FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE PROGRAM The First Year Experience Program supports and engages first-year students through a variety of services that help students connect to SFCC and be successful on campus. The student success services include New Student Orientation, First-Year Student Success Classes, expanded advising services within First Year Advising, accelerated and learning community courses and the GAME program. New Student Orientation All first-time students are expected to participate in New Student Orientation prior to the start of their first semester at SFCC. This interactive event gives students an opportunity to learn more about financial aid, campus resources, advising services and expectations. In addition, students interact with other new students, peer leaders, student ambassadors, faculty and staff to make connections on campus prior to the first day of classes, so they start their semester prepared to be successful at SFCC. Accelerated courses SFCC accelerated courses are a great way for students to move through their course sequence quickly. An accelerated course such as MATH 100X allows students to complete two sections of coursework in a single semester, improving the

chances they will complete their degree in a timely manner. Additional accelerated course pairings include English 108/109 and English 109/111. Linked Classes/Learning Community Another great option is a linked classes/learning community. These classes offer the opportunity to take a required developmental course while taking a core class. In addition, linked classes are an excellent way to build strong relationships with fellow students, as well as engage in a deeper learning experience. Research shows participating in a learning community often leads to increasing achievement (GPA) and persistence to graduation, so consider taking a linked or accelerated course this semester! Great Achievement in Men’s Education (GAME) Program The GAME program provides SFCC minority male students a place of support and growth. Participants gain skills for personal, academic and career goals in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Meetings are interactive and engaging, incorporating various activities and speakers from the college and the community, addressing real concerns and obstacles faced by men on campus. Go to the Welcome and Advising Center for more information.
