I added a little cluster of stickers to the upper right corner of the layout. I loved the little tree branch with the bird house hanging from it! Plus it helped to fill in some of the bright white space in that area.

The biggest change I made on this layout was basically creating a whole other layout for the right page of the layout. I wanted to not only use large photos but to also simplify by using mostly 4x6 photos. The only thing that somewhat follows the sketch is including the journaling block within the photo block.

I added a few striped strips and some stitched lines to the edges of the large photo block in place of the background piece that stretched across the page.

On the left side of the layout I used the left side of the sketch and centered it on the page. The background still follows that same general design as the sketch. I did add a second background piece to the design.

For the photos on the left page I used the 4x6 photo and two 3x3 photos to create a little photo block.

Until people started commenting on my vintage childhood photos that I share from time to time on Facebook, I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have them. My dad had a pretty good camera for taking color slides, and my mom always made sure my sister and I were dressed to perfection. What wonderful memories of new Easter hats, gloves, shoes, purses...and puffy slips! In most of the sketches I’ve designed lately, I try to include an area where your own creative ideas can be included in title collages and embellishment clusters -- like the area on this sketch where journaling, title, and embellishments all claim the same space. As you’ll see on the pages that follow, members of the CREATE team each had different ideas about how to use this area to best effect. I thoroughly enjoyed using Doodlebug products on mine!”

I really loved the sketch and kept pretty close to it. I often struggle with sketches with more photos, so this one was just perfect. Instead of using one large tag I chose to use two smaller ones. This was inspired by the Crate Paper collection I used, the Open Book collection from Maggie Holmes, which came with these fun stitched tags. I definitely wanted to use those. I also replaced the row of tickets from the sketch with a few other embellishments I adored. That’s what I love about sketches, you can always adjust them to your liking.”

I loved working with this sketch! It allowed structure yet enabled versatility and creativity. Instead of using a background mat, I created a frame which was placed on top of the floral paper and vertical strips, creating dimensional interest. I love using a one-page sketch to tell a story. We love eating at this restaurant, and go there about every two weeks. We always split the same meal and never need to look at a menu. Over the years, I have picked up a collection of their drink coasters. When I saw this sketch, I envisioned putting that drink coaster on the right side and the layout just came together. I actually turned the drink coaster into a pocket and added hidden journaling behind it, and added the die-cuts around the coaster to emulate a sign. I added three 2x2 photos, expanding the story to include their actual sign, our favorite place to sit - the patio by the fireplace - and the meal we always get. We think it’s amazing and we are always up for patio time.”

I loved this sketch and to alter it a bit for my picture was super easy! My picture is a 4x4 square taken from Instagram, so the size of the picture changed from the sketch. Also, I flipped the location of the picture to the other side of the layout (mirror image) to help place the large embellishment over the picture without covering up my son. There was a lot of extra space on the other side of the picture I could cover up. I did not want to use flowers, so I used stars and other Boy Scout stickers to act as the embellishments.”

This beautiful and bright color combo instantly reminded me of pretty spring flowers, so I cut out several on my die-cutting machine and painted each one. I used black and white photos so the colors would pop. I layered the flowers under them and added lots of yellow and orange paint onto my background for more explosions of color.”

I really loved this colour challenge. First off, these are normally not colours I would have gravitated toward using. However, once I started piecing them together I found they really worked to pop my photo. It was also a great challenge because most of the embellishments I used are fully customizable. I used the Heidi Swapp MINC 12" Foil Applicator System to transform them all into the brilliant palette featured in the colour challenge. Using a colour challenge really helped me creatively, to see these shades in new ways and for future possibilities and projects.”

While it is really rare for me to start with a color palette as the genesis of a layout, I have to say that I really enjoyed this assignment. This color palette definitely felt like spring to me, so I hunted to find some photos that would be just perfect for it. And that was the easy part! I did spend more than a few hours working to make sure I was getting just the perfect shades for the palette. But, I really enjoyed the whole preparation process and loved how, when finished, I felt that the colors really picked up the energy of the photographs.â&#x20AC;?

I loved this challenge. It gave me a good change to give a big idea a try that I’ve had for a while. With my sister-in-law’s birthday the end of 2014, she wrote this beautiful little thank you note and sent it to all the family and friends on Facebook. I thought it was really nicely done, so I copied it off and printed it onto white cardstock and used it as journaling directly onto my layout. The photo she had used on the note is from the same batch of photos taken on a family shoot a couple of days before her birthday, and the photos on the layout. It all worked out really well.”

“I picked up this printer's tray forever ago, and as soon as I saw the tag sketch, I knew just how I wanted to use it. “I used the sketch to make a travel journal book cover, and as this is a cover to use, I tried to make it as flat as possible. I stayed with the card sketch ‘as is’ and added the painted grunge board spine and a piece of leather over it to look like a real book.”

MONIQUE: “I really loved this challenge. I used the tag sketch to create this ‘stt, I’m in a call’ door hanger for my husband. He works at home and is often in a conference call in which we are not allowed to disturb him. For the base of the door hanger I chose one of Doodlebug’s ‘readymade’ cards, opened it and cut a circle in it. Next I used some of their crushed velvet cardstock to make it a bit sturdier and embellished it with more Doodlebug products. I so love their bright colors. They make me happy!” IRIT: ”I used the tag sketch to make a door hanger, using the cheap kids’ foam type. The blue foam was painted with black chalkboard paint and altered for this ‘Bon Voyage’ hanger. I covered the white chipboard with blue embossing glitter to fit the already embossed stickers.”

“I used the new Bella Blvd ‘Simply Spring’ collection to create this layout. I actually created these pages separately, but by choosing the same color scheme and design, the pages seem to be made together. I chose yellow, green, and blue as my main colors and I went with a block style with a few cute embellishments thrown in for a springy feel.”

The gorgeous photos with loads of lilies worked perfectly with the theme, supported by the gorgeous lily elements I had in my stash. I used my orange lily elements to pick up on the lilies in the centre photograph and used that as my accent colour across the layout. I love how the colours work so well together; one of my favourite layouts ever made.â&#x20AC;?

“I was sharing with a friend the photo of my two 6’2" sons, walking arm in arm, and telling her how I love that they, now 20 and 19, are such good friends. The day before I was looking at that photo, the youngest sent us a text, asking if he could fly to spend the weekend with his brother on his brother’s birthday. The day after I saw this photo, the oldest changed his cover photo on Facebook to a picture of the two of them playing in the Destin sand in 2007. It warms my heart to see them develop as amazing young men, and to value their relationship and continue to connect while one is in Denver and one in Nashville. When I thought about friends, I wanted to do a collage of them over the years. In my mind, they are still that little Buzz and Woody, dressed up for Halloween and ready to go To Infinity and Beyond for candy. Brothers by birth, friends by choice. Meet Devra Hunt, the self-described COO of the Hunt family in Redmond Washington. She has agreed to give us an inside look at how scrapbooking has impacted her life.

How and when did you get started scrapbooking? I got started in 1996 after my mother-in-law showed me a Creative Memories album. I had been married a short time, had saved everything from planning my wedding, and was looking for a way to preserve it all. My wedding album was my first project. I was hooked and haven’t looked back since.

Advice for finding more time to scrapbook? We are pulled in many directions, by family, work and activities. I think it’s important to remember that it’s okay to take time for ourselves and not feel guilty. Find that time when your children can have quiet time and you can craft. Let the laundry basket sit for awhile and take the time to craft.

How much time do you spend scrapbooking?

I spend 8-10 hours a week crafting. I try to do something every day, even if it’s reading a blog article.

What is your scrap space like? My scrap space is also our guest room. I use the wall under the window, and part of the closet as my scrap space. I have a long table that sits on cabinets and drawers. In the drawers are the things I use most often: adhesive, ink, pens/pencils, sewing supplies, washi tape and small embellishments such as sequins, paper clips, resin, and flair. I keep idea books, and large tools such as a Cuttlebug, in the cabinets below the table top. A tall cabinet that houses paper sits next to the table. In the closet are a few stacked cubes where I keep unfinished projects, kits, and oversize embellishments and items I don’t use often such as stamps, paints and glitter. On them sit two spinners: one holds Thickers, the other packages of embellishments such as enamel dots, ephemera, decorative brads, stickers. I like having the table under the window. I get natural light, and can look outside while I play. The long table gives me plenty of room to spread out. I also don’t like clutter all around. I like having closed doors and drawers to keep the appearance of my space clean. I finally have it organized, in a general way that works for me, but am always tweaking little things here and there.

What are your best organizational tips? What’s important for me is to have the things I use most, the easiest to get to. Currently, I use a lot of washi tape, so that is in a drawer right next to my chair that I can easily access without getting up. I realized I like stamps, but don’t use them everyday. They don’t need to be closest to me. They are now in a drawer in the closet. I know where they are for when I want to use them.

How do you describe your style? Colorful, humorous and meaningful. I like to infuse a little bit of humor on my pages. You’ll find it in titles, and embellishments. There is meaning in every product choice I make. I use bright colors because they make me happy, and generally go with pages about boys.

Do you have a set budget for scrapbooking? No, not really. I tend to buy in spurts. I’ll buy new paper collections after they are released, then fill in with bits and pieces here and there.

Is there a social aspect to your scrapbooking? I joined the online world of crafting after a cross country move. I had left my crafty friends behind and was looking for new ones. Without the online communities, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure I would have continued scrapbooking. I am now involved in a few online challenge blogs and groups. I also take a monthly class at my LSS. Both keep me engaged in crafting, thinking of different ways to use my stash, learning, and buying lots of product!

Where do you get your inspiration? I am a member at Get It Scrapped (getitscrapped.com). I get a tremendous amount of information and inspiration from the monthly topic eZines. I also browse several challenge blogs. Sometimes, someone else’s idea will lead me to one of my own.

What do you enjoy most...design or techniques? Probably design. I like learning about design principles and how to use them effectively on a page. Scrapbook Generation sketches actually helped me learn a lot about designing pages, creating balance, and using product on my pages. I’m not much of a technique person.

What does this hobby mean to your life? Besides being a huge stress reliever, it is also my creative outlet. I get to use my creativity to re-live our photos and tell our stories, then share them with my family and friends. I can’t tell every story, but my family has something to look at that gives them a snapshot of our life.

What are your thoughts on scrapbooking? I want this industry to thrive, so I have a few thoughts. One...Print your photos. Get them off your cameras and phones. Buy product to support your favorite stores, and use those products to tell your stories. Two. Be proud of being a papercrafter. Share your work, inspire others to do the same. Three. Have fun and enjoy the process.
