Ao festejar cem anos de existência, o movimento Soroptimista define-se por ser uma associação de mulheres profissionais (ONG) que trabalha a nível local, nacional e internacional, sem fins lucrativos, em prol de outras mulheres com vista a melhorar as suas condições de vida. O nome Soroptimist é composto pelas palavras “soror” que quer dizer irmã e “optimist” que reflete uma atitude positiva e confiante no futuro. A representação no seu emblema, da mulher de braços abertos com os raios solares, simboliza o ideal de paz internacional, as folhas de louro, o sucesso, e as folhas de carvalho a força para trabalhar. As soroptimistas são mulheres com esperança nos dias vindouros graças ao trabalho de ajuda e solidariedade entre si e para com todas as mulheres e a sua ação pode traduzir-se nas palavras: generosidade, devoção e coragem. O Soroptimismo foi fundado em 1921 nos Estados Unidos da América e cedo se expandiu pelo mundo, tendo o primeiro Clube na Europa sido criado em França em 1924. Em Portugal só nasceu em 1985. Atualmente, somos uma forte rede internacional de 70.000 soroptimistas, defensoras poderosas e eficazes dos direitos das mulheres e das jovens. Todos os Clubes Soroptimistas, espalhados pelos cinco continentes, dedicam os seus projetos de acordo com os princípios estabelecidos ou seja: Promoção do estatuto das mulheres Utilização de altos padrões éticos Direitos Humanos para todos Igualdade, desenvolvimento e democracia Promoção da compreensão internacional, boa vontade e paz

By celebrating 100 years of existence, the Soroptimist International defines itself as a non-profit association of professional women (NGO) working locally, nationally and internationally on behalf of other women to improve their lives and living conditions. The name Soroptimist is composed by the words “soror” which means sister and “optimist” which reflects a positive and confident attitude towards the future. The representation in its emblem, of the woman with open arms with the sun's rays, symbolizes the ideal of international peace, the laurel leaves, success, and the oak leaves the strength to work. Soroptimists are women with hope in the days to come, thanks to the work of helping and showing solidarity with each other and with all women, and their action can be translated in the words: generosity, devotion and courage. Soroptimism was founded in 1921 in the United States of America and soon it expanded around the world, with the first Club in Europe being created in France in 1924. It only appeared in Portugal in 1985. Today, we are a strong international network with about 70,000 Soroptimists, powerful and effective advocates for the rights of women and girls. All Soroptimist Clubs, spread across five continents, dedicate their projects according to established principles namely: Promotion of the status of women Use of high ethical standards Human rights for all Equality, development and democracy Promoting international understanding, goodwill and peace.

Procuram cumprir cinco dos dezassete Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável definidos pelas Nações Unidas na Agenda 2030, (https://unric.org/pt/Objetivos-de-Desenvolvimento-Sustentavel), por considerarem que: A Educação capacita as mulheres e as jovens a realizarem o seu potencial e a se sustentarem, ao mesmo tempo que abre as perspetivas de uma aprendizagem ao longo da vida como um meio de erradicar e prevenir a violência contra as próprias. A Sustentabilidade dos projetos soroptimistas incluem entre outras questões, iniciativas de agricultura sustentável e de gestão de resíduos. A Saúde e Segurança Alimentar pressupõem a vontade das Soroptimistas de proporcionar às mulheres e jovens a segurança dos alimentos e o acesso ao mais alto padrão (possível) de cuidados de saúde. Desde o início a Violência contra as Mulheres tem sido um dos pontos prioritários das Soroptimistas. Deste modo, temos executados projetos para responder, prevenir e eliminar a violência contra as mulheres e jovens, construindo abrigos, ajudando vítimas, fornecendo serviços de aconselhamento, fazendo lobby para melhorar os programas e políticas de prevenção e lutando pela consciencialização deste problema da nossa sociedade. www.youtube.com/user/ SoroptimistEurope O desejo das mulheres se tornarem mais fortes, poderosas e confiantes, leva a que o movimento Soroptimista desenvolva, financie e implemente projetos que permitam às mulheres serem capazes de tomar decisões para um melhor empoderamento e acesso a oportunidades económicas.

They seek to fulfil five of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations in Agenda 2030 (https://unric.org/pt/Objetivos-de-Desenvolvimento-Sustentavel), as they consider that, Education enables women and girls to fulfil their potential and to sustain themselves, while opening up the prospects for lifelong learning as a means of eradicating and preventing violence against themselves. Sustainability of Soroptimist projects include, among other issues, sustainable agriculture and waste management initiatives. Health and Food Safety imply Soroptimists' willingness to provide women and youth with food safety and access to the highest (possible) standard of health care. From the beginning, Violence against Women has been one of the priorities of Soroptimists. This way, we have carried out projects to respond to, prevent and eliminate violence against women and youth, building shelters, helping victims, providing counselling services, lobbying to improve prevention programs and policies and fight for awareness of this problem in our society. www.youtube.com/user/ SoroptimistEurope Women's desire to become stronger, more powerful and more confident drives the Soroptimist movement to develop and implement projects that enable women to be able to make decisions for better empowerment and access to economic opportunity.
