Our donors, sponsors, dedicated volunteers, interns and members of the community make it possible to do what we do. A special thank you to our Board of Directors for their dedication, and a standing ovation to our illustrious Chairman Alvin Segal on the celebration of his 80th birthday – biz hundert und tsvantsik! Artistic Producer’s Notes

ON THE CANADA COUNCIL Our national funding body, the Canada Council for the Arts, informed us this summer that Segal funding for the next four years is cut by eight per cent. We are already drastically underfunded compared to our sister companies. The Canada Council funds less than one per cent of our annual operations. The Council wrote in their letter of 19 July that “All applications to the program are evaluated in a competitive, comparative context…” I ask: how can this be called a competition when 90% of the results are known before anyone has put pen to paper? By what criteria can we be judged in the national – or any other – context to account for why the Segal Centre’s operations are perennially funded at a fraction of what other comparable companies receive? I cannot for the life of me figure out the fairness of the competition. It cannot be on the amount of patrons we serve each year or on the amount of artists we engage each season. Judging by the critical press, it cannot be the quality of our work. Furthermore, we have made a point of supporting community, emerging and indie companies with our resources, expertise and access to our facilities. If you are asking yourself what may I do to ensure that high quality productions remain viable at the Segal Centre? Become a subscriber. Not because of the savings, the premium seating, or the parking privileges, but to show your support. Make a donation and become a Segal Governor. As a not-for-profit theatre with little government funding, our audiences and our donors sustain us. I leave you with a final thought from the Canada Council from their letter of 19 July: “In summary, the peer assessment committee expressed strong support for the company and its leadership” and a few lines from the poet Thomas Gray:

Canada Council Comparative Funding 2008-2012 $1,676,000

Producer’s NOTE & BIOS

PRODUCER'S NOTE It is with great pleasure that we bring you the three-time Tony Award-winning musical Ain’t Misbehavin’. During my 25-year career, I have produced over 50 productions throughout the world, and over 90% of them have been musicals. I guess you could say I am a music man. My goal has always been to bring happiness and a pleasurable evening to the theatre going public. In my opinion, the musical best accomplishes this goal. I can tell you now that I am busy working on bringing a major musical next season to the Segal Centre. We at Copa plan to continue to bring you award-winning musicals both classic and new and hope to continue our voyage with your support. - Allan Sandler Copa de Oro Productions

BIOGRAPHIES Allan Sandler Producer Allan is a well-known Quebec producer of highly successful theatrical productions in both the English and French languages. Among some of Allan's most successful productions are: Chicago The Musical in Montreal and Paris where it was nominated for Best Musical; Grease, four productions in Montreal, two in Toronto, nominated for seven «Les Masques» awards (including Best Musical) and awarded the coveted prix Billet d’Or. Allan most recently worked with The Mirvish Company in Toronto on War Horse. Allan is thrilled to announce that he has entered into an association with the Segal Centre to acquire the worldwide rights to the smash-hit Sherlock Holmes. He is also working on his greatest challenge: producing the English adaptation of Michel Tremblay’s French blockbuster Les Belles Sœurs The Musical. THOMAS "FATS" WALLER Music Thomas “Fats” Waller (1904-1943) was an African American jazz pianist, organist, composer and comedic entertainer. Born in New York City, he studied classical piano before apprenticing with the legendary jazz pianist James P. Johnson, who introduced Waller to the world of New York rent parties and the Harlem Stride style. Waller became known as one of the very best who ever played in the stride style, a jazz piano technique that came to characterize music during the rise of the Harlem Renaissance, an era of burgeoning creativity, cultural awareness and ethnic pride. Waller soon gained recognition for his songwriting and lovable, roguish stage personality, recording a number of hit songs with his own five or six-piece combo Fats Waller and His Rhythm, including “Squeeze Me” (1919), “Ain’t Misbehavin’” (1929), “Blue Turning Grey Over You” (1930), “Honeysuckle Rose” (1929), “I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling” (1929) and “Jitterbug Waltz” (1942). He often collaborated with Tin Pan Alley lyricist Andy Razaf, played with many performers, from Erskine Tate to Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong, and appeared in a number of feature films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943. Weighing close to 300 pounds, Waller’s weight and drinking were widely believed to have contributed to his death; he died at the age of 39 aboard an eastbound train near Kansas City, Missouri.

He has enjoyed a long association with the Manhattan Theatre Club, where he directed five musicals including the original production of Ain’t Misbehavin’. The son of the well-known orchestra leader, Mr. Maltby also contributes devilish crossword puzzles to Harpers Magazine. Other shows at the Segal over the years include Beau Jest, Jeanne La Pucelle and The Sisters Rosensweig, all produced in conjunction with longtime partner Allan Sandler. Ain’t Misbehavin’ will mark his 107th production either as a writer, producer, director and/or choreographer. As a writer, his award-winning production of Piaf: Love Conquers All (Best Musical New York and Toronto) was a hit Off-Broadway and is now scheduled to open in England this October after touring the US and Canada, Europe and the Philippines. Other credits include: West Side Story, Mame, Funny Girl, Shear Madness, The Kaye Ballard Show, and I Do, I Do. For television, he wrote White Gardenia: The New Billie Holiday Musical, and Here’s to the Ladies. In film, he choreographed Donald Sutherland in Bethune and has worked with Jodie Foster, Rob Lowe, Joan Collins, Robert Wagner as well as such Montreal artists as Ranee Lee, Patsy Gallant and Michelle Sweeney. Roger is equally well-known for writing on the theme of show-biz legends, and has created shows on Marlene Dietrich, Shirley Bassey and Janis Joplin. His show about the life of Judy Garland is set to open in April 2014, but for now his priority is that you sit back, have fun and enjoy Ain’t Misbehavin’.
