* ANTH 207 CULTURES OF THE SOUTHWEST (3) A study of the contemporary cultural and ethnic groups of the Southwest. Students explore the cultural and social patterns of American Indian, Hispanic and Anglo-American groups and their historical relationships. Prerequisite: ENGL 109. Offered: Occasionally. ANTH 225 PREHISTORIC PEOPLES OF THE (3) SOUTHWEST An exploration of the cultures of the prehistoric peoples of the Four Corners area and northern Mexico from the time of Paleo-Indian hunters to Pueblo farmers and the Spanish contact. The course includes lectures, readings, slide presentations and field trips to archaeological sites. Prerequisite: ENGL 109. Offered: Occasionally. Three lecture hours. ANTH 235 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION (3) An exploration of the unique relationship between communication and culture. Students examine the cultural influences in communication across ethnic and national boundaries. They focus on what happens when people from different cultures come together to share ideas, feelings and information in business, private and political arenas as well as ethical and social issues relating to intercultural communication. ANTH 248 INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF NORTH (3) AMERICA An ethno-historical survey of North American Indian cultures. Major culture areas and selected case studies examine regional indigenous cultures of North America. Three lecture hours. ANTH 250 INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF THE (3) SOUTHWEST An ethnohistorical survey of American Indian indigenous cultures of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. ANTH 252 ANTHROPOLOGY OF FOOD (3) This course explores the complex interrelationships among people, culture, society and food. Students will examine the connection between food and cultural practices from many perspectives, including historical, societal, anthropological, culinary and scientific. Prerequisite: ENGL 109. ANTH 253 ARCHEO-­‐ASTRONOMY OF THE (3) SOUTHWEST AND AMERICAS This course examines the use and practice of astronomy among ancient Native American cultures, with a particular focus on the Southwest and Mexico. The course integrates knowledge across several disciplines, primarily astronomy, anthropology, archeology and architectural history. Prerequisite: ENGL 109. Offered: Occasionally. Three lecture hours. ANTH 262 HUMAN EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY (3) A study of the basic principles of evolution applied to the human species. This class explores the principles of heredity and organic evolution, the principles and methods of biological anthropology, the evolutionary context and fossil record of primate and human emergence, the characteristics and behavior of nonhuman primates, and the origins and significance of modern human biological variation. ANTH 262L HUMAN EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY (1) LAB A practical experience in the study and analysis of ancient and modern humans in comparison with other primates. Principles of human genetics, primate identification and taxonomic analysis, anthropometry, human osteology and introductory anthropological forensics are examined in a laboratory setting. ANTH 266 ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD METHODS (4) This course introduces the student to field and laboratory methods and techniques in archaeology. Students learn the standards of archaeological field recording, excavation techniques and field-related laboratory analysis skills. Fieldwork is required.
