Beginning Drawing

Painting the Landscape in Charcoal

Explore drawing in a supportive environment where creativity is encouraged. You’ll learn basic skills for drawing from life, incorporating both traditional and contemporary methods. Several approaches to drawing will be covered, which include using pencil, conte crayon and colored pencils. Demonstrations, art history and critiques enhance the work done in class. John St. Peter has a Master of Fine Arts degree. Tuesday, 6 to 9 p.m., Oct. 29, 8 wks. Course #AT303 01/CRN 20294 John St. Peter, Fee $135

Produce drawings that look like the scene you’re viewing. Learn techniques to use charcoal and plastic erasers like broad-stroke brushes that sweep across the paper similar to painting a landscape in oil or watercolor. Not only an exciting way to produce powerful black and white drawings, but this style also mimics oil and watercolor painting. Only a few inexpensive materials are needed. Michael McGuire is a professional artist and illustrator in Santa Fe. Saturday, 12 to 4 p.m., Oct. 5, 4 wks. Course #AT313 01/CRN 21003 Michael McGuire, Fee $155

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Retrace your steps to the days when it was fun to play with art supplies and just make something all your own. “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” means picking up a pencil, doing a series of simple, low-stress exercises and turning it all into hours of satisfying, deeply meditative activity. Watch yourself progress, week after week, from basic student to someone who will want a sketchbook firmly in hand. Tuesday, 6 to 9 p.m., Sept. 3, 8 wks. Course #AT307 01/CRN 21004 John St. Peter, Fee $159
