Personal Enrichment Survival Skills in the Wilderness This class could save your life. Feel confident hiking New Mexico’s wilderness, ranging from Sonoran desert to arctic alpine life zones. A morning class at 8,600 feet elevation precedes an afternoon hike; putting into practice the techniques learned. Real life examples are cited, where some survived and others didn’t. Favorite topics include lightning, wilderness hazards, weather signs and orienteering with and without a map or compass. Learn endurance techniques, the ten essentials, first aid shortcuts and more.

Introduction to Horseback Riding Join Broken Saddle Riding Company’s long-time wranglers to learn how to groom and care for a horse. Before the ride begins, we go over brushing, saddling and getting a horse prepared for a ride. This is a great class for those who want to be more comfortable around horses and have some hands-on experience. These horses are gentle Tennessee Walkers and students are matched with a horse according to ability. Broken Saddle Riding Company is located south of town in the beautiful Cerrillos Hills, a former mining region.

Geology of La Cienega Join local geologist, Kirt Kempter, for a full-day geologic exploration of the La Cienega area south of Santa Fe. A twomile, moderately strenuous hike to the top of Cerro Seguro (350 foot elevation gain) provides a spectacular view of the canyon carved by the Santa Fe river. The rocks in the La Cienega area tell of volcanoes both ancient and young, plus the rise of the nearby Sangre de Cristo mountains. Review the local hydrology and join a discussion on why many natural springs occur in the area. Participants should bring adequate water, hiking gear and their own lunches. Hiking poles are recommended. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 14, 1 day.
