Iyengar Yoga

Developed by yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar more than 60 years ago, Iyengar yoga promotes strength, flexibility, endurance and balance through coordinated breathing and poses that require precise body alignment. Equipment like blankets, straps and blocks help the less flexible and also distinguishes Iyengar from other types of yoga. Although Iyengar incorporates the traditional postures, or asanas, that make up the broader category of hatha yoga, the props revolutionized yoga by enabling everyone—even the elderly, sick and disabled to practice. Because of its slow pace, attention to detail and use of props, Iyengar yoga can be especially good if you’re recovering from an injury. 9/20–10/25 Sun 10–11:15 am Class #: 559 Ginna Sloane, Fee: $89

LEISURE Join Santa Fe area geologist Kirt Kempter for a geologic tour and exploration of the Pacific Ring of Fire, including seven locations that reveal the dynamic nature of plate tectonics and the fascinating geologic stories of countries that border the Pacific Ocean. Register for the whole series and save! Or choose individual locations on the journey listed below. 9/14–10/26 Mon 9–10:30 am Class #: 617 Kirt Kempter, Fee: $249

Costa Rica, Central America

Our first stop on our geologic tour of the Pacific Ring of Fire will be Costa Rica. Explore the plate tectonic collision between the Cocos and Caribbean plates, resulting in frequent earthquakes and a chain of active volcanoes from Costa Rica to south ern Mexico. Costa Rica is exemplary of active geologic processes we will observe across the Ring of Fire. 9/14 Mon 9–10:30 am Class #: 606 Kirt Kempter, Fee: $49

Peru, South America

Onward to Peru for the second stop on our geologic journey. Delve into the origin of the Andes Mountains, extending from Colombia to the tip of Patagonia before looking more specifically at the geologic marvels of Peru. Included will be a discussion on the geology of Machu Picchu and the famed granite rock used to construct this spectacular city in the central Andes. 9/21 Mon 9–10:30 am Class #: 607 Kirt Kempter, Fee: $49

We depart the continent of South America to arrive on a geologic hotspot in the southeastern Pacific, Easter Island. A rising plume of magma from the mantle has created this isolated island over the past three million years, and volcanic vents and lava flows dominate the surface landscape. Explore the geology of the famous Moai statues, carved by the indigenous Rapa Nui. 9/28 Mon 9–10:30 am Class #: 608 Kirt Kempter, Fee: $49

New Zealand

Our next stop will be the south western Pacific and the marvelous geology of New Zealand. Few countries on the planet have more diverse and active geology, as recent large earthquakes and explosive volcanic eruptions testify. From glacially carved fjords to massive super volcanoes, there is never a dull geologic moment in New Zealand. 10/5 Mon 9–10:30 am Class #: 609 Kirt Kempter, Fee: $49

Australia

Perhaps the quietest geologic stop on our tour of the Pacific, Australian geology exceeds them all in the aspect of geologic time. On our visit to Australia, we will discuss the geologic history of a four billion-year old continent, including sedimentary rocks formed as iron precipitated out of ancient oceans, and some of the oldest fossilized remains of life on our planet. Geologic marvels such as Uluru and the Bungle Bungles will be impressive side trips on our journey. 10/12 Mon 9–10:30 am Class #: 610 Kirt Kempter, Fee: $49

505-428-1676 - 6 - SFCC.EDU/CE

Japan

The geology of Japan is complicated, in part due to the ongoing collision of three major tectonic plates. Large earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis are relatively common across Japan, and few countries have exploited geothermal energy to the degree of the Japanese. We will include a visit to Mt. Fuji, the iconic stratovolcano which, for the time being, stands peaceful and majestic above the growing population on the plains below. 10/19 Mon 9–10:30 am Class #: 611 Kirt Kempter, Fee: $49

Alaska

Our final stop on the Ring of Fire tour will be Alaska, providing more dynamic geology with large earthquakes and stunning volcanoes. To the west are the rumbling yet straight forward volcanoes of the Aleutian Islands, whereas southeastern Alaska is a complicated geologic mess—formed by millions of years of tectonic amalgamation of continental and oceanic crustal fragments. For geology, Alaska has it all and will be a fitting end to our geologic tour of the Pacific Ring of Fire. 10/26 Mon 9–10:30 am Class #: 612 Kirt Kempter, Fee: $49
